Bits And Pieces

Posted: June 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Okay, my title just made me crave candy and I have no idea why. Maybe it makes me think of Reese’s Pieces? I still have a hard time figuring out the way my mind works. Either way, here are some Reese’s pieces of my day today. ‘Twas a good one.

5 Mile Tempo Run With The Cows

007

Mooooo!!! Now that I got that out of my system…I hit up a local running trail to hang out with the cows and knock out this week’s tempo run. The run called for a one mile warm-up, three miles at an 8:33 tempo, and then a one mile cool down. My tempo splits ended up being 8:37, 8:38, and 8:28 min/mile. I came somewhat close but definitely learned that I have a problem figuring out my pace and keeping it steady. I felt all over the place! Those tempo runs are tough trying to get in tune with the body.

Best Way To Store Headphones

IMGP9907

I had to buy new headphones after mine crapped out on me this past weekend. You know I went the “el cheapo” route and nabbed a pair for under $10. That, of course, means they don’t have a handy way to store them or other fancy features. Which, therefore, means I resort to my office clip method of storing headphones to keep the tangles away. Nothing works better. Don’t you love Peter’s my innovativeness?

Breaking In Our Pool

IMGP9958IMGP9980

We have a pool in our backyard, but the dang trees keep it shaded most of the day so it takes for-ev-ah to get warm enough to take a dip without risking hypothermia. Today was the day to finally brave the chill factor and only risk the “cutting glass” effect, if you know what I mean. I edged my way in to about chest level and was done. Peter, of course, jumps right in telling me it’s the only way to do it. Mehhh….I like my method.

Harry Potter Obsession

harrypotter

Dork alert: Peter & I share a bit of enthusiasm over Harry Potter. Not crazy crazy, but we like it well enough. Well enough to decide to watch the first seven movies through again before hopefully fitting a visit to the theater into the budget for next month’s release of the last film. We start #2 tonight!

I Got My Jeans Buttoned

My “goal jeans”! Out of curiosity I took a stab at them and got them on and buttoned. They still fit way too tight to actually wear comfortably, but I take getting them oa as a huge victory. Consistency with healthy habits and not doing anything crazy besides watching tons of Harry Potter and running with cows pays off!

I Love ALL of YOU! That doesn’t need further explanation. I just wanted to tell you that. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Harry Potter – Are you a fan?
  • Getting into a cold pool – Slow and steady or Dive right in?

  1. Congrats on the goal jeans, Tina! And I love the picture of you and the little one in the pool!

  2. I am a huge Harry Potter fan. Super excited about going to see the last one.
Have you listened to them on audiobook? Jim Dale is awesomesauce…literally.

  3. My husband makes fun of me too for inching my way into cold water. I had to wade across a mountain creek during our last hiking trip to get to the other side of the trail we were hiking and I thought my feet were going to freeze off.

  4. Jess says:

YAY on the goal jeans!!!! You are rocking it out, I am so happy for you!

  5. Ohhh yes, Harry Potter fan right here 😉 can’t wait for the new one!
I’m SUCH a wimp getting into a cold pool…I inch my way in, then eventually just dive under to get it over with, hate being cold!
YAY for fitting into your jeans again! well done 🙂 they’ll be huggin you perfectly in no time 🙂

  6. RunEatRepeat says:

    Yah for the jeans!!!

  7. I, too, find it really hard to keep an even pace during tempo runs! My splits are usually all over the place. Sometimes a whole minute off! Yeah, I need to work on that. 😛

  8. I get in the water slow and steady! I dislike getting my face wet/diving into water so jumping in is a no go for me!
Congrats on getting into those jeans! Your little girl is ADORABLE. I love that smile of hers.

  9. jobo says:

Wow, congrats on the jeans!!!!!!! that is AWESOME!!! And I am jealous of your pool. I MISS my pool so much from when I owned a house. Enjoy it, even the er, cutting glass effect 😉 hehe.

  10. I LOVE HARRY POTTER :). I cannot wait for the final movie to come out! As for getting into a cold pool- if it’s really hot out, I’ll dive right in. If not, then I probably won’t get in at all haha.

  11. i love harry potter! i’ve read all of the books several times and i can’t wait to see the last movie.

and i usually take a couple slow steps into a pool and then climb out and jump right in. it’s so much less painless in my opinion!

  12. Jill says:

Slow and steady with a BIG shiver when I dip my shoulders in!!!

Congrats on getting into the jeans! I know how good that feels!

    • Tina says:

What is it about the shoulders? I get to a point where I have to dunk to my shoulders too and it is SO hard. LOL

  13. Erica says:

What a cool spot for a run! I need to start storing my headphones that way…they’re always in knots. That picture of you and your daughter is ADORABLE! Hooray for the jeans success- that is just awesome

  14. Kacy says:

Definitely dive right in. Like a bandaid!
    Congrats on the pants 🙂

  15. Sarah says:

I love the cow picture. I used to run with cows when I was in college but now all I have is city. It is pretty cool running past the National Cathedral though.

That pic of you and Mackenzie is adorable 🙂 Congrats on the goal jeans! I love you too!! <3

  16. I am such a wimp when it comes to getting into water, whether it be a pool, lake or the ocean. It has to be so hot outside that I can’t stand it anymore & plunge for the water. If the water is cold (at all) I won’t get in it. My bath water has to be so hot that you can see the steam coming off of it! I’m more of a hot tub girl. 😉

I read the first 3 books of Harry Potter & subsequently watched each movie after. They started to get a little too scary for my liking, so I stopped. Again, I’m a wimp. 🙂

  17. Anna Crouch says:

Nice work! It’s a huge accomplishment that you are reaching your goals without depriving yourself, and in fact, even indulging sometimes! That’s true health right there 🙂

  18. Ahh I LOVE Harry Potter! I just re-read Book 7 to get ready for the last movie! Congrats on the jeans! That’s the best feeling.

  19. marcia says:

Harry Potter? Nope. But I somehow loved the Lord of The Rings Trilogy! 🙂

Pool? No way! Ha…slow and steady if I MUST! Eeeek! 😉

  20. Becca says:

    Running with cows… nice. 🙂

I didn’t know you had a pool! Glad you were able to use it today! And that picture of you guys in it is too cute. 😀

    YAY for goal-jeans! 🙂

I like Harry Potter, but I’ve only read like two of the books. I’ve seen every movie, but I watched the first Deathly Hallows one (in theaters with a friend) before I watched the previous one. Hahahaha.

I tend to do slow-and-steady pool/lake entries. I should just go full-speed, but I just can’t most of the time. I’m super slow.

  21. Megan says:

I LOVE Harry Potter! I just re-read the 7th book so that I had all those details fresh in my mind before watching the final movie. I’m thinking my husband and I should do a Harry Potter marathon beforehand too! 🙂

  22. Yay for your goal jeans, and your beautiful daughter in the pool – love that big smile! I’m so pumped for the final Harry movie!

  23. Ohhhh, how I love cows. They just crack me up 🙂

Yay for fitting in the goal jeans!!! That’s such a great feeling, isn’t it?!?

  24. Yey for all of your bits and pieces especially a great trail run! I am loving running along the C&O canal here in D.C. it’s a great sub to the lake shore path in Chicago! 🙂

  25. Woohoo! Congrats on the jeans! I had to laugh at your cow photo since I live in the city and my runs look a tad bit different, I can’t imagine running by a cow! haha

  26. Kristi says:

I love your ear phone storage idea!

  27. Your daughter looks TOO cute in the swimming pool!!! Congrats on your jeans! That is a huge accomplishment!
Quick question: How have you been able to increase your speed?! I’ve noticed that you are getting faster (based on the times you tell us), and I feel like I’ve been at a plateau around 9-10 minute miles for a long time now. Maybe I’m just not pushing myself hard enough?

    • Tina says:

I think the speed work and tempo runs really help. Plus, some of my faster speeds may be from flatter runs. I have a hillier run coming up on Saturday so we shall see then. 😉

  28. hoorah for fitting in your goal jeans! that’s great.

  29. Katheryn says:

Hubby and I also decided to watch all the HP movies again before the last one comes out. Last night we finished #2

    Congrats on your goal jeans!

  30. Cindy says:

    Congrats on your goal jeans!!

  31. I’m more of a lord of the rings fan myself but I do love me some harry potter too! I want a pool in my backyard!

  32. The clip is genius! Why haven’t I thought of that before? I seriously spend 3 minutes untangling headphones everytime I take them out. It’s like they magically tangle themselves when sitting unused.

  33. Sarah says:

    Countdown to Potter!!
I’m the opposite in that I jump right in and lovingly berate my husband for being prissy about the cold water:)

  34. Slow and steady, though it is a form of torture. I haven’t read/watched any Harry Potter yet. Maybe with my kids someday. I’m a little jealous of the cows. It suggests a scenic, rural trail.

  35. To say that I am Harry Potter fan would be a sincere understatement… I am obsessed!
I get cold so darn easily, so jumping in and getting it over with is the way to go for me. Slow and steady is much too painful

  36. That’s awesome about the goal jeans!! Your hard and consistent work is very inspiring 🙂

  37. Mac says:

I’m a slow and steady person, I hate it when people try to be funny and splash me when I first get in. Just let me ease in 🙂 Yay for the jeans buttoning!

  38. Sarah says:

Genius way to store headphones!! I love it! I’m a jump in kind of person, but once I jump in I don’t last long if it’s too cold I jump right back out.

  39. I ADORE Harry potter!!!!! My sis and i have read every book and seen every movie together (except 1 because she was studying abroad)…and this year she is going to visit her friend for a week the day before the last movie comes out. I literally said “How could you do this to me?!?!?!” When she realized she tried to change her flight but it was too late. We are freaks!

  40. Lauren says:

YAY!!!! Congrats on the jeans girl. I bet that felt amazing and don’t worry, tight jeans are wear its at! 😉

  41. Kelley says:

Harry Potter – Are you a fan?

YES! I love the books and films. While I liked the first three books, I became hopelessly engrossed in book 4: The Goblet of Fire. The only disappointment I have ever had was in the execution of the 4th film. I would be more than happy to explain it to you, but it is a LONG explanation.

Getting into a cold pool – Slow and steady or Dive right in?

I say slow and steady. I had little experience getting into pools when I was a kid, since I didn’t know how to swim. I was terrified of water! In high school though, I was required to pass a basic swimming class in order to graduate. So at 17, after a few painstaking lessons from a lifeguard friend of mine, I finally learned how to float. I’m 26 now, and still not an expert swimmer, but I always approach the water slowly. After all, it’s not a race!

  42. Congrats on getting into your goal jeans!! Isn’t that the best feeling? 🙂

  43. Heather says:

slow and steady. hubby dives right in, maybe a boy thing? I ddint know you had a pool, how fun!

  44. We have a pool at my house, too, and we also have the tall tree dilemma. There are two tall trees: one to the east of the pool and one to the west of our pool, so it literally never gets direct sunlight. I can remember one time when the pool topped 80 degrees. Other than that it’s usually around 72-74. Toasty! Haha. I most definitely need to wade in. The only time you’ll ever catch me jumping right in is if I’m a sweaty beast. Then all bets are off.

  45. Lee says:

Yay for the goal jeans! You look great.

I’m not a Harry Potter fan. And I creep slowly into the pool. I can’t even tell you how many times Jason said, “Just go under” while we were in Mexico. And the pool/ocean wasn’t even that cold.

  46. I have to agree with the inching in method…I suppose I am just not brave enough to jump in. As for Harry Potter I read all the books and loved them…I was actually quite sad when #7 came out, because I knew that was the end.
Thanks for stopping by my blog, if you make the donuts for your daughter let me know.

  47. First a run with cows, then taking half a dip in your pool? Such a dangerous life you live – don’t make us call the cops on you, Tina! 😉

Our pool was always like that growing up – took half the summer to warm up! Luckily, our neighbor’s pool always got a lot of sun, so we mooched!

  48. Ooo I’m jealous of your pool! I wish I had one in my backyard! I get in slowly – I can never just jump in.

    I love you too. 🙂

  49. Karen says:

Yay for the goal jeans!! What a huge accomplishment! M looks so happy to be in that pool : )

  50. I’m a HUGE Harry Potter fan! I’m doing the same thing you are – watching the movies to get ready for the last one. (Don’t judge us people!)
