if you give a…

Posted: September 7, 2010 at 3:54 pm

If you give a mom a busy long-weekend, she’s going to ask you for a nap.

She’ll lie down only to be awakened within 15 minutes from her little girl waking up early.

Once out of bed, she will decide to be productive and finish some laundry.

While hanging laundry in the closet, her little girl will suddenly get very quiet. Too quiet.

IMGP6768

She’ll sigh, then laugh, then clean everything up, and end up wanting lunch. She will want her favorite fallback meal for lunch.

IMGP6752

“Fallback” will make her think of fall and all the wonderful activities she looks forward to – pumpkin patches, some trail hikes, cooler weather, and…candy corn.

She will remember she bought a bag of candy corn pumpkins at the store to munch on here and there. She will have a handful.

IMGP6759

She will eat her candy corn as she straightens up the kitchen. The massage awaiting her on Saturday will catch her eye on the calendar…then the dentist appointment three days later.

She will begin to wonder if they will be able to put her to sleep during her appointment. She thinks not. Sleep. Once again she will remember she needs a nap.

While thinking about her need to sleep, she will notice the irony of the diet coke she had with lunch. And she will refuse to laugh at the cruel joke that caffeine is (generally) not allowed during one of the most exhausting life experiences (pregnancy).

IMGP6756

After lunch, her daughter will ask her to read books.

IMGP6764

She won’t be able to say “no” so she will read the same 3 books over and over again. They will motivate her blogging for the afternoon.

The repetitive nature of the books will make her sleepy. And chance are if you give a mom a busy day and make her tired, she’s going to ask you for a nap….just in time for her sister’s arrival for sister night.

  • What’s the strangest place you’ve found blogging inspiration? I think my post today explains itself on this one! LOL
  • Is there a holiday candy you can’t refuse? Candy corn anything for me all the way. It will be a regular treat a handful here or there regularly until after Halloween…or whenever it goes away.

  1. Awww, I used to LOVE If You Give a Mouse a Cookie!!! Too cute.

And pumpkin candy corn– YESSSS!!!! 🙂

  2. Mark says:

I’d never even heard of candy corn and had to fire up Wikipedia 🙂

Truth be told, I don’t have a sweet tooth and as a result, I rarely eat sweet things. My sugar tolerance is quite low and I start to feel unwell pretty quickly. It’s probably a blessing in disguise 🙂

    • Tina says:

I wish I had that problem! LOL

I love sweet things. I used to be able to eat soooo much of them and not feel it. Now I tend to be satisfied with less (thank goodness, before it starts seeming like too much sugar. I still love them though. 😀

  3. Oh sister, you can’t show a fellow pregnant woman candy corn pumpkins without her going crazy……somehow (don’t ask) I have some candy corn left from last Halloween and I just ate three packets.

    • Tina says:

I would not have leftover candy corn. I’m lucky if I get through a month without eating all my leftovers! GAH…you’re still pregnant? 🙁 Come out baby!!!!

  4. I heart candy corn pumpkins!!!! I can’t wait to buy them!

    • Tina says:

As soon as I saw them I didn’t even debate about putting them in my cart. LOL Now I have to be sure I ration them appropriately. 😉

  5. Cute, cute, cute 🙂

I love that book! And I love my Grandma’s Christmas caramels that she makes from scratch. They go great with coffee! OOps— didn’t mean to mention any caffeinated drink in front of you 😉

  6. AWE WHAT A LITTLE MUNCHKIN!!! hahaha she’s already excited of the possibilities that await.. although i know for sure that she wont be needing make up in the future, much to naturally beautiful <3

  7. Hahah I love it! I love these posts the most – really shows us the true you. 🙂

  8. sooooo cute! i love those books 🙂 i really can’t NOT eat holiday fudge…i can skip any other candy, but that gets me every time!

  9. I think my brother and I wore out the books “If you give a moose a muffin” and “if you give a mouse a cookie”. Loved them!

I cannot turn down Easter candy- those milk chocolate eggs (I think they’re cadburry?) and robin eggs (that are the malted milk balls on the inside)- they CALL to me. For real…

  10. Camille says:

Is there is a holiday food that I can refuse!?
Throw some chocolate in it and I’m sold 🙂

  11. Meg says:

This is so cute! I have those days where all you want to do is take a nap but instead end up laying there thinking of everything I have to do until I just get up and do it all!

    • Tina says:

That’s what normally happens to me too so I don’t nap. I was soooo exhausted today though. So I tried and failed. Oh well.

  12. Awwe that’s the cutest inspiration ever! I actually liked this post- it’s nice to hear something other than “I” 😛 Great way to keep it fresh!

I don’t have a holiday candy I can’t get enough of..but I have a holiday food I could gorge myself on and never get sick of it- pumpkin pie. (totally just spelled pimpkin.) Can’t wait to cook some up this year!

  13. I really enjoyed this post. You are such an awesome woman. I get blogging ideas randomly here and there, especially while running. I sometimes even think of things in the middle of the night or during meetings at work (see, meetings can be productive).

  14. homecookedem says:

Cute, cute post!! You know as a first grade teacher I loved this so much!! 🙂 Ok, but now you have me CRAVING those little pumpkins!! I see a trip to Walgreens on my way home in my very near future! 😉

  15. I LOVE candy corn pumpkins! And regular candy corn.

I love the look on M’s face. Busted!

    • Tina says:

She sure was. But it was too cute I just smiled at her and asked what she was doing. She said “pretty arms mommy”…”green!”. She had spread green eyeshadow all over her arms. LOL At least it cleans easy!

  16. I used to LOVE the pumpkin candy corn. Darn contamination…I want them! Sounds like you had a busy day and need some rest. I hope you get some tonight!

  17. I stock candy corn year-round! My favorite is the pumpkin type, but I got the mixed-bag on sale and have already eaten all the pumpkins out of it. I also love Christmas cookies!

  18. I like the Indian corn (with chocolate on bottom). The pumpkins are also yummy. But I’m with Mary on the pumpkin pie … or pumpkin cheesecake … or … well, pretty much anything with pumpkin in it.

    • Tina says:

Pumpkin in any sort of baked good is a serious weakness of mine as well. I sometimes wonder if fall is my favorite season bec its pumpkin season. 😀

  19. Super cute post – I bought these books for my little cousins and I secretly love them too.

The holiday candy that I cannot refuse are those little orange slices that my mom buys every Christmas. They are available year round, but we only had them at Christmas. Though usually I am partial to the real orange…

  20. Good question about the holiday candy! Halloween candy doesn’t really appeal to me anymore… do Christmas cookies count? 🙂
    Cute post!

  21. Sava says:

Aww this post was so CUTE!
I loved those books as a little girl.

    The holiday I can’t resist:
    Halloween.
    I LOVE to dress up 🙂 🙂
I don’t even care about the candy!
Pumpkin-flavored things are where it’s at!

  22. Nicole, RD says:

I get a lot of blogging inspiration from work, but I guess that’s not all too surprising 🙂

    And for me…PEEPS! I can’t refuse peeps!

  23. Penny Lane says:

You know there is not one holiday candy I can refuse. Though generally if you offer me peanut butter and chocolate I am a goner.
I will be posting on DSLR today. Just gotta finish it:)

I love if you give a _____a_____ books. For a co-worker I made a whole poster board to use with the kids, they loved it because it was so interactive. I Like the mom version too, you should market it and you can read it before you take a nap;)

  24. Jess says:

love, love, looooove “If you give a mouse a cookie” – I tried to find it for my sister’s baby shower but the book store didn’t have it in stock, the nerve! 😉 Great post – so cute and thoughtful too 🙂 As for me? I canNOT turn down a piece of chocolate, it’s my kryptonite, swear to god!

  25. Wifey says:

What a cute post! I’m a candy corn gal. LOVE them. This is my first time here, looking forward to reading more.

    Winks & Smiles,
    Wifey

  26. Kat says:

I love candy corn pumpkins!! Or just candy corn in general haha

  27. Lori Lynn says:

I teach Elementary Sped– and as I was reading the beginning of the post, I was thinking your blog was sounding familiar. I love those books! I love the pumpkins. They’re hard for me to resist, and I have to limit myself!

  28. Lisa Jordan says:

You know I love candy corn, candy pumpkins, or anything candy! This is a great post! Such a cute picture of Miss M! She wanted to try to be as pretty as her Mommy. Miss M and her Mommy are both beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Lisa Jordan says:

P.S. I forgot to mention, I have a bag of candy corn right now! Yummy!!!

  30. ashleigh says:

This is such a cute post Tina 🙂

I am with you on the candy corn! Delicious!

  31. hehe I always thought that was super unfortunate! (no caffeine during pregnancy!) Great post – loved the pics of your day!

    I can’t resist candy canes!

  32. Katie H. says:

LOL I love this post. Your daughter looks so innocent messing with your makeup (you probably didn’t think so)!

I love the “If you give a” series- they are my nephew’s faves!

  33. Lindsay says:

I used to love the Candy Corn Pumpkins at Halloween. I havent seen them in years and I am not sure if there are available in my area. I will have to look out for them soon!! If i cant find them, I will send you cookies in hopes of getting Candy Corn Pumpkins. 🙂

  34. Ameena says:

Cute post! Maya loves these books…I’ve read about giving a moose a muffin more times than I can recall. 🙂 We still love it!

  35. i used to love that book as a kid! can’t believe them came out with a series since then….man do i feel old!

i’m not really a candy person, but it always tastes better when someone gives it to you. (isn’t that funny?) like candy canes, i never buy them, but if someone gives me one i’m in total heaven 🙂

  36. Love those kids books! Read them when I was little and revisited them when I took Children’s Lit.

I can never turn down a chocolate bunny on Easter morning before church. Dark chocolate preferred.

  37. I think it’s safe to say that the “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” series is a classic! Adorable stories! But they always make me hungry…Especially “If You Give a Moose a Muffin.” 🙂

Oooh candy corn (and pumpkins)! I have a love-hate relationship with it: The first handful is delightful, the second just okay, and the third, a bit too sweet! It’s quite addicting though! And such a “fall” candy! I think my favorite seasonal candy is Peeps!

  38. omg so sorry about the repeat-loop on the same books. skylar has like 200 books but sometimes we get in ruts and read the same 2. like 200 times each, the same day. LOL

caffeine, yeah, rules are meant to be broken. 🙂

    • Tina says:

Oh I break the caffeine rule! But for some reason the last time I got them I thought “oh I don’t need the caffeine so I’ll get the caf free ones”. I’ve learned…always choose caffeine as a mom! LOL Now I’ll have these on hand for a couple months and I realized we’re out of coffee too since I haven’t been wanting it in the summer. I was a bit frustrated

  39. My weakness is salmiakki which is a really salty liquorice candy produced here in Finland, I can’t give it up no matter what 😀 I’m also an addict for Xmas chocolates!

  40. I love candy corn and those little pumpkins too. During Halloween I must have mini butterfingers and baby ruths! YUM!
And during Christmas I must have fudge and peppermint bark!

  41. Bree says:

AHHH candy corn pumpkins! Those are my absolute favorites. I can eat super sweet things like that all day. I am a corner piece of cake kind of gal 🙂

  42. Those pumpkins make me long for fall and all that comes with it. 🙂

  43. Take a nap already, sleepy prego! 😉
I’m right there with ya on the candy corn and those wonderfully sugary, super cute little pumpkins! Isn’t it awesome how much more you enjoy them when you make they’re special once-in-awhile treats rather than stuffing your face with half the bag? Ah, the simple joys. 🙂

  44. LindseyAnn says:

Candy Corn Pumpkins!!! 😀 By far my favorite “fall/halloween” candy! I just wish they sold them in smaller bags, because once that big bag is in the house, it is game over.

    • Tina says:

I’m rationing mine since I know I will have to have them. I’ll even get out little ziploc baggies or tupperwares and count out evenly into more appropriate servings for a day. Then once the little bag is gone it’s easier not to go back for more. Otherwise it’s 1 here, 2 there, a handful there,..oops! LOL

  45. Holly says:

Loved this post – I love those books! 🙂

  46. We are all about dinosaur books in my house. 🙂 I love the PB bars . . . I don’t know what they are called. And also Chic-o-Sticks. DROOL. But I find it hard to turn down ANY candy!!

I hope you get some rest soon. I’m at almost 2 years later w/ Baby Boy and still hoping for a nap. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

    • Tina says:

LOL – Isn’t that how life goes? Always wishing for a nap but never really finding one. I did go to bed pretty early last night and feel much less drained today.

  47. I love me some candy corn pumpkins. They are so much better than candy corn, more sugar I guess?

I love “If you give a mouse a cookie” and “If you give a moose a muffin” books. Such a cute post!

  48. […] pregnant. BBQ sandwiches, Mexican food, pizza, hearty casseroles. Sweets sound good too – cake, candy corn, icecream, and cookies. Even McDonalds manages to squeeze its way in as an undeniable craving […]
