Lessons of a Mommy Blogger

Posted: May 1, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Happy Satruday all!!! And happy first day of May. I am having a hard time believing that one though. There is no way it is already May. Hopefully May will bring some great things our way. And even though April didn’t include everything I could have hoped for right now, it did show me lots of things. It’s amazing all the little life lessons that happen if we just open our eyes. Some pointless, some necessary. And all exciting. I know I have had my share of little lessons this past month! So here are my top ten Lesson of a Mommy Blogger: April Edition.

1. I don’t need meat in my life as much as I previously thought.

I know this one might be a little bit surprising. I am in no way saying that I am becoming a vegetarian, because I do still like eating meat and I feel it is a great way for me to eat to truly get a balanced diet and the nutrition my body needs. However, I used to make sure I had so much protein in my diet and lower fat because I thought that was the best way to have a fit body. Au contraire I have learned. I have been enjoying lots of meat-free meals and options lately and don’t miss having to plate some chicken with my dinner all the time. When I made the sausage & lentil soup, I discovered I loved lentils and I even served some of my bowls sausage free and didn’t miss it. I found a new love for tofu and how delightful it can be to cook with. And I don’t feel guilty for having a frozen meat alternative product because it is higher in carbs and lower in protein than chicken, like I would have awhile ago. Opening up new options in the way I eat is fun, but this girl won’t be saying adios to her chicken or beef either.

2. I actually LIKE yoga.

Remember, at the beginning of April, Nicole started the “Do What You Don’t Challenge” and I decided that I should incorporate yoga regularly into my routine? Well, I have stuck with it and that won’t be changing because I love the calm, strength, peace, empowerment that yoga brings to me. Plus the extra flexibility. I needed to improve on that.

3. Don’t be surprised if you get sucked into a TV series you didn’t expect.

parenthood Watched ONE episode of this online and now I have to watch it every week. I don’t know what it is. It doesn’t compare to Friends for instance. But I still find myself watching. Maybe it is the fact that it is actually a decent enough drama television series. Because we all know the reality shows are starting to wear on my nerves.

4. You will never fully be able to understand the ways of kids. Like how she is scared of the baby swing, but not the regular swing. And how running around bottomless is the best thing since sliced bread.

5. That not only will you never be able to fully understand how kids think, but also that you will never be able to fully protect them. Exhibit A:

We had a tumble down the stairs this week and it was awful being powerless to stop it. It was only the bottom 4 or 5 steps but it did lead to a nasty bump on the head and a bitten/bloody lip. I tell ya, that moment was probably the second scariest of my life with Makenzie. The first of course being when she stopped breathing and we had to rush her to the ER and spend four days in the hospital. I’ll save a Flashback Friday for that one. This week she was fine and her normal self within the hour.

6. Georgia weather is wonky. Could you puh-lease make up your mind if it is going to be sunny or rainy??? Doing both, in the same day, within my line of vision just confuses me. And we already know I am easily confused, so if the weather could be taken out of that equation that would be great. Thanks weather man!

7. Old Navy has great, cheap priced stay-at-home mommy wear. Comfy shorts and basic tees for cheaper than a jar of organic coconut oil/butter?? Yes, please!

8. I can actually run more than 3 minutes at a time! Yes, I am still feeling the excitement of that one.

9. Blogger friends are the BEST!

I relate to number 1–100%. I used to feel very guilty eating “meat alternative” chicken, etc b/c it had more carbs than it did protein. But now that I see all the wonderful examples of bloggers who are healthy who don’t eat meat all the time and have many meatless meals and still have a great and fit body–its been an eye opener and has changed my mindset a lot.

I think Parenthood is the best show on TV right now.

Blogger friends are the best! Once we move and get settled, I’d love to have some bloggers over to my new house for a cookout of some sort.

  3. Leah says:

I am enjoying your blog more and more! This post was great. I hope May brings great things for you 🙂

  4. Love this post. So great! And you are strong in more ways than one. I love that you are enjoying meatless meals. I think it’s great when people realize that meatless can be sooo tasty too. Hope you’re having a super Saturday!

  5. i love all these and on heather/beach’s page she listed some facts based on your blog and i think that’s great, love reading that kind of stuff!

the yoga challenge and less meat stuff..cool!

and yes , kids say and do the funniest things, dont they!

  6. I completely agree about meat! While I’ll never be able to give it up 100% of the time (nor do I want to), it’s amazing how it IS possible to feel full without meat. And, yes, I could eat tofu every.single.day.

I’ve also learned to love yoga – never thought I’d say that! For years I shrugged it off because I thought it was “too slow” for me. Slow or not, I LOVE how my body feels after yoga. And this girl can *finally* touch her toes! That’s huge for me. 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday, Tina!

You really don’t get much cuter than a naked (baby) tush running around! I’m so sorry about the accident, but I’m glad she’s ok! I can’t imagine how scary that other experience must’ve been…

  8. homecookedem says:

Love this post Tina!! You definitely had some good life lessons this month. I cannot believe it’s May. Wasn’t it Christmas just yesterday???

I’m so glad you’re liking yoga. When you become pregnant, you should totally get some prenatal yoga DVD’s. I have one, but of course haven’t ever used it. I can burn it for you when the time comes.

Poor Makenzie!! 🙁 I’m sorry that little baby had a fall. I can imagine that must have been so scary. We have steep wooden stairs, so I’m sure one day I’ll be a NERVOUS wreck. We’ll most definitely have to get some baby gateage up in here!

GA weather is totally wonky, hehe. Love that word wonky btw! 😉 You’d think I’d be used to it since I was born and raised here, but it still surprises me.

Blogger friends are the BEST!! I can’t wait until I see you again!! 🙂

Enjoy the rest of the weekend my sweet friend!!

  9. Well first of all, I just love #10 🙂 Secondly, I love that you love yoga!! I’ve recently become semi-addicted to it, and I want the whole world to realize how amazing it is, haha. And thirdly, the picture of your bottomless-babeh pretty much made my night! So cute! 😛

  10. katiivey says:

Great post Tina! I’m glad you’re enjoying some meat-free meals. It is very FREEING! Those Old Navy shirts look cute by the way :> and I’ll be praying that May brings great things your way!

  11. Vee says:

Poor little M – that must have been truly terrible thing to watch. Glad she was OK in no time!
I enjoy these flashbacks and generally looking back and appreciating every single moment of our lives. Great post!

  12. cardiopizza says:

aw, your poor baby! I am glad she is OK! (and that bottom-less pic is adorable!)

I am flying out of Atlanta May 14th…still wanna do lunch?

  13. Jessie says:

You ARE strong! Good for you, Tina, for discovering all of these lessons that I will definitely take to heart. I’m glad you’ve discovered your love for yoga (and Parenthood!). It’s so wonderful to incorporate MORE enjoyable things in life 🙂

Poor Makenzie! She looks so sad in that picture. I hope she feels better soon!

  14. Katie says:

    1. I agree there are so many great sources to get protein (eggs, protein powder, tofu, soy, beans, yogurt the list goes on!) that meat isn’t even needed every day, and you can eat very balanced, (although I still love my meat! :))
    2. I ran around naked all the time as a baby (says my mom) and I assure you…I am not a ‘streaker’ of any sorts today 😉
    3. I’m sure you are a WONDERFUL mom… and yet, it goes to show we can’t control everything, (even if we try our hardest)
    4. Blogging friends RULE!
    5. I love Old Navy…esp. for workout clothes!
    6. You are strong! (Christ LIVES in you! :))

  15. Sarah says:

What are some of your favorite tofu recipes? I have a block sitting in my fridge; I’m not quite sure what I want to do with it yet.
