i have to take a bite out of it

Posted: November 10, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Good evening everyone!! How goes it? I’m doing great now. Makenzie has continued to improve all day, thank goodness. Hopefully things will get more back to normal soon. Until then, I just go with the flow. I was pleased to see so many of you feel the same way about that when it comes to blogging. We have to be real. Thanks for all of the feedback!

I have mentioned before that I hate eating fish. Except for sushi. I will eat the raw stuff all day long. Give me a grilled/boiled/baked slab and I will grimace. The only exception is Cheeky’s Fish Tacos. Odd, I know. I always thought that and my hatred for even remotely soggy bread were my only ones.

I realized different today. I have some strange food habits. I can be very particular about my food and taste preferences, often in ways that make no sense. I had my typical daily apple today and noticed that since it was a Honeycrisp I had to eat it whole.

IMGP8429

Any other variety of apple? I have to eat it in slices.

I have other things that I have to do with my food. For example, whenever we make sweet potato “fries” at home, I only like them cut into discs. Not the traditional fry shape.

I have to eat with the small utensils. It bothers me greatly to eat with the big fork or big spoon from our cutlery.

IMGP8430

When I have pizza, I crave a soda. I really don’t drink much soda at all. I did the first trimester because it helped ease the queasy, but other than that its far from a go-to beverage. Except with pizza. I adore it with pizza.

IMGP7425 IMGP6756

It grosses me out to mix food or have food touch on my plate. I would eat out of M’s segmented children’s plates if they were big enough. In fact, I had plastic plates with the 3 segments all through high school.

IMGP8433

And oddly enough, as this publishes, I am likely enjoying a bowl of soup with our church small group. I love soup…even though it’s a whole bunch of foods mixed together and soggy. 😉

  • What are some of your more interesting food preferences?
  • Do you prewrite posts? I obviously did this one because I’m at small groups. I actually prewrite many of my posts since I like to write in the morning before M wakes up and during her nap. I then tweak, edit, and add photos just before publishing. I won’t prewrite posts for things we do that I’m not sure how they will go though – like what we do on weekends, etc.

  1. 100% agree with the soda & pizza thing. Even when I was a kid, I always drank milk or water but was allowed soda with pizza. It’s definitely something I still crave. As far as my food touching, though, I’m the opposite. Love mashed potatoes mixed with peas and corn on Thanksgiving! Yum 🙂

  2. Ha, I am the same way about eating with the small spoon and small fork from our cutlery! Once in awhile, I have to break out a big fork or spoon because all the other ones are dirty, but I always feel weird not using the small cutlery.

And I crave soda when eating saltine crackers or popcorn. I guess it has something to do with the salt?

  3. Anna says:

I agree completely with the fish – raw is the only way I eat fish (with the exception of tuna from time to time). Apples must be sliced, small utensils > big utensils, and I actually always end up doing discs for my sweet potatoes too.

Now I’m craving a bunch of nice crispy apple slices for a snack followed by sushi for dinner! I’m guessing only one of those things will actually happen 🙂

So glad to hear that Makenzie is starting to feel better.

  4. I hardly ever prewrite posts. I just don’t really have the need to. As for weird foods…I am all about mixing up weird. I don’t think I even know where to start! Have a great night Tina and I am so glad M is feeling better!

  5. I HEART FISH TACOS!!! Most peeps around here think I’m crazy when I say fish tacos. They are so awesome!

See, when I eat pizza, I have to have beer. They just go hand-in-hand for me 🙂

So glad the bb is feeling better! Bless her little heart.

    • Tina says:

I used to think fish tacos sounded nasty too. Then, my sister convinced me to try some where she works and I fell in love. I will only eat them there and one other place bec its the only ones I trust to taste good.

  6. LindseyAnn says:

Oh, I’m DEFINITELY with you on the no food touching thing. I do not like it one bit!
My other weird food issue: I do not like extremes. Meaning, I can’t handle things that are too hot or too cold. I prefer my hot foods more lukewarm, and my cold things slightly warm and/or melty.
I also cannot bite in to things well–I cut fruit in to pieces, or break pieces of things like sandwiches, bars, cookies, etc.
Glad to see Little M continues to feel better!! 🙂

  7. I like any type of fish:) I could not agree with you more about pizza and soda. The only food preference I can think of right now is that I have to have ice cream with my cake….I don’t like just plane cake unless there is huge globs of frosting! I guess it is pretty strange that I literally could eat anything with ketchup! Love the post!!

  8. You would hate my Thanksgiving plate now. I pile everything on it, mix it up, and eat!

And sometimes I prewrite posts. I prewrote one early today that I will use when I’m in a crunch 🙂

    • Tina says:

Ewww. Yea couldn’t manage that. LOL

And I don’t really prewrite them for too far in advance. The one I write in the morning will be for the morning, just written a few hours in advance. Although I certainly have written things well in advance when needed before too.

  9. Jennifer says:

I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to respond to the post that you wrote about your dad, but life’s been hectic (though not as hectic or frustrating as yours!) over the last couple of days.

I do want you to know that I deeply appreciate your sharing of your experience, your outlook, and your decisions with us all. I’m seeing my dad tomorrow for the first time since August, and am quite nervous. The attitude with which you approach your relationship with your father is one that I am going to try to emulate (though it’s hard with such counter-pressure from my husband, who abhors my dad). Thank you for giving me food for thought, and for being an inspiration – as always.

    • Tina says:

I will be sure to say a prayer for your meeting. I know how tough that must be. You have strength and control over your own actions though. You may not be able to control him, but you can choose to live with peace and not let him hurt you. I’ll be thinking of you!

  10. Lee says:

Sometimes when I’m at work and sort of bored, I’ll prewrite a post. But usually I just write them before I post them.

  11. I most definitely prewrite posts! Especially recipes! When I’m not being creative or I haven’t done anything different in my life.. I have recipes in the draft section waiting to upload!

BTW, soo glad you are attending FitBloggin!

  12. Heather says:

you are so cute…i definitely don’t have aversions like that at all but i definitely have preferences…like i like to eat apples in slices because otherwise it gets stuck in my retainer (the one that’s glued in behind my bottom teeth), and i definitely would rather have coke with pizza!

i typically only prewrite posts if i know i’m going to be really busy but usually i do it all in the moment 🙂

  13. I have the same utensil issues. I am one tiny lady–I do not need giant spoons and forks!

And I only eat ice cream if it is STIRRED into a milkshake-like consistency or off of a cone. I think I picked up this habit from my grandparents, who used to stir my ice cream for me lol.

I eat pizza like a normal human being nowadays, but when I was in middle school, I used to separate the cheese+pepperoni from the bread, lick the tomato sauce off of the bread, eat the bread, then make pepperoni and cheese “sandwiches” and eat those last. Yep. I think I did this because the cheese was my favorite part.

    • Tina says:

Oh my goodness on the pizza! I’ve never heard of that. And a lot of work for pizza eating. LOL

I used to do the icecream thing when I was younger actually.

  14. Soooo we’re kind of the same person. Unless it’s a salad, I hate when my foods mix. I used iced tea spoons to eat everything. And I love a soda with any kind of junk food. Also I pick sweets apart and save the chocolate chips for last!!

  15. Totally know what you mean about small spoons. I can’t STAND using big spoons, especially for cereal. Love my small ones 🙂

Sometimes I prewrite my posts if I have time, and then I just go back and fill in the pictures and tweak things if everything didn’t go quite according to plan!

I’m weird about food to. For example, I love green beans, but only when they’re crunchy. Mushy green beans make me want to barf! And I can’t eat eggs without a piece of toast to go with every bite.

I guess everyone has their quirks 🙂

  16. Karen says:

I am totally against food touching/mixing on my plate!! I would use the separated plates too (if my girls didn’t take them first)!

  17. When I’m feeling ambitious, I prewrite posts. Usually, what appears on my blog is a mix of posts written that night and things I’ve written in advance and schedule to run when I think I might not have a chance to do a live post.

I guess the weirdest food thing I do is with a slice of cake: I eat all the cake out, saving the frosting for last.

I also prefer my apples cut into wedges … even the Honeycrisps. 😉

  18. Angela says:

I have to eat with small utensils too!! It drives me crazy to eat with big ones. I also have to cut my watermelon of the rind first and cut it into cubes – I don’t like eating it off the rind because they always touch the sides of my face and get them all sticky. Maybe I’m just a messy eater!

  19. Rebecca says:

I don’t pre write, normally I think of my posts in my head on my way to work, I have a book where I write ideas down though for future posts.
hahaha I can’t eat with large utensils either.

  20. I only want a soda with popcorn. I must mix my veggies in with mashed potatoes (especially peas and carrots). I try to write my posts throughout the day. I found that if I totally prewrite it, things tend to change too much and I sometimes forget to edit.

  21. Liz says:

Haha – doesn’t everyone have weird quirks about food? Let’s see… I have to eat the top crust of bread before the bottom, unless there is something yummy like seeds on top.

  22. Toni says:

I wont eat tomatoes on a burger or in a sandwhich but I LOVE them in a salad!

  23. Anna says:

I don’t like my food touching either, unless it is supposed to be touching like in soups or casseroles 🙂

  24. Becca says:

One of the Freshman girls HATES when her food touches. She FREAKED OUT at us while eating waffles because we let our syrup mix with our sausage or whatever. We then proceeded to tell her that she was mixing food—waffles + whipped creme + strawberries. Which she insists is different because those are TOPPINGS. Hahaha.
I don’t drink much soda. I don’t have a thing about my food touching (LOVE mashed potatoes + corn!), but there are certain foods I refue to eat. I REFUSE to eat “chicken of the sea” — give me tuna! And the only berries I’ll eat are strawberries–the rest are not my thing. Raisins are a no-way, but grapes are fun.
I have some quirks, but don’t we all? 🙂

I’ll prewrite once in a while (there’s one I’m working on now), but for the most part it’s just whatever’s popped into my head at the time. I’ll think about what I might post, get ideas, and do it that way, but for the most part it’s just a moment-by-moment thing. So far. 🙂

  25. Loriana says:

That’s funny. The only apple I HAVE to slice is a honeycrisp but I’m pretty sure “no matter how you slice it” (cheesy…) they are amazing!!

  26. Jenny says:

I have to eat with small utensils also! I don’t know what it is, but eating oatmeal with baby spoons is my favorite:0)

  27. I prewrite sometimes – it seems like when it rains it pours so i’ll spread it across posts and then do the ‘day of’ stuff at the end of the day of. If that makes sense!

Love your food preferences! I think we all have our randoms. I can’t eat muffins or bagels unless they’re crispy. I prefer ham hot and turkey cold. I can’t have fish with any type of bread – no shrimp po boy or tilapia tacos for me!

  28. Camille says:

I looove eating with tiny utensils. I eat my oats every morning with a tiny, adorable spoon 🙂

  29. Sarah says:

My husband is the same way with his food! Casseroles make him wrinkle his nose. 🙂 I love to mush it all together!

  30. Haha omg I am the same way with small utensils!! I only like to use small utensils and also have an obsession with plastic spoons especially with cold foods–I also need my hot food steamingggg hot!!

  31. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Tina Reale, Tina Reale. Tina Reale said: i have to take a bite out of it: Good evening everyone!! How goes it? I’m doing great now. Makenzie has continue… http://bit.ly/bcRaLz […]

  32. Tracey says:

I’m with you on the soggy bread and big utensils. Even the idea of soggy bread makes me cringe, yuck!

I don’t pre-write my blog posts because I never know what my day is going to hold. Plus I like to blog at night so I use it as a nice way to recap my day:)

  33. I have a lot of food issues. 🙂 My strangest one, my sisters would say, is that I love peanut butter cookies dipped in orange juice. Then again I have a great lime pistachio butter cookie recipe. I have a thing for citrus and nuts. 🙂

I will sometimes pre-write a blog post, but not more than a day or two ahead. I will start one to make sure I remember what it was I was going to do or to just get my thoughts down.

    • Tina says:

I prewrite like you too. Its only a few hours in advance to get more of the framework set up. Then I fill in before publishing.

  34. Goodness it has been years since I had any form of soda! I do remember I love the taste though 😉

I sometimes pre-write posts when they are “good” ones but most days I just let it flow and then publish!

    xxoo

  35. I totally love eating with small silverware. My husband likes using soup spoons but I like using the little ones!

I love pizza too, even though now I’m a gluten free vegan, I find ways to make pizza with those restrictions!

  36. Mon says:

Yep, I think we all have funny/quirky tastes and preferences, particularly with food.
Nice to know we’re all the same! I wrote a post a while back about the fear of trying new foods (it even has a name, but can’t recall it right now…Neo…something phobia) – was interesting to research!!
I think perhaps it all starts when we are toddlers!!

  37. chelsey says:

I totally have to eat with the small utensils too. That equals more bites for me to savor! 🙂

  38. I usually write my posts after Meghan goes to bed, so I just post edit and publish because I have the time to do it. Some posts, like a book review I’m working on, take longer so are pre-written before I post them. Speaking of Meghan, she’s now awake so I better go get her…boo to daylight savings time!

I’m glad to hear M is feeling better. 🙂

  39. Kristy says:

OMG! Pizza makes you chase soda too?!? I thought I was a weirdo for that connection. Salad kinda does the same thing…. 🙂

  40. Hahaha, too funny! I’m definitely with you on the soda + pizza, and the tiny utensils. My hubby and I can’t stand the big forks and spoons in our set…they pretty much go untouched. 😉
I have a hard time eating just one kind of cereal…I usually feel like I need to combine 2 or 3 at once.

  41. hahaha…I’m so glad I’m not the only one who likes little silverware.. although mine is really just limited to spoons!

also, I have a specific way of chopping up vegetables.. and certain items cant be cut up on the same cutting board..excessive I know.. but it freaks me out.

  42. I write posts the night before, then in the AM I get up, read it and revise if necessary and then post it to the blog. It works better that way — and it gives me time to change things if necessary. But I only post once per day — I have no idea how you and others post more than once per day!

I actually like to mix my foods — take a little bit on my fork and eat all of it together. My favorite is Thanksgiving, because I can basically take all of the foods, mix it in a bowl and eat it 🙂

  43. I am weird about foods mixing too! I can handle some foods mixing, but not others.

I have so many strange food habits, it’s not even funny.

I am torn about pre-writing posts … on the one hand, I have an aversion to structure and scheduling things too strictly, on the other hand, a friend called me last Friday to complain that my post went up at night instead of in the morning (she got used to my schedule by week 2 of my blog). I guess if you condition your readers to expect posts at certain times, you have to pre-write every once in a while.

    • Tina says:

I mainly like having the routine for myself and I think it does help having them go up at more regular intervals. I usually get shorter bursts to write/organize so it helps to split it up and then schedule it.

  44. Courtney F says:

I have to eat from small spoons. I don’t like big ones. We have a drawer of baby spoons that I use.
I eat Subway sandwiches from the inside out with my hands. (I open it up and eat veggies, then meat, then bread.)

  45. Heather says:

I’m a fries cut into circles girl, too!! 🙂
    I never pre-write my blog posts……….maybe I should try that…….?

  46. I find that depending on my schedule and time I’ll prewrite posts. It can be more relaxing and that means I put more of “me” into it. On the food front, I’m partial to eating with smaller utensils and smaller dishes/plates, too!

  47. LOL. I share your small spoon quirk!

  48. Ela says:

I’m a small utensils girl too!

And I tend to mix all my foods together, don’t need them separated at all. I try to ease up on the food rituals, though, because at times they’ve fed into my eating disorder.

    love
    Ela

  49. I’m with you on soda and pizza (but I’m trying to do seltzer instead–my husband wholeheartedly agrees and will not budge on soda and pizza!) I am not crazy about some of my food touching, but over time, I’ve actually started to be OK with it. I do prewrite some posts. Then tweak or edit and add photos before I post and it often causes font issues. So annoying. Happy Friday!
