Right Back On The Wagon {Giveaway}

Posted: November 8, 2011 at 8:06 am

After a weekend full of celebrating (!!!) hearty food, lots of beer, ice cream, and pumpkin pie fudge, I felt ready to get back to my more normal way of eating today. I loaded up on many of my standard healthy eating favorites yesterday.

Oats for breakfast, Love Grown granola and Larabars for snacks, egg sandwich for lunch, and quinoa for dinner. Delicious!

I also felt really antsy to get in a workout. My legs were no longer sore, but I knew I needed to hold off on a run, so spin class it was!

I planned to take it really easy, but I should have known that my favorite instructor would pull more out of me. I actually credit her a lot with increasing my cardiovascular and my leg endurance during her tough workouts. She never fails to take me past my comfort zone. I truly think spin class helps my running. And I’m not just sucking up because she reads the blog either. Winking smile Hi, Sophie!!!

As always, it felt so great to get right back to the normal go of things. I keep way more motivation that way and I know it’s all part of maintaining my healthy habits. Which I am all about, especially during this time of the year with the numerous events and celebrations that happen.

Last week, I had the chance to sit in on a video chat with Bahar Takhtehchian, the senior associate health editor for SHAPE magazine.

Bahar shared lots of tips on remaining healthy during the holidays, including some of my favorites:

  • When you know you will have a heavier dinner out, make sure to choose healthier options during the day.
  • Focus on satiating foods that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats – such as some almonds and an apple – for snacks before big meals out, so the chance of overeating decreases.
  • Get in whatever activity you can, because even 20 minutes can go a long way!
  • Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
  • Remember positive mantras like “Do I want a moment on the lips, or to take care of my body for a lifetime?” <—or something like that Winking smile

I really enjoyed the chat. It covered many ideas I already knew, but it never hurts to reinforce good habits and gain that extra bit of motivation before such a busy and food laden time of year.

In fact, SHAPE magazine and Fiber One (the sponsor of the chat) have teamed up to help YOU as well. One lucky winner will receive:

  • a one year subscription to SHAPE magazine
  • a yoga mat
  • a stability ball
  • a water bottle
  • a pedometer
  • Fiber One brownies

  1. I love having almonds as my go to snack! Always fills me up!

  2. Ginger says:

I’m in love with snacking on an apple with almond butter! And for the holidays, I make one trip through the appetizers with one small plate and fill it up – I still end up eating less than if I “graze” for several hours!

  3. Ginger says:

    Tweeted it, too!

  4. Heather says:

i try to keep up with working out/running when i can but then let myself indulge on a few holiday treats (i.e. christmas cookies 😉 )

  5. During the holiday season, to stay in shape I try to find local fundraisers or runs to participate in for a good cause. I signed up for a local 5k turkey trot to benefit, Infants remembered in silence (IRIS) on Thanksgiving morning. Last year it was well below freezing, you got to love Minnesota!!!

  6. dawn says:

I love to just grab fruit on the go…it’s portable, filling and tasty!

  7. JJ says:

First of all, congrats on the run! I’m just catching up on posts! Wow that’s a great time. I’ve run two and got 2:04 BOTH darn times! I’d love to get under 2!!

Second…great day to catch up….my go to snack is nothing original, but I love it nonetheless…and crisp, juicy gala apple with either some PB to dip it in or some almonds on the side 🙂

Third….if I ever get through a holiday season without gaining weight, I’ll share my tips then! 😉

  8. Steph G. says:

For holidays, I try to enjoy food in moderation and regularly get my butt to the gym!

  9. Keri says:

During the holidays I try to contribute a healthy menu item (usually a veggie tray or fruit salad) to the meal. Then I only get small portions of the foods I’m really craving instead of sampling it all just because it is there.

My favorite on-the-go snack is a mix of cereal, dried fruit, and nuts.

  10. Amber L says:

My fav on the go snack is string cheese. 🙂

    -a

  11. Belinda says:

My favorite snack on the go are baby carrots w/ hummus!

  12. Belinda says:

    I tweeted the giveaway!

  13. Great Giveaway – I have really been wanting a Stability ball for my at home ‘gym’ (a.k.a. Living Room). My favorite on the go snack, as boring as it sounds – a banana!

  14. katie says:

such a great giveaway!!! I love snacking on almonds on the go 🙂

  15. Michelle says:

I am hoping that my training for a 1/2 marathon I am doing in February will help keep me on track over the holidays. I have also made a monthly goal to walk the dog every morning in addition to my workouts. Every extra step helps!

  16. How FUN girl!!!!!

Oh my goodness…ok, I’m totally staying healthy by watching my sweets consumption and drinking green smoothies everyday!

    xxoo

  17. Sandy says:

I am staying healthy through the baking season by allowing myself one serving of something hot out of the oven if my family is making treats and just having one sweet treat out if there are very special options at a party. I like the suggestion in your post.
Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
But still limit it to one!

  18. Linz says:

I go to the gym every day! An hour or so (give a little, take a little) is the least I can do to allow myself the extra indulgence during the holiday times! It also reminds me of my goals and my hard work I have put in thus far!

  19. Kathryn says:

My go-to snack: almonds and apples. Simple.

  20. KATHY says:

great prize package and I would love to win it! I also try to pick special treats to enjoy during the holidays and remember it all tastes the same after the first bite. No need to pig out just be choosy and savor it and taste it not just inhale it. thanks

  21. […] you enter the SHAPE Magazine and Fiber One fitness pack giveaway? You don’t want to miss this one before it ends […]

  22. For a great on the go snack I keep little bags of trail mix and a little bit of dried fruit (raisins, etc.) in my purse. I also usually have KIND bars in my purse which are fantastic when the hunger beast kicks in!

  23. Jennifer says:

    sliced apples 🙂

  24. Becky Przy says:

I stay healthy during the holidays by scheduling a morning run w/my sister and brother in law while they are home. Its not to often I have people to run with, so its great to have some company! Also I always bring a vegi tray to gatherings.

  25. Cheryl says:

I treat the holidays like a typical day.. I dont over do and i dont over think things..

  26. Elana says:

My favorite on-the-go snacks are apples and/or bars (especially lara or luna bars). I haven’t done the best job at staying healthy and not overeating junk through the holidays in the past, but I’m hoping this year will be better! I’m going to do my best to follow these tips 🙂

  27. Awesome giveaway!

This year is the first year I am doing holidays while also trying to persevere in my healthier living lifestyle. Unfortunately, I have ZERO desire to abstain from my holiday favorites. However, my daughter recently broke her finger and is on a very strict no sugar diet for four weeks while it heals. I have decided to join her. I think it’s going to be a good thing for both of us. I have a personal goal that I am not going to gain weight over the holidays. I’m hoping this helps.

  28. Laura says:

thanks for the giveaway, Tina! I stay healthy during the holidays by allowing myself to indulge in the the things that are worth it to me (sweets!) and saying no to those that aren’t (creamy gravies, cheese, cocktails).

  29. I stay fit during the holidays by working out on my lunch break. I also keep apples in the fridge at work and Lara bars or Cliff bars in my purse for healthy snacking.

  30. Shared on Facebook!

I walk all over downtown while at my college campus. I walk to the movies and the pharmacy too.

  31. Awesome giveaway!

I make it a point to stay active, and I do make sure to eat snacks that fill me up so I’m less likely to overeat…but truthfully I am not too concerned about staying healthy over the holidays and don’t usually think twice about indulging in my favourite Christmas treats!

  32. I definitely want to try those brownies! Awesome giveaway Tina 😀
And I stay healthy during the holidays by not focusing them around food. During big family dinners, I load up on veggies, salad, and turkey! I either skip the fattening dishes or just have a little spoonful.

  33. Judy says:

My on the go favorite snack are the KIND Bars, they are so delicious and satisfying!
During the holiday season I just try to workout more than I normally would. I also try new healthier recipes when I cook for just my hubby and me so that when I do indulge, I don’t feel guilty about it! Great blog!

  34. sameera says:

i keep moving and also involve some workout here n there, though not sticking to the routine.I also avoid the creamy saucy foods and stick to the leaner ones.
    Thanks tina for the giveaway

  35. dena b says:

I make sure to keep my workout schedule regardless of how busy the season gets. I also pack my breakfast lunch and snacks to keep myself from tempting treats

  36. LG says:

Nuts and protein bars are my favorite snacks on the go. As for being healthy during the holidays, I just view that time the same as any other time. Have a treat now and then but remember that there is no “on” or “off” the wagon.

  37. MzSlyde says:

I TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT I AM CHOOSING THE MORE HEALTHY OPTIONS. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO ALL THAT HEAVY STUFF THAT IS JUST SO TEMPTING I KEEP MY PORTIONS DOWN. ALSO DON’T TAKE HOME ANY OF THE – OH SO OFTEN BEING OFFERED – TREATS THAT FAMILY AND FRIENDS WANT TO SEND. WORKOUT WORKOUT AND WORKOUT.

  38. tania says:

my fav on the go snack: natural deli sliced turkey with cheddar cheese and a pickle on the side of course!

my mantra: LIFE STARTS AT THE END OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE – thats how i combat the temptations of the holidays and through the year.

  39. On the go snack, almonds! Always easy to grab. Or carrots.

  40. Arwen says:

I always practice moderation. Our family sneaks in a walk/ run whenever we can. This keeps my spirits up and keeps me motivated!

Nuts and larabars are my fav on the go snacks.

  41. Anna says:

I pick and choose my desserts – like I prefer a homemade baked from scratch dessert over a store bought one and eat it guilt free. This way I indulge without going overboard.

I find nuts and dry fruits, crackers are easy snacks to pack with me.

  42. Larissa says:

I keep active during the Holidays just so I can eat more!

  43. Astrid says:

I splurge on my favorite treats like pecan pie but pass on store bought or processed treats.

  44. Courtney says:

To stay healthy during the holidays, I make “holiday favorites,” but I make them healthy. Omitting oil and butter from recipes and replacing them with applesauce or pumpkin puree, adding oats to cookies, and indulging with healthy muffins instead of cupcakes makes me feel like I’m cheating, but I’m really not!

  45. Valarie says:

One of my favorite “On-the-Go” snacks are Lara Bars and a La Croix (sparkling water in a can). I teach high school and when I break out my snack in the afternoon, my students are always curious about which flavors I have. It is a good opportunity for me to plug healthy snacking and exercise to my students!
