Embarrassing Food?
Posted: July 13, 2011 at 8:02 amHi, friends! Top of the morning to ya! It’s Wednesday morning, which you may have figured out now means a What I Ate Wednesday post a la Jenn!
Let’s hop right in with the good stuff!
Yesterday morning, I grabbed my standard piece of fruit for a pre-workout snack as I run around feeding little children’s mouths and getting ready for the gym. I don’t like working out with a heavy stomach because then great workouts will make me want to vomit. And vomiting is no fun, agreed? 😉
I completed a full body weights workout followed up with 30 minutes of light elliptical action. No intervals. Just slow and steady. It felt calming, which is just what I needed after the hectic mindset I had earlier. And cereal was just what I needed after a great workout.
Have you heard that cereal is actually fantastic for a post-workout meal because it has plenty of carbohydrates to refill energy stores and some protein as well from the milk? I believe it because cereal sounded good for post-workout today. Have you also heard of Fiber One’s new Honey Squares 80 calorie cereal?
I got a box of this cereal to sample free of charge and have fallen fully in love. I assure you the company did not buy my love. In fact, I promptly went out and bought myself two more boxes while on sale – using two coupons of course. Pick up $1.00 off and $0.75 off printable coupons to use for yourself after hearing how good this stuff is.
It has the perfect crunch, just enough sweetness, ingredients that don’t make me feel like I’m a rat in a science lab, and a healthy dose of fiber (40% daily value!). And I will admit – I like that it has a lower calorie count than most cereals because I can fill up on even more. I love cereal, but I can easily go heavy on the pouring and end up with three servings. Three 80 calorie servings = way more reasonable than three 180 calorie servings. Not that I would know or anything. Ahem.
I devoured a large bowl topped with my diced strawberries and raisins combo. You didn’t think my favorite oatmeal topping would disappear now did you?
None of my meals really got any more difficult than a bowl of cereal the rest of the day either. In fact, I almost feel a little embarrassed by the sheer ease, laziness, and packaged-ness of most of the day’s eats.
Lunch:
A grilled ham and swiss sandwich. Carrot sticks, cucumbers, and hummus. Watermelon.
Snack:
A S’mores Lunabar and a container of Chobani greek yogurt.
Dinner:
I actually pulled out more produce for dinner. I chopped up a zucchini, two small summer squash, a small head of bok choy, some onion, and some mushrooms to stir-fry all together. Since I didn’t feel like cooking a full meal, I turned to the freezer for some packaged chicken egg rolls we had to use. And while the nutritional stats aren’t terrible in those little eggrolls, I can’t deny their super processed state.
I almost felt embarrassed for showcasing meals like cereal, packaged bars, and frozen eggrolls in a What I Ate Wednesday post. No cooking. No creativity. Nothing fancy. Nothing perfectly unprocessed with zero added sugars and zero disodium guanylate.
Then I remind myself I still strive overall to eat as high quality as possible but also without stressing myself over every meal choice. I can’t feel embarrassed for eating what suited me yesterday despite it not living up to some of the standards that occasionally seem prevalent in the blogging world. I always appreciate blogging for opening my eyes to new, fun ways to eat mindfully and beneficially to my body. At the same time, I also have to remain aware to not allow the “blog food standard” I create in my head to overwhelm my decisions. So, I had my egg roll lazy meal day. Chomp.
- Are you a cereal addict?
- Do you ever feel a certain unspoken standard for food on blogs? What do you think are the pros/cons?

oooo I’ll have to try that cereal!! Love it too when the serving is lower in calories since that means I get to eat more of it….totally am with you on that one! 😉
And I just started a blog (yippee!), and would never realize before what a food standard for blogs are until starting one…I definitely know what you mean! Now every time I post I’m worried that my meals may look boring and not at all exciting, but I have to remind myself that it’s me who’s eating the food and at the end of the day, I still have to make myself happy…and I think other people out there may appreciate the boring/normal side of things too since we’re all human 🙂
i have mini chimichangas for just that occasion 😉
i try not to put other’s expectations on myself. being me is hard enough – i can’t take the weight of trying to be someone else too!
[…] had me hankering for another today…because NO I did NOT really feel bad or embarrassed over my meals yesterday. Sorry the sarcasm didn’t come across so well! Back to today, […]
Nothing wrong with a little pre-packaged food 🙂 That cereal looks delicious! Is the serving size one cup?
I always pay attention to grams for serving sizes of things so a serving is 30g which is comparable to other normal serving sizes. You get a lot more volume for it though!
C’mon… it’s all too yummy. Dangerous post for detoxing day. Bookmarked for later.
i really wish we had luna bars in the uk they are so mnay fab flavours. I am not to fussed by cereal. I don’t think their is an unspoen food as everyone is individual but from what I have seen their appears to be trends of certain foods that appear on different blogs.
Hi Sarah! I tried commenting on your blog but couldn’t without the Name/URL option. Just wanted to let you know I visited and I loved the look of all your meals. I’m a huge fan of goat cheese too!
I’m so with you on the blog standards. I try to be honest with the eats I post, but there are meals that I definitely don’t put on the blog.
My kids don’t like egg rolls, but if they did, they’d definitely be on my go-to quick meal rotation. I feel strongly that few foods should be off limits for kids – I don’t want my kids being the ones that scarf down junk when they are away from home. I want them to know there is room for most everything in a diet, but we feel better if we eat more of the good stuff and less of the not-as-good stuff. Says the mom who bought fruit snacks at the store yesterday….
Maybe that fruit snack purchase eroded some brain cells – I put the wrong blog address….
I don’t think you should be embarassed by the “blog standards” of food. A little bit of processed food won’t kill anyone. Obsession with pure whole foods can lead to orthorexia which is just as dangerous ED as anorexia, BED, etc. Plus those egg rolls look delicious 🙂
I sometimes get a lil embarassed of some of my WIAW posts. I’ll look back and see that i ate all one or two colors or not enough veggies or all veggies and nothing of substance. But its allll good! <3 don't be embarrassed for some processed yum! you've got moderation down pact <3 xoxo
Happy WIAW!
ps: you're totally making me want that ceral =)
I absolutely LOVE cereal! It’s my go-to when I lack time/patience/creativity snackwise! And good for you for being real on your blog..we would all like to think we eat perfect morning noon and night day after day after day, but that’s just not reasonable. Once in a while a packaged meal or frozen treat is part of day to day survival! I am so glad to see a blog that isn’t afraid to live like all of us! Thank you!!
Your meals totally meet *my* standards for delicious and an extra 10 points for being easy. Sometimes I feel self-conscious about posting what I eat. Two weeks ago my WIAW post confessed that I ate out twice in one day. I almost felt like lying, but I’m nothing if not honest so I told the truth. It felt pretty darn good 🙂
I have the exact same dinner bowl.
Hmm, well I don’t post about everything I eat, but I like to share recipes that I’ve liked. And I like sharing about our CSA, because I think it’s so wonderful! So, you don’t see me posting when we have a frozen pizza or something, because there isn’t anything I want to say or share about it. If I posted everything I eat though, you would see things like the s’mores granola bar I had today. 😉
Cereal addict? Yes. Which is why I don’t buy it any more. I do keep Uncle Sam’s around to add to yogurt on the rare occasions I eat it.
I think it’s great that you are being real! I think it’s very important to eat real foods but not to lose your authenticity in the process
When I post what I eat, I only feel weird when it’s full of meat, especially red meat. I really enjoy burgers and steak and I just don’t want to offend any vegetarians out there…but then I realize that hey, it’s my blog and I’ll eat what I want 🙂
But yes, I think there is an unspoken standard at least within the community to keep certain things off limits, but I really think that standard just comes from our own perceptions, which of course we can change!
I completely agree that there is an “unspoken” blog standard. I’ve definitely started eating and cooking much healthier since I’ve started blogging thanks to all the positive influence and in the hopes that I’ll have healthful things to post about.
But that being said, I still eat WAY too many things that aren’t healthy. I think it is good to post about the good AND the bad things that you ate since it shows the challenges that you really face, and will help all of us that are in the same boat to see how you address them (i.e. by adding extra veggies, etc)
For posts where I recommend an item though, I do try my best to make sure it’s high on the healthy end of the spectrum, even though I don’t stick to healthy 100% of the time in my diet.
I bought that Fiber One cereal this week, and I LOVE it!!! I can’t believe how tasty it is! It’s been my morning snack almost every day!
I totally feel like there’s an unspoken standard. I actually put pressure on myself to creat these cool things other bloggers create and in doing that I put on a couple pounds. Um… that wasn’t what I wanted to do with my blog. ha! Thanks for just being honest and putting it out there. We all have those days. 🙂 You still made all your meals look really goos on camera! 🙂 I’ll have to try that cereal (after I finish 3 different unopened boxes in my pantry). Oops.

Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed! You know (and we know, not that “we” matter) that you are healthy and happy! Your eats today were by no means unhealthy. You had fruits, veggies, grains, protein, etc. You did the best you could with the time you had! That’s what healthy eating is all about. Sometimes processed foods show up in our diets. It isn’t the end of the world as long as we aren’t doing it all the time. 🙂
Cereal doesn’t do much for me in the winter, but in the summer, I crave it every morning. I find a serving and half is usually perfect in most “healthy” cereals and I pile it high with fresh berries and often sprinkle some raisins in like you!

I lI tried remarking on your website however wouldn’t be able to without the Name/url choice. Recently needed to give you a chance to know I went to and I cherished the look of all your dishes. What you is a very good diet. Continue that procedure, that’s very effective as what experts said. Kindly share something about hectic mindset. I’m curious about it.
