Did He Really Just Give Me The Stink Eye?

Posted: September 1, 2011 at 8:00 am

Blogger fail! I completely left you all hanging with how my painful booby run went yesterday. Oops. I guess all the talk of stuffing my bra and hair falling out distracted me. And you probably clicked out of your browser faster than I would have managed to tell you about it anyways. So allow me to do a little victory dance tell you about it now. Deal?

I came. I ran. I conquered!!!!

I love speed runs!

I think yesterday’s run went so well because I took the pressure off myself. I have been following a training plan from the Smart Coach application on Runner’s World. I love it and the variety it gives my training…but sometimes don’t want to worry about the specific “plan” or pacing it gives me for a run.

Yesterday I wanted to do speed work, but I didn’t want to think about tempo miles or laps on the track. So, I just went out and ran –keeping my pace up along the way. And holy smokes..I ran the fastest pace I ever have besides in races. Love no pressure workouts!!! No pressure workouts always end up being the best ones, don’t they?

Yesterday’s run did bring up another running etiquette question though. Passing Other Runners – a protocol?

I ran on my favorite running path yesterday so had the joy of bonding with plenty of other runners, walkers, and bikers out to get their days started. I love the camaraderie you find in others out getting their sweat on as well. Pretty much every person you pass gives a smile, nod, or “good morning”.

While running merrily on my way, I came up on the back of this one dude. I would have to slow down my pace if I stayed behind him, ride his heels, or speed up and pass him. I chose to speed up momentarily to pass him and got to what I felt a comfortable distance ahead of him before settling back to my regular pace. Not two minutes later here comes the same man passing me by and giving me the most evil stink-eye I have ever seen. Well, besides from Makenzie. She does a pretty good one.

IMGP9923

It made me wonder…is there any sort of protocol for passing other runners on running paths? Or was I just dealing with Cranky McCrankerson? Rude people drive me batty, so I want to make sure I’m not one of them!

And in case you were wondering how the cabbage chest played out during the run…

I beat them into submission 😉 RT @: @ nice job! How did the bobbies take it? 😉

  1. Lee says:

I usually say hello or give a little wave when I pass people. What I hate more than the stink eye is when people won’t even look me in the eye.

I’m glad your “bobbies” did well on the run. 🙂

  2. LindseyAnn says:

I usually just say something like, “Passing on your left”, or “I’m coming up behind you” just to warn the person. However, some people just don’t take well to getting “chicked” (the technical term for getting passed by a woman), so it just might have been that.

Good for you, though! That is an awesome pace! 🙂

  3. wow, everyone is so friendly! i normally just pass them and say “on your left (or right)”…why should you slow your run down just because some guy is self conscious? 🙂

  4. Mandy says:

You crack me up with your boob talk 🙂

  5. Kara says:

I run on empty country roads and never ever see anyone other living thing other than cows, so I can’t help you.

Maybe you should get running shorts that say “Suck it!” on the back so at least you’d earn that stink eye.

    🙂

  6. Holly says:

There’s no reason why you should have to slow down just to avoid crushing some random dude’s ego. I get passed all the time and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest–this guy may have had an issue with being passed by a girl? When I pass people, I just make sure to give them enough space so they don’t think I was right on their tail or something. But I don’t say anything other than a smile and a nod.

  7. Marcia says:

I always say “on your left” if I am passing. If I pass I try not to speed up and then slow down….and then they pass me going the same speed. If that makes sense!
I get passed all the time, and only get annoyed if they do that ( speed up to pass and then slow down once they pass me)
    🙂 boobies, bobbies–whatever! haha

  8. Khushboo says:

That guy sounds so lame- he’s probably not used to girls passing him! I would have done the same..in fact runners in front kinda motivate me to speed up and pass them ha!

  9. he was probably just annoyed because you were running faster than him! He needs to get over it.

Yesterday i received the stink eye from my neighbor when I asked him to turn down his bass because it was literally shaking my furniture in my apartment (who needs surround sound for a video game anyway).. I gave him the stink eye right back (and he turned down his volume.. meredith 1, neighbor 0)

  10. Kelly says:

I find that it is an ego thing for men…they don’t like being passed up by women. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

  11. Evan Thomas says:

I try to smile and wave, but if I’m having a horrific run I’ll just put my head down and chug on.

  12. Congrats on the speedy run! I have two sisters so I get the stink eye from one of them at least once every day haha 🙂

  13. I was in the last 200m or so of my run and and I was really cranking it. Like, I mean, a full out sprint.
Okay, so I came up to this guy who was also running and just as I passed him he started to speed up and RACE ME! Seriously. He started sprinting faster, so I sprinted faster, then he sprinted faster until we were neck and neck.

Then I got to my apartment building and stopped in my tracks. When he realized he lost me he stopped and said, “You’re giving up?”

LOL! It was the craziest thing that ever happened to me when I was running.

  14. I think he was just being cranky, but in my experience, lots of dudes are worse about that than women. It’s like they don’t want a girl passing them or something. Odd. I wouldn’t worry about it.

  15. I think he was just being a dork. I would have done the same thing. I’d rather have someone speed up to pass me instead of staying close behind me.

And maybe you happened to pass him right before he was starting to pick up his pace (for intervals or who knows what) — or maybe Gaga started blaring in his earphones and he decided to kick it up a notch! 🙂

  16. I would have done the same thing you did… In my opinion, it’d much ruder for you to ride his heels the whole time than to just pass him real quick, so I think you totally did the right thing!

  17. I’ve been finding it so refreshing to not stick to a plan too specifically lately with my marathon training. I think both me and my running benefit when I do my best to have fun and do the workouts I feel like doing.
I would say the protocol for passing runners is exactly how you described…no need to zoom by or ride on someone’s heals, but pass at a reasonable pace and move over when you’re sure the person is far enough behind you. He was probably just made he got chicked! Some guys just can’t handle being passed by a woman…I always get a kick out of it when they get mad or try to speed past me, huffing and puffing 🙂

  18. Jess says:

This is exactly why I gravitate towards my own running “plans” when it comes to training – I don’t love being tied to laps and miles and numbers and blah! I like to just run and go by how I feel and how long it takes me to run a certain distance to gauge how I”m doing. I think I’m in the minority on this one though, somehow.

As for stink eye – I HATE when we’re out running and we pass a rude runner, that won’t even look at us or say hi even though we ALWAYS say “good morning” – Scott even said “good morning’ during our run LAST NIGHT and I had to remind him that hun, it’s nighttime now, say “good night” hehe

  19. Stephanie says:

He was probably just licking his wounds because he got passed by a girl. Ugh. Neanderthals. What I hate is when I’m biking or walking (yeah, I’m not a runner) on a circuit and I keep crossing the same person over and over. The first time it’s a warm hello. By the third or fourth, it’s just awkward laughs and waves.

  20. Kattrina says:

I have had that problem too. I am always hesitant to pass people because sometimes I inadvertently speed up when someone is in front of me and I’m afraid that once I pass them I’ll slow down again…but I HATE when I pass someone and then they feel like they should speed up just to pass me but then I pass them again. Ugg – people should just go at their own pace and forget about everyone else…it’s not always a competition! I don’t think you did anything rude by passing him – it’s not like you passed him and then out a huge fart or something. I wouldn’t worry about it too much – some guys hate being passed by a girl, and a especially a girl in a skirt (as I have found, because I always run in skirts).

  21. cathy says:

what a grump! some guys just have a *thing* about being passed by a girl…i just find that motivating to go faster!
i find most runners are friendly and give a nod, a wave or a smile, but some people are just super-competitive, even in training!
glad you had a good speed session, tina!

  22. Chelsea M says:

Like many of the previous comments I believe his ego was just bruised about being passed by a girl 🙁

One time while running I saw a very fit runner who I knew I would never catch up to but I kept thinking I would in my head just for a goal to keep me running. Finally about two blocks before I was planning to turn around on my loop I passed her (she must have slowed down I am not a regular runner). Soon enough she ran right past me (sans stink-eye). I took it as I helped push her to get a tougher workout in by picking up her pace, so I felt happy.

Sounds like a good place to run even with the occasional meany!

  23. peacebeme says:

I guarantee he was just peeved to be passed by a woman! I have experienced that so many times!

  24. Anna Crouch says:

That’s weird….I never think twice about passing someone. I don’t think it’s rude at all….I also don’t find myself getting my panties in a bunch when other people pass me. In fact, I think it would be rude if he DIDN’T let you pass him. Every runner is out there running for a purpose and a goal, whether that is to take it easy and take your sweet time, or beat your fastest time. Your goal was speed. So it would be rude for him to not get out of your way to move past. It’s not like you were shoving it in his face! Although maybe that’s how he took it?? It’s easy to perceive things wrong when your tired, having a bad run (or day) and etc.

  25. I am a pretty slow runner so I don’t normally pass people, but I think it’s TOTALLY acceptable. i can’t believe he gave you the stink eye!!

  26. You were fine passing. I have no idea why he should give you the stink-eye! Most people I encounter on the running trail share a smile and nod or quick hello. Never a stink-eye.

  27. Jen says:

I use smart coach too! Hopefully it’ll help me qualify for Boston!!

  28. I also really enjoy the nods and “good mornings” from other runners. It’s nice to have that one thing in common.

The guy you passed was totally Cranky McCrankerson. It’s not like you cut him off or got in his way. I pass a lot of people but also get passed by a lot of people. Maybe he was a new runner and didn’t know how it’s supposed to be done?

  29. These days, I run while pushing a double gargantuan jogging stroller. And I usually DO end up passing, so I have to be really careful. I have hit one lady that i know of…there could be others. :/

  30. I would rather someone pass me then run behind me constantly on my heels. I like to feel free when I run, not as if I’m being suffocated! This guy was just being a d-bag if I do say so myself 😉

  31. Im slow, so I rarely pass anyone but walkers. I dont ever say anything, but I try and look back and smile.
That guy was probably just choked that he was passed by a girl. It probably hurt is ego.

  32. You are SUPAH fast! 🙂 glad your cabbage leaves are working.

  33. Meg says:

Oh, geez, some men take things so personal! It’s no different on the road when I pass a man, and 5 minutes later he’s got to come up and pass me! Get over yourself dude, and maybe he should focus more on his run!

  34. Oh my goodness. I don;t think you did anything rude. I think he was just intimidated by your awesomeness and wanted to assert his male dominance. Just be glad you got the stink eye and he didn’t pee on you…

  35. Oh my gosh, I practically have a phobia of passing people during a run. There’s nothing more awkward than passing someone and having them pass you as far as I’m concerned. I’ve altered planned run routes before just because I saw someone else on my path that I might have had to pass. I don’t even like passing walkers. I also hate being passed and then passing the person later. Not because I’m miffed that they passed me or whatever…I just feel like it’s SUPER awkward. The guy you passed was just being a jerkface, though. Lameo. Maybe he was jealous of the produce in your shirt 😛 hahahahaha

  36. Jen says:

Oh, my…this is hilarious! (obviously, you did nothing wrong, aside from running at the same time as Mr. Ginormous Ego…LOL) Glad to hear that your “bobbies” are okay 🙂

  37. Michelle Fritzler says:

Like others have said you probably just brusied his ego- he probably also drives a really big truck if you know what I mean he has issues.

I always pass people with my jogging stroller and sometimes guys will say “Hey your not supposed to be able to do that”.! HA! I showed them.

What I really hate is when there are a bunch of women or men but usually it’s women who take up the whole darn trail and won’t get out of the way when I am coming by with my jogging stroller. They act like they own the whole darn trail- really annoying.

I also would rather someone pass me then running on my heels or vice versa.

Glad the “girls” are feeling better. I can remember sending my hubby to the store for cabbage for my boobies. 🙂

  38. I’m really shy in real life and usually don’t say anything when I pass, even though I feel like I should, but it’s just not who I am. I usually try to go REALLY wide around them so I don’t scare them to death or bother them too much. According to etiquette, you should say “on your right!” or “on your left” as you pass by on either side of them so they know you’re there and can move out of your way. I just figure most people don’t know what I’m talking about unless I’m on a trail, which I’m usually not. Either way, I don’t think he should’ve given you the stink eye. I think he was just mad you passed him!

  39. Heidi Nicole says:

I think you were fine to pass him – you should never have to slow down to follow someone. And if I am out running I would much rather have someone pass me and get it over with than ride my heels.

He was probably just being ornery because he just got chicked! 😉
