Hello all! I hope this Tuesday finds you well. I slept in until M woke up again this morning and feel great now. Still a tiny bit of a sore throat, but that is it. I tried to rest as much as possible yesterday to ensure I would feel good enough for spin today. I missed the gym! It felt amazing to get my spin on. I’m ready for the new music to come out, but that won’t be for another two weeks at our gym. 🙁

Have you all ever heard of something and immediately thought “that sounds like a blogger thing”? Last night, on the way home from tutoring, I heard an advertisement on the radio for Trader Joes seaweed snacks and immediately thought blogger. I could so see these becoming a big hit amongst the blog world, as they sound similar to kale chips but in seaweed form. Who knows? Maybe they already are a hit and I’m just out of the loop.

Do you ever notice sometimes how something becomes popular among blogs and then so many give it a try? I know I have fallen into that trap. Although its not really a trap. Many times things come out GREAT and I am forever thankful for finding out about it through blogs. Dinner last night shows a prime example. We had Gina’s Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili and I loved it!

I also have blogs to thank for my affection for green monsters, kale chips, meatless sloppy joes, various dessert treats I have made, parsnip fries, new squash varieties, yogurt in oats, and more. Also for not making me feel crazy for hating on cottage cheese and loving Greek yogurt. I have tried some things that do not agree with me though – quinoa or Amazing Grass products for example, both of whose textures greatly bothered me.

Now, I really hesitate to jump on the bandwagon and try things out. I question if it honestly sounds appealing to me before giving it a shot. I know I will never try things like maca powder, tempeh, or chia seeds because I am such a huge texture eater and the texture of all of those makes me gag a little to even think about. I also refuse to try things that aren’t easily accessible or too expensive for a sampling.

Plus, I know my taste buds can have a mind of their own, as demonstrated in this morning’s breakfast. The TJs commercial last night got me thinking about how I miss shopping there more. Then, I remembered some apple chicken sausages I had in the freezer. Not TJs variety but a similar sub in found in the “healthy” section of a local grocer. Publix I think? I knew I needed to incorporate them into breakfast.

When I woke up, the wheels started turning. A sweet diner breakfast! An apple “crepe” with an apple sausage! This is when my taste buds started getting a little nutty. First, I microwave “baked” an apple with cinnamon, while cooking up my “crepe”. For the record, that would be one egg lightly beaten and cooked in a skillet like a flat omelet. Nothing really “crepe”-y about it.

I wanted a nutbutter in the crepe with my “baked” apples. My taste buds wanted Nutella more specifically. What the heck?  So I spread a bit of Nutella on one half and added some of the apples to the other.

Then, rolled it up and topped it with the remaining apples and cinnamon, served with the apple sausage on the side.

It tasted good to me. Although not quite what it could have been. Something about Nutella and apples just doesn’t fit as nicely as Maple Almond Butter and apples. And I can’t complain that the crepe was too thick and eggy, because hello? It was just an egg! I would still make it again though! I like sweet eggs and anything that’s easy after all.

    I think your breakfast looks delicious! Although I agree that nut butters really work better with apples….I’m a big fan of nutella and banana 🙂

  2. hehe great post! I know what you mean – I remember being like OMG am I the only girl online not having green monsters for breakfast?!

    I tried quinoa and LOVED it – became a huge fan and eat it on the regular now. Same with chicken sausage, greek yogurt, bagel thins, morningstar farms sausage and really broader things like “Indian food.” Honestly, i’ve come along way thanks to you all! However, some things didn’t work out, like egg plant and shirataki (sp) noodles – ugh!

      Oohhhh….shirataki noodles is another I will NEVER try. Something that starts off smelling like fish and apparently feels slimy is by far a no go for me.

    Your breakfast looked good to me. I think I would have just gone with plain old peanut butter. But looked soooo good. I have no idea how this gets me to wanting smitten kitchen’s tomato sauce with onion and butter but I think I need to make that sauce for supper now. Our taste buds work in mysterious ways.   4. I finally made kale chips and really liked them, but not enough to make them weekly. There are many things I haven’t tried like oats in a jar, because it just seems like a fad in a way. I’ll just take mine in a bowl thank you. I think what I try to do is just find inspiration and have become more creative. I try not to just try it because everyone else is. I don’t have money to waste!

  5. this looks delicious… it has been a long time since I made a sweet egg omelet / crepe…

    There used to be a wasabi seaweed tempura “chip” at Trader Joes… I wonder if that is the same thing you heard about?? I loved those things, and they discontinued them… I HOPE that is them, coming back… they were SO good. 😀

    I’ve seen a few raves about seaweed snacks so it’s funny that you mentioned them! A lot of the new things I try come from other blogs, as well as regular recipes from cooking magazines and websites that I like to clean up to make a bit healthier or boost nutritionally (using ingredients that I’ve learned about on blogs like chia seeds etc). And being more of a ‘jam’ kid (as opposed to PB) growing up, I never would have known about the designer world of PB that exists if it weren’t for blogs!

  7. ok, i’m going to say it – i hate chia seeds. they creep me out. i know they’re good for you but they give me the heebie-jeebies!

  8. The one that I tried and failed with (and really really wanted to like) was the breakfast cookie. A lot of people said it was great for cookie cravings. For me, it just made my cravings for sweet and chocolate that much worse without being fully satisfied! Eh… I gave it a shot I guess.

  9. Glad you are feeling better, Tina! The texture thing cracks me up, cause I LOVE texture! I love tempeh and miss it so, but at first it smells so weird! I want to try chia seeds, but they are so expensive, I am a little apprehensive. I have tried kale chips and loved them, but have really only done them once. I don’t do the smoothie thing, cause I hate drinking my calories. I can’t think of anything I tried and hated, but I am sure there was something. I saw the seaweed chips at the Natural Food Warehouse and almost bought them, but I spent $70 on oats and gluten free flours for Tony and decided I would try them another time.

    I think your breakfast looks yummy 🙂 I keep seeing these egg crepes on blogs, I might have to make one though I prefer savory not sweet eggs. And I think I’m one of the few people who doesn’t like Nutella! I love Peanut Butter Co Cinnamon Raisin peanut butter with apples (but I actually don’t like raisins). There are so many things I’ve learned from blogs like pumpkin love, spinach in my smoothies, TJ peanut flour (which I’m dying to experiment with).

    And isn’t it amazing how a great workout can just pump you up! Unfortunately I’ve never gotten into spin but I might have to try it out again…

    I was really inspired to try quinoa and loved it (sorry you aren’t a fan!) but other things like Barney Butter and Amazing Grass just gross me out. I don’t like the TJ’s Seaweed chips either, I must say. But definitely check out their Plantain Chips – I am addicted!

      I have had their Plantain chips. They are good! I even had a friend lucky enough to get to use those to pump up for fitness competitions. I was jealous my protocol was rice cakes or sweet potato at that time. LOL

  12. I’m with you on Amazing Grass. I wasn’t a fan. But, green monsters, kale chips, and sweet potatoes can all be attributed to the blog-world.

    I totally thank the bloggy world for my OBSESSION with greek yogurt, quinoa (yes, I know, you hate it, that’s ok!) and overnight oats AND savory oats. Where would I be without these yummies??

  17. I tried those Trader Joe’s seaweed snacks/chips just a couple of weeks ago and wasn’t a big fan. I actually really like seaweed but for some reason those snacks just weren’t doing it for me. I credit the blog world for overnight oats and green monster smoothies!

    I made the mistake of trying an Amazing Grass Bar once. It was the worst thing I have ever tasted. Ever.

    I love Green Monsters and spaghetti squash and am a weirdo who loves that slimy taste of chia seeds. You’ll never see me eat Oatmeal, though! haha

    I hate chia!!! I hate it with a passion. I tried to love it. I put it in my oaties, in smoothies, I hid it in sauces…it was terrible! Little gummy balls of non-flavor that got stuck in my teeth. And for that I paid $20.00.
    But…I love oat bran, peanut butter on sweet potatoes and breakfast cookies .

  20. While I acknowledge bloggie trends, I’m not one to jump on any bandwagons. I have never enjoyed any kind of smoothies like the green monsters or others and I think oats taste the same in a bowl lol.
    I DO love trying other bloggers recipes though! It’s so fun to experiment and then share with others! I just LOVE LOVE LOVE cooking and discovering!

    That breakfast looks like a good combination. Delicious! I never would have tried green monsters if it weren’t for the blogging world. And they are awesome! I also just bought some almond butter, which I never would have tried if it weren’t for bloggers. I probably would have stuck with old fashioned peanut butter and I never would have been aware that there were other fancier nut butters out there. Not sure how I feel about the almond butter yet. It’s different, but not bad. May just be an aquired taste.

      Agreed there! I still have my foods I will eat over and over, but I do try more than I used to. And I love that I get so many meat free meal ideas from blogs too.

  24. Oh so many things have inspired me! Muffins that taste like donuts, chia seeds, green monsters, and pumpkin everything. I do think it’s a good thing too – it expands your horizons and gets you to try new things, and I don’t think that’s ever bad. But I always feel weird when I try something that people rave about though and I don’t like it- mainly kale chips. They are okay, but I would never rave about them 🙂

  25. i tried a baked oatmeal.. and it failed miserably! it was too dry. but that’s probably my own fault, ha

  26. Let’s see … I’d never have tried cold oats, soaked overnight in milk, without having seen it on Carrots N Cake. Now it’s one of my breakfast staples. (This morning, I used dark chocolate almond milk — because I want to finish the carton before it goes bad and a few Craisins. When I got up, I added a T of almond butter and a sliced banana.)

    I also have the blog world to thank for my love of Greek yogurt (eaten plain or as a sour cream substitute in various dishes) and tofu Shirataki noodles. I thought I’d hate them — and the texture IS a little off, but the fact that I can eat a whole darn bag of them for, like, 1 Point makes up for that.

  27. While I did have GMs for a while (and would probably still if my blending at work didn’t turn so many heads), I never understood the appeal of two things: almond butter (for the most part, nowhere even close in deliciousness to PB) & Chobani yogurt (Fage is LEAGUES better).

    Greek Yogurt. I try, I really do, but we’re not best buds. Also, Healthy Tipping Point’s sweet potato and baked beans. Yum! Caitlin was right. I really want to try the Oreo truffles you made too, Tina!

  30. When I made my first egg crepe I was somehow convinced that it would not taste like an egg at all even though that was the singular ingredient. 🙂

  31. I normally don’t follow blog trends either – I tend to let them die down and then try them myself. I tried overnight oats recently and thought they minged hard! I am waiting to try oats in a jar though as I have a jar of coconut butter that is almost empty.

    Were it not for blogs, I would never have tried a green monster or thought of spreading my apple with almond butter 😀

      Overnight oats is another one I won’t do. If I want cooler oats I will make them and mix in yogurt. I don’t like the thought of soggy, super cold oats.

    You should try quinoa once again and make it my way! I put step-by-step instructions on the blog and it turns out so fluffy. I have converted quinoa haters into quinoa lovers 🙂

    I think living in Boulder influenced my trying of new foods more than the blog world as a whole! I did, however, try peanut flour due to a few recipes on blogs and it is a keeper!

  33. Blogs have introduced me to so many things I love: overnight oatmeal, parsnips in general, using fruit instead of sugar to sweeten recipes!

    Something I hated was PB in oatmeal and oats in a jar. MEH.

    Can you use something besides the organic veggie broth? I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to find it. Is there a substitution you can use?

      I used free range chicken broth actually since I’m not vegetarian and couldn’t find organic veggie broth either. 🙂

I hear ya – sometimes I roll my eyes if I detect something becoming such a “blogger thing,” BUT on the other hand if a particular recipe (vs. a product I could take or leave) is spreading like wildfire, that probably does mean it’s actually really good. Haven’t tried the Fitnessista chili yet, but did bookmark it because it gets good reviews – yours included! Mostly, though, I go with what sounds good to me and don’t buy things just because they’re trendy blog-wise. The TJ’s seaweed, though–that DOES sound good to me! Will keep my eyes out for it.

  36. I love nutella but can imagine almond butter being much tastier in that. I love apple chicken sausages. I get them from a local butcher and they aren’t as sweet as the grocery store kind – I like them more that way!

      Yea. I saw the Nutella and wanted some but knew it would mix as well with the apples. I had the Nutella anyways because I knew if I didn’t I would have still wanted Nutella and would have have ended up standing around with the spoon and the jar. LOL Not a terrible thing by any means, but I didn’t need another stomach ache at spin this week. 😉

  41. Definitely Kale chips is my blogger food. I’ve never eaten Kale before until I started reading food blogs let alone cook then as chips.

    I love them though but I wonder if we lose most of the nutrients after it has been baked and turned into chips texture?

      I never thought about the losing nutrients part of baking kale chips. I wonder now too. And maybe if I ever make it to TJs again I’ll get a little one of the snack packs for M to try with me. I can handle 99 cents to sample something.

  42. Btw, a friend of mine (who does not read blogs) bought the seaweed chips as snacks for her kids and she was surprised that they love them. I think the kids will like the saltiness and crunchiness of the seaweed chips.

    Mmmm Nutella! I’ve been eating it with banana bread I made this weekend.. amazing!

    The blog world has introduced me to Kale chips which I enjoy a lot. Also various butters like pear, butternut & pumpkin. I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head but I’m sure there’s more!
