BBQ & TBL

Posted: September 22, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Evening all! Thanks so much for all your concern about my ankle. It’s mainly scraped up and bruised on the top. Thankfully, not twisted or swollen in any way. Either way, you all really are such great blog friends. 🙂

Tonight we enjoyed the most simple dinner. Simple and healthy – my kind of meal. This morning I tossed a couple chicken breasts into the crock pot with cider vinegar, brown sugar, and a BBQ seasoning packet.

At night, all I had to do was chop up a few red potatoes, toss them in olive oil/salt/pepper, and roast away at 400 for 35 minutes. Peter shredded the chicken, plopped it on a sandwich thin, and then dinner was served. BBQ chicken sandwiches and roasted potatoes.

I love me some BBQ!!! I also loved TBL (The Biggest Loser) last night. Nevertheless, I do have quite a few issues with how the show does particular things.

  • Too large contestants. I hate how in recent seasons it was all about “the biggest” contestant with the majority needing to lose 200+ lbs. I was very happy to see this season’s contestants aren’t quite so morbidly obese. Many only need to lose 100-150 lbs, which is much more reasonable.
  • Not really educating the contestants. I think there is too much time plugging last chance workouts and sponsored products for their low calories, rather than educating on health and nutrition. Also, I think the extreme workouts and calorie counts don’t set them up for success in the future. It just poses an all or nothing mentality for them to go home with.
  • Therapist Jillian. I love Jillian and think she is an excellent trainer, minus a few unsafe moves I’ve seen her pull out on the show. However, when she plays therapist it drives me nuts. I think the contestants would benefit more from regular counseling from someone separate from their workouts.
  • Too much expected of the contestants’ bodies. These people have not been physically active in awhile. Expecting them to jump into 8 hour workouts a day is not healthy. I do think the challenges to make it onto the ranch last night were more suitable though. Doing 500 steps or running/walking a mile makes much more sense than riding 26.2 miles on the first day like last year.
  • Commercials within the show. They were really minimal last night. Let’s see if that lasts.

I must also say that all the contestants had really touching stories and seemed like they wanted to improve themselves inside and out. I really related to the girl who made the red team and had a bad relationship with food as a reflection of her relationship with her mom. It sounded similar to me turning to food in the past as an escape from my dad. That is why I still watch the show. I still admire people seeking to make their lives better. Even if TBL doesn’t have it perfect, the show still helps people who otherwise might never have made that change.

I’ve rambled enough about that show. Time for me to watch one without as much thought. GLEE!! I will leave you with this 6 month belly shot Peter happened to shoot of me. I should have known he was up to no good when he pulled my shirt up. 😉

Have a great night, y’all! Oh I can’t believe I just said that.

  • What do you like/dislike about The Biggest Loser?
  • What did you have for dinner tonight?

Love, love, love your “bel-bel” (as Addie and I call it), and that candid shot. You’re gorgeous.

(And I agree with you on every point regarding TBL.)

  2. Dev says:

I also really liked Burgandy (Purple Team) and Adam (Blue Team). Actually, so far I like everybody. I was so sad for the contestants that didn’t make it. I do hope Aaron and Elizabeth get a second chance and come back as Team Yellow.

    • Tina says:

Is Aaron the larger black man from the beginning? I liked him too. I can’t remember who Elizabeth is though.

      • Dev says:

Yes. Aaron was the big man from the beginning who had his wife and son there. Elizabeth is the girl from Boston that had an asthma attack while doing the steps.

  3. ashleigh says:

I agree with what you said about TBL especially expecting too much from the contestants bodies. I felt so badly for the people who didn’t make it last night 🙁
You have such a cute pregnant belly!

  4. Penny Lane says:

We are going to have fish from our fav fishmarket where we live.
I get frustrated with the short amunt of time spent with the contestants and all the selling of products that still aren’t 100% healthy. ww

  5. If I had those sandwich thins, we likely would have had BBQ too. Instead, it was fajita-style burritos. Yum. I hate the commercials they throw in too. Very annoying and so obvious. I have to agree with you on what they are putting their bodies through too. It’s not realistic for the general public first off so I think people can see the show then get really discourage when they don’t lose quite the same way. I guess that’s the biggest thing – it’s not totally realistic. They don’t live their daily lives like that

  6. Sarah says:

Dinner looks delicious 🙂 I love simple and yummy meals-they are incredibly comforting.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Biggest Loser. I love the idea of motivating people to lose weight and find a healthier lifestyle. But I think it sets many viewers up for disappointment. Most people (even morbidly obese persons) do not lose 10lbs a week. And I think that viewers who do not have a more realistic understanding of the proper/healthy way to lose weight, will get disappointed when he/she doesn’t lose that amount of weight leading to eating disorders or getting frustrated and giving up. Even Jillian Michaels on her podcast said that the Biggest Loser diet/show isn’t realistic for the average individual watching the show. It’s slightly aggravating but I still watch it for seeing the joy of the contestants discovering a healthier lifestyle.

Sorry for the long comment! TBL really fires me up!!

    • Tina says:

I can’t believe I left that one out! The unrealistic expectations it gives viewers is one of the biggest things I think the show needs to work on!!!

  7. You hit the nail on the head for me with the biggest loser! That is why I stopped watching it…all of those reasons! We went to Tony’s aunt’s house and I had a huge salad with fresh Tennessee grown tomatoes and chickpeas. Really good time with family!

    Love the baby belly!

  8. Lisa says:

That dinner looks so good! I have all these ideas of how to cook and all these recipes I wanna make, but I feel like I have no time! How do you do it?!

I also watched Biggest Loser last night. I couldn’t agree more about the fact that most seasons the contestants are so overweight and the fact that they really push their bodies to the extreme. I think thats unfortunately why most of them, except for a few, gain all the weight back. Its sad. The show needs to teach balance somehow. Therapists and counselors would definitely help, def agree with you there as well.

  9. ML says:

I completely agree on Jillian as “not” therapist. Bob acts more like a concerned friend who is there to listen, but Jillian just doens’t seem to have that in her. I have a college friend who was on season 5 or 6, I can’t remember, and he said they meet almost daily with a counselor. I think that is such an important part that they really need to include more of it. Not the sessions, but just that they do meet with one, and maybe some of the contestants would recap what they learned.

    • Tina says:

I’m happy they do meet with a counselor. I’m surprised they don’t share that on the show. Not necessarily taping the sessions, but the contestants’ thoughts or at least that they DO it.

  10. I honestly don’t watch TBL. And randomly had it on last night because I just like to have some background noise while I’m home. But I was catching parts of it, and I’m just not a fan. I don’t like how some people made it sound like this was the “end all” if they made it onto the show or not. It makes me sad that people put all their hope into just one silly little show.

    • Tina says:

Yea that bothers me too. I understand that many of those people likely need guidance and support that they could find on the show..but that doesn’t mean it is their absolute only option.

  11. You are so cute in that picture!

I totally agree with your point about them setting the contestants up for failure when they go home. Also, have you heard them say that once the contestants go home, they must keep working out 2 hours each day? I heard that on the show at some point…and I just couldn’t believe it. I think that is definitely setting them up for failure because most average people either don’t have the time or don’t have the drive to work out that much.

Anyway, for better or for worse, I can’t help loving seeing the contestants gain confidence and see themselves in a new light!

  12. Love the belly! I had no idea your belly was that size–its adorable and beautiful all rolled into one.

    • Tina says:

I think I was close to this size at the end with M since she was so small! LOL I can’t believe how much I’ve been growing in the past month. I feel huge! I know I’m not but I still feel so much bigger…which is apparently normal the 2nd time around.

  13. i LOVE the baby belly!!! so cute 🙂

and biggest loser – i think there are really good things about it but i do feel like it sets a really unattainable example for others to follow. but it’s definitely an inspiration!

  14. Penny Lane says:

I posted on forgiving myself today! Sorry about your foot! I did something similar to that, but I was walking on flat ground and managed to trip on my own feet:) Sometimes I wonder why I don’t dance then I remember my lack of grace

  15. You’re so cute!!

I dislike almost everything about TBL, except that they get a changed life in the end. 🙂

  16. Lauren says:

I sort of have a love/hate relationship with BL. I love watching and am inspired by the contestants, but I have issues with how the show is set up, just like you mentioned. I could absolutely agree with everything you said!! Things like the show turning into one big commercial and Jillian always trying to get the contestants to have a breakdown are getting really annoying. (Though just something a little ironic — as I type this comment, your left banner ad has Jillian Michaels in it, haha). It’s sad to say this, but as we watched the contestants weigh-in, my boyfriend commented that they didn’t look all that big. Every contestant has a lot of weight to lose, but in the past the show has featured such morbidly obese people that they seemed “small” in comparison…

  17. You look so adorable! It makes me miss being pregnant…a little 🙂 . I agree with TBL stuff – the commercials are so annoying and often promoting low cal/low nutrition foods not whole foods and basics!
    🙂

  18. I totally agree with everything you wrote about TBL! Mostly I get annoyed with the commercials (extra gum, brita water, BL protein powder, ugh!!!) and therapist Jillian. I love Jillian’s workouts, her dvds, her training, but when she turns into a therapist I want to scream.

And I do not like when the camera zooms in on their bodies — we can see that they are overweight/obese, no need to zoom in! Same when they make the camera shake if someone falls down — they didn’t cause an earthquake!

I’ll try to find the link and send it to you, but have you seen the article written by a former contestant (Kai?) — she has some pretty horrible things to say about the show.

  19. !!!! Look at your bump! I love it!

I don’t watch TBL, but I have wondered about throwing people into intense long workouts so fast. I guess my mentality is that I need to enjoy my workout and the “bootcamp” style just doesn’t do it for me. However, I do know people who love it.

  20. I do love TBL, but I also worry that they aren’t set up for long-term success. Too many of them, once they go back to their real lives and can’t spend 8 hrs a day in the gym, gain it back.

Dinner last night was a chicken and veggie stir-fry on rice. Pretty typical at my house.

  21. Kelly says:

Love the belly shot! You are a gorgeous woman and carry a baby well !

I agree with everything you said about BL ! I think it’s a great show with a great cause, but I think they could do some things a bit differently.

  22. I love the belly shot 🙂 Your husband obviously adores you!!
