Work Out

Posted: August 2, 2011 at 7:00 am

So, who all got sucked into the mindless reality television a la The Bachelorette last night? I sure did. For some reason, I can’t help myself and inevitably have at least one junky show like this to watch every week. Usually I will watch a night or two later, but I didn’t want to risk any spoilers so I caught the show for myself last night. Although I still haven’t seen “After the Final Rose” so don’t give me any spoilers about that!

We still didn’t want to get caught with a load of commercials though, so we made a little plan to use our time wisely. Because even spending time watching this show is a prime example of using time wisely, no? After a fabulous white bean salad for dinner and getting the kids to bed…

 bean salad

…we each took an hour to work on on our own tasks. I studied up another half of a chapter in my NASM textbook while Peter worked on a software project of some sort. Then, we started the trash TV and chilled together the remainder of the night. We usually only half watch anything on TV because we’re I’m too busy talking about other things, but we both found the finale rather entertaining. Hey – my brain needed a break after an overload of information on how to properly assess clients!

Although I’m not complaining. I love all the information studying for personal training has given me. I have picked up quite a few useful tips to apply to my own workouts. Each workout has given me something to get excited about and a new challenge for my body. That gives me the warm and fuzzies. Or, more aptly, the sore and hard-corezies. We’ll just pretend that makes sense.

In yesterday’s full body workout, I incorporated some of the suggestions on supersets and challenging the body with new moves. While the notion of keeping a variety in my exercises is certainly not news to me, my recent studies did serve as a great reminder and got me to actually pull out something different. The switched up layout and addition of some stabilization moves has given me major DOMS (aka muscle soreness) today in my upper body. I even managed heavier weights than I thought I could for most exercises. Guess that week of rest did me good? 😉

Yet again, I did three circuits of increasing intensity. I completed each circuit three times through before moving on to the next. It took about 35 minutes from start to finish.

Circuit One Circuit Two Circuit Three
Lunges on Bosu Ball Assisted Pull-Ups Leg Press
Underhand Barbell Row Stability Ball Crunch Jump Squats
Hammer Bicep Curl Alternating Overhead Shoulder Press Cable Chest Press
Front DB Shoulder Raise Stability Ball Chest Flyes
    Triceps Kickbacks

In addition to the weights circuit, I completed a 45 minute spin class with my favorite, favorite, favorite, favorite instructor of all time. I arrange my workout schedule around her classes because she is that amazing.

She kicked my booty. And it felt so good! Thanks, Sophie!

Needless to say – I’m back on my workout high. My love for fitness certainly works out. Now it shall be interesting to see if Ashley & JP work out as well. Gotta love my fabulous puns and tie-ins! No? Oh well. I still love you. Have a great Tuesday, friends!!!

  • How long do you give the new Bachelorette couple to last? I give a year. Tops. I don’t have any faith in those relationships…yet still watch. I don’t get it either.
  • What is the hardest thing to come up with for you in a blog post, such as the title or topic? Mine is hands down the transitions between topics!

55 Comments to “Work Out”
  1. I don’t watch the Bachelorette, but I do watch the Bachelor. I never think those couples will last either. They aren’t relationships built on the building blocks that make a successsful marriage.

    • Tina says:

I think that is my biggest thing with the relationships too. They are pressured too much and not very natural. Yet I still watch. I’m such a hypocrite!

  2. Sarah says:

Oh I hope they stay together forever! I know it sounds silly but I was so invested in this season. I honestly think they are so cute together and they both seem like such genuine and wonderful people. So, even if they don’t end up together I hope they find love and happiness somewhere else.

    • Tina says:

Yea. I always hope regardless that the people find happiness. And I wish more of the relationships would work out.

  3. I’m hoping this relationship doesn’t last 6 months!

I’m not a big fan of JP (if you couldn’t tell) … did anyone else notice how he pulled off her towel on the beach and was always placing her arms where he wanted them?? Very grabby, grabby!

  4. Oh I definitely got sucked into the train wreck that is Ashley and didn’t workout! 🙁

  5. Kathleen says:

I watched a portion of the show while on the treadmill :). Mindless TV and a good workout are sometimes just what I need. I give it 4 months.

  6. nate and i traditionally never watch the bachelor or the bachelorette except for the final episode but last night we were dominating housework (praise the Lord)! i’ll still say they won’t make it past 6 months though…and i’m about 98% sure that there will be some sort of crazy drama that makes headlines about their break-up!

  7. Alexandra says:

Awesome workout routine! I think the hardest thing for me to think of in a blog post is definitely the title, I always want to think of something super catchy! 🙂

  8. I didn’t keep up enough with the Bachelorette 🙁

And the hardest part of blogging for me is definitely the transitions between topics as well! I try my best to get them to go smoothly haha

When are you planning to take the personal training exam? I’m interested in eventually getting certified as well 😀

  9. Khushboo says:

I don’t watch The Batchelorette but I do know one thing–> sometimes mindless TV is SO necessary!

  10. I dont really watch TV that much….. but I love getting sucked into a great book or trashy magazine haha 🙂

  11. Not a Bachelorette fan – but I did like me some mindless TV. 🙂 Coming up with the catchy title always takes me the longest…
Back home now so I can’t wait to take a nice long run later! If you feel like getting your Truth out today stop over

  12. I just watched after the rose! i really like JP – i’ve always watched the bachelor since it started… my sister was on the show once too, with jake!

  13. I didn’t watch the Bachelorette this season! I’ve been so crazy busy this summer, i seriously can’t remember the last time i watched a full episode of any show last!

Anyways, I don’t think and of the couples on those shows have a great chance of staying together. I’m guessing they have about a 20% chance…

  14. I totally watched the bachelorette too! And the final rose ceremony, and this morning on Good morning america haha. I actually think they may last- they honestly seem so in love (for real). Although, I may be kicking myself for saying that down the line haha. That’s awesome that you NASM reading is giving you new ideas with workouts! That is one of the reasons I love for my bf to take me through workouts. He is certified through NASM and he always challenges me and has new things to add to my workout!

  15. Kelly says:

I have some faith in those types of relationships. I don’t understand why the guy is so forced to propose but I think that if they really work at it then it can last. Call me a romantic….

    • Tina says:

I think that is one of the biggest things that bothers me…the whole proposal after 6 weeks thing. I think if that wasn’t there and they had more real-life, standard type dates it would be more feasible to me.

  16. I was wondering how the certification studying was coming along. Love that you’re able to apply some to your personal workouts already. Love a good butt-kicking spin class!

  17. I have a tough time with the title posts — most of the time I think mine are so lame!

I don’t want the Bach shows – they just seem so fake to me!

  18. I love when I’m able to make it to my favorite instructor’s class!

  19. I DID watch the Bachelorette last night. My roommate and I were curled up in her bed jabbering away the whole night. I think its a fun show to watch with girlfriends, but I agree…there has only been three couples to last!

That workout looks awesome. Writing it down! Thanks Tina!

  20. I’m so embarrassed… but I did watch the Bachelorette. She seems flaky – I gave them 6 mos.

I agree with you on the transitions being the hardest part – I feel like I’m an ADD blogger. 🙂

  21. I actually haven’t watched the bachelorette this season but watched faithfully last year with Ali & Roberto. I have to say that I’m glad they’re still together (as far as I know).

As far as blog post challenges I would say transitions are one of them for me as well – I tend to try sticking to one topic and avoiding that altogether 😛

  22. i hate shows like the bachelor/bachelorette! it just bothers me that they are so un-realistic. the relationships never last and it’s kind of sad!

  23. I LOVE Cathe’s superset workouts! They are one of my favorites. I need to get her dvds. I’m with you on the blog topics…transition is the hardest. I hope you have a great day Tina!

  24. cheryl says:

I struggle with remembering everything I wanted to write. I try not to allow myself to edit (or comment on my own post to add) because it’d never end! I usually think of stuff I want to say in pencil-and-paper-free places like the shower or mid-treadmill-time and often lose bits and pieces (esp when I indulge my love for bullet-points and just post a number of short thoughts…always miss one or two). I try to keep a running note of things to include, but always miss something.

And I’m usually not a reality-show gal, but I do love Say Yes to the Dress…never watch the current eps (no DVR) but enjoy catching random daytim repeats. I love that it shows REGULAR women dealing with body (and family!) issues but ending up just GLOWING and feeling beautiful. My marriage may not have worked out, but I looked kick-ass in the Big White Dress and I love seeing other women light up and see themselves as lovely, sometimes for the first time

    • cheryl says:

Clearly, I also struggle with rambling too much!! And I do see the irony in replying to my own post saying I always want to add more 😛

  25. Thanks for not posting any spoilers in your post! I almost didn’t want to read it when I saw Ashley’s picture because I haven’t watched the last episode yet.

I give Bachelor/Bachelorette couples as long as the average relationship in America lasts. Statistically, it probably makes sense that only one couple actually got married, and the rest eventually broke up.

  26. Emily says:

I definitely struggle with making my experience into something that people want to read about. I try to balance words with pictures because I am soooo wordy when I write!

  27. While I’m highly skeptical, I’m going out on a limb and say they will get married and last at least 10 yrs…

  28. Title! Oh, man, how I struggle with titles!

  29. I dont have a TV so I only get to watch when were in a hotel or someplace that has one, and usually my kids are with me so it’s kids programming and nothing I find interesting.
I find that the the things that pop into my head are easy to put in a blog, it’s coming up with a title to go along with my random thoughts are tough to come by.

  30. On posts that aren’t recipe based, I think the title is the hardest. I struggle to name it something that is good for SEO but also catchy and makes people want to read it.

    • Tina says:

Have you added the Title Tag SEO plug in? Then you can title your posts all sorts of random craziness but still have the title slug something good for SEO. 🙂

  31. I have trouble coming up with a title!!

  32. claire says:

We are totally on the same wavelength! Bachelorette post and a circuit workout! I love your post BTW!

One of the hardest things for me to come up with is also the transition. I like listing them first (see today’s post) so that the reader (if there are any haha) knows what will be discussed…and then I like to sometimes put a little surprise at the end (my bachelorette discussion).

    http://www.navigatingnorth.com/2011/08/these-are-few-of-my-favorite-thingsplus.html

  33. Elaine says:

I watched that bachelorette, because I just can’t help myself! : ) But I don’t think I give them that much time either! And I couldn’t believe the sister’s reaction!

  34. Lisa says:

The worst part of blogging is the title for me. I think up super creative titles for posts and then remember “oh I used that same title last year” lol 🙂

  35. I think the hardest things to come up with are titles, followed by transitions!

  36. My schedule doesn’t vary much work day to work day, so I always fear I won’t have anything to talk about and that the posts won’t be interesting enough to read. But I love to blog about fitness and food, so I hope others like reading what I write!

  37. Oh gosh…including the couple months after filming? Three months 😉 but I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet. I might “skim it” tonight 🙂

  38. I definitely don’t think their relationship will last long. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a gorgeous guy/woman in tropical islands? It just isn’t practical.

  39. Anna Marie says:

Two thumbs up for a work out high! I was kind of getting in a slump because my friends and I had been running and doing the same DVDs, classes and etc.. So, switching it up really helped me get back into the joy of working out. Variety is the spice of life! My gym’s hours changed for university intersession so I have had to go to doing work outs at home due to my job but I am loving it because I have a reason to try new things and switch it up.

  40. I FINALLY caught up on your blog. Vacation is NOT good for my Google reader.

I took a page from your book while I was on vacation. While I did run, I wasn’t jazzed to do it and I ate a few meals with reckless abandon. It feels good to “cheat” a little and get back to focusing on being healthy — because cheating never makes me feel good! All that to say — glad you are back into your workouts this week (and yay for a good spin class!).

The hardest thing for me with blogging is wrapping it up at the end. I could probably keep writing for days (just like this comment).

  41. The hardest part for me is usually the title!

I had no idea you were training to be a personal trainer. That’s awesome! I think you would be amazing!

  42. Rob & I ended our evening watching The Bachelorette, as well. With a few exceptions the relationships never last. I’m not quite sure why I watch either. Maybe we all need a little mindless entertainment every so often. I know there are days I completely need to zone out after a day at work. I thanked Rob for being such a good sport last night. The Bachelorette isn’t his usual cup of tea; although, he loves some other shows that I never would have thought he would. Guys are funny sometimes. 😉

  43. Kara says:

I don’t watch that show, but I do watch other trashy TV. My favorite right now is Expedition Impossible because it’s a bunch of people whining about running 3 miles on the trails. I mock them while I eat chocolate, it’s very satisfying.

  44. Sore & Hard-corezies hahaha love it Tina! You’re great :] Bachelorette sucks me in too. It’s such a disaster but I can’t help it.

  45. I can’t get into The Bachelorette but I can’t say that Netflix doesn’t pull me into shows I wouldn’t watch otherwise! I just can’t keep track of when shows are on at all……

I DO love chilling with my husband after the baby is in bed though!

  46. The Chick says:

My biggest struggle is coming up with the initial topic. I want it to be creative and original. Once I get that idea settled in my head, usually the rest of the writing and the title flows.

I don’t watch much tv as we don’t have cable-but we will watch American Idol and The Biggest Loser online. That’s the extent of my reality tv watching. Sounds like I’m not missing much 😉

  47. Jeannie says:

Looks like a great circuit! I can imagine the DOMS! I am still working on being able to do more than two unassisted pullup. It amazes me when I see people bang out those!
