list maker

Posted: November 3, 2010 at 11:00 am

I have a weakness for lists. I fill my share of notebooks each year with lists – daily to-do lists, grocery lists, bigger project lists, pros and cons lists, workout plan lists, guest lists, blogging lists. If it can be listed out, you better believe I have it in my hand dandy notebook. Like this guy, only less creepy.

Is Blue’s Clues even still on? I hated having to watch that show with the kids I babysat back in the day. Moving on.

Yesterday, I was the queen of lists. I created a list of things to do before baby B arrives. You know, instead of actually starting to organize. I have to be sure Peter has a honey-do list ready before I go out of town. You know, next weekend.

As you can tell, I love my lists. I do not love when they keep me up at night, however. I woke up quite a few times last night from feeling uncomfortable. I would have trouble falling back asleep thanks to the discomfort…and then my mind would start working out its lists. We all know how that ends.

I’ve been up since before 4 am and now have a list of things to do this weekend when I have the most spare time I have had in weeks. That list is ridiculously funny. I will bow to myself if I can manage to finish it all. I also have a list of pros and cons for blogging conferences. Yes, I’m still thinking about them. Especially after I learned from Caitlin that there likely will not be a HLS 2011. Not definitely not, but likely not. So, I created something like this in my head at about 3:42 am.

FITBLOGGIN BLOGHER
closer location for quicker, easier, and likely cheaper travel later in the year so easier to leave baby Braedon for a few days
specific to health/fitness blogging – my main interest part of their publishing network, but not specific to main interest
know more people attending I would want to meet and/or hear speak chance to meet more new people = more networking, a big part of conferences
would still exclusively be breastfeeding and don’t want to risk milk production further, more expensive location to travel

Let’s just say I’m *thisclose* to registering for FitBloggin right now and still tempted to do BlogHer as well. Heck, my crazy mind got into thinking about pursuing sponsorships and other things by 4:18 am. This is what happens when I can’t sleep.

Along with foregoing Power class in favor of some easy cardio on machines. I haven’t done cardio on machines in at least 6 months. How crazy. I actually like using machines, but only if I’m doing some sort of intervals or a workout to make it more interesting. Just low intensity, steady state on the treadmill, elliptical, or stepmill? Not a huge fan. Since I didn’t think my body could handle Power today and weather conditions did not allow for a walk on the trail, I made due with machines.

IMGP8355

I nabbed a spare magazine and hit up 20 minutes each incline walking on the treadmill and la-di-da-ing on the elliptical. It did the job. Now, to wait out the next 1.5 weeks until I can always go in the afternoon. I did my workout in the afternoon yesterday and loved it! Unfortunately, our previous commitments won’t let me do that every workout for another 1.5 weeks. Bummer.

I will be back later with today’s Q + A and my regular nightly post. Have a great Hump Day! 😀

  • Do you like cardio machines for workouts? Which ones? What types of workouts do you do on them?
  • What types of things keep you up at night?

  1. I like the stepmill and treadmill. Least favorrite is prob the ellpitical. I hate not being able to move my feet!

I say go for it if you feel like goign to Fitblogging! They always look like a blast!

  2. Kelly says:

List makers unite! I love love love to make lists. Anything with a list is better! I am also kind of dorky in the fact that I love colored pens and papers and my lists always look “fun”…yes I am obessed…but I am okay with that!

  3. I love my treadmill.

I love notebooks and lists!! and fun pens to write with! 😀

  4. I’m a list making machine!!

I really like the elliptical as far as gym machines go. And I think you will have an awesome time at whichever conference you decide to go to.

I’m starting to think maybe I could go to FitBloggin!! It’s only an hour from my house!

  5. Girl, if you are the queen of lists then I am the princess! I have them all over the place. I don’t really use them either, it’s like I just need to take the information out of my brain and put it somewhere else so I can stop obsessing about it.

  6. I am sooo with you on lists. Love ’em. I hate cardio machines to be honest. The only way I can handle them is if I’m doing HIIT style workouts. It’s just so monotonous to me.

  7. Molly says:

    Do fitbloggin! Im going!!!! 🙂

  8. Becca says:

I write myself little notes. And then ignore them. Heh. But I’ll snag a post-it and scribble a reminder to myself–like today, I have to buy tickets for our high school’s musical (SUPER excited!). And then sometime tonight find time to write a paper that’s due tomorrow (oops).

I’ll be honest, I don’t “work out” much. Actually, not at all. Aside from walking to and from the car/classes, and sometimes (Monday night, last night) lifting boxes at work. And some Wednesdays I do a little jogging to catch up to kids or to grab my camera or something… I go up and down the stairs at home rather frequently. OH. AND I have Avi-Motion “shape-up” shoes. Not Shape-Ups, technically, since they’re not Sketchers (ew. Tried them, but they didn’t feel right) but the Avia brand. They’re amazing. I wear them all the time. I wore a different, flat shoe on Sunday afternoon (went shoppin’ with my dad!) and it felt SO WEIRD. And then when I put my Avis on again on Monday, it hurt to walk. 😛

  9. I love cardio machines – especially the treadmill, step machine, eliptical and bike. I’ve been really bad staying awake at night with a head full of thoughts recently. I keep saying to myself that I should get a note book for my bed side table so I can get those thoughts out of there!

  10. I think I’ve missed something, but why will there be no HLS 2011?

    Up since 4 am?!? Yikes!!!

    • Tina says:

I’m not sure exactly but Catilin mentioned to me that there were numerous things making it unlikely. She said not to count on there being one, but not a definite no.

  11. Julie says:

OH no! I LOVED Blues Clues when Jack was little. Don’t hate me 😉

  12. Lately if I don’t force myself to go right back to sleep after I wake up, I will be up with my thoughts all night.

I’m also a huge list maker. Whenever I’m overwhelmed I make a list and I feel better / more organized.

  13. Caitlin says:

I definitely get a lot of anxiety laying in bed at night. I start thinking about all the things I need to do the next day before and after work, bills, etc. Sometimes I just have to rip my thoughts away from that and start praying. I usually end up falling asleep talking to God 🙂

    • Tina says:

That’s really true. Praying always calms my thoughts too. I tried praying last night and actually kept getting distracted with my own thoughts. It was just one of those nights.

  14. Becca says:

I do alot of my cardio on machines… I”m a huge fan of tredmill sprints and incline walkign… and the step mill!!!

What kept me awake last night? the smell of my roast cooking in the crock pot! lol

  15. Emily says:

I’ve really gotten into the habit of making my lists before bed lately; it helps me to clear my mind and get some clarity before laying my head to rest. As for cardio machines, I am a treadmill girl with the occasional short burst of stair-master thrown in. I do like cycling though but only on spin bikes and real bikes.

  16. Ameena says:

I make lists like they are going out of style!! My problem is that I can never remember to take them with me – hence why I forget everything I need from the grocery store.

I need a list to remind me to take my list. Ridiculous!

  17. Michelle says:

I love lists, too! And post-it notes. Both are part of my daily life, and a lot of them. I also love little notebooks, and notecards… I love paper goods!

I worry at night. About homeless kids, abused animals… its awful, and it does keep me awake sometimes.

And I think cardio machines definitely have their place in this world! I’m a runner, so I like the treadmill best, but I’ve been reaping the benefits of the elliptical, as well. It helps with my speed!

  18. I am a definite list maker – a list for everything!

I like elliptical machines/stairmasters, but sometimes I don’t feel like I get as good of a workout when I do them!

  19. We have a lot in common! I love me some lists. I think I love them more for the cool stationary and desk accessories than anything else! I’m definitely going to Fitbloggin! And I’m not into machines much, but if I must, the elliptical does the job with little to no joint impact.

  20. I am a list maker too but you are a little more detailed than I am:) I LOVE machines at the gym… the stair climber gets me every time! I love treadmills too, I might be the only person that does! Do both conferences! The thing that keeps me up at night is worrying about students!! Get some sleep tonight!

  21. Angela says:

I’m a huuuuge list maker too! The things that keep me up at night include thinking about my workouts the next day, errands I need to run, and of course, the “What do I need to do to make my life better and to be happier” neverending question! (If I thought about it too much I don’t think I’d ever get to sleep, but I do quite enjoy thinking about it sometimes!)

  22. oh girl, i love me some lists 🙂 they make organizing life SOOOOOO much easier! and cardio machines? i really enjoy the stairclimber and ellipticals…i used to run on treadmills all the time but have since enjoyed running outside more, so i just stick to machines with movements that i don’t have the freedom to do in every day life 🙂

  23. Rachel says:

I LOVE making lists. But I enjoy making them more than actually getting any of it accomplished.

I usually do the elliptical on high intensity for an hour. There are TVs attached to the machines at my gym so going at the same pace the whole time doesn’t even phase me because I’m buried in some terrible reality show or HSN.

Very few things keep me up at night. I’m a heavy, solid sleeper. If my cat and dog are acting up then that will keep me awake.

  24. I am a total “Lister”, too! I even have an app on my phone so I can list, but nothing is like writing it down on a piece of paper:)

Lately, I’ve been all about the stairmill because it gets your heart rate up in 30 seconds flat and you can walk up sideways or take two steps at a time, etc. I can’t stand the elliptical- it just feels weird, maybe because I have short legs and not as easy to reach the handles HAHA!

I do not like running, but really been enjoying the treadmill to do hard-core incline walking. Man, now that is a tough workout, especially incline 15%. Wowza!

I haven’t been sleeping much lately, but mainly because I’m overly anxious about this competition. I can’t wait to sleep in 2.5 weeks;)

  25. I make lists all the time and to be honest even the smallest things keep me up at night — I should have done the laundry, I should have posted about xyz, I should have called so and so, I need to do abc tomorrow, etc. I worry constantly.

  26. I love making lists too! My favorite cardio machine is the treadmill, but I’m also partial to the stationary bike and the Cybex. I usually do intervals but every now and then I’ll crank out a long run on the treadmill 🙂

  27. I can’t get enough of lists and loved when you spelled them all out -I heart them all, especially to-do lists and pro/con lists – I genuinely think it’s FUN to get your thoughts on paper in list form.

haha Love that you’re like truth be told i’ll probably just go to both -you nut! They do both sound great for different reasons!

I love cardio machines, especially my bestie the treadmill.

  28. Lori says:

I greatly dislike treadmills, elliptical and stair step machines… I honestly don’t like doing cardio inside, unless it’s a class like boot camp or something fun (to me). I will however do a few rounds of 500 meter rows (on rowing machine- KILLER) or 10 minutes of jump roping. Just can’t get over being super bored on the machines.

I like your reviews of the blog conferences. I want to attend them so badly but they are pretty darn pricey, if you ask me..

    • Tina says:

Yea, they are steep. I would likely only do both if I could get some form of sponsorship. Hahahaha. We’ll see how likely that is.

  29. My brain goes to bad places the second it hits the pillow! I hate that I think about everything that bothers me when I try to sleep. I haven’t met a machine I like. I don’t even know what most of them are. I hate the treadmill with a passion.

  30. Camille says:

    No HLS next year!? Nooo!
    Did she say why not?

    • Tina says:

Not specifically. I imagine its that a lot of the organizers have a lot coming up to plan another one – Caitlin and her 2nd book, Tina and her 1st book being released probably around the time planning for HLS would be intense, Heather getting married, and a ton of other just life stuff. She didn’t say definitely no, but not to count on it.

  31. Katie H. says:

I like lists! Whenever I feel stressed I write my to-do list out and feel more in control. No HLS? Boo, I def wanted to go in 2011.

I like the elliptical bc it is low impact… I hate the treadmill but sometimes it is a necessary evil!

  32. Jen says:

I have a spiral notebook that has every list imaginable in it, I would be lost without it!!!

    Jen

  33. I am usually so tired by the time I go to bed, I just conk out. Now I’ve probably jinxed myself. I like the elliptical the best. It’s better for the knees than a treadmill? But I agree about it being stale/boring if you’re just using it and not doing intervals or something to make it interesting!

  34. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Tina Reale, Tina Reale. Tina Reale said: list maker: I have a weakness for lists. I fill my share of notebooks each year with lists – daily to-do lists, … http://bit.ly/94iDQ2 […]

  35. Karen says:

Thanks for visiting my blog:) I am soooo a list maker:) And speaking of what keeps me up at night, my husband bought me the coolest notepad with a light on it so that when I wake up with something on my mind I can write it down so I don’t forget or fixate. I wish I could got to fitbloggin but that is the weekend my son graduates from HS. I should check out the other conference. My boys were too old for Blues Clues, but I saw way too much Barney.

  36. Syl says:

I too love lists, what I don’t like is not getting everything that needs to get done done, and having to transfer it onto another list ;-).
I use to hate running on the treadmill, prefer to run outside, but I’m getting the hang of it 😉

  37. I am a list freak. I make them for everything!

  38. Me + todo lists are close friends. Without you…I don’t function well!

I haven’t been in to cardio machines AT ALL lately. Outside of spinning, I can rarely be found at the gym. I tend to go through phases with my fitness- gotta keep it interesting!

  39. Jess says:

I’m a big list person – and do the exact same thing as you when I can’t sleep. my mind immediately turns into list production mode which then makes sleep basically impossible. AND so funny that you did cardio machines for your cardio today – I’m about to do that myself and haven’t done so in EONS. My knee can only handle the elliptical I think, it’s a test to see if on Saturday I’ll be able to run again. I hope I don’t get bored today! Wish me luck 😉

  40. I’m a crazy list maker too – always have been always will be.

Usually the only way I can last on the treadmill is with intervals… Gotta keep it interesting :). I’ve read too but then I have to walk or else it’s just too challenging.

  41. I don’t really enjoy cardio on machines – I prefer to get out and run, sprint or cycle outdoors. I do occasionally do my HIIT on the stationary bike in the gym but only if I have a bangin’ playlist on my ipod 😀

  42. Maren says:

I am all about the lists! Lists are the only way to get anything done.

  43. I am a huge list maker..love love love list making and find it very helpful. I like the idea of keeping a notebook by my bed. My mind races at night and I often find myself jumping up and coming down to the computer to jot something down or work on it or look it up because I’m afraid I’ll forget. I also am creative and when creativity strikes, sometimes you’ve gotta go with it and that often keeps me up at night.

As far as what machines I like, I really like the Precor Eliptical..it is my favorite cardio machine.

  44. I use lists almost so much that they get out of control and I freak out if I lose them. But all and all, they are very helpful. I love your list comparing the two conferences – I say you go to BlogHer, because I plan to go 🙂 No pressure though.

I’m so sad that there will be no HLS though, that was the one I was really excited about.

  45. I’m trying to get better at making lists. I tend to forget important things (like my children!) lately – overloaded mommy brain!

Things that keep me up at night: my children and their safety/furture, money and work.

  46. Sarah says:

My gym has several different types of ellipticals and arc trainers which lets me get creative with my cardio machines. One of my favorite cardio workouts is 20 minute run, 20 minute elliptical, 20 minute stepmill (or different elliptical). It’s hard to get bored in 20 minutes.
Podcasts are also awesome for cardio machine workouts. I LOVE Kimberly Wilson’s Tranquilty du Jour podcast (http://blog.kimberlywilson.com/). She owns two yoga studios in DC and during her podcast she interviews different women about a variety of topics ranging from fitness to food to living creatively, etc. I’m actually reading one of her books right now called Hip Tranquil Chick which I adore!!

    • Tina says:

I need to get in on the listening to books/podcasts while working out thing. I bet I would love it. If I could keep my attention focused.

  47. Elaine says:

I have a million lists- on paper, on the computer, all over the house. I just love crossing things off! 🙂

I hate the stair master. I think it is the hardest one!

    • Tina says:

Yea I don’t do the stair master – the stepper thing with the pedals?? I love the stepmill (revolving staircase thing) though. It’s always tough, but not in an “I want to kill myself” way. LOL

  48. Jenny says:

I am a TOTAL to-do list maker. I love that you use Steve from Blue’s Clues to support this, haha.

  49. I absolutely couldn’t live without making lists! I have a daily one, a weekly one, a grocery one, a blog-related one, and more!
