Call for Music Suggestions!

Posted: February 1, 2011 at 11:13 pm

I’ve never been a huge worker-outer-to-music type of gal. When doing weights, I like to go sans music to really focus on what I am doing and get energy from others in the gym. When doing cardio, I typically would either take a group fitness class, do a DVD at home, or zone out in my own head. All of those options didn’t require music.

Yet, there is something different about the treadmill and getting into a running groove. Or a run/walk groove per the C25K routine. I craved music in my workout today. Speaking of my workout – LOVED IT!!!

I can’t wait to complete this program and then run my first 5K ever. I have my eye on one in the not too very distant future. 😉 Although, does this description sound too advanced or just right for a first 5K with a goal of just finishing?

Course is point to point. The surface is packed smooth gravel in the quarry with rolling hills to a flat finish.

Back to my music needs. Since I haven’t really worked out with music in years, I now need to download a whole new playlist for C25K. Any suggestions? I will admit that for workouts I like upbeat, peppy music (aka girly pop) and then also old school hits. Oh and energetic contemporary Christian hits. I already have a list including Glee, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Sir Mix A Lot, etc.

Any suggestions or favorites to share? Thoughts on the race description? And do you ever prefer NOT working out with music?

  1. A couple favorites: Tightrope by Janelle Monae, Late Night Ramble by 18 South, Mercy by Duffy, Right as Rain by Adele, Hey Soul Sister by Train, de ja vu by Beyonce, Tik Tok by Ke$ha, and Shut Up and Let me Go by the Ting Tings.

  2. Cori says:

Hey there-I always have music on the treadmill and quiet when I run outside. That is my time to clear my head and talk to God. When I listen to music, I have to admit to cheesy show tunes. Love the soundtrack to Chicago and MamaMia. Happy Running!!

  3. Cynthia says:

I love working out with music. Pretty much anything by Lady Gaga is great on a playlist . . . especially Just Dance. I also love Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, Bulletproof by La Roux, The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson and Womanizer by Britney Spears.

  4. Stephanie says:

I love music perhaps a little TOO much! I definitely dance/groove/run sometimes. 🙂

    I’m loving Usher & Ne-Yo lately!

  5. I actually trained for my half with no music, but lately I’m on a music kick. I typically use Pandora and switch up genres based on my mood and workout. I also just downloaded Katy Perry’s CD- and for some reason the Peacock song just gets me pumped!

  6. Amanda Perry says:

Tina – you’re going to love working out with music. You can still zone out and think at the same time. 🙂

Here’s a few of my favs.. Sound of Madness by ShineDown, Goodbye by Kristen Debarge, Something Beautiful by NeedtoBreathe, Love and Memories by O.A.R, Amazing by Josh Kelley, I Worship You by MercyMe

    Enjoy!

  7. The race description sounds great! You will be fine. I think you may enjoy the crushed gravel and the rolling hills versus a flat long road. You are going to do great!

  8. I’m very random…Glee, Jason Aldean, Matthew West, Casting Crowns, Rascall Flatts, Burlesque, Jordin Sparks, Kanye West, Bottoms UP (cant remember artist) <—Don't judge..lol..I have a WIDE variety of taste

  9. Lizzie says:

I weaned myself off my music when I almost got myself run over by a truck (!), but there are definitely songs I listen to pre-run/race to get me in the mood 🙂 : Bonafide Lovin’ (Chromeo) We Are The People (Empire of the Sun) You Make My Dreams (Hall and Oates), Viva la Vida (Coldplay), 21st Century (Weekend Players), Start of Something (Scott Simon), Only This Moment (Royksopp), Time of Our Lives (Paul Van Dyk), Golden (Jill Scott), Make It Mine (Jason Mraz), Wonderful (Gary Go).

  10. Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears are on every single one of my workout playlists!

  11. Oh boy. My ipod is somewhat embarassing. I hate to admit it but the only thing that can really get me moving on the treadmill is hip hop with a strong beat and usually obscene lyrics. I have tried to listen to nicer things but there is something about the beats in hip hop music that really get me moving, even though the lyrics are often quite derogatory to women. It’s scary. My current fave though which isn’t “bad” is Calabria by Enur (the remix with Mims on it!). Whew. I confessed my shame. lol

  12. I picked an April 9 (I believe) 5K for us to do. I think having a goal in the near future helps motivate you to keep up the work, but you don’t seem to lack motivation ever for exercising 🙂 Sounds like a fun race! Ours is on a parkway by my work actually! There’s some killer hills … we need hill practice!

  13. For Christian music Outcast by Kerrie Roberts, let’s Dance by Hawk Nelson, Life by Beckah Shae, burn for you by TobyMac

Michael Jackson Don’t stop til you get enough
Great DJ by the ting tings

  14. Karen says:

I definitely have Britney Spears on my playlist! When I hear some of the more upbeat faster songs I get into a pretty good groove on the treadmill. Well that’s the way it’s worked for my first two running sessions anyway : )
