What Are You Doing To Me?!?!

Posted: July 30, 2011 at 9:57 am

I don’t think I have ever looked forward to a workout as much as I did this morning. I guess not feeling too well for a week means motivation suddenly through the roof! I didn’t even mind being called out of sleep at 6 am to eat my pre-run fuel. It’s like my body screamed at me to get back on the bandwagon NOW! I said “let’s get the party started” with some Pink and set out for my long run of the week.

Knowing I had taken off since my not too successful tempo run on Wednesday morning, I simply had one goal in mind. Take it slow, so you can finish.

After a week of feeling less than stellar, my body didn’t quite feel the same. Not in a painful sense, though. Purely in a what-the-H-E-doublehockeysticks-are-you-doing-to-me sense. It felt like a brutal wake up call. A GOOD brutal wake up call because once I got going I felt on top of the world. I finished with an unexpected average 9:30 pace. I will happily take that 8 miles!

After a less than optimal week on the healthy living front, a run left me with a ginormous craving for a green smoothie. Today’s mix went back to a basic favorite of mine -

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond breeze
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 5 frozen strawberries
  • 2 large handfuls fresh spinach
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • pinch xanthan gum for thickening

IMGP0223

Ahhhhhhh. A run and a smoothie (in a wineglass of course!) are good for the soul, I tell ya! Now I plan on foam rolling the heck out of my legs to make sure they don’t put me in soreness rehab as I get back on track. I got a half marathon to train for, after all. It’s only 14 weeks away!!!

  • When is the last time your body said “what-the-H-E-doublehockeysticks-are-you-doing-to-me”?
  • What foods/activities help set you back on track with your goals?

MMMMM, I love green smoothies, in a wine glass is only appropriate too 🙂 Green smoothies help me get back on track!

  2. Courtney says:

Mmm! Glad you got a good run in ! I hope you start feeling better soon!

  3. Emma says:

Great run, it is definitely hot out there. I’m training for the Savannah 1/2 Marathon too & did 6 1/2 this morning. Hot but good:) Heading back home to Atlanta for the week….any recommended downtown running routes?

    • Tina says:

Not sure about downtown routes but you can hit up my friend Kristy (www.kristyruns.com) and she should have some good ideas. She leads running tours and everything so she knows the area well. I live outside Atlanta so most of my running happens out of the city.

      • Emma says:

Great thanks! I lived in & around Atlanta my whole life but didn’t start running until I left, so never payed attention to places to run:)

  4. I have a feeling my body will say that to me today when I head IN for a run. (Been down and out with a sprained ankle, and I’m not about to do it in THIS heat!) Bowls of veggies and fruits get me back on track. 🙂

    Glad you’re feeling better, momma!

  5. The last time I “shocked” my body was after my sister’s bachelorette party in January… let’s just say I stayed up a lot later and drank a lot more than my system is used to, plus I ate really terribly. I felt absolutely wretched the next day but after a couple of days of rest and clean eating, I got back into my regular workout routine and felt great again. Apples are my favourite food for getting that “healthy” feeling back again, especially since I usually eat them in the morning and a long outdoor run is also a nice way to feel healthy after a not so stellar week.

    • Tina says:

Oh yea. The feeling after a night of food/drink the body isn’t used to will certainly give that what the heck feeling. I love how relatively quickly our bodies will get back in the healthy groove though.

  6. There’s really nothing like a green smoothie to make me feel wonderful!

  7. I’m so glad your run went great and that you’re feeling better!! 🙂 A green monster does sound really good, I haven’t had one in a while….I now see one in the near future. 😉

I think the last time my body screamed at me was Tuesday. I did my first 8 miles on Monday and when I went to workout Tuesday morning, my body was all “ohhh no you don’t!” I still got a workout in, but it was painful! haha

  8. smoothies are always a great way to get back on track! Stirfrys full of veggies, biking and swimming help me too 🙂

  9. Congrats on the 8 mile run 🙂

I honestly haven’t had a solid long run since my last race in March, so whenever I attempt to do anything longer than 3 miles my body has a legitimate “what-the-H-E-doublehockeysticks-are-you-doing-to-me” moment haha!

  10. Way to go getting those 8 miles done! It can be hard getting back on track when you’ve not been feeling up to par. I think my body was yelling at me during my hot, sweaty 8-miler this morning. Actually, it was screaming: You crazy fool, it’s hot, it’s too early, you should be back in bed!

  11. Way to get back on the bandwagon. I took a few days off and had a horrible night’s sleep (partying neighbors at 2am) but I got my booty out the door for a run and it was so worth it. I told my husband when I was done I felt like I was walking on clouds. Endorphines will do that for ya 😉

  12. I do group fitness classes to motivate myself and get rid of any junk food in the house!

  13. Great job! You are definitely doing better than me today. I overslept and missed my spinning class 🙁 I was looking forward to it too. Have a great day! You are off to anamazing start!! 😀

  14. Khushboo says:

Great going on your run, the first workout after time off is always a killer! I haven’t worked out properly either since Monday due to being down with the flu. I’m still not 100% back but went for a 90-minute walk this morning and it felt so good to move my legs!

  15. I’m pretty sure my body said that each and every day of Insanity! Ha! Teaching my Zumba classes and getting a good lifting session in always motivates me. My favorite healthy foods to get me back on track are smoothies and big salads filled with TONS of veggies!

  16. I love that just-got-back-on-track feeling! Good job with your long run. 🙂

  17. lindsay says:

ahhh yes. totally been there. This happends to me when I get back from traveling a bunch. My legs and chest are like….WTF?
Glad you got back out there, feels good! well, after. haha.

  18. Yesterday I did a BodyRock TV workout – although it was only 10 minutes long, my body was screaaammming by the end of it! Then today, I went to yoga for the first time in about a month. Holy cow. I’m going to hurt tomorrow.

    Great job on the run!

  19. Haha the last time my body hollered that at me was when I wasn’t going to the doc and I kept being physically fatigued, just last week! 😛

Oh, and when I did a crazy lower body workout the other day with 30 lbs. 0_0

  20. Dorry says:

Almost every CrossFit workout I’ve attended, I thought, “WHY AM I HERE VOLUNTARILY????” 🙂

    • Tina says:

Haha! Awesome one. And still I find myself wishing I could find one close enough (and cheap enough) for me to try out the madness myself. 🙂

  21. My body got ticked at me when I went for my last run this week. I definitely can’t run anymore now that I’m in the third trimester. Looking forward to getting back into it after the baby is here! 🙂

  22. Ela says:

So glad you’re feeling better and getting back on track!

Smoothie sounds fab, and so does your run.

My body often asks that question–I guess I go through too many weird diet experimentations! Now that I’m exercising more, though, it seems to like it–although when I tried to do a bunch of jump squats outside the supermarket restrooms (waiting for my husband), I got that kind of “what the heck” question from my body.

  23. Nice job! My legs said that to me during my spin class today. They felt like lead after yesterday’s lifting session!

  24. Lee says:

Good job on the run. My body said that to me during the 5K that I did today. I am not so used to running in 90 degree temps.

  25. LOVE the smoothie in a wine glass plan! This will be happening in my home as soon as the Vitamix returns from the doctor.

It was great meeting you today! Can’t wait to meetup again and get to talk more. LOVING the Love Grown Foods!

    • Tina says:

I know! I hated that it was so hard to hear and talk from different parts of the table. 🙁 I’m sure we will get plenty of other chances to chat and hang out though. Yay!
