What The Past 24 Hours Taught Me

Posted: October 3, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and last night was definitely a desperate measure. I found myself crawling into M’s bed to sleep with her last night after she kept waking every 15-20 minutes screaming for mommy.

“Tingles” are more powerful than any medicine. The light, soothing, goosebump-giving touches across the back used to be the only thing I craved when feeling under the weather too. In fact, I would take tingles over a massage any day .

I’m thankful we let M jump straight from toddler bed to the spare queen bed we had. More room for those desperate nights.

Sound machines are pretty nifty. Despite sleeping with a kicking toddler, I slept pretty dang well thanks to the sounds of “soothing rain”.

I don’t care how well rested I feel, the day must begin with coffee. Especially on a chilly fall day.

Picturesque, no?

I need to finally find a new pediatrician for Braedon and Makenzie. We had billing issues with our current office after the last appointment. The doctor called Braedon a “she” his entire last check-up. It took over twenty minutes to get through the phone line today to even schedule an appointment for my sick child.

I will give them credit that today’s actual appointment wasn’t terrible. It didn’t take the standard TWO HOURS in office and I liked the doctor we saw today. Too bad the office has gotten so big we can’t be guaranteed to see him and the whole atmosphere is much less personal and caring. I am just over it.

And on a high note, Chelsey knows how to pick a good book.

I just can’t put it down! And I never knew how much I missed reading a real book. Don’t be surprised if I disappear off the face of the blog world for awhile. Wait. Do be surprised if that happens. I guess I should say don’t be surprised if I don’t do laundry all week. Yea. That’s more like it.

  • What is the last good book you read?
  • What was a special thing your parent did to help you feel better when growing up? Tingles! The tingles!

I’ve never heard of tingles, but I’ll have to try ’em next time I’m under the weather! Poor M! I’d have to say cuddling with my dogs is a must when I’m sick. I got mono 2 months into my marriage/new job, and my puppies slept the days away with me. It made all the difference.

  2. I’m sorry your baby girl is sick! 🙁 I can’t imagine how helpless that would make a mother feel (someday). I’ll send good thoughts her way!
I need a new book to read…what’s that one about?!

    • Tina says:

It’s kind of odd. It’s a girl who can taste people’s emotions through their cooking and the things she learns from it. Hard to explain, but it sure is captivating.

  3. My mom always made the best homemade chicken noodle soup and toast for me when I was feeling under the weather.

I can’t think of the last good book I read. It has been a while and I love reading! Maybe this is a sign I need to pick up a new one to read!

  4. That picture of you and M sleeping in her bed is so cute. You both look so peaceful.

  5. i’m sorry but all i could think about during this whole post is HOW did you get that adorable picture of you and mackenzie sleeping!? so precious.

  6. Mellissa says:

I saw her in the bed and thought what a huge bed for a little girl, I would love having that much room when I sleep.

  7. Aww, that first picture is so sweet, Tina:) And I love your sorta-matching, side-by-side water bottles.
Hope M feels better soon!! <3

  8. Awwww…what a sweet picture!

Umm wow – that sucks on the pediatrician. I’m sure there are better managed offices out there (I wish I could recommend you to mine – they are amazing).

When I was little my mom use to come in and rub my temples to help me relax/go to sleep. I do it to my kids too 🙂

  9. aww poor little thing! I hope she’s feeling better! What a great mamma you are. 🙂

The last book I read was The Help and I loved it. I think everybody has read that one by now!

  10. jobo says:

LOVE sound machines 🙂 I still use a fan as white noise at night…it is soothing and drowns out noises! I totally can relate to that one!

  11. Wasn’t exactly tingles, but yeah, my mom would lightly rub my back. Feel better, M!

  12. Alyse says:

I loved my mom doing that to my back when I didn’t feel good and sometimes when I was just fine! I’d drape myself over her legs and say, “Please?” Mommies just have special fingers. 😉

Last good book I read: “The Morning River” by W. Michael Gear. It was wonderful.

  13. Lauren says:

Aww, so sorry your little one is sick. 🙁 I still want my mom to crawl into my bed when I’m sick too.

  14. Brittany says:

I never called them the tingles but I would always beg my mom to tickle my back!! It is the best. She is too precious, I hope she feels better!

  15. My mom used to rub our backs. It was the best and always made us feel so much better!!

  16. Erica says:

oh no! I hope you get a nice nap in today! I am not loving our pediatrician either…calling your son a she? I mean, really?

  17. I always wanted my mom to rub my tummy. Always did the trick.

  18. Jess says:

Aw that pic is so sweet! My mom used to let us crawl into bed with her when we were scared or sick and just the scent of her nearby was enough comfort for me.

  19. Growing up, if you had a stomach ache, you got to eat BBQ Fritos and drink Sprite. If I had a sore throat, dad made homemade Chicken Rice soup. Miss that.

  20. I have been wishing I could read a good book! I’ve been up to my ears in textbooks though…. 🙂

  21. We call it “kitty” in my family because it feels like a little kitty walking on you. Every night my husband & I rotate with “giving kitty” on each others arm or back….its calms all stress, all worry and I truly believe it is a magic relaxer…. 🙂 Tingles – i like name too!

    xoxo from Trinidad

  22. Aww that picture is adorable! I have yet to sleep in the same bed with Meghan, but secretly I think it would be fun for a night. (Okay I guess not secretly since I just said it…) Just one night though–that would be enough. 🙂

  23. We didn’t call it “tingles” but I know exactly what you mean. My mom used to do that all the time and it was so comforting, especially when I wasn’t feeling well.
I’m reading Gap Creek right now and it’s pretty good. I’m surprised I like it so much because it got pretty bad reviews.

  24. I read that book this summer and really liked it!!

I hope your girl feels better soon 🙁

  25. Adorable pic of you and your little girl! I totally agree about the morning coffee…it’s just PART of my day. Oh — and great read, btw. The end is a little weird (you’ll see what i mean!) but truly fascinating 🙂

  26. Awe! Sorry M is still under the weather. Tingles are where it is AT! Haha, my mom used to do that to me too, especially around my face when I was sick and having a hard time falling asleep. I keep trying to teach my husband how to take care of me when I am sick like my mom did, but it just doesn’t work! Hahaha.

    I hope she’s feeling better soon 🙂

I am reading Night Circuis and LOVING it! I can’t wait to finish it!

    • Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs says:

OR “Circus” spelled correctly. Don’t you hate it when you notice it AS you click the “submit” button?

  27. I hate when kids are sick. I remember when D almost 3 and he was so sick and didn’t want anyone but me. He had to sit up to breath and every time he woke up, he would cry for me, which made sleeping brutal. So each night until he got better I would sit in our recliner with him on my chest because it was the only way either of us could sleep. Let’s say I was a walking zombie after three nights of that. Good times.

  28. Lisa says:

Sorry your babies are sick. But glad you were able to read a bit. I love reading and I added this book to my library queue!

  29. That picture of you and M is so adorable! I hope she feels better!

I just read the Help. It was so good!

  30. Poor little M, hope she feels better soon!

  31. Meg says:

Aww… that picture of you and M is too cute for words. My, what a big bed for a little girl! 😉 I loved Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. It made me crave lemon cake for weeks afterward, though.

  32. Hilary says:

Such a cool coffee shot! Having Vick’s vaporub rubbed on my chest/back always made me feel better growing up.

  33. My mom got me that book for my birthday and I have been meaning to start it! I haven’t read a book in a long time, and this one is actually the first one on my mental list of books I own and haven’t read. Sounds like I need to get on that!

  34. I am reading The Time Traveler’s Wife right now…and recently finished The Help and am only the waiting list for Sarah’s Key. I would love a Kindle, but not in the budget, so I’m forced to read the actual book! I’ve heard this one is good!

  35. this post is so sweet 🙂 my mom used to give me “tickies” when I wasn’t feeling good.. she would lightly scratch my back and head with her fingernails… it felt so good! Unfortunately I taught my boyfriend tickies and instead of him giving them to me I have to give them to him.. didn’t work out quite as I planned.

  36. Jessica says:

A good pediatrician is a must. I kind of fell into mine when my, now teenage, girls were little. He was the on call ped at the clinic they went to. Insurance changed and we found a new one and they got a bit older so it wasn’t a big deal. But when I had my son, almost 3, I googled the on call doc. As luck would have it he had his own practice less than 5 miles from me. He and his staff is amazing. It doesn’t hurt that he looks like “The Rock”.

  37. I just finished Jaycee Dugard’s “A Stolen Life”. It was interesting, heart breaking, inspiring, and entertaining. I am always looking for a good book so I will have to check this one out!

  38. Aww, precious!

I know the feeling. I’ve been up a lot at night with my teething one year old and it’s definitely nice to have a bed in his room to crash with him on.

  39. Khushboo says:

Totally agree about the coffee- half the time I am buzzin but still drink my iced coffee in the morning. I think I do it more for the ritualistic aspect :)!

  40. […] could have started off as a recipe for disaster – a sick child, a good bit on the to-do list, and a Monday. Ick. Yet, I still ended up having a really good day. I […]

  41. The last really good book I read was The Little Book by Michael Selden. Time travel books always get me. I loved it!!

  42. Ugh, sick babies are never fun – and neither are pediatricians who don’t pay attention to their patients! I’m hoping M is feeling better.

Glad you’re liking your first read! I loved that book.

  43. Yay for big beds and sound machines! I’ve been sleeping with my sound machine since i was 9 or 10! I kinda can’t sleep without it 🙂

  44. (I’m catching up on posts right now, so sorry if you do this in a later post, but…) You should share your thoughts on the book once you’re finished with it! I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on it, which only makes me more curious, of course : )

  45. Rebecca says:

LOVED that book. It really inspired me to write more. It also made me sad, but that’s not always a bad thing.

  46. You two look so cute cuddled up in bed!
