Beach Runs

Posted: June 13, 2011 at 9:16 am

Want to join in on the beach fun?? Here are some posts you might have missed:

Before hitting the beach yesterday morning, I helped Peter get started on a new challenge he has decided to pick up. The Couch to 5K!!

P1140475

I was so thrilled when he told me he wanted to try to get a bit more into running as well. Even better? He wanted to get started on our vacation so I could go out with him. We woke up early yesterday morning to get in the week one, day one workout.

P1140482

The workout called for 5 minutes walking to warm-up and then alternating 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking. Our walking intervals ended up being more photo shoot intervals instead though…

Besides our self-portraits we snagged some shots of our new house…

P1140480
(if only)

and one of the many scary looking jelly fish washed up on shore…

P1140485
(remind me not to go in the water)

….and goofy “I’m running pictures”.

P1140477
so special

We still managed to cover 2 miles in our workout, which felt great. It also got me amped up for a longer, steadier run on the beach this morning.

P1140472

I laced up and headed out to the flat, packed sand. Oh, how I would love to run along the shore every day!! I covered 4 miles at a calm, easy for me 10 minute/mile pace. It felt amazing! The peaceful, quiet of the early morning coupled with the serenity of seeing such beauty as the vast ocean and colorful sky God created – what a way to start a day!

To top off a revitalizing workout, I filled my belly with my all-time favorite breakfast. Oats with strawberries, raisins, and peanut butter of course!

IMGP9954

Mmmmmm. Now I feel ready to tackle anything. Though today I only plan to tackle my beach chair and sand when playing with Makenzie. I hope Monday treats you well!

  • What is your all time favorite breakfast?
  • Do you know anyone ever stung by a jellyfish? My sister has been…and someone did in fact have to pee on her. She’s gonna kill me for telling that!

    Way to go Peter!! 🙂

Yikes on the jellyfish..just gave me the shivers lol

  2. Amy Lauren says:

Those oats look yummy! It’s so awesome that you and Peter are running together and that he’s doing C25K now :).

  3. jobo says:

That’s awesome that Peter is going to run with you!! I LOVE running with M, it makes a huge difference for me. I LOVE toast with peanut butter or almond butter. Something comforting about it. I am digging Fiber One honey wheat toast lately (50 cals a slice yet nice and hearty!) 🙂

  4. What a beautiful morning to run! Btw how do you cook your oats? They look like the perfect consistency,

    • Tina says:

I microwave them at 50% power – which makes all the difference. I use 1/3 – 1/2 c oats, add enough water to where they are just covered, then microwave at 50% power for 3:30 – 4:00 minutes. I add almond milk to them after cooking to get them to my perfect consistency and then the toppings. Works every time. 🙂

  5. The two of you are so cute!! My favorite breakfast is scrambled eggs with toast and bacon. It’s not something I have very often though!

  6. Running on the beach?? That’s hardcore. Running in sand is pretty impossible… but I guess if you’re running on the packed sand then it’s not so bad eh?

    • Tina says:

It was tougher than pavement but yes – the packed sand by the water was much nicer on the legs. I wouldn’t even dare try to run in the soft stuff. Ouch! LOL

  7. What a gorgeous running venue! I’m doing the Couch to 5K program too – my plan is to run a 5K in September. I’d love to be training on the beach with you though 🙂

  8. Angela says:

Oh my goodness, your photos are GREAT Tina! I’m just catching up on your weekend posts and I feel like you’ve just taken me on holiday. (Although the real thing would be better, of course!) I love running on the beach as well – such a great workout! Have a fabulous day! 🙂

  9. Looks like a great time with your hubby!

  10. I love how much fun you and Peter seem to have together! That is just how Alex and I act. That is so fun that he is doing the couch to 5k! And that you inspired him. Careful, I bet he will be blowing you away in just a few short weeks. When Alex finally started running regularly after I finished my marathon, it was only a matter of time before he became this star runner, and now I’m huffing and puffing to keep up with him!

    • Tina says:

I can imagine. I know he will be soon enough. He used to run on the treadmill regularly and so I know he will be smoking me soon.

  11. Samantha says:

It looks like a perfect morning where you are!! I love when I actually drag myself out of bed to run in the morning. Such a great way to start the day.

I don’t know anyone who’s been stung by a jellyfish, that’s crazy about your sister! I always remember the FRIENDS episode when Chandler pees on Monica to make the pain stop. Yuck.

  12. So jealous of your beach run! Enjoy your vacation!

  13. I’ve been stung before! Definitely super painful but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I would totally run on the beach…so fun! I’m glad y’all are going to start running together!

    • Tina says:

Eep! It’s so rare to hear of others who have been stung. My sister said hers hurt really bad, but she was a teenager when it happened so the drama factor probably amped it up a bit. LOL Either way it doesn’t sound fun at all. And hopefully no one had to pee on you. 😉

  14. jassy says:

a girl from work was stung by jelly fish and it’s true…someone had to pee on her legs just to stop the swelling

nice beach house. it’s nice to run with someone….most of the time 🙂

  15. I’m glad Peter is trying out C25K!

Favorite breakfast — oatmeal, protein powder, 1/2 banana, chia seeds all mashed together in a bowl.

  16. Yeah, I am not okay with that jelly fish picture. O_O

My all-time fave breakfast … scrambled eggs, biscuit and a couple strips of bacon, all smother in sausage gravy! If only I could eat that every day … instead, I save it for once or twice a year. 😉

  17. Whitney says:

Hey Tina! I LOVE homemade french toast! And yes I know someone stung by a jelly fish……ME!!!! It was in the bahamas when I was 16 so about 10 yrs ago now and I still rememeber it!!! Eeek! I was so painful!

Oh and I’m trying to do C25K too!
Also, are you selling you FFF shirts? If so I would love to buy one or two! Have fun! 🙂

    • Tina says:

So crazy that you were stung too! It doesn’t seem like it would be something that common but it apparently is. I’ve heard of a few people. I can imagine it hurt.

I have had a few people ask about the shirts. I can set up a shop through spreadshirt for them so they can be available to those interested. I will look into it after I get back from my trip. If people want to get one I’m more than happy to share the design. Just didn’t want to open a shop and have nobody interested and it be like “buy from me! buy from me!”. LOL

  18. Mac says:

There is nothing better than running on a beach! I wish I lived near the ocean so I could do it everyday!

  19. Lauren says:

That’s great that you have a new running buddy! Beach running is hard with the sand, but it is so beautiful.
That jellyfish comment just made me think of the FRIENDS episode where Monica gets stung by a jellyfish. One of my favorite episodes!

  20. Great pics! Definitely gonna have to visit you in that new house 😀 LOL!

  21. i love your headbands! especially the one you wore in your 10k. early morning runs on the beach sounds heavenly 🙂

    • Tina says:

Bondi Bands are the best! It kept all sweat out of my face on that race and this morning. And boy was there sweat to keep away with the humidity.

  22. Working out on the beach is the best!! So awesome that Peter wants to start running more. Something fun for you two to do together 🙂

I’ve been stung by a jellyfish before. I was really young and I just remember being in serious pain and miserable….

  23. I’m doing couch to 5K too! It’s such a great, approachable way to get into running…I’m on Week 2 right now! I’m going to the beach in 2 weeks and I can’t wait to continue my training in the sand. It looks like you guys had fun!

  24. I got stung by a jellyfish once and thankfully no one peed on me, but I did get vinegar poured all over my leg for ages – I STANK!! And it leaves a really weird scar for a while, like fish scales. Luckily that faded after a while, but it’s a fun story!

  25. There’s nothing better than a morning run on the beach with the sun just coming up. My mom actually just started the C25K program. 58 and trying to run, love it!

    • Tina says:

That’s so awesome! I love when people recognize its never too late to get into something. So inspiring. Kudos to her!

  26. I love that he’s going to do C25K! so fun that you can work out together – great beach house btw and yes, I want one too! Sign me up for a mansion! lOL

  27. I almost got stung by a jelly fish once! Thankfully, I made it out sting-free 🙂 My fave breakfast are muffins. I love muffins of any kind but when I’m not makin’ em, specifically, I enjoy Dunkin Donut’s blueberry muffins. Yummyyy!

  28. Dorry says:

An early morning run on the beach sounds fantastic! I love oatmeal, too. I usually crave something sweet in the morning, so oats or fruit and granola is usually my favorite.

  29. Anna says:

OMG!! That jelly is so scary. They, along with birds, remind me of dinosaurs haha.

Also, that pic of Peter yesterday was hilarious and made me laugh out loud :D. Have a great day! <3

  30. Lauren says:

That is so great that Peter is taking on this challenge. He is so lucky to have a great coach and #1 supporter!

  31. Beach runs are the best! They kill the ankles and calves (in a good way) but are still my fave!

  32. What could be better than a beach run with your favorite man? Glad you’re having a great time.

  33. Priyanka says:

It is always fun to have your spouse run with you. My husband slows down just so he can run with me, makes me happy 🙂

  34. That’s so awesome that Peter wants to join you:) Shane and I did couch 2 5k a couple years ago. Then he went back to the couch 😉 OK, and the weight room 😛

  35. Bari says:

Beautiful place to run – I loved the pictures.

While I have not been stung by a jelly, I did get stung by something called a hydroid when I was scuba diving. Weirdest pain ever. So bad that I had to cut my dive short and surface because it was making me panic. No one peed on me though.

  36. Sarah R says:

I was stung once and still have a faint scar to prove it! I wish someone had offered to pee on it for me because it hurt like crazy!

  37. vivoir says:

Fave brekkie is what I have eeeevery single morning (post pre-training dried apricots or cereal, and post-post-workout banana!): 2 cold hard-boiled eggs, 0.75 cup dry muesli, 1 crunchy apple, 2 fruit of another variety (currently oranges!)

Don’t ask me why cold eggs… I have no idea why I prefer them like this!!!

  38. I’m just going to say breakfast is my favorite meal, but I could never pick a favorite breakfast!

That sky looks amazing….I soooooo wish I was at the beach. 45 days and counting….

  39. LauraJayne says:

Try some barefoot beach running so I can vicariously live through you! The house and beach look beautiful and I”m glad you’re enjoying your vacation so far!

Keep us updated on the Couch to 5k your husband is doing – my aunt is thinking about it, and I’d love some feedback for her!

  40. Joanna B says:

You’re having my kind of vacation, one that starts with a workout! How awesome that you can do it together.

I have been stung by a jellyfish! I was in Ibiza (an island off the coast of Barcelona in the Balearic Sea). I hadn’t slept the night before because we stayed up all night dancing. I went for a swim and felt a sting and slime on my hand about 100 meters from shore. The tentacle of the jellyfish got stuck on my hand. It was small and luckily I was able to get it off. I did pee on my hand and it didn’t help. I went to the pharmacy and they gave me some cream. I had a burn mark from the sting the rest of my vacation.

  41. Looks like a heavenly vacation! So fun that you got to run on the beach! My all time favorite breakfast at the moment is rice cakes with yogurt, ground flax, and frozen blueberries!

  42. Running is contagious, I tell ya! How fun that your husband is joining in the fun! 🙂

I do not know anyone stung by a jellyfish. It’s gross, but if it’s pee or terrible pain, I’d take the pee.

I love pancakes with sliced strawberries, or oatmeal with PB and honey. I tend to like breakfast foods in general.

  43. I would love to run along that beautiful coast! I live fairly close to the beach, but parking is such a nightmare and it’s always SO crowded- it’s impossible to get in a good run!

My mom was stung by a jellyfish when she was a kid and lived in the Phillippines. So scary!

  44. Sandra says:

Running on the beach! Brutal! You guys rock!
Love the “I’m running” pic, still giggling. As for your new “house” you won’t mind a little company will you? You won’t even know I”m there…seriously, you won’t!

  45. Brittany says:

Yay! So much fun 🙂 Don’t forget your sunscreen!

  46. Karen says:

Love your new house : ) Does it come with a house cleaner too??

  47. Holy Jellyfish.. yikes!

  48. You guys are like Herrick and I…gotta get a picture of the one house you’d die to live in. Haha.

I’ve been stung by a jelly fish…actually plenty of times. It’s not too fun! I was born and lived in the Florida Keys for a while, so things like jelly fish, hammerhead sharks, octopi…eh, no biggie. (Ha, who am I kidding…still terrified of the first two!)

So glad you’re getting Peter involved in running…having him as a running partner will be nice!

And PS: Your leisurely 10min/mile run? That’s my normal pace. You bum. 😛

  49. Sarah says:

Your beach runs looks so wonderful (minus the jellyfish!). I know I plan on doing C25K after this baby comes- the idea of running on the beach makes me even more excited about that plan!

  50. GMR says:

Looks like you are having a great vacation! I’m on week 2 of C25K and really enjoying it!
