I Hate Grocery Prices & FFF Features

Posted: April 2, 2011 at 3:35 pm

As usual, I started my weekend with a challenging workout at the gym. I did a repeat of last week’s “doozy” cardio and weights circuit but with different weight moves. It felt just as good today as it did then. Of course, I came home and refueled right away.

 yogurtbowl2yogurtbowl

A yogurt bowl with Chobani peach yogurt, blackberries, coconut, cheerios, and butter toffee almonds. With a refreshing iced coffee on the side. Food always tastes better after a good sweat session. This…well, this was downright moan inducing. It included two favorites I excitedly grabbed up when grocery shopping yesterday afternoon. Blackberries, my favorite fruit, were on sale and these almonds were also on sale.

Plus, I had a coupon. Otherwise, these two things would not have appeared in this morning’s bowl.

Allow me a bit of a tangent. Grocery prices are driving me crazy lately! It seems every week gets more and more expensive. I spent $140 (yes, $140!!!) on our grocery trip yesterday. The trip did include stocking up on some things that I had coupons for or were on sale that will last awhile, plus some toiletries, but I would still put our weekly grocery tab at $100-$115. I know I have expensive tastes on some things (my dear Chobani, organic/local chicken), but still. Grapes should not cost $7! Spinach should not cost $5! When did bread become $3/loaf? Whew. I feel better now.Although I fear the day B is a teenage boy eating us out of house and home..

Now that I’ve successfully brightened your mood with talks of grocery bills (sarcasm), its time for the features!

Featured Workout: Full Body Weights Circuit – I created this workout for my friend Danielle when I “played trainer” earlier this week. Remember – I am not a personal trainer, so if you choose to take the ideas from this, or any, workout I share you do so at your own risk.

  • Squat into Overhead Shoulder Press
  • Pushups
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Deadlift
  • Two Arm Dumbbell Back Row
  • Plie Squat
  • Tricep Dips
  • Reverse Lunge with Bicep Curl

I set the moves up as a circuit, so completing each move and moving immediately into the next. Complete 15 reps per exercise at a moderately challenging weight. Rest for 2 minutes and then repeat the circuit. Aim to go through the circuit 3 times total.

Question of the Day – Any good funny blogs out there you want to share? Are you pissed at grocery shopping too?

Here’s a funny blog (although not weight related). Got a chuckle out of me. 🙂 http://waveatthebus.blogspot.com/

  2. We spend between $100-$150 each week on groceries, although it is a lot of money I rationalize it based on it feeds two of us 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. If we at out we could blow through at least $100 per day for all those meals…

  3. Becca says:

I’m not sure how much we spend on groceries, though my dad did just go shopping this afternoon… Although some of our prices at work have gone up. Since the price of cotton is going up, the price of our cotton towels (that LOTS of people buy) is going up. They’re not going to be very happy, I don’t think… 🙁

  4. Youre right- food always tastes SO much better after a good sweat sesh!! 😛

And ARGH don’t even mention grocery prices!! My weekly shop was the equivalent of $60 for just one person!! Well, to be fair I do have expensive chocolate tastes! 😀

  5. Kristi says:

I’ve been noticing the crazy grocery prices lately. I think I’m going to have to start making whatever I can at home. It’s outrageous and I fear this is only the beginning.

  6. 3 dollars for a loaf of bread? The stuff we usually buy is closer to 5! So yes, it majorly pisses me off. And when I buy a big tub of organic spinach to use in my smoothies for the week….7 bucks! Better than eating out, but woah, man, groceries are sooo expensive!

  7. Melie says:

haha! This is really funny, because just yesterday I was talking about my latest grocery shopping trip and how I paid $104 at Trader Joe’s. And I don’t have a family to feed!

  8. Rofomom says:

The grocery store gets me every time! With 3 kids and diapers/wipes and everything else that comes up . . . we spend much more than I’d like to as well. . . thanks for sharing!

  9. Amy Lauren says:

I get some good deals grocery shopping, a lot of it has to do with where you go and where doubles coupons. I would check out http://www.southernsavers.com. They have store matchups and stuff with coupons. Also, I buy all our toiletries from CVS with their Extra Bucks or Rite Aid register rewards, and I really don’t spend much of anything by buying them there. What drives our bill up is produce and meat, really.

Everything is going up in price though because of gas prices going up, it sucks.

I like the idea of doing weights and cardio like that in a circuit, I’ve never tried it but from what you say it’s a good workout and working out for over an hour, it would have to be :).

  10. Cara says:

Grocery shopping is ridiculous right now! I’m pretty sure things go up a few cents every week! It is no fun! I used to be able to spend about $35-45 on groceries every week now I’m up to $45-55 and buying almost the same exact things!

I LOVE those butter toffee almonds you scored on sale! They are the best sweet snack!

  11. If it makes you feel any better, I routinely spend $150 a week on just groceries. It’s ridiculous, but I’m willing to pay more for organic and healthy foods. It’s just worth it to me. My husband is constantly questioning why I spend so much though! 🙁

    • Tina says:

Peter is always wondering too. I think we need to take the men shopping with us and show them the madness it really is with prices.

  12. I hate grocery prices too – seriously, every week it seems to be more and more expensive just to EAT!!!

  13. Danica says:

I literally just got back from the grocery store and feel the exact same way! I’m not willing to sacrifice the quality of my food, and it seems like because of that I end up leaving feeling just slightly drained in the financial/bank account area 🙁

  14. Yes grocery prices always drive me crazy! I’m trying to do more planning before I get to the store — looking for coupons online, etc. It sucks!

  15. You don’t even want to get me started on grocery prices. I don’t know how I will feed these boys? Luckily, dried beans are a staple here and I can get away with soups. Ugh..

  16. As a person who shops for a child with allergies, I find the prices to be outrageous, especially given the very small budget I have to feed the two of us. I just can’t believe how expensive everything is. sigh.

I don’t like grocery shopping for another reason. I usually have to take at least one child. It is never a pleasant experience. 😛

  17. Its 100% inappropriate but I love http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com. Hysterical!

  18. Karen says:

I definitely feel your pain with the prices at the grocery store! I always get annoyed when I see that some of the cheapest stuff in the store is some of the worst food for you – the junk food is always so cheap! I wish the healthier stuff was a little cheaper sometimes : )

  19. Michelle says:

Grocery prices are absurd! The biggest $$ spent (for me) is on produce and milk. My goal is to spent $125 a week (for the 4 of us) and lately I’ve been spending $150. Now, I COULD shop Wal-mart Neighborhood market and spend less, but their produce is completely subpar and I guess I’m a food snob.

Sometimes I wish I DIDN’T CARE about eating healthy and balanced meals because it would be SO.MUCH.CHEAPER. But, I guess in the end – longevity of life and seeing my kids grow up healthy wins (by a lot!).

  20. The rising grocery prices are getting a little crazy! With most things I’m pretty flexible and can buy what’s on sale, but sometimes when I go it seems that nothing is on sale. I think I need to get the whole coupon thing figured out better!
Your BBQ tofu wrap looks delicious – I need to try that!

  21. I always feel that no matter what I go to the store for, I always end up spending at least $100! Even just to get some basics! Everything has gotten so expensive and things add up so fast! I have to go and I have been putting it off all day!

  22. Cynthia says:

Grocery prices are incredible! Corey and I try to stay on a pretty tight budget, but we have had to increase it a little. We did find some great deals on produce at Trader Joe’s. We got a bag of baby spinach for $2 and 3 bananas for 57 cents. Pears were also 69 cents a piece. But everything is going up and it’s ridiculous.

  23. Urgh, tell me about it. I just got back from grocery shopping and thought the exact same thing.

  24. We just dropped some serious money at the grocery store too. I try to shop at Costco as much as possible, because a lot of staples are cheaper there. There are some things that I can only get from the regular store, though!

  25. I’m totally with you on the grocery prices – since when does it cost $3+ for romaine lettuce??!! It’s so infuriating that it is so expensive to be healthy.

How Sweet It is (www.howsweeteats.com) is my fave funny blog. I think it’s because I can totally relate to her (& her sweet treats are the absolute best & most sinful!) .

  26. Robyn says:

I agree some of these food prices are unreasonably high. I have been buying fruits and veggies as needed lately. We run out and I buy more, so we are eating it all. I don’t feel bad about doing it this way, but I wonder if I am “nickel and diming” myself.

I like to have some lunch meat on hand (ham or turkey) and bacon for the hubby. I have not bought any for a very long time. I just can’t make my self pay $9.99 for 2 pounds of poor quality bacon. I looked the other day and a package of unsliced generic ham was over $20.00.

Hope you have a relaxing Sunday!

  27. Sheila says:

Every week the grocery bill gets higher and HIGHER!!
It is getting out of control!!!

  28. I had been warned a while back that especially produce prices would creep up–and I think everything IS a tad bit pricier?

  29. I so know what you mean re grocery bills! We don’t even have kids yet and ours is sometimes that high 🙁 We basically make the trade off of not eating at restaurants much at all so we can a few fun items at TJ’s!

I’m looking forward to trying your workout 🙂

  30. Ugh grocery prices are just getting ridiculous. I mean you shouldn’t go broke for buying apples. Or feel like you can’t buy the higher quality items. Love that picture of M too cute!

  31. Sarah says:

Gah, I agree grocery prices are insane! I don’t know if you have a Costo but you can get tons of produce for the same price the smaller amounts cost. Plus I know the Costco near me has a Chobani variety pack.

    M is so adorable 🙂

  32. I hate how expensive nuts are!!! Those look amazing, though. Your daughter is freakin’ adorable!

  33. Nicole says:

The price of groceries gets to me as well! I run around the city like crazy to save a dollar, I also need to get better about looking for coupons ahead of time for additional savings!!

  34. Jolene says:

Groceries are expensive! for just me I spend close to $100 in many cases! But, I tell myself that I buy good, healthy food and eat most of my meals at home, so it’s worth it. I think 140 for your family is actually really good! Those nuts look goooood!

  35. Arl says:

Grocery prices are ridiculous! I went to the store today and bought stuff for a salad — lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, deli ham & turkey, dressing and an apple (plus some mac&cheese for theBoyfriend) and spent nearly $13.

That’s not counting things like Almond milk, coconut milk and Greek yogurt that I enjoy.

  36. Yup, it seems like my grocery bill is constantly increasing too. Or I may just be eating more :p I love barbecue tofu. I always make mine spicy! (http://www.confessionsofachocoholic.com/healthy/spicy-barbecue-nuggets)

  37. Missy says:

Grocery prices escalate in accordance with gas prices…yet another reason why we need more local!!! Unfortunately, until it catches on the Local will be more pricey.
    Conundrum.
At least you have cutie patooties to take your mind off things!

  41. I used to be pissed at grocery shopping but not anymore. My friends and I have found a way of making shopping cheap and fun: splitting. We buy in bulk and split the items and cost. We save money, time, and energy without sacrificing food quality. Since we are using an online tool called SplitStuff (http://splitstuff.com), splitting for us is easy and convenient. Shopping buddies can be as helpful as workout buddies!
