Sweating Another Birthday

Posted: August 23, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Greetings my granola loving friends. You sure all want to nab yourself that Love Grown Foods prize pack in my giveaway this morning! And thank you for the birthday wishes!! You all sure know how to make a gal feel the love. Smile

You know what I find funny? When you’re a little girl, birthday time means getting to be a princess for the day…

And then you grow up and want to annihilate your body with challenging workouts to celebrate your birthday. What? Just me? Oh well.

I briefly mentioned hitting up spin class last night. I think I was still in shock when I wrote that because I didn’t tell you just how awesome the class was. Let me tell you. It. Was. Awesome! Thanks to a busy schedule, it has been almost a month since I have made it to spin. How did that happen?! I had withdrawals and didn’t want to enter my birthday without in my life another day.

I look like I did a swimming workout and not a cycling workout! Something about spin classes really challenges me. I have taken them for over 7 years (wow!) but still want to lay down and die after almost every class. After a month off? It wasn’t too pretty, but it sure felt good. Even with my legs burning and my heart about to beat out of my chest. The class coupled a lot of speed work with increasing resistance on the bike. I didn’t know whether to slap or kiss my instructor with every turn.

To add more pain fun to the experience, I did a little weight lifting action at the gym this morning. I broke my usual circuit down into a bunch of supersets. Here are the deets…

MOVE A   MOVE B
squat 3 x 12 upright dumbbell row 3 x 15
assisted pull-ups 3 x 10 narrow lat pulldown 3 x 8
leg raises on stability ball 3 x 20/side rear delt raises 3 x 10
staggered push-ups 3 x 8/side dumbbell bench on stability ball 3 x 12
plie plyo jacks 3 x 15 spiderman planks 3 x 10/side
tricep cable pushdown 2 x 10 cable bicep curl 2 x 10

It looks like a lot but it went by quickly with going between each superset back to back. I would do a squat then dumbbell row, squat then dumbbell row, squat then dumbbell row to get three sets of each and then move immediately into the pull-ups with lat pulldown and so on. I may look a little crazy jumping from move to move, but it works for me. In. Out. On with that little thing called life.

I have a feeling I will feel sore by the end of the day. Not a bad thing. It is my birthday after all…so I can hopefully score a free massage from the husband. Winking smile

  • What workout never gets easier no matter how long you do it?
  • What is one way you love to celebrate your birthday?

I love my husband’s massages! Tell your hubby you definitely deserve one, especially after your rather epic birthday workout!! 🙂

  2. Pushups never get any easier for me! Urgh.

I love doing something on my birthday that feels like pampering because I so rarely do it…like a pedicure. 🙂

  3. Best way to celebrate is with Champagne – of course! Have a wonderful evening girl – you deserve it! xoxo from Trinidad

  4. Having family and close friends over to celebrate with!

  5. Maria says:

Wall balls (throwing a heavy ball against the same point on a wall and then doing a squat) is such a challenging workout for me and I swear, I never get better at it…but at the same time I know it’s really beneficial since it challenges my body so much.

Oh and box jumps. How I loathe box jumps.

My birthday is in October, so I enjoy doing any fall like activity: pumpkin patch visiting, corn maze and of course a pumpkin spice latte.

  6. Happy Birthday Tina!! Hope your day continues to be as great as your workout last night!

I always like to spend some time on my birthday reflecting on the past year and realizing usually that it’s been faster and better than I imagined, than think hopefully of all the good things that the next year will hold.

I also love to relax and watch a good chick flick. These are not my hubby’s favorite, so I take advantage of a free shot to watch one!! 🙂

  7. Happy Birthday!!! I love birthday workouts! I always like to start my birthday with a long run with my dog and other running buddies. Then, BIG birthday breakfast!

  8. Runblondie26 says:

Happy Birthday Tina! Enjoy your evening. Make sure the hubby treats you right 😉

  9. Mellissa says:

Heated yoga sculpt. It still kicks my butt every single time. Love it!

  10. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

I just love how you say that spin class makes you want to lay down and die, and how much you love it. 😉 There’s nothing so good as a well-earned sweat!

I’d say my last birthday was a great one – I went for a little run with my daughter, and we went out to dinner and to play at Dave & Buster’s as a family. My son is hoping I’ll choose D&B’s for my next birthday.

  11. Happy birthday Tina 🙂

  12. Khushboo says:

Gah spinning kills me every time- in a good way! I love to run because it constantly challenges me- there is always room for improvement whether that’s in terms of speed or distance! Glad you having a great birthday- hope yummy cake is up next!

  13. Ela says:

Happy Birthday! Lovely time of year for a birthday–and what a way to celebrate it.

I’ve never taken a spinning class, but I tend to notice that if I don’t do a kind of exercise for any amount of time, it’s _way_ harder when I go back to it…
    Enjoy that massage!

  14. Jess @ Jess Go Bananas says:

Push ups never seem to get any easier!!!
For my birthday I always always always celebrate with ice scream!
I scream for ice cream!!! lol 🙂
    Happy Birthday!

  15. Aw happy birthday!!! Have a fantastic evening!

And it’s awesome you do spinning. I’ve always been slightly too scared to try it. 🙂

    • Tina says:

You should give it a shot! It’s really easy to adapt to your own fitness level. Although it does hurt the booty the first few times.

  16. Sounds like a good day so far to me!
I’ve never tried spinning because I’m not a big fan of bicycling. But everyone raves about it, so maybe one day.

I love to celebrate my birthday by being with my family. It doesn’t matter what we do or where we go as long as I have them around. Oh and maybe a little froyo. Yeah, that.

  17. Kelly says:

That picture of M is precious!!!

  18. I LOVE spinning!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! 😀

  19. Happy Birthday!

I can’t wait to go to a spinning class now. I swear, I have two more weeks before I can workout again (post surgery) and reading all these workout posts is torture. Lol!

  20. Love spinning!!
I always try to celebrate my birthday with a run…and then some CAKE..and then some more cake 😉

  21. Stephanie says:

I only tried one spin class and I didn’t like it. It hurt my bum too much! Wow, am I ever a baby…

  22. Susan says:

Happy birthdaaaaay!!! I like saving the fun workouts for my birthday too. Step class is the funnest for me. Although, running will always challenge me, cause if it gets too easy I can just run faster 😉

  23. Lindsey says:

    Happiest of Happy Birthdays!!!

All I’ve wanted to do for my birthday for the past two years is wake up early and run. Or wake up early and drive to the beach to run on the boardwalk. I was really conflicted last year when a friend surprised me at 10pm the night before with a 6-pack to ‘start the year in style!’ I was like, “but I wanted to run in the morning.

🙂 I hope you celebrate in whatever way you want to!

  24. janetha says:

Daaaang I love those moves! No wonder you’re so ripped 😉 Thanks for the ideas and happy birthday again!

    • Tina says:

Thanks for all the birthday love Janetha!!! And I’m cracking up about being ripped. I do like to train hard though. 🙂

  25. The exercise that I can’t stand that never seems to get easy are pass-through lunges with a weight. YUCK

  26. First of all, Happy Birthday Tina!!
Second, great workout you posted! I have been trying to get more into super sets and think I will try it out with what you posted! How long did it end up taking you?

  27. Happy birthday! So glad you got to make it to spin 🙂 Birthdays are definitely for fitting in the things that you love.

  28. Happy, happy birthday, Tina!! <3

  29. Coco says:

Happy Birthday! I hope you weren’t too sore today to celebrate. 😉

  30. Happy Bday Beautiful!! 🙂

  31. Sandra says:

Sounds awesome! I’m on vacation and missing working out so much! I know I know, I’m on vacay, but still, seeing you on that bike made me want to go for a run…or something! Great workout Tina! And happy birthday!

    • Tina says:

I know what you mean, Sandra. I was craving a good solid workout while at the conference this weekend. We’re just crazy people like that. 😉

  32. Brittany says:

Spin is my absolute FAVORITE!! My favorite teacher always switches it up so a lot of times its still super hard. I go to the gym on my birthday too, no worries 😀 happy birthday!

  33. I’m a little behind in my blog reading this week, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY (a couple of days late)!!! Sounds like it was a great one!!

  34. I’m obviously WICKED behind. HAPPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! 😉

  35. Erin says:

Sports Conditioning at the gym is ALWAYS hard. For everyone, every time. Seriously!
