Slow On The Uptake & Spousal Annoyances

Posted: September 24, 2011 at 9:38 am

:Ohhhhh…..the alarm beeped at me way too early this morning. I did not want to peel myself out of bed when it went off. 5:20 am on a Saturday morning, I don’t care for you very much after a later than normal night.

I wish I could say I stayed up late for good reason. Well, I did partly. Chelsey and I I had some awesome chat time last night that I had to peel myself away from…but that can’t be why I’m so tired. I could not fall asleep again. It seems at least once a week I get a random bout of insomnia…but Peter doesn’t really help matters.

I love my husband. I really, really do. But I secretly desire to knee him in the shins most nights because he can fall asleep so easily. His head hits the pillow and he is out like a light…and snoring. Well, snoring isn’t really it. It’s more this weird wheezy, loud breathing with a click. Like I said, I love my husband. I really, really do. But why does he have to fall asleep so dang fast to keep me from escaping “the nose click” at night?!

I need some of these…

IMGP1566-1

Oh, wait. Those are mine. Even they don’t work.

Whew, that felt good. And to be fair, I know I have my annoying things I do too. Which is why I brought my pre-run English muffin with peanut butter and jelly back up into the bed with me. It felt like a little victory when he groaned at me “do you have to eat so loud??”. Although of course he just rolled over and fell right back asleep. Click. Wheeze. Click. Sarcastic smile

Ah, marital bliss. All about communication, respect, giving each other time and support, and annoying the heck out of each other. What? I know you have your “things” in your relationships too. Don’t try to hide it from me.

Run time!

IMGP1565-1

Obviously if I’m waking up and eating at 5-*^%$@#-30 in the morning, it means I have a long run for the day. Last week I had a recovery week, so this week I jump back up to my previous mileage of ten miles.

The run started off slow. I looked at my watch thinking I had at least close to two miles under my belt and saw .8 miles. Ouch. I thought I had a long road ahead of me, but then got in the zone quickly after that. I felt good and was keeping a steady pace around 9:15 minute miles.

Before I knew it, I hit the 5 mile mark to turn around and head back. I planned to take some fuel around the seven mile mark and when I thought it was getting close I glanced down and saw around 6.5 miles. Went a little longer…checked again and still 6ish miles. Oh, man. Things were dragging again!

Then, I ran a decent amount longer and thought my mileage really should have added up by that point. Checked again…

IMGP1564-1

Doh! I had forgotten to restart my Garmin after stopping to cross a street. It took me three times to figure it out though. Slow on the uptake, much? That would be me! At least I knew my mileage since it was out and back. I don’t know my final time or pace, but that doesn’t matter. My goal for long runs has much less to do with pace and more to do with surviving and ending feeling strong. Which, I did! Success!

I just finished devouring some breakfast – a cozy bowl of oats after a chilly run – and now I must head to the ice bath and foam roller. And let me just say, an ice bath sounds incredibly cruel right now. How am I going to do it in the winter?! Gah!

  • What is a small annoyance your significant other, roommate, or a close friend does that gets under your skin?
  • Do you ever have “slow on the uptake” moments? What was your last one?

Ohman. Few things are more annoying than a significant other who falls asleep before you, then proceeds to keep you awake snoring. It gives you a chance to just lay there and ruminate over how irritating it is! My mom spent $150 on custom-made earplugs that drown out all noise. She said it saved her relationship with my step-dad. Best $150 she ever spent.

  2. Khushboo says:

Great run- love your attitude about not running for time. I HATE when i can hear others eating: the sound of food swishing around icks me out. Even seeing others brush their teeth makes me wanna barf!

  3. Tony doesn’t have any annoying habits which is kind of annoying! I crunch cereal and I’m a stacker with papers…I feel that I’m the more annoying one for sure!

    Enjoy your day Tina!

  4. Feeling strong at the finish is definitely worth more than knowing time & pace 🙂

I love being in the kitchen, but not when my roommate’s dishes are piling up in the sink!

  5. Hahaha I loved when you were talking about how your husband falls asleep so quickly and then makes his sounds which makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Sounds exactly like my husband and me! I get so frustrated that he can just plop on his pillow and he’s out, and I’m a different story.
It also drives me crazy when he pushes the comforter ALL over to my side. He gets hot quickly, so he hates any extra blankets. Then I end up all tangled up in our blankets!

  6. I did the SAME thing yesterday on my 4 mile tempo run. I knew I should be hitting the 1 mile point (time to speed things up) by the scenery and I kept looking down to see .89 on it. Happened 3 times before I realized when I wiped the rain drops off it I must’ve stopped the timer. Oops! At least we got a little extra mileage in, right?
And the whole husband sleep thing…we hardly ever go to sleep at the same time so I can avoid that. I need to be asleep for at least 30 minutes before he comes to bed otherwise I’m up and it takes me forever to fall asleep with his tossing/turning/noises.

  7. lol I was having the same thoughts last night- Brian always falls asleep immediately (not fair!) and last night it was accompanied with the clicking noise. What IS that? hahaha.

  8. Erica says:

Great job on the run (despite the garmin issue ;)). Have you ever tried melatonin? What does j do that annoys me? He will have like an hour to get ready before we HAVE to leave…somehow he waits until the last 2 minutes and we end up late!!

  9. Snoring..gah! Travis snores AND falls asleep super fast too. Maybe it’s a guy thing??? It takes me like 30 minutes to finally fall asleep..and that’s on a good night!

  10. Lady, you are a saint for being able to sleep at all through a snore and/or wheeze. That is perhaps one of the most annoying things in the world to me when I sleep! Therefore, you are a saint 🙂

  11. Kellie says:

Random question. I have the same Garmin and I cant get it to charge today. I tried on the computer and plugged into the wall. Did anyone else have this problem or know what to do? I feel naked without it on my runs.

    • Tina says:

I haven’t ever had a problem. Mine is relatively new though. Hopefully someone else can help out!

      • Cindy says:

Try a soft reset on your Garmin. For mine it is pressing the lap + mode button together for a few seconds. If that doesn’t work, you can try a hard reset, mode + power, but it will erase all your data.

  12. Whenever I am around close friends for a long time, little things they do always seem to annoy me haha 🙂

  13. I did the exact same thing with my garmin on my long run last week. I slowed to a walk to eat some Chomps and then when I psyched myself up to run again I pressed the button as if I had stopped it before! At least it was only .4 miles though.

  14. Rebecca says:

LOL, my dad snores and bugs me mom so much. But he also has undiagnosed sleep apnea, so he stops breathing in his sleep and my mom has to shove him or hit him to get him to start up again. Kind of scary.
He also falls asleep pretty quickly, and my mom has trouble sleeping. (So do my grandma and I.)

  15. My husband falls asleep fast and snores, but I actually DO kick or punch him. Doesn’t really phase him though. But we’re even because he tells me that I make a clicking sound with my throat! 😉 It’s really difficult to fall asleep when your husband and dog both snore!

  16. Lee says:

I am like Peter in that I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. I don’t snore though.

Jason has this awful habit of changing his clothes in the living room and leaving his dirty clothes on the couch. Drives me INSANE!!

  17. Sana says:

I don’t understand why men can just “pass-out” and sleep whenever I skype the boy, he is always like “in case I pass-out good night” what does that even mean??” I can stay up and chat all night long!

  18. My husband can also fall asleep within seconds! It’s incredible. Must be a guys thing? Thankfully he doesn’t make any weird sounds.
The most anoying thing about him is that he is a total night owl and hardly ever goes to bad before midnight. As my alarm goes off at 5:30, I usually have to go to bed alone during the week. 🙁

  19. Forgetting to reset the Garmin is the worst! I’ve done it wayyyy too many times! 😛

  20. I’m the one that falls asleep immediately in our relationship, and the hubby is not happy about it. Luckily I don’t snore!
I’ve been reading about all the ladies doing ice baths, and I’m not sure that I could handle it. I always thought people were joking about them!

  21. Lisa says:

Michael snores too! And he falls asleep IMMEDIATELY. I lay there for a long time overthinking everything and tossing and turning. UGH.

My secret: I wear the same earplugs I wear when I’m swimming. Nothing gets through those babies. It works. 🙂

  22. Jon falls asleep before me and snores, too! He also somehow manages to completely pass out whenever we’re stressed or worried. At times like that, I just lie awake and get madder and madder about the fact that he can just sleep and I can’t.

I’m sure I have my annoying habits, too, though. 😉

  23. I enjoyed our chat too! And I won’t lie, I went to sleep right after you.. and it was only 9 here. But don’t worry – I wokr up at 4 AM because I was STARVING!! I told you it would happen!!!

John can fall asleep within like 2 seconds too. It’s so upsetting to me who has to read for alike a half hour before I can fall asleep!

  24. Katie says:

Errr I’m not sure about the 205 but the 305 has a setting on it where it automatically pauses any time you stop (i.e. at crossings, to get flies out of your eyes, retie laces etc etc). That might help? I’ve always had mine on that setting after a similar incident!

    • Cindy says:

I do that with mine…you can set it to “auto pause” (I think it is somewhere in the settings. You can choose to autopause when stopped, or when running a certain pace (like 30 min/mile, basically stopped).

  25. I hate to complain about my husband because he is truly awesome, but it drives me crazy when he leaves drawers half open. He asks: What are those bruises on your legs? Me: From running into the half open drawers! Still, he does it.

    • Sara says:

YES! Or not shutting the bathroom door all the way. Why leave it almost shut? Just shut it! Plus it keeps the cats out of the trash and toilet paper.

  27. I’m guilty of being the spouse that can fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, and then apparently I make the clicking sounds with my throat. My husband makes the clicking sound too, but I usually don’t notice until the morning when I can’t sleep any longer. I found if I give him a tap, he’ll move and the noise magically stops. Definitely try it…

  28. My husband snores too, but I find Breathe Right strips help a lot! He also gets heartburn really bad (he has acid reflux) but he does dumb stuff that helps bring it on–like not take his pill in the morning like the box says (he takes it at night) and eating food after dinner. DUH. So frustrating! Also, he has dishes duty and he doesn’t feel the need to wash them unless they are smelly and the sink is completely full. Irks my nerves, but if I do it, then I’ll be doing everything and that’s not fair or teaching him anything, right??? I love my husband dearly though 🙂 But it is really difficult to live with a man — am I right?? Now I know why my mother was always fussing and often in a bad mood. Totally get it now. And I know why she wanted things done when she asked me to do them. Not later–NOW! Perfect sense.

  29. I do that with my Garmin all the time! It is so frustrating to look down and realize it’s been paused for a mile! I’m actually kind of happy to see I’m not the only person who does it!!
