walmart made me cry

Is Monday over yet? I mentioned in my earlier post that today felt like a Monday. My visit to Walmart only solidified that statement.


I guess I should clarify that they did make me cry…but I managed to make it to my car before letting the tears loose. Although the man who caused them probably could have used that guilt trip. So, what happened?

This upcoming weekend, we hope to get the two kiddo’s rooms painted and set Makenzie up in her new room to have time to adjust before baby B arrives. We needed to get bedding for her before then, so Peter found a really good deal online from Walmart. I went there today to pick up our order and get a few groceries.

Within the first minute of arriving, I already dreaded dealing with Walmart. The woman at the front who is supposed to greet you as you come in and have buggies set out ready for customers? She just stared at me, a 7.5 months pregnant woman hauling a 2 year old + bag + child’s sippy cup. No hello. No smile. No buggy assistance. And even no help as I dropped the bag and cup while trying to get a wriggling kid into the cart I pulled out myself. Grrrrrr….

That’s not the worst of it though. Oh no. I went to the site-to-store shipping pick up area where a woman who had no clue what she was doing tried to help me. I felt sympathetic for her since she was obviously new…and didn’t speak English well, which likely made it more difficult. She kept telling me she had no order for me, but that was because she kept spelling my name wrong when pulling up the order. Then, when we finally got the order information she couldn’t find it in the back and had to wait for someone to help her. Fifteen minutes later I had the bedding.


But I still needed a receipt to verify my purchase of the quilt. She didn’t know how to print the stupid receipt either! By this point, Makenzie was getting extremely restless and starting to fuss and/or climb out of the cart. After another few minutes the woman finally claims she has my receipt and sends me on my way. I go to check out and pay for my other groceries, and then, the fun begins.

After scanning all my other items, the woman at the register asks me to pull the item from my undercart for her to scan it. I tell her it’s already been paid for and show her the receipt I picked up before. She then says that it isn’t a receipt for that item and calls a manager. Are you kidding me?! The manager comes over and also tells me that is not a receipt for the item and I either need to find the correct one or pay for the item.

I get that he was just doing his job…but in a pretty rude and condescending manner. In a roundabout way he accused me of trying to steal the quilt. I tell him about the woman who helped me before and that perhaps it was a mistake. He sends someone to find her to verify I had paid already. You guessed it. They couldn’t find her.This is unreal!!! Finally after another 5 minutes (and a look I wish I could have smacked off that manager’s face) they find her, clear everything up, and send me on my way. With a “thank you, ma’am”. And a parting gift of a headache, cranky child, pain in my lower back from standing so much with the sciatic issue I’m facing today. How nice of them, don’t you think?

    booooo to walmart. i try to go to big stores like that super early in the morning so i don’t have to deal with the crowds. usually the workers a still “fresh” at that time and not frazzeled from dealing with all the customers.

      I don’t know how frazzled they were since this was midday on a Monday. The store was relatively empty for a Walmart even. I almost wonder if they would have given me as much crap if it had been crowded. Then, they would have had to move on to other customers.

    What a horrible story! My mom had a similar incident at a grocery store years ago and after shopping there for 20 years, she never stepped foot in the store.

  3. I never have anything nice to say about Walmart. They have horrible customer service, they never have what I want in stock, their prices aren’t THAT great in the grand scheme of things, and product quality just isn’t there usually. The customer service of that store is what really burns me up. I’m sorry that happened to you.

    UGH. When I have had bad customer service, I have always complained as high up as I possibly could. Generally, I have gotten apologies, coupons (not at Saks, though, when they charged me TWICE for a pair of shoes and tried to blame it on my bank- but I did get free shipping.), or simply, nothing. I haven’t patronized the stores that did nothing again.

    I am appalled that happened to you! On the other hand, that quilt is simply ADORABLE. I don’t think Walmart is known for its sparkling customer service- maybe Target is better? Hope today is a better day!

  5. I hate Walmart. I refuse to go there anymore (it’s been like 2 years since I’ve been in one). They have gotten ridiculous and everyone that works there seems extremely unhappy. I’m sorry you went through that. I hope you feel better today!

  6. I think our worst experience was dealing with a lawn mower and Sears. After buying it and having to get it replace/fixed TWICE in a year… The guy refused to help load it in my car because he was scared of my dog (who is a complete sweetheart), and then they proceeded to call us at least once a week for 2 MONTHS telling us our lawnmower was in…even though it had already been picked up and we repeatedly told them that. ARGH

    Good grief – what a horror story!

    I’m so sorry you had to deal with that – you’d think they’d have more sense?!?!

    I think Walmart may be the place I’ve dreaded most for issues like that, but sometimes the customer service on airlines can be pretty awful too. Thankfully, in Anchorage the Walmart staff are pretty polite, even though some of them are clueless.

    OH MAN! That really ticks me off. HOW RUDE! I hate feeling like I’m being accused of something I didn’t do and not being able to defend myself properly.

    On a side note, I love that you all call carts “buggies”. I met up with a group of internet friends from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia one year – I was the only West Coast girl there…(they thought I had a funny accent…WHAT accent?) and I thought it was so funny they called them buggies. Lot’s of other sayings I had NEVER heard of either.

    I hate Walmart because it seems like the second I walk in everyone around me goes into lethargy mode. They clog up the isles and block me. I feels so annoyed every time I go in!

    Delta is my all time horror story for customer service. Its a long crazy story that involves being involuntarily bumped from our flight and not being rebooked and having to fend for ourselves with no phone and hotel. It got worked out and we were handsomely rewarded thanks to EU flight laws.

  13. OMG this is SO wal-mat. Sadly, I deal with crap customer service quite often. Most recently was the purchase of my vehicle. Sigh. I HATE situations like what you described. So annoying and unfortunate. I hate any errands, but especially ones that involve wal-mart. I won’t go. LOL

  14. Walmart almost always = bad customer service. We’ve had those issues with site to store too. (I’m still waiting for the workout dvds to arrive …) it’s a great idea, but doesn’t work so well. So rude. People are sometimes not nice at all.

    The whole situation was just rude! I hope you tweeted the link to this post to the Walmart account! At the very least you should get an apology from them.

    I had a Fed Ex issue last month that Twitter actually helped me resolve.

  20. Oh wow, boo Walmart! I hate dealing with bad customer service and have had it way too many times.. and I always give feedback to the restaurant / store / whatever if I have had bad service, otherwise they’re never gonna make it better.

  21. Walmart really sucks. I avoid it at all costs, but sometimes the deals are too good. I go out of my way to go to the Walmart 1 town over that is open 24-hours.. I go at midnight. At least the crowds are less. I think they pretty much hire anyone and pay them peanuts.
