An Ordinary, But Still Memorable, Day

Posted: September 11, 2011 at 4:02 pm

This is what greeted me when my eyes opened this morning.

That excited me more than you can know. I haven’t slept in past 6:30 am longer than I can remember. And boy, did I need some sleep last night! Peter has been out of town this weekend to serve on a church retreat. Whenever he is out of town I just cannot sleep. It takes forever to fall asleep and then I toss and turn all night long. After a few nights like that, my body finally gave in to sleep and crashed hard for 10 hours last night. It was just what I needed.

After waking up, I got myself and the kids ready for church. I really looked forward to today’s service because it was a special ten year remembrance service for 9/11.

I didn’t know anyone personally involved in the attacks on 9/11, but as I’m sure many of us can relate, the memories from that day impacted me forever. It sickens me to think that people can have such hatred in their hearts…but also strengthens me in knowing others can have such bravery in the face of trials.

IMGP1336-1

I won’t go into my story on where I was because there are plenty out there, but I do want to encourage us all to please take some moments of prayer and remembrance for those impacted by 9/11 today. It’s so strange how ordinary this day can feel ten years later…but that it still carries such importance too. Never forget.

Red heart

I had plans to hit the gym after church for my planned short recovery run that I usually do on Sundays. I even drove all the way there and sat in the parking lot for a minute before turning around and heading home.

The thought of getting on a treadmill after doing ten miles on one yesterday just did not sound appealing. Even the thought of free childcare and a break from the kids after a loooonnnng, whiiiinnnny, tiiiirrrriiing weekend didn’t lure me in.

IMGP1334-1

I headed home with my gym bag still packed, knowing it was the right decision. I have had plenty of activity lately so missing one workout won’t hurt in the slightest. If anything, it helped my mental health! Not only because I didn’t have to spend more time on a treadmill, but also because it would keep me from feeling rushed and stressed later in the afternoon.

I had to get Makenzie to my friend’s house just a couple short hours later for some special fun that she was oh so excited for – to see a certain someone she loves just a smidge. Winking smile

My friend got a deal for a four pack of tickets to the Elmo Superheroes show and had an extra one since it was just her, her husband, and their daughter (Makenzie’s self-proclaimed best friend). When they offered to take Makenzie, I knew she would love it. I’m kind of sad that I don’t get to be there for her first experience like this, but we’ll have our time soon enough. Plus, after an exhausting weekend, the break to have just B for the afternoon felt nice. I hope she is having a ball!

Well, Peter should be home shortly, so it’s time for me to sign off. I will see you all in the morning! Have a great rest of the afternoon and evening…

  • What time is “sleeping in” for you?
  • Did you do anything in remembrance of 9/11 today?

I absolutely can’t believe it’s been 10 years already. My day included breakfast while watching “102 minutes that changed America”, church, shopping, and a run. The rest of the day will be cooking for the week and then resting and self care. One thing I did in remembrance was apologize to someone close to me for something… If something happened and I had something left unsaid (like I’m sure many did that day), I would’ve felt quite bad.

  2. Sleeping in is everything later than my usual alarm time, which is 5:30 am. 7:30 sounds good to me! Glad you got some rest!

  3. Corndog says:

I actually slept until 9:00 this morning! My kids are a little older. Then we went to church and said many prayers of love, compassion and remembrance for all those affected by 9-11, also special pleas to God for peace in our world.

  4. Sleeping in for me is noon. Haha, I’m a college student in my defense!

  5. Lee says:

I love M’s Elmo slippers. Too cute.

I didn’t really do anything for 9/11 but I’ve been reflecting on life and how fast time passes.

  6. Love the elmo outfit! SO cute 🙂

  7. jobo says:

Good way of putting it…remembering the day, but not too much detail. We all remember, of course we do. As for the workout skip? Agree. Sometimes it’s just worth doing.

  8. What a cute Elmo outfit! 🙂

I’ve been talking to God more this past week and saying more prayers, especially for those hurting from 9/11….a lot of reflection has been happening for me.

Sleeping in for me is 8AM or later. Today I actually didn’t get out bed until 10, which is almost unheard of..hah!

  9. Rebecca says:

This weekend I’ve slept past 8 for the first time in a while. I’ve also been up super-late. Heh.

I so wanted to be home this weekend because there was a service between nine of the churches in my hometown. Instead I think I’m maybe going to a flag-raising thing and a worship service… Not sure yet.

Sleeping in for me is until about 9. Love when my body lets me do that!

  11. I wake up pretty early most days so sleeping in for me is usually after 9:00am. I’m saying a prayer tonight for all those and the families of those who are affected by 9/11.

  12. I have definitely drove all the way to a workout and turned around. Sometimes you really just need the break.

  13. Lauren says:

Oh my gosh, that picture of Mackenzie is too cute!!!! I skipped my workout today too. Sunday’s are my recovery days but I usually do some kind of active recovery workout. I was so sore that I knew a complete day of REST was needed.
Glad you had a great Sunday.

  14. I wish sleeping in for me was 730! I’m such a night owl. Sleeping in = past 11. haha

  15. Look at how excited M is to see elmo- SO cute!!!

Sleeping in for me is 9 AM. I know that will change soon, lol.

  16. I agree with you – unplanned rest days can sometimes be MUCH more beneficial than the planned worked itself. Glad you got to enjoy your day off today 🙂

  17. I hope M had a great time!!! I just love that picture of her with the Elmo slippers. How adorable!

Sleeping in for me usually is about 8-9am, but every once in a while we’ll get up at 7, read in bed for a while and then go back to sleep for another hour.

  18. OMG that last pic of M is amazing…I just ran in to show my mom how cute she was looking!!! me and sleep have a wierd relatioship../I can be SUCH a morning person when I need to be but I also love sleeping in! it depends on what time I hit the hay at night! i can sleep until 9 if I go to bed late enough 🙂 I can also be up at 430 am hehe

  19. I get super excited if I get to sleep in unti 6 or 7! That’s some good stuff. I will spend extra time in prayer today for all of those affected by 9/11 and all of America!

  20. Great job listening to your body!! I’m sure you strengthened it by resting today!
Sleeping in?? hmm…what is that again?? 😉

  21. Amy Lauren says:

I slept in until 8:30 this morning which is the longest I’ve slept in quite some time! Usually I get up at 6:45 or so to get ready for work. Next weekend I have to get up even earlier to get ready for a race and drive to it, eek!

Glad you guys’ church did something to remember 9-11. That’s pretty awesome :). Hope Mackenzie has fun at the Elmo show!

  22. Khushboo says:

Wow well done for listening to your body and going home- I still somewhat struggle with skipping ‘planned workouts’! I love when you post pics of your kids- too cute!

  23. I slept in this morning, and ended up missing church. I don’t go every week, but had really wanted to be there for the remembrance service.

  24. I love how you describe your daughter 🙂 i bet she’s talkative and active…it makes me want to have my own daughter, too 🙂

i saw on cable a service which commemorated 9/11 and they sang amazing grace and for some reason, i was so touched by that song i nearly cried. it’s good that americans still remember 9/11 so you won’t be complacent with terrorism.

  25. I slept in until 6:45am yesterday and it was glorious. I never get the chance to do that, so staying with the in-laws who are earlier risers and willing to take care of my stepson for me is always great!
