satisfying cravings

Posted: August 21, 2010 at 5:30 pm

This weekend proved itself successful already. Project “get dessert” last night went off without a hitch. I then followed it with project “have fun” today. Church potlucks and lunches with great friends always seem to bear the sign Satisfaction Guaranteed. I needed a little satisfaction after a busy week and tiring day.

Last night, we had a potluck dinner sponsored by the members of the Walk to Emmaus community in our church. Walk to Emmaus is a three day retreat meant to bring attendees closer in their relationships with God. Peter & I plan on going in November as it is highly recommended for church leaders and sounds like an experience worth having.

We began the night with a prayer and then food. Good food. I got a plate full of veggies with a small BBQ sandwich. Carrots, grape tomatoes, a bean/bell pepper/jalapeno/cilantro relish, veggie casserole, and salad dominated my dish.

I opted for mostly veggies to save room for the desserts. Not only did they have sweets, but they had THE sweet I crave.

IMGP6218

Lemon pie. I ate mostly the filling and nibbled a small brownie and apple crumb bar. I think the sugar even gave me extra energy for the praise songs.

IMGP6220

We also spent much of the night talking to friends and enjoying the sense of community in our church. I love these people!!

I also love Em! Today, after a Power workout at the gym, I met up with Em for lunch. We went to a new to us restaurant called The Tin Drum. They have various curries, noodle bowls, spring rolls, soups, and more. We had such a hard time deciding so we figured sharing a few top contenders would work best.

We got Thai Basil rolls with tamarind sauce..

IMGP6223

a veggie tempura plate with spicy thai chili sauce

IMGP6225

…and a masala curry dish that had chicken, cashews, carrots, potatoes, rice, and curry.

IMGP6227

A perfect lunch. Neither of us could believe how good it was! And amidst our almost three hours of chatting we declared so numerous times. I always have the best time with Em and our lunch certainly satisfied my craving for a nice, relaxing, pleasant time today. We can talk for hours and hours. It seems like we’ve known each other forever and not just met through the blogging world a few short months ago. I just realized I don’t have a picture of the two of us from today. Next time we need to remember! Especially since we both have the baby bump going on. 😉

  1. Thanks for your comment!!! 🙂

I love potlucks because I love variety!!!

    My favorite cuisine is Mexican!

  2. Good for you getting some good eats in! Oh, I would have liked to have seen the bellies today! I am sure it was a great time for you and Em! The food there looks delicious. I can’t say that I am good at potlucks since we have so many food allergies. It really ties us to not being able to eat much. Our favorite cuisine here is definitely Mexican. I like that is can be so interactive! The boys love that aspect of it. Have a great night!

  3. Meg says:

Yum. I love lemon everything. <3 I definitely love potlucks though it's hard for me to learn to just have a bite or two of everything.

My favorite cuisine is probably Thai and Italian.

p.s. Sorry I took forever, but I added the are you in? button to my blog! Ever since you made the announcement, I've tried to actively reflect on this everyday. 🙂

  4. Chocolate…that’s my favorite cuisine. It’s a problem 😉

  5. I love Mexican and Asian the best too! My husband is Mexican and his family makes the BEST food ever!

  6. homecookedem says:

I just love YOU!!!!! I had a wonderful time as always with you!! Thanks for the wonderful talk and seriously, could we have picked out better things from that menu?! That was an awesome lunch!! I already told Andrew about the gluten free menu and I think we’ll probably be going there soon!! I’m looking forward to going to Cheeky next time with you!! 🙂 And we will definitely have to remember to get a belly picture next time!!!! 🙂 Speaking of Cheeky, mexican is most def. my favorite cuisine… I don’t know which would come next for me – italian or asian… it might be a tie! 😉 Oh and I love potlucks!! I love being able to try out a little bit of everything and like we talked about today, church potlucks are always the yummiest!! 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!! 🙂

    • Tina says:

And ummm I had a total fail…I LEFT the Justin’s!!!! 🙁 I’m seriously tempted to call and see if they saved it. LOL

  7. Lee says:

I’m glad your potluck was successful.

My favorite type of food is Mediterranean followed closely by Asian.

  8. Hooray for satisfying your cravings with a LEMON dessert (my personal fave too). I really do love any type of potluck or BBQ get together. There is nothing better than spending time with people you love and food you love! To me, eating alone is the worst!

  9. Heather says:

italian all the way! but good mexican is a close second 🙂 and potlucks can be fun, depending on the food…it’s usually hit or miss though!

  10. Ela says:

Glad you got your dessert fix and what sounds like good fellowship for you.

My traditional favorite is Indian food, but I love Thai too, but I’d have to say my favorite nowadays is raw superfood style!

Haven’t been to a potluck in forever but I used to run them in the bay area and love them.

  11. Ela says:

PS – hey, I have your button on my blog too!

  12. Is pizza a cuisine? Hope you are having a great weekend sweetie!!!

    • Tina says:

Ya know…I would have to say pizza is my favorite too if we can count it as its own. If its under Italian then its a no go for me. LOL

  13. SheFit says:

Sounds like you have an awesome family church community. What church do you go to?

  14. Penny Lane says:

My favorite cuisine is Thai, any and everything Thai
I love/hate potlucks because of the great time to be had in convorsation with everyone and I love agonizing over the food I am going to make. I hate it because I am gluten free and all the foods I love to eat but am allergic to are generally on parade.

  15. i haven’t been to a potluck since i was a kid! that’s probably a good thing….don’t know what i’d bring except cereal 😛

my favourite cuisine (besides breakfast) would have to be Thai. we have a vegetarian restaurant across the street and they’re practically family 🙂

  16. Camille says:

I loooove Indian food but I rarely get to have it. It’s a real treat though when I do!

  17. Wow, great job with eating so balanced. I was just on vacation for a week, and I was pretty pleased with how I ate…for a change! I splurged on the things I REALLY wanted, but didn’t do a lot of mindless eating on food I didn’t. I was far from perfect, but it felt nice being in control (somewhat) for a change!

  18. What a great weekend so far!
That’s awesome you’ve met such a great friend through the blogging community:)

    • Tina says:

I know. I’m really thankful for the blogging community. Even the friends I have who I haven’t met in person. It reminds me that with changing friendships from my past I still have plenty of a future with great people too. 🙂

  19. Cynthia says:

Hi, That is so awesome that you live in the Atlanta area! I didn’t even think there were any bloggers in my area. 🙂 I would totally be up for a meetup when you guys have one.

The food you ate looks awesome. I love spring rolls. I think Mexican food is probably my favorite as well. Yummy.

  20. Sarah says:

I LOVE potlucks! I love sitting around a table sharing a meal with a group of people. LOVE it!

    • Tina says:

I think the environment of potlucks is what I love most. Everyone is so comfortable together and its great fellowship. So important to have.

  21. Aww I love reading about bloggers meeting up. Don’t you just wish we could all live in the same area and hang out every week?

  22. eatmovelove says:

    I love potlucks yum!! 🙂

Love Italian, Mexican…as long as it’s not too spicy, it’s all good.

Lovin’ your new site. Did you find you lost readers in making the transition??

Why did you decide to switch and was it worth it? I’ve been debating it and a name change myself…but think, why be afraid to just be me?

    • Tina says:

When I first transferred from Blogger to WordPress I didn’t have many readers so I actually gained by switching to a better platform. When I switched to my new domain I lost a couple, but really tried to remind people on my old site I had moved for a couple weeks. I gained readers back quickly.

Now, I’ve just been updating the look of my site a bit here and there. I’ve been getting more readers recently but I think it has less to do with that and more to do with finding new blogs to visit myself, the 30 Days being shared, and just writing more as myself. I hope that helps answer your questions! 🙂

In short, I am happy with everything I have done on my blog so far. And I can’t wait to continue to watch it grow and do more cool things with it. 🙂

  23. Looks like you had so much fun with friends. Potlucks are great, I love to see what others come up with. My go-to dish to bring is a giant greek salad. Simple & tasty! xo

  24. I like your blog
    thanks
    val

  25. Leianna says:

I’m craving sweets now too. I’m 36 weeks and have never wanted cookie dough, chocolate and peanut butter so much in my life!

  26. Kristie says:

Potlucks are good, but I feel like a lot of times I get let down because my home church growing up seriously had THE BEST potlucks! I just got too spoiled ;).

  27. I love potlucks. Of course, I always stress about what to bring!

  28. My favorite type of cuisine? I love asian and mexican, but I also really like “american” — if you can call it that. Sometimes I just love a big juicy hamburger and french fries 🙂

I like potlucks, mostly to see what everyone brings! Plus I am somewhat competitive in “potlucks” — I like the bring the beat dessert or dip/chips, etc. It is pretty pathetic the more I think about it but it kind of gets me fired up in a good way!

    • Tina says:

I think that’s a great thing! Then you’re motivated to try out new recipes and bring something people will love. I always appreciate the people who always bring stellar stuff. 😉

  29. ashleigh says:

I love italian and mexican food. I also love potlucks, as long as they’re vegetarian friendly because I can try so many different foods. I love potluck desserts so I can have a tin taste of everything!

  30. That looks like an awesome potluck! My favourite cuisine is Thai for sure, but I’m really starting to like sushi (well, California rolls anyway). And yes, I LOVE potlucks! I like when there’s just enough planning to make sure you don’t have too much/little of one thing, but there’s still plenty of surprises and variety.

  31. Kati says:

Sounds like a great lunch! I have been liking the dessert a little more lately too :>

  32. Heather says:

The lemon pie looks terrific! My favorite cuisine is either Mexican or Asian food, love it and usually can’t get enough!

I like potlucks, but I sometimes try to avoid them because I don’t always have the best self control at them.

    • Tina says:

I used to have the worst control at them too. Now I always see what is being offered and choose the top 5 – 7 items I MUST have, then get a small portion of each. The desserts can still be hard for me which is why I like to keep the meal lighter and have more room for desserts. I make myself eat them slowly now so I can stop when full. I physically put my fork down and push the plate away or throw it away right at the fullness point so I don’t keep nibbling.

  33. Looked like a great church potluck! We REALLY need to get more involved in our church – and go more often like we used to!!
I don’t have a favorite type of cuisine. I truly love it all!!

    • Tina says:

Does your church have small groups at all? We weren’t too involved with ours until we attended an adult Sunday class. Then we were hooked! They are all our closest friends and it helped grow our faith so much. I highly recommend it. It’s a bit nerve wracking at first to join a group but definitely worth it.

  34. Chelsea says:

Loveeeee Mexican food. Although, I’m also a big pasta girl, so I suppose that would be Italian too. I really want to try Indian and Thai though! They look so interesting.

Glad you satisfied your dessert cravings! The potluck looks great! Hope you’re having a good Sunday.

    Chelsea

  35. I LOVE reading about your cravings! I’m 13 weeks pregnant and my cravings have been out. of. control. I am going to Taco Bell about twice a week and I eat fast food about once every presidential election. And I don’t think I had a single doughnut in the four and half years since my son was born. Now I absolutely NEED to have them. I hope these crazy cravings pass.

    • Tina says:

I know I craved a lot more fast food and carbs and sugar and grease until about 14-15 weeks. Then the healthy foods desire kicked in again. I still get strong hankerings for things but not all the time like during the first tri. It’s crazy all the changes our bodies go through, huh?
