Music Love

Posted: March 10, 2011 at 6:57 pm

I find it hard to believe that I used to never workout with music. Now, I’m obsessed! Awhile ago, I transferred a bunch of music to our iPhone for me to use during my workouts. For the longest time I just let the songs play on shuffle. That got annoying really fast. How is it that with over 150 songs it seems the same 20 get played over and over again? I ended up always having to mess with my iPhone mid-run to get something new.

So, I took matters into my own hands. I went through and organized my music into a bunch of mini-playlists by genre. Things like “Upbeat Girly” (Katy-Perry-esque), “Old Rock” (Aerosmith-esque), “Glee” (it gets its own category), “Lady Gaga” (she does too), “Teeny Bopper” (Taylor-Swift-esque), “Christian” (Relient-K-esque), and more.

Then I added another playlist entitled “Mini Workout”. Before every workout, I clear out the songs from this playlist and then go through and add 1 or 2 songs to it from all my genre playlists. This helps me pick what I’m in the mood to listen to each workout and rotate out my music so I don’t get bored. Plus, I get a nice little mix of things every workout. My recent playlist featured the following songs I am currently obsessed with:

Katy Perry’s Firework

Seriously – obsessed with this one right now. It pumps me up!!!

David Crowder Band’s Like A Lion

I love inspirational songs like this to keep me going strong.

Aerosmith’s What It Takes

This is my favorite Aerosmith song for some reason. I heart Steven Tyler!

Kelly Clarkson’s Don’t Let Me Stop You

Can you tell I like girly music?

Glee’s version of Gives You Hell

I’m a total Gleek. I own it.

P!nk’s F***ing Perfect

Once again..can you tell I like girly music?

Question of the Evening – What songs are you currently obsessed with? How do you manage your workout playlists?

I hear you with the repeats when playing on shuffle. I use an iPod Shuffle, and sometimes I feel like I am just NOT in the mood to listen to anything on it! My two current favorites that I would never skip over are:

    -Runaway Baby, Bruno Mars
    -F*ck You, Glee Cast

  2. I listen to Pandora stations on my phone when I run, and at the gym I watch tv, so I don’t really have playlists — but I do like that Katy Perry song — it fires me up in the car! I like Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Britney, Xtina, etc — anything pop really gets me fired up to workout!

  3. Stephanie says:

I didn’t realize that for the past week I’ve only been listening to the *Most recently downloaded* oops. Adele’s Rolling in the Deep has been on repeat 🙂

  4. Kara says:

I like my Nano’s option to shuffle a playlist, I just put all my upbeat running stuff on one list and then shuffle.

    I really like running Enimem!

  5. marcia says:

I use my MP3 Player and mostly listen to my spin class playlists while running or working out. I will try to make up my own playlists from time to time as well. I really like listening to–
    Paramore
Kanye West ( Power, Champion and Stronger)
    Eminem
    Black Eyed Peas
    Katy Perry
plus a few people on my spin lists..usually longer remixes 6 mins and over:
    Florence and the Machine
Ellie Goulding ( Starry Eyed– awesome song!!))

I could go on and on!
I am currently thinking of songs for my 1/2 marathon playlist!! 🙂

  6. Tracy says:

It’s impossible for me to have a good workout without music. I arrange mine by mood. Examples of my workout play list names are “Angry Workout” “Happy Workout” and “Manic Pace Workout”. I actually get the best workouts when I’m in the angry mode LOL.

  7. Lauren says:

I am really bad at managing my playlists. I have a ton labeled running, but then I never know what’s on each of them. Girly music is all over my playlists, especially Katy Perry & Britney’s new songs!

  8. I like girly music, too. I’m currently obsesed with You Are More by 10th Avenue North. I don’t know why but that song pumps me up.

    • Tina says:

I’ll have to look that one up!

    • Becca says:

I <3 TAN! The Light Meets The Dark and Over & Underneath are two of my favorite CDs! "House of Mirrors" is pretty awesome, too! All of their stuff is good, but a lot of it is more mellow, which is kinda nice. 🙂

  9. I always love Pink, Dido and Sarah McLachlan. Lately I’ve been loving Mumford and Sons, Adele and Florence and the Machine.

  10. Lee says:

Currently obsessed with The Cave by Mumford and Sons. That and The Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel which is the most random thing ever, I know.

  11. I really need to update and add some new tunes to my playlist! I like a variety from Black Eyed Peas to Stevie Nicks and Bruno Mars to Heart! Anything that is upbeat and would normally make me want to get up and dance is good for my workouts.

  12. Meg says:

I am such a girly music junkie when I work out. Once in a while when I’ve had a bad day, I’ll go for the hard stuff (godsmack, saliva– you know angry stuff) but mostly I like intense upbeat stuff: anything Britney, Lady Gaga, Kimberly Cole has some good tracks, Katie Perry… oh the list goes on!

  13. O mannn! I used to listen to David Crowder allllll the time!!! hahaha I missed that guy and his quirkiness. Not to mention, his genuine heart and attitude!

  14. Tina says:

I am in love with Katy Perry’s new song ET, its soo good!

  15. Jolene says:

Wow, love almost the same entire list!! LOVE Firework, the lyrics get me every time! And F*ckin Perfect too.

  16. Love these songs! I am so weird with my choices of workout music – sometimes its the lyrics that hook me, other times its the beat, sometimes its so random. And I go through phases with my playlists – I will listen to the same one for weeks until I get sick of it, then switch to a new one.

  17. Thanks for the great music suggestions. I have been meaning to up date my playlist. The sone Imma Be by Black Eyed Peas always gets me super pumped so I always play it first when I head out for a run!

  18. I absolutely LOVE Fireworks by Katy Perry. Whenever I hear it, I do the “Just Dance” for Wii dance in my head. Whoops. 🙂

I also have been loving Until the World Ends by B. Spears and Born This Way by Lady Gaga.

  19. Amy says:

I lurve your suggestions — especially Katy Perry! I have also been loving JLO’s new song as well as Lady Gaga’s Born this Way (even more so because its her first song she wrote all by herself!)
I am first time commenter and just wanted to thank you for your blog! I love reading daily!

    • Tina says:

Thanks so much for reading and commenting! Now I can come say hello to you. 🙂 And yes – love the new Lady Gaga song too!

  20. lindsay says:

oh thank you!! I am now so excited to download the david crowder band Like a lion!

  21. Cori says:

I am obsessed with the Pink song F***ing Perfect! Love it!!

  22. Right now, Usher’s “More” sends me the message that I need to push harder!

  23. Becca says:

I don’t run or have a workout routine or anything (yet), but I did create a potential playlist of some songs that I love, all of which are Superchick… 😛

  24. Groff's Girl says:

I am obsessed with: Usher ‘More’, Taio Cruz ‘Dynamite’, Method Man “Da Rockwilder’ (oldie, but goodie), Katy Perry “Firework”, P!nk “Raise Your Glass”…that is just a few 🙂 I love how music can make me pick up my pace, or even get me to just KEEP GOING!!

  25. I can’t survive workouts (or life) without music 🙂 I have a few pandora stations that I’ve created and my ipod workout mixes include everything from techno to R&B to classic rock. My work it out song of the week is Satisfaction by Benny Benassi.

  26. This is great–love those songs!

  27. Kacy says:

I just have a little shuffle that I use when I workout, unless I use the Pandora app on my iPhone. I always tell myself I’m going to organize my music better, but I never do.

  28. Heather says:

I love the remixed version of Rihanna’s S&M! I can’t get enough of it right now. 🙂

  29. I love the ‘mini workout’ playlist idea. For some reason, I love getting pumped up to Black Eyed Peas ‘Let’s Get it Started’ and ‘I Got a Feeling’

  30. erin says:

I have a few different playlists.

My favorite is actually a high energy techno one.

But sometimes I am actually listening to the Juno Soundtrack … and if it looks like I am really energetic and pumped – I am probably listening to the kid’s playlist with Kermit, Elmo, Spongebob, Disney songs, etc. LOL. Love it.

And I do think I workout better with music. Some strength training moves get me tangled in the cords – but music is a must for leg days, I think.

  31. Emily says:

I loove having workout playlists. Right now I have a good one going at 20-something songs and I add a new one or two each week (mostly from Glee). Fav’s right now are Cee Lo Green’s Forget You, Carolina Liar’s Show Me What I’m Looking For (you would love this one!), a few Michael Jackson hits (Man in the Mirror), and Dog Days Are Over

  32. LOVING your music style, girlfriend. :o)

  33. Karolina says:

I have different play lists that range from relaxing music without words to angsty “on a bad day” loud, banging music:) haha. My workout music is all really upbeat and fun though. I also like the genius part of itunes, so I can choose music that’s a lot like one of my favorite songs. I love it!

  34. Two of my new favorites are No Plan B by Manafest and Faceless by Red 🙂 They both keep me very pumped up!
