Going Through The Motions

Posted: May 9, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Hello, friends! Didn’t expect to hear from me again so soon, huh? Well – today is a two post kind of day. Sometimes its easier and quicker to put things into two posts. Plus, I have a lot to talk about this week for some reason. Two giveaways. Body After Baby progress update. Life in general.

This morning I awoke in a funk. I had that emotionally, mentally, and physically drained thing going on. I did not want to kick off my week in that mood, so I tried to change it around with a trip to the gym. I did my typical Monday morning routine and staked out a spot to run through a quick weights circuit a few times.

Today’s circuit had my heart pumping quite quickly. Gotta love when that happens!

Move Reps Weight
Push-Ups 15 bodyweight
Mountain Climbers 20/leg bodyweight
Cable Crossovers 12 12.5 # / side
Jump Squats 15 bodyweight
Overhead Triceps Extensions 15 12# / arm
Stability Ball Roll-Outs 12 bodyweight

I really pushed myself with this circuit. It’s tough going through those moves back to back with NO stopping. I also accomplished a new record for push-ups. I did the first two sets ALL on my toes and just the last 5 on my knees in the last set. Push-ups always kill me, so it felt great  to see improvement there. Maybe one day I will get back to doing push-ups with weight added to my back. Awesomeness.

After my weights, I strapped on my spinning shoes for my favorite way to cross train.

And I have to say – if you spin regularly…buy some basic spinning shoes. They really do make a world of difference! Love mine!

Once the 50 minute class was over, I left the gym feeling a bit better, but still not quite my normal, chipper self. I ended up going through the day pretty despondently. I was just going through the motions of playing with the kids, handling everyday duties, and prepping for final exam crunch time with the girl I tutor. I hate that because I really do try to appreciate every moment God offers me in this life.

By the end of the day I felt better because I kept working to shift my focus. I can’t stay in a sour mood for too long. It helps to recognize the many blessings that surround me. I mean think about the troubles that those in Tuscaloosa have faced recently! When Callie asked me to share about a Blogger Baby Shower to help send aid to families with young children in need, I knew I had to get in on the action.

All you have to do to participate is visit the baby registry set-up through Amazon by clicking HERE. Purchase something off the registry, which includes items in a variety of price ranges so anyone can help. Your purchase will automatically ship to a church in Tuscaloosa that will help get these items to those who need them most. As an added bonus – all who contribute will automatically be entered to win a $50 HomeGoods gift certificate from The Inspired Housewife.

Please take a moment to stop and consider helping. Don’t just go through the motions of life, expecting someone else to step up to the plate to help those in need. Let’s all do something about it!

  • What is a fitness gear item you think really makes a difference?

  1. What a fabulous idea for the blogger baby shower! I hosted a similar (non-internet) event and it was a tremendous success. It was a great feeling to provide needed items to women who couldn’t afford them.

And regarding fitness gear: sports bra!

  2. julie says:

Beyond the basics of shoes, bra, appropriate attire, I would say a Heart Rate Monitor! It helps me so much to know where I am and if I can (or should) push harder. First time poster! Love the blog!

    • Tina says:

      Welcome!! 🙂

And heart rate monitors are such a great too. In fact – I have a giveaway for one coming later this week!

  3. I love this blogger baby shower idea. I can’t imagine having a little baby in the midst of a natural disaster. Thanks for taking part.

  4. Okay I just went to purchase an item, but it was set to send it to my own address (linked to my Amazon account). Did I do something wrong?

    • Tina says:

Hmmm. Not sure. I was signed in as well and when I checked out it gave me two shipping address options, so I just had to click the church option. I guess make sure it’s listed in your cart as coming from the registry?

  5. I think getting shies for the training you’re doing is huge…I mean you wouldn’t run a marathon in Keds, right? Take care of your feet!

  6. We were just talking about getting the proper shoes this morning in my spin class. I think I’m going to have to take a look and see if I can find some! Hopefully you’ll wake up tomorrow in a brighter mood. Everyone’s allowed a funky day now & again!

  7. I woke up in a tired funk too…it’s not getting any better. I think tomorrow just needs to be a new day! I hope you have a great night of relaxation!

  8. Funks are no fun…but they make you appreciate the days where you feel amazing and happy. I hope you feel better!

I don’t spin as much anymore unfortunately, but I’ve always been interested in the shoes when I did do it more often…if I pick it back up, I’ll definitely look into it.

  9. Gettiing fitted for my running shoes is probably the best thing I ever did. Other than that I love having a timer for doing workouts at home. I like doing that much better than counting out reps — I like to do moves for a minute or so and then move on.

  10. jobo says:

Aww! Hope you are now de-funked. I LOVE my spin shoes. they make a huge difference! Took me forever to find an affordable pair but I honestly can’t spin without them now .I even make sure I have room in my carry on to fit my spin shoes if I know I’ll be going to the gym near my CA. office! 😉 dedication or obsession?! Anyway, hope you are feeling better and rock on with those pushups!!

  11. I’m definitely in one of the funk moods today too. Just feelin blah, maybe it was because I had to go back to work after 10 days off, hehe.

    • Tina says:

Going back to work after such a long break will definitely do that to a girl. Haha! Hope tomorrow goes smoother for ya. 🙂

  12. Sometimes going through the motions of a good day can really help turn it around!

  13. I so appreciate your positive outlook. Everyone has bad days, but it’s good to try to find the positives and turn the mood around. Good for you. And good for you on the push-ups!

I like having my Garmin. It is a luxury, and I got along without it, but I really do like it. 🙂

  14. Tina, that’s great that you dealt with your funk so well! Exercise always makes me feel better, all those endorphins, and you really never regret a workout. I hope you are feeling 100% better at this point 🙂
A fitness necessity of mine is my Asics running shoes (specifically Kayano 17!) I have tried others but I have found these are the best for my feet and running style!

  15. Now that I’m going to spin more regularly, I really want some spin shoes. My hubby has some and says they’re definitely worth the money. I need some new running shoes first though. Hope you feel better quickly, being “off” sucks.

  16. Michelle says:

Sorry you’re in a funk! Glad to hear that things got better as the day went on — but I REALLY hate days like that.

I LOOOOVE my spin shoes. They definitely make such a difference. It’s almost like they make spin easier and harder at the same time.

I also am addicted to my Garmin. I can run without it — but there is just something about it that validates my run, even if it’s not the fastest/longest.

Hope tomorrow is a better day!

  17. Errign says:

Sorry about your funk today. I think that sometimes, we need to have funks to truly appreciate all of the good days 🙂

For me, a garmin has made all of the difference in my speed & drive to run outside 🙂

  18. That is one kick butt workout! I don’t think I’d dare attempt jump squats before a spin class 😉

  19. Jess says:

YES! Love when a workout snaps you out of a funk, makes such a difference sometimes. Especially when you’re not even really sure what the funk is about to begin with. Totally get that. I agree with you – spin shoes make a huge impact in a group spin class…I even got a pair for my husband who loves his almost as much as I love mine! I am mighty impressed with those push-ups…they are my nemesis!!

  20. Lauren says:

Hey Tina! I just wanted to stop in a say hi! I’ve been reading for a little bit now but haven’t taken the opportunity to say how much I love reading. 🙂 It’s great getting to know you and I can’t wait to get to know you some more. Take care!

  21. Parita says:

I love your attitude. A lot of people let their moods consume them, but you look outside yourself and are thankful – LOVE IT! And I think running shoes that accommodate your feet are soo soo important. Have a great night!

  22. Great post – I’m sure you have heard the song “going through the motions”. I love that song, and I definitely went through a period of my life where I just “went through the motions”. I’m trying to live each and every day to my fullest now!

  23. Lee says:

I don’t really spin, but find that good running shoes are essential!

  24. I know we talked earlier, but I just wanted to say that I love you. You are fantastic my dear 🙂

  25. Hey Supermom! Just have to say I don’t know how you were still able to blog so much the week you had your little guy…having M around to! You are super mom indeed 🙂 I am trying to get back in the swing of things but it’s been so hard between how I felt and how demanding it’s been!!! Much love to you!

I love that workout…I have been craving stability ball rollouts since I was 4 months preggo.

Love that blogger baby shower idea for charity. Such a great cause!

    • Tina says:

It’s only because I had done it all once before and knew what to expect. 😉 Things were SO much harder for me post-M. I bet you are doing a GREAT job. 🙂

  26. Karolina says:

I passed along a link to the baby shower via twitter earlier, and will try to include it in a post tomorrow. What a great way to help those in need!

  27. I like spin, but I still don’t have the special shoes. Soooo… I guess my current favorite workout accessorie would by my Garmin GPS watch. It’s so motivating!

  28. I love the concept behind the blogger baby shower! And when it comes to workout gear, I find a supportive sports bra to be essential.

It’s kind of funny. I become a certified personal trainer and the first workouts I turn to this week come from someone else. The book came in for me at the library last week and, after flipping through it, I couldn’t wait to give the circuits a go. Making The Cut includes a lot of […]
