Veggies Just Don’t Cut It

Posted: September 25, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Let’s try not to focus on the fact that yet another weekend has reached the end of its legs and another busy, hectic week looks us in the face. Easier said than done, I know. At least I had another chill day today to refresh myself before the mile-long lists of to-dos reappeared.

This morning, I set my alarm for 6;30 am – a slight punch to the stomach for a Sunday morning. Sunday mornings are the only morning of the week which I can sleep-in, so I will stay in bed typically until 7:00 or later. The thing is, though, I usually still wake up around 6:30 am naturally, but lay around for the rest of the time. Today, I set the alarm with the mindset that if I wanted to stay in bed, I could…or if I felt rested enough, I could go ahead and get my workout done for the day.

I almost lazily hung about, but then I looked to the future and the thoughts of an afternoon with nothing on the agenda appealed far greater than an extra 30 minutes under the covers. The workout won! Cathe intervals – check! Sweaty mess – check!

Good thing I pretty up nicely.

I don’t think my church friends would have appreciated the nasty.

As every Sunday morning, we spent a large portion of our day at church with our Sunday study group and then worship service. The message from our study group’s discussion really struck me. It was just the message I needed to hear this morning and reaffirmed quite a few things for me. I love when that happens! I may have to share it later this week, since it’s a general topic we all question from time to time. Smile

Once 12 o’clock rolled around, we made our way home for the afternoon. Finally, by 1 o’clock, the kids were fed and down for their naps and I could sit down to lunch with Peter.

I think that is the hardest thing about Sundays. I eat breakfast around 8 am and can never eat lunch until one. I want to inhale my kitchen every week after church! Instead, I make the quickest and most satisfying thing I can think to make – and it almost never includes veggies. Take today’s lunch for example -

Another grilled hummus, tomato, and cheese sandwich. An apple. An Oikos honey Greek yogurt. Not a single green in sight. It’s like this every week. I guess veggies just don’t cut my hunger and cravings when the hunger beast comes out in full force. Interesting since I know a load of veggies will fill me up real well. I don’t question my belly, I just feed it what it wants. Cravings = good. Or at least they make it easier to decide what’s for lunch. If only they could clue me in to what’s for dinner tonight too.

  • What types of foods do you turn to when you reach the point of HANGRY?
  • Would you rather get more sleep or get your workout out of the way?

You look beautiful in that dress! 🙂
When I reach the point of HANGRY I usually make what you make.. a sanwich, apple and yogurt 🙂

  2. Sundays are crazy for us too, especially because we lead worship and have to be at church early. I usually eat breakfast around 6:30 on Sundays, and we get home around 11:30. I’ve started taking a snack for everyone. I usually eat mine clandestinely during Sunday School, then make sure Hubs & the 4YO have a snack once we get in the car. Otherwise, it is mass chaos with a child demanding food as soon as we get home. A small something to hold everyone over.

    • LG says:

I do this too! Have b-fast before church, then bring some nuts, a few mini chocolates or a piece of fruit when we’re in the car on the way home. It prevents me from devouring everything in site. :0)

  3. I know what you mean by starving! My church is at 11:30 and it is 3 hours long! So by 2:30 I am ready to gnaw my arm off. Sunday’s are hard for me eating wise, but it is my rest day because I typically stay home the entire day to spend time with family and focus on spirituality, besides going to church. I’m trying to bring snacks with me that I can munch on so that I don’t go too crazy when I get home!

  4. Veggies sooo don’t cut it for me either when the hunger beast comes out. Carbs are what I need!

Way to get your workout in first thing in the AM!

  5. When I’m HANGRY, I love to eat a giant bowl of cereal. It’s so comforting to eat out of a bowl and it calms my cravings until I’m ready to eat something more substantial. 5 hours between meals is just too long!

    • Tina says:

I always crave cereal too, but it NEVER fills me up when I’m hungry. I do have it as a snack quite frequently though. 🙂

  6. If I can get myself to it, peanut butter is the first (and best, IMO) thing I grab when I tip the scale past hungry to hangry. A couple spoonfuls bring me back to reality, and then I can figure out what I’m REALLY going to eat! 😉

  7. Love the dress! Veggies do not cut it when I am extra hangry 🙂

  8. I usually reach for carbs when I get to that point. That’s not a bad lunch for being starving though, you still got some good fruit, protein and carbs in there, veggies can always be made up later 😉
When it comes to waking up, the bed always wins. Getting out of bed in the morning is probably the hardest part of the day for me!

  9. I’m with you! The last thing that would go to to satisfy my hunger would be a veggie. Might be why I have the issues that I do… Hmmm. Proverbial “food” for thought.

  10. Whenever I’m really ‘hangry’, I either raid the fridge or freezer for leftovers, or I make myself a sandwich, just like you.
I’d choose sleep, always. I can’t workout before 8 am anyway, and sleep is precious these days. 😉

  11. Kiah says:

I’m the same way after church! We can be there for up to three hours, and by the time we are driving home, I am begging my husband to stop at any and every food place. Today I brought a book on tape for the car ride home, just to distract myself from my hunger til I got back to my kitchen 🙂
P.S. LOVE your dress! It’s too cute.

  12. Pretty pretty dress!!
When I’m HANGRY, I reach for CARBS!! And cheese..and butter….and…

  13. Diana says:

Adorable dress! The elusive perfect-for-church dress I am always seeking…

I hope you share your study group discussion – I just moved & haven’t joined a new fellowship group so I’ll just pretend I’m in yours for the meantime 🙂

When I’m hangry, a spoonful…er, entire container…of pb always does the trick!

  14. You look so pretty! And I do hope you share the message from your study group discussion! When I’m really hungry, I generally go for complex carbs of some sort because they generally satisfy me the quickest haha.

  15. Therese says:

Please do share what you heard at church today. I love it when the message re-affirms something we’ve been struggling with personally.

  16. I know how you feel thinking you could eat the entire kitchen when church is over with. I usually eat my breakfast around 7, and don’t get lunch til about 1 or 1:30, so I’m starvin’ by the time lunch rolls around. I usually try to pack an apple or peach to snack on mid morning, but I often space it like I did this morning! Usually when I’m super hungry, I run to whole wheat carbs first. I find they satisfy me the most and fill me up quickly.

  17. Aw you DO pretty up nice – love that little dress – so cute!

Please share the message – i’d love to hear it!

And OMG when i’m hangry give me some mac & cheese with a side of pizza and a dessert of sour patch kids. LOL scary! My hangry persona is a 4-year-old. haha

  18. That lunch looks perfect to me!

When hunger strikes – I usually grab some peanut/nut butter and/or cereal/oatmeal. Yeah, veggies just don’t cut it sometimes!

  19. I never really eat veggies for lunch…oops 🙂 Love the dress!

  20. I would rather get my workout out of the way!!! And when I am hangry (lol) carbs don’t stand a chance!!! 🙂

  21. peacebeme says:

If I’m THAT hungry, I ALWAYS go for a peanut butter sandwich! My favorite, so easy, and it “sticks to the ribs”! 😉

  22. You look very nice, Tina!!

I rarely eat veggies when my main goal is to inhale my food either. I think it’s because of their prep time!

  23. I agree with what others said carbs that are quick and easy. I like PB&J.
I am also up around 630 on the weekends too. I like to get my workouts done. Although yesterday, I enjoyed a lazy morning with my bf and did not work out until later. But this morning, I got up and got my long run in first thing. There are advantages to both.

  24. I know that logically I want to just get my workout out of the way on those early mornings…but it’s just SO easy to forget that and sleep a little more 🙂

  25. that looks like the same lunch I had last week! I love the dress – super pretty!

  26. Khushboo says:

You do pretty up nicely indeed :)! I rather get my workout on than an extra 30 mins in bed…MOST of the time! Although I always plan my rest days to fall on a Sunday- something mentally which makes it so hard/unappealing for me to get active on a Sunday!

    • Tina says:

I used to always do that but with long runs, I need to take my rest day the day before. It’s not as bad as I thought it would be, but still an adjustment.

  27. JJ says:

Veggies don’t call my name when I’m hungry either….super satisfying and yummy when I don’t come to the table starved, but once the tummy is rumbling they just won’t do! Just like another commenter said…only carbs by that point.

Why is that? Do you think it means we need to fuel our bodies sooner so we don’t get to that point of craving?

You look great in the dress and it sounds like the day was a good one 🙂

    • Tina says:

I’m reading the nutrition part of my personal training book now and it mentioned that bec carbs are our main energy source they are often what we will crave the most and easiest when hungry. 🙂

  28. Becky says:

When I am hungry I reach for cheese. Even if I try other things, I end up back in the kitchen for cheese. And I have been out of all cheese for about 4 days now…

Far too often dinner does not include veggies, but most of the time I am pretty good about it. Lunch always includes them – in soup or salad form, and breakfast only when I am making eggs.

  29. VanessaG says:

You look so pretty!! I too am starving after church. It takes a lot of willpower when I work the 2-3at church to not devour their animal crackers, hah. I always reach for peanut butter when I reach my hangry!! 🙂

    IN LOVE with your outfit.
