In My Wildest Dreams

Posted: September 14, 2011 at 7:02 pm

I woke up in a crabby mood this morning. My “ow ow ow” run didn’t particularly help things. I think I just needed some good food to resolve the cranky pants issue at hand.

In my wildest dreams we could have the fresh fruit of summer with the fall weather and traditions, plus the goodies of holiday baking. I scored two out of three of those today. Fall weather has decided to go AWOL for the time being.

Now that the temperatures have soared back up in the 90s I want the fresh, sweetness of summer fruits. I sadly know things like fresh berries and peaches will soon form a distant memory in my mind, so I have decided to do my dang best at eating them in mass quantity before I let that happen.

I find fresh peaches so finicky. They stay hard as a rock and not nearly juicy enough for what seems like for-ev-er and then suddenly turn into rotten mush. I thought my last of three peaches from my groceries this week would have bit the dust by this morning. Imagine my delight when I discovered the perfect juicy peach. Half of that sucker went right atop my oats along with some berries.

The other half went right into my belly, of course. I needed something to occupy my mouth while my breakfast cooked nuked.

The perfect breakfast. I shall miss you, fruit, in the coming fall and winter months! Thank goodness for Honeycrisp apples to ease my woes.

And for holiday/seasonal baking. It makes me smile. So, I will bust open a can of pumpkin (pumpkin pie mix fail has been resolved!) and bake up a pumpkin good even with things still teetering between summer and fall. Fall themed baking and fresh summer produce all in one day? Yes, it’s what dreams are made of.

Just like this Pumpkin Carrot Cake Bread.

Oh, ho ho. You read that right. I had mad cravings for carrot cake muffins…and then for pumpkin bread. Let’s allow the two to meet, get a little frisky, and craft this love baby. It may have ruined dinner because I couldn't stop "taste-testing", but it was sooo worth it.

Moral of the story: Good food can definitely mend a sour attitude. Especially when it features the best of both worlds.

  1. That bread and oatmeal looks sooooo good!

  2. Fall wins the season contest for me. Apple picking, cider donuts, baking, pumpkin…love it all! That bread looks delicious! I probably would’ve just eaten that AS my dinner 😉

  3. I love love all things fall and holiday related – the football, pumpkin, Starbucks holiday lattes, holiday decorations, family vacations…now if all that can be combined with mild 75 degree temps and bountiful fruit and all together it would make a baby, that would be a perfect season for me! 🙂

  4. I agree– peaches are the MOST finicky fruit!!! I feel like mine are SO hard forever, and then suddenly they’re moldy and soft.

    But when they’re good…they’re REALLY good 🙂

  5. It must have been crabby Wednesday b/c that’s how I was all day. I’m with you on peaches, I love them, but it’s so hard to find the perfect peach. Season of my dreams would be summer on the beach – ok, all year, but you asked for a season 😉

Ahh peaches in oatmeal? Genius. Haha. Must try. As for topics…how do you do it all?! How do you come up with great recipes all the time (well to me, it feels like all the time!). And how did you bone up on blog design etc…or did you get help for it?

  7. Dorry says:

I LOVE fall weather, but also love the fresh berries of summertime, and all of the pumpkin holiday treats. Of course spring is a wonderful time of year, too! I really love something about all of the seasons – I just wish we had more of an autumn in Texas. 🙂

  8. Meg says:

I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who has that problem with peaches! I picked what I thought was a perfectly ripe one and it was completely mealy. *gag*

  9. Your temps are back up in the 90’s?! Wow…today we had a high of 55, rainy and overcast. Fall is definitely knocking at the door here in Colorado!
Im with you on running in the dark too…. I’m a scaredy-cat when it comes to those kinda things!

  10. Oh, your bowl of oats looks gorgeous!! There is nothing like a fresh juicy peach in the height of the season! My perfect season would have the light temperatures of fall weather (mid sixties to seventies), all the beautiful colors of the changing leaves, lots of outdoor runs, iced coffee, and all the berries and melon I can eat…with pumpkin on the side! As long as it’s not pumpkin pie filling! 😉

  11. I just bought a peach tonight and had the thought that it may be my last until next summer. 🙁

That bread looks incredible! I am so excited for the pumpkin and other squash creations.

  12. GAH everything i want!! 11 days out, you can understand haha btu that bread looks so so so good!!!

  13. Khushboo says:

As much as I enjoy peaches, I don’t think I would have fully appreciated them until I try 1 from Georgia!

  14. Pumpkin Carrot Cake Bread… it sounds like a dream come true! Definitely making this!
