Just My Style

Posted: July 19, 2011 at 8:00 am

Somehow this post I pre-wrote and scheduled for this am popped up on my site last night for a little while. Sorry for the confusion if you’re in the handful who happened to find it!

Goood morning! How are you all? I’m doing well enough. I had a great spin class yesterday! It was the first time in what feels like for-ev-er that I managed to get in on a class from one of my two favorite instructors.

I have a very specific training style that I adore: loud, in your face, and pushing you to your max, while still somehow seeming approachable, friendly, and fun. Sophie and Sara at my gym both have it. The others - well, they’re different. Not bad by any means…just not as loud. Or more playful than pushing. Simply not my style.

I love the push I get from my favorite instructors. The certain motivational phrases they choose to use know just how to make me push past the burning sensation in my thighs on that long, steep climb. The energetic vibe pouring from them pulls me through the toughest of sprints. The sweat dripping off their bodies lets me know just how hard I can work. I like my fitness style hard-core and get-er-done.

My food on the other hand?? I like my food like I like my worship style – laidback and carefree. Especially on days when I have the kids from morning until bedtime.

Peter has been working hard after he gets home from work to take care of a few outdoor tasks on our house that need attention. This leaves me by myself with the kids from morning until bedtime a couple days a week…and I’m not exactly in the mood to cook full meals those days. I could make excuses and have ice-cream for dinner (because that sure did sound good last night), but I make a healthy dinner work. Good thing breakfast for dinner is such a winner around here!

egg hash dinner

I made a breakfast “hash” of sorts. I diced up three red potatoes into small chunks and cooked them in a small bit of oil with some salt, pepper, and onion until they were softened. I then added some spinach to the pan to wilt in with the potatoes. I topped off the hash with two over-medium eggs.

runny egg

Gotta love the runny yolk! I think I love eggs more for dinner than breakfast. Quick. Easy. Satsifying. And cheap, too! Winner winner chicken egg dinner!

  1. Eggs are great for any meal in my opinion 🙂 love them! haha I never eat them with potato though….i really should! http://lauren-whatlaurenlikes.blogspot.com/2011/07/lauren-likes-lunch.html

  2. oh i love breakfast for dinner! too bad i never think to make it though…although i have to say, eggs for breakfast are more my style 🙂 workouts just kind of vary for me…i love working as hard as i can and really pushing my limits but i also did a LOT of that in high school training and give myself the grace to do something not as hard-core too. i do what i feel like…as long as i’m doing something!

  3. I’m going to go ahead and agree with the type of instructor you like too! I love when they are in your face, because it helps to pump me up and get my butt moving, and push myself more than I would normally do on my own.
I am trying to get over my “fear” of eggs. I used to love them, three-minute dippy eggs in particular, but stopped eating the yolk quite some time ago. I think it’s high time to take the “plunge” and eat some tasty, healthy eggs again 😀

  4. I also love that type of spin instructor. the music also has to be great. Unfortunately I haven’t found a great instructor at my gym, but occasionally I can sneak into the city and get to a soul cycle class!

  5. I am loving eggs more and more every day. I’m with you, I prefer them for dinner. Cheap delicious protein source!

  6. Hard core is my fitness style too. Although I don’t take fitness classes, when I was being coached I wanted the coach to be an in-my-face motivator.

Eggs–love them! They are a perfect quick dinner. I miss runny yolks. 🙁

    • Tina says:

I missed runny yolks so much when pregnant too! I think I did sneak a few in there though. I’m a rebel! 😉

      • Krit says:

I have a great article on how overly cautious and ridiculous some pregnancy ‘rules’ are, I definitely eat runny eggs pregnant.

  7. Sarah says:

I could eat eggs for any meal of the day! I agree with you- they’re so versatile, yummy, and satisfying.

  8. Karen says:

That hash looks yummy! A good instructor makes such a difference in spin class. They make the time fly by and you have a great time. I find myself watching the clock waiting for the class to be over with the not so great ones.

  9. I keep trying to be adventurous and eat something other than eggs for breakfast, but I can’t help it- I’m an egg lover! I’d eat them for dinner, too, but Hubbs isn’t a big fan of eggs for dinner. Your hash looks great though!

  10. I love breakfast for dinner. It’s my go-to meal when I don’t feel like cooking something complicated.

  11. OMG I just rolled out of bed and I saw the first pic and thought you put a cut up apple in your shoe. I’m going to go make my coffee, then I will be back to actually read the post. Cute green socks btw 🙂

    • Tina says:

Hahaha! What? You don’t store your food in your shoes? 😉

I need coffee like that in the mornings too.

  12. Jen says:

An instructor’s choice of high energy music makes a class! I also like when they make the class as challenging as possible without wasting time. They realize that the students have invested their time and keep it going full-pace in a positive way.

  13. Kelly says:

Breakfast for dinner is one of my favorite things to do. I can eat eggs any time of day!

  14. Priyanka says:

I have just recently got into group exercising class through spinning and I think I have to still find my style.

I love breakfast for dinner and we usually do a breakfast burrito on Fridays (if we are not ordering take out) with hash, eggs, english style grilled tomatoes and sauted mushrooms in a wrap.Just love it!

  15. jobo says:

YUM! That looks so good!! I love eggs, and sometimes especially for dinner. I added goat cheese to my eggs the other day…O.M.G. heaven!!

  16. I LOVE eggs and could eat them at every meal!! A favorite of mine is making a simple marinara sauce, making little holes in the sauce and cooking the eggs in it! You eat it with toast and it’s delicious!

  17. LOVE egg whites – eat them almost everyday – GREAT source of protien, low in calories and very filling! Just started loving this recipe — http://thehinzadventures.blogspot.com/2011/07/easy-egg-white-veggie-hashbrown-nests.html

  18. Yay for eggs!!! I like them any time of day: in a sandwich for breakfast, on a salad at lunch or a big omelet at dinnertime. I just love them!

  19. I haven’t been to many fitness classes, yet, but I think I prefer to be gently pushed to my limits.
Eggs: Yay! They are a crucial part of our weekend breakfasts. Yum!

  20. For spin, aerobics, etc. I prefer an instructor who is encouraging. I don’t like the ones who say like “You can do this better. Work harder, etc.” Sounds like Jillian Michaels, no thanks. That does not motivate me.

For yoga I prefer an instructor with a very calming voice.

  21. Sam says:

I had breakfast for dinner last night too BUT yours looks way tastier. I am totally borrowing the hash idea, YUM!! Maybe with sweet potatoes. 🙂 I’m with you on instructor style – it makes ALL the difference in how I feel after class. The harder they push, the harder I push!

  22. I like loud, outgoing instructors. I like being pushed and even if my muscles are burning and I feel like I am done, I just can’t bring myself to quit because I don’t want to let them down!

Breakie for dinner is the BEST!!

  23. I’m on a nay on eggs. I tried my hubby’s again on Saturday and spit them out. I don’t know why I dislike them so much!

  24. I love eggs for dinner – I put a fried egg on top of everything: quinoa, spinach, rice..

I love bodypump and spin classes, but the instructor can make or break them!

  25. I eat eggs like they’re goin’ out of style…B, L, D…snack. Whatever! 🙂 I just found a new yoga teacher that I love because all her classes have more flow and she incorporates pop songs that have great tempo with stuff that you’d hear in a “normal” yoga class. It makes it so much more enjoyable for me.

  26. Agreed on the eggs for dinner thing! They taste better and more “special” at dinner time 🙂

  27. It’s funny how much a good or bad instructor can influence your workout – if it’s one I don’t like (or the class isn’t tough enough), I’ll be miserable during and afterward, and the class takes forever. If I get one of my favorite instructors, it’s the perfect workout and it seems like it goes by in 5 minutes!

  28. I LOVE breakfast for dinner! Although, I’m not a big egg fanatic. I would rather keep it simple with a bowl of cereal or maybe have a couple of waffles if my sweet tooth kicks in.

  29. Errign says:

I love eggs! I had egg whites this morning on top of my breakfast nachos! My favorite way to have them ever is either on an english muffin with goat cheese or overeasy with pumpernickel toast! Yum!

  30. I think I eat eggs more at dinner than at breakfast, but I think that’s because I’m rushing out the door in the mornings and I don’t have time.

I love instructors who are in your face and loud at the gym. It’s really motivating!

  31. Cynthia says:

I love eggs! They are one of my favorite foods. I eat them more for breakfast than any other time, but I also eat them for dinner occasionally. Actually, I ate eggs for dinner just last night. Yummy!

  32. I like eggs for dinner too! I love to make scrambles for dinner, or on egg sandwich. I’m not really a big breakfast eater so I don’t eat them for breakfast that often. does M eat eggs too?

  33. chelsea says:

I’m the same way with instructors! I love them loud, energetic, and shouting out all kinds of stuff. No awkward silences in my classes please lol! I hope to be an instructor one day myself and achieve that =D

Eggs are an allllll day thing for me. I know you’re not supposed to eat that many a day/week but they’re just too easy and yummy to pass up!

  34. Breakfast for dinner is the best. My three year old stepson calls it “brinner” and asks for it at least once a week.

  35. Eggs for dinner seems to be trending on food blogs right now. And it sure is making me crave my own runny yolk. Nothing beats it. Put it over a hash, an english muffin, a pasta, a risotto…I think all meals are made better by the presence of a runny egg on top!

  36. Er says:

I could eat eggs at any meal, but I think I eat them most for dinner! I love a nice and easy egg-filled dinner.

  37. Looks delicious!! We cleverly call breakfast for dinner – BINNER…I know..so creative right?
ps Im totally going to have eggs now for lunch or dinner

  38. I definitely prefer a certain style of fitness instructors – I love ones that are motivating, push you into that sprint for an extra 5 seconds, and play awesome music. But there’s a fine balance to it, I really do not respond well to instructors that are yelling and screaming at me boot camp style and I’m left feeling defeated…instead I want to feel rejuvenated and empowered. And I love the workout motto “you can do anything for 30 seconds of your life” 🙂

Eggs are a definite yay for me!! Love ’em for breakfast and dinner – scrambled, omelet style, hardboiled, or runny – love ’em all! 🙂

  39. Krit says:

OK totally off subject but I’ve decided my next house should have a pool, but I’ve heard the maintenance is pretty expensive. I know you have a pool, and pinch your pennies, so I’m curious your thoughts on having one? Worth it, or really not that expensive to maintain?

    • Tina says:

We hate having ours in all honesty. The pool parts can be $$$ but there are certainly ways to do things cheaper – like not heated, using salt water, etc. We more can’t stand the constant upkeep with time cleaning it. It doesn’t help that ours is usually cold so not the most welcoming to swim in.

  40. We totally have the same fitness instructor mentality – I’m the same way!

I LOVE breakfast for dinner… and for breakfast, and for lunch. Basically I just love eggs… and cheese… and toast! Always! 🙂

  41. I feel ya on the workout style. We have the same mindset!

  42. The hash looks great. Eggs are great for dinner.

  43. You know – I have NEVER been to a spin class before. I want to try one out SO BAD!

  44. Sam says:

    here’s the real sam 🙂

i love teaching spin!! i’ve been trying to get the hang of being motivating but inviting, challenging but sweet…it’s tough. and yes please to eggs for supper. yum!!

  45. I prefer eggs with dinner lately. It doesn’t have to be with a breakfast food but maybe with a grain salad and it’s really good. I do love a good sausage, egg, and cheese from Flying Biscuit, though!

    • Tina says:

I told Peter we HAVE to go eat at Flying Biscuit sometime during my half training after a long run. I only wait until then bec I bet it will taste unfreakingbelievable after a long run. LOL

  46. Karen says:

I love eggs!! I could easily eat eggs for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I think egg sandwiches make the perfect lunch!
