I Stuff My Bra

Posted: August 31, 2011 at 1:02 pm

I precede this post with a warning – SCARY PICTURES AHEAD! SCARY PICTURES AHEAD! SCARY PICTURES AHEAD!

I felt exceptionally nervous for today’s six mile speed run. And probably for a different reason than you think.

 IMGP1062-1

the pain. Oh, the pain! What would happen with a fast run? Could I handle it????

Okay. I may have gotten a little dramatic there. But I still had concerns about this morning’s workout – speed work, sore chest, bouncy bouncy. You put two and two together. And it for sure doesn’t look like Baywatch either.

I told you all that I have slowly been weaning Braedon for the past month. Well this week came the time to finally drop the last bit of pumping. My body’s supply had decreased to the point where I maybe got two ounces out of that pumping. I figured I would adapt quickly to dropping that final bit of milk. Ha!

While it certainly could be worse, the tatas are making themselves well known around here with the swelling, tightness, and tenderness. Oh sweet heavens that sounds straight out of a trashy romance novel. And it’s only about to get even less classy.

IMGP1051-1

I have been doing all I can to ease the process and help it along…including stuffing my bra…with cabbage leaves. Yes, that bumpy mess you see in my shirt is a bra full of cabbage. Don’t come over for our stir fry dinner tonight! Winking smile

I have also done the tricks of taking Benadryl to help dry up (only thing that worked after M), strapping the suckers on lock down night and day, and avoiding anything and everything that can encourage milk production. Well, except for one thing I refuse to give up…

IMGP0548-1

You would be crazy to think I would go days without my beloved morning breakfast. I’m already losing hair at an alarming rate thanks to the hormonal changes. Don’t take my oats, too!!

Oh, you didn’t know you lose hair too in this fun?

A wad of my hair after one shower. And don’t say I didn’t warn you about nasty pictures in this post! I guess I better stop before I go too far over the edge. The good Lord knows I have already frightened you enough with dinner invitations including cabbage and tacky Baywatch references. Hope you’re having a good day!

  • What’s the craziest “remedy” you have ever used?
  • What’s one food you could not give up even for a week?

Going without oats and apples for even a few days would drive me nuts!

  2. Kara says:

I did Sudafed and ice packs. Oh, the ice packs. My boobs were like two painful boulders. I was like a junky “Maybe I can just pump a little, just to take the edge off!” in rehab.

I’m even more impressed with your killer pace on your run! Run from that lactation pain! 🙂

  3. Oh man, this had me laughing at my desk! I lose an insane amount of hair every night too but I have no breastfeeding hormonal issues to blame. I’m seriously amazed I have hair on my head still with the amount that falls out every day. I hope the soreness ends soon for you!

    • Jen says:

Haha…this is almost exactly what I was going to say! As much as I “shed,” I am often amazed that I still have a full head of hair. 🙂

  4. Ok I shed crazy amounts of hair in the shower too — And Jason seems to find hairballs in his clothes (after being in the washer/dryer with my clothes) — boy he sure loves finding a hairball in his sock 🙂

After reading the title + “scary pictures ahead” I kept thinking somehow you found a bug in your bra!!! Ick.

  5. Jess says:

I know that you’re in actual pain here-but I can’t help but laugh at this post. Does the cabbage actually help or just act as a border to keep your shirt dry (lol)?

Also, I think I might lose the much hair normally and wouldn’t want to give up my daily banana 🙂

    • Tina says:

No worries. I find it pretty freaking hilarious too that I’m walking around with cabbage down my shirt. LOL

It’s supposed to help relieve tenderness and dry things out. Not sure how though. It’s probably some cruel joke a man started years ago.

      • Therese says:

In nursing school we learned that it’s been a remedy in Chinese medicine and supposedly cabbage has an Aspirin-like compound in it. So… did it actually help at all? It sounds like a run is going to be painful no matter what haha.

  6. You crack me up!

But seriously, when you’ve never had a kid, no one tells you the down and dirty facts about what having one does to your body. I’m planning to start trying to get pregnant in December, and I’m nervous about all the stuff that I haven’t been told but that will surely happen to me. I hope I’ll take it like a champ, but I still would like to be prepared. I had no idea that stopping breast feeding could be so painful!

  7. Emily says:

I looked like Dolly Parton when I weaned both of my babies. Oh, the pain! I didn’t know of any home remedies and just suffered through.
I do the same thing with my hair when I wash it! 🙂

  8. Gahhhh – you made me laugh out loud you poor poor girl! All the things they don’t tell us childless girls about!

  9. Haha love this post, you’re too funny! 🙂

Wow seriously though, I never knew about the hair part, especially that much?! And I already have thin hair to begin with, yikes!

I definitely could not give up my beloved Greek yogurt…I have it for either breakfast or lunch everyday!

  10. Ahhh I had no idea you lose hair when you stop breast-feeding!!! The things I learn about motherhood from your blog! 😉

  11. Ginger says:

oh I am NOT looking forward to this in a couple of months! I was wondering if my hair didn’t fall out after giving birth bc I was nursing and if it would when I stopped. goody. lol

  12. Lol, you ROCK!!! I love your posts girl!!!! Hahaha, I think I would do the same funky home remedies if I had to 😉 I have tried a lot of different things, but I can’t remember if there was one really funky one….maybe Apple Cider Vinegar on my face?! It STINKS!

    xxoo

  13. I could never give up apples for a week. I have been obsessed with them for about ten years. I average at least two a day! Thanks for the warning about hair falling out when you stop breastfeeding, I’m totally not lookig forward to that!!!

  14. WOW! Did you have a lot of pain from being engorged when you were starting to breastfeed?

I’m not sure if my “girls” just cooperate with me as I change schedules or what but I took away 1 pumping session and then a 2nd one a few weeks later and didn’t have any pain. In fact I just make more milk when I pump the other times now. You’ve got me all wondering what’s gonna happen when I totally stop!! 🙂

    • Tina says:

That’s how it was for me until I stopped completely. Then the evil soreness kicked in. And yep – engorgement pain at the beginning too. Not fun!

  15. jess @ Jess Go Bananas says:

My friend once put mayo in her hair and she came to school looking like she had just stepped out of the shower!! The only thing I have ever done is put honey on my face. Whew! Craaa-zzyy I tell ya! It seemed like it was going well….until my face stuck to my pillow at night! lol =]

  16. Lisa says:

This is hilarious! I mean i’m so sorry you’re in pain.
I went cold turkey and oh does this bring back memories! oye!
and the hair…. i lose enough to make a one wig a day, but noone ever told me it would get worse after having a baby. I’m sure a lot of girls/women are thanking you for this post right now. Nasty/funny pictures and all.

  17. Erica says:

Oh man… And i thought they hurt the worst when you first start!!!hang in there

  18. Efka says:

Try just a cold compress too, when cabbage gets too old. It only works til its cold.

But about hair falling. Interesting. I am considering you lucky you had all your hair to this point. My hair started to fall off the moment I gave birth and exactly 9 month mark, its stopped. Its great now to brush hair without getting lots of hair on the brush.

  19. Sara says:

Just what I needed post lunch–a funny post! 🙂 I’m sorry you are in pain. I had NO idea. I have learned so much about children from you …

  20. Ann says:

I have been losing my hair since July! My daughter is six-months-old and I didn’t breastfeed so I’m hoping this hairloss ends soon! Even though I didn’t breastfeed, I’ve heard from friends that Sudafed works well!

  21. oh wowww I know nothing about this stuff Tina! haha! But that cabbage looks hot on ya 😉 I hope you get better quicker~

  22. Jenny says:

Wow! I lose a ton of hair on a regular basis so Lord knows I may be bald after having kids and weening them – eeek!

I couldn’t go a week without peanut butter. That’s for sure!

  23. Marcia says:

    Cute post!
I have done the cabbage leaves as well as frozen diapers….aaaahhhhh!! felt sooooo good!! 🙂

  24. I almost tried the cabbage thing when my milk initially came in with Meghan (I was so engorged and sooooore), but my SIL said it didn’t work for her. Does it seem to help? I’m taking notes for when Baby #2 is born. I think the milk coming in was the most painful part of Meghan’s birth–no lie!

  25. Hilary says:

Haha…you are too funny! This post and its title made me laugh. When I had head lice as a child (for the second time in a month), my mom washed my hair with Tide AND coated it in petroleum jelly…nasty!

  26. LOL – love it. I never have any bouncy probs thanks to genetics of flat-chested women in my family 😉 And you know what, I am A-OK with that now. I don’t know that I could give up my morning oatmeal…or PB.

  27. Therese says:

Yikes that can’t be fun! I pump before I work out (not necessarily intentionally, but it’s the best time I can fit it in to build a stash) and I can only imagine how much my boobs would hurt if I didn’t! Gah the things we do for our kids 🙂

You tossed those leaves right? Lol.

  28. Lisa says:

During PMS time my chest gets SOOO sore. Running is uncomfortable. They are sore to the touch. I’m lucky I have a super duper sports bra with a huge, thick underwire so that helps a lot!

  29. Right now I do not think I could give up oats, dark chocolate or peanut butter 🙂

  30. Kati says:

I totally did the cabbage leaves…you get desperate!!!

Oh, and I’ve moved my blog. 😉

    • Tina says:

I saw that! And I tried to comment but it wouldn’t let me. I have to use the Name/URL option which didn’t show up. 🙁

  31. Oh my girls are very familiar with cabbage 🙂 I could feed a small 3rd world country with my milk supply – so cabbage was a WONDERFUL (and cheap) way to help with my engorgement!! I never thought I would tell people to stuff cabbage down their shirt – but I usually tell people to buy some just in case. And if you don’t use it – you can always cook with it!

Hope things level off soon! It’s so weird how long it takes.

  32. Tina, you are too funny. I could not stop laughing while reading this, then I felt bad for laughing because I know you’re in pain. Then I started laughing again. Hope the girls start to feel better soon!

  33. Kellie says:

When I had my first baby my milk came in so heavy that nursing pads were a joke. I stuffed infant diapers down my bra. Oh, those fun days.

  34. lol..you are hilarious!
I haven’t had this problem YET…when I was still nursing Henry at 18 months, I got pregnant and my milk just kinda dried up on its own. We’ll see what happens between Clara and the next one.

  35. You are awesome! LOVE the hair in the drain picture. I could NEVER give up peanut butter or chocolate. Just a few more days… hang in there……… I feel you! I had some serious issues stopping cold turkey from feeding my twins. They do NOT warn you abotu that! 🙂 And now that the boys are 20 months my “bangs” (caused from hair loss)have finally gotten long enough to hide. he he!

  36. Ela says:

You are so funny! I hope you’re healing up also. And I so appreciate that you share this kind of info–people should know.

I cannot think of a single food that I have not given up at some point for long periods of time. Makes me a little sad, and of course, I’m perennially confused. What’s ok to eat now? …

  37. I always found this old remedy confusing but for some of my friends it was the only thing that worked. BTW the title of this post was hilarious.

  38. You’re so hilarious! 🙂 This post had me laughing pretty hard. I’ll have to keep that cabbage trick in mind for future reference!

I couldn’t ever go without my peanut butta!!

  39. My shower wall looks like that too. At least it did, until this morning when I wasnt paying attention and accidentally leaned on it. I was rinsing hair globs off my body for five minutes.

  40. Sarah says:

I remember my friend stuffing her bra with cabbage after she finished breast feeding and I have to admitt I found it entertaining. Certainly an excellent use of food as medicine! I hope your chest feels better and your hair stops falling out soon! I know when I was too skinny I’d lose so much hair and it’s no fun to clean out the shower…

  41. This post is hilarious… but also very informative 🙂 Good things to know for when I have kids one day! I shed like crazy now, I can’t imagine what it will be like later.. frightening.

  42. Ohhhh Tina. I love you and your brutal honesty posts so very much.

I had no idea you lost hair in all of this motherhood business, too! Goodness gracious!

  43. You poor thing! I have a friend who is going through this as well. Hope your body returns to normal soon!

  44. hahaha, cabbage leaves. That is seriously awesome. And tres romantique for your lover 🙂

  45. lindsay says:

i was laughing and gagging at the same time. haha! cabbage is new one. Lumpy but big. ‘
    Love your realness tina!

  46. Oh goodness – just one of the many reasons why I love you.

  47. There is no way that I could give up turkey sandwiches, even for a week. I eat them everyday for lunch, literally everyday. I love it.

  48. Dorry says:

I don’t think I could go a week without bananas and almond butter. I crave that combo! Hormones are SUCH a bitch. Seriously.

  49. Brooke says:

I don’t know if you have tried it but Sage Tea helped me dry up with my first daughter. I am hoping when it comes time to wean my second daughter that it helps again. I kept producing, and producing milk even when I had tried to stop nursing with number one. I swear the Tea was the trick for me.

    • Tina says:

I have heard of sage tea, but haven’t tried it yet because I was unsure how well it actually would work. If things don’t get better soon I will have to go find me some!
