When Plans Go Awry

Posted: December 13, 2010 at 11:20 am

You can do everything right.

You can put on knee high socks in anticipation of the colder weather.

IMGP9019

You can bargain with the kiddo to finally convince her to wear her winter hat.

IMGP9015

You can give your husband his birthday present a few days early, so he has a nicer and warmer coat to wear.

IMGP9018

You can leave early and stop by Kroger to purchase discounted tickets for a fun evening out as a family.

You can drive the 45 minutes to your destination, getting your toddler all psyched up for the mountain, Christmas lights, and a visit with Santa.

IMGP9013

You can pull up to pay for parking…and be told that they will not open that evening due to the weather. Seriously? I have lived in GA my entire life and can relate to the exaggeration of cold, snowy weather, but I even thought that was ridiculous.

I guess God has bigger plans though and knows what is best. I ended up with the worst contractions I have had yet last night. A little over 34 weeks is too early. It was scary stuff. What can I say? Sometimes plans go awry.

For my post later this evening I will be typing up a response posed to me by a fitness gear company looking for bloggers to work with and help represent them in the 2011 year. The post is an “audition” of sorts, as only 10 bloggers will be chosen from the ones they contacted. I hope you will come back to comment and support the post to help me out. Thanks! 🙂

Question of the day = has weather ever ruined something you really looked forward to? What?

  1. I’m so sorry you are dealing with early contractions! I hope everything is okay <3

Your husband's new peacoat is great – what a nice gift 🙂

  2. you most definitely have my support! i’ll be back…and yes, weather has ruined chances of going to work which i have been STOKED about! 🙂

  3. Tatianna says:

I live in Canada, so I am entirely used to unexpectedly being snowed in. Every year of high school we would get at least a week off simply because the weather was so bad in January and it wasn’t safe for the buses to be running!
It was kind of nice 😉 Sorry your night didn’t go as planned, but I love your attitude. I always try to remind myself that everything happens for a reason!

  4. Sarah J says:

I live in Wisconsin and we had a pretty big blizzard over the weekend. My lab holiday party was supposed to be on Saturday night, but it was cancelled preemptively on Saturday morning because of looming weather.

I was pretty bummed because it was the only major plans I had for the weekend, and I had already made my veggie pizza to pass, so I am left with a whole lot of food!

  5. Oh man that just blows big time. But M and Peter sure looked warm! We have the same over-exaggeration with winter weather here too. If there is even whisper of snow, the store shelves are suddenly bare like people may be snowed in for months!

    • Tina says:

That’s totally what I’m talking about. I get things needing to be canceled if there are dangerous driving conditions or over the top weather issues. A sprinkle of snow flurries and it being below freezing? Not quite what I would call an emergency situation. LOL

  6. Heather says:

You can come here….everything has been cancelled & it’s still coming down like mad. But I didn’t have to go to work…thank you Daddy! haha

Lots of plans getting cancelled around here today!

  7. Lisa says:

Aw, thats so annoying and 45 minutes! What a waste of gas! M looks adorable in the hat!

  8. Chrissi says:

I am such a “planner” that I get too into “plans” and always end up having to deal with it not going my way because of weather, moods, schedules, you name it. hope you’re feeling better today! PS-love the socks 🙂

  9. Lauren says:

Bad weather is so frustrating, but sometimes plans can work out for the best with it. I ran a half-marathon in the pouring rain, but I ended up not minding it since the alternative was going to be super hot weather that day.

  10. Its definitely a knee sock kinda day!

My M hates wearing hats and gloves. She pouts the entire time.

    • Tina says:

I had to fight her to get her to wear them…then she was screaming at me when I had her take them off after getting home. Really? I think she just enjoys being difficult. Part of the twos. LOL

  11. Sarah says:

    Oh, Tina!
First of all, it stinks (at least at first) when it seems like we’ve wasted our time. But really? I hope this comes out right, but I’m glad it didn’t work out if what you really needed was rest.
I hope you and Baby B are okay!

    • Tina says:

Agreed. I think the car ride set off the contractions more than anything, but I wasn’t upset to have to go home and rest if it was best. Besides, we can use our tickets this upcoming weekend. I’m not worried about it at all. 🙂

  12. Very frustrating…both the weather and the contractions! You and Baby B are in my thoughts today!

  13. Ah, I hate it when plans go astray. But I am a strong believer in things happen for a reason!

Thinking of you and Baby B today!

  14. Sorry your day didn’t work out:(.

  15. Sorry you drove all that way for that! Seriously, that is crazy!

  16. i was suppose to go into nyc sunday to see the tree, but it ending up pouring rain. and saturday it was beautiful and today is fine too haha, but im glad you stayed home, thinking of you and the baby, tell him to stay put for just a few more weeks!

  17. Cynthia says:

That’s kind of ridiculous that your plans were canceled due to the weather. It wasn’t even that bad! But I guess things worked out for the best since you weren’t feeling well. Hope you feel better soon! Take it easy on this cold, cold day.

  18. Marg says:

Hope everything is ok! You have my support!

I know what you mean with the over-exaggeration to winter weather.

  19. Melie says:

Wow, that is a lot of snow! It is 25C (80ish F??) in LA today.
I hope the rest was for the best though 🙂

Well, the worst I can remember off the top of my head for plans being messed up due to weather, is spending 2 days in the Chicago airport because my flight was canceled. Now that I think about it, it has happened way more than one times. That’s what you get for trying to travel during snowstorm periods… 😉

  20. What a bummer about last night! Here in the Northeast it takes serious blizzard conditions before they close pretty much anything.
So excited about later’s secret post! I have no doubt it will be fantastic!

  21. lindsay says:

we don’t get many snow days here in TX but if we do, everyone freaks out! its kinda funny. I hope your contractions have eased up and I can’t wait to see your afternoon post.
    LC

  22. The weather definitely made my trip to the mall yesterday an interesting one. You’d think it’d keep people home… nope… instead, all of us crazies FLOCKED to the mall. Ick.

And I’m totally rocking my knee-highs under my work pants today.

    They’re polka dot. WIN!

  23. Yes I will check back later today 🙂

I’m in MN — and weather gets in the way all the time! Plans to go to the grocery store can get put on hold because of snow, ice, storms, etc.

  24. Kelly says:

Weather almost always (3 out of 4 times) ruins my travel plans to get back from my husband’s Christmas party at a respectable hour the following day. That’s one trip where trains, planes, and automobiles are usually involved.

  25. Priyanka says:

Weather has ruined my plan on many occasions but today due to the snow I had the day off at work. Exciting!

I’ll be back for your next post, here to support you.

  26. Jess says:

I have to say, very cool on the “audition” later today! I’ll tune in for sure! 🙂

  27. Angela says:

Sounds like a very cool opportunity! Any chance it’s open to Canadian bloggers too?

    • Tina says:

I’m not sure. The company only has US states listed for where to purchase, and someone from their PR also contacted me so I’m not sure on how exactly it all works outside of what they asked me to do if I wanted to try for it. Sorry I don’t have more info!

  28. Becca says:

Yes, ma’am, the weather has messed up my plans! Over Thanksgiving break, crappy road conditions kept my best friends from coming into town. And Saturday, the snow + wind factor kept us (minus my sister, who left Friday) home from the wedding I was really looking forward to. Stupid snow. But I guess that’s what you get for planning a winter wedding in Minnesota… Seriously, who does that? The weather here SUCKS in the winter. It’s so unpredictable…
Plus, all that snow made the Metrodome collapse. Oops. Not that I particularly care about stadiums or anything. But. You know. That’s a lot of snow, to take out all those monitor-things and whatnot.

  29. I hate when stuff gets cancelled due to the weather. Such a let down!

  30. Early contractions? ug I hope baby doesn’t come too early!!

    • Tina says:

I’ve been having them for about 8 weeks already now. The midwife at my last appt said it can be normal as long as they aren’t more than 6 an hour for two hours straight. I’ll have quite a few for an hour sometimes (not too often), then they will disappear. Otherwise I just have random ones here and there a couple times a day. Fun.

  31. Astrid says:

I can’t wait to see your “audition”, Tina. Sounds like a fun opportunity. You have my support. 1000%. Yes, I meant the extra 0 in that.
I have a hard time when things don’t go as planned. For example, I have been trying to sell some clothes to a thrift store and the two times I have taken the bus all the way there it has been closed. When it was supposed to be open. Things do happen for a reason, though!

  32. Our plans almost got ruined last night, too. We had a Christmas party to attend across town and my husband was afraid the driving conditions were too bad to go. But I’m from northern Michigan and I told him I’d driven in much worse. We went to the party. 🙂 Sorry your plans got ruined.
I will be back later to comment on your post. Good luck!

  33. I’m really working on my “acceptance” when it comes to weather. I am trying to apply my philosophy about accepting life’s twists and turns to the freezing temps and slick streets and it’s tough! I hate winter! But I’m hating it slightly less this year so it’s progress!

  34. When my sister and I were in Italy this spring, the volcano ash from Iceland completely obliterated our plans. It was the worst 24 hours of my life, having no idea what to do! All ended well, though, and France was more than an apprecaited retreat 🙂
Sorry about your plans, though. They should have put out a notice or something or announced it was cancelled.

  35. Holly says:

I hope you are feeling okay, Tina! Early contractions like that must be so scary. I’m praying for you!

  36. Praying for you and the little guy! Each day that goes by he’s getting bigger and stronger – no doubt that everything will be okay 🙂

  37. Julie says:

Well, it once poured during a marathon I ran, and I once lost a day of my vacation to NYC due to inclement weather. But I tried to take these things in stride — as they say, you can’t control the weather. So I actually did well in my marathon and had fun being stuck in St. Louis seeing snow for the first time and making snowmen with my best bud and sister. Gotta make out of it what you can!

Here’s hoping the little guy will stay tucked away for a couple more weeks…

  38. Katie H says:

Yikes- those contractions sound scary. I am glad you guys are okay now!

  39. Kristi says:

I love your knee high socks!! They are too cute.

  40. Caroline says:

Hopefully those contractions were a fluke! I’m sure you’re taking great care of yourself, so just keep it up and everything will work out just fine.

As for weather ruining plans .. my freshman year of college I was flying home to Florida for Christmas break and my connecting flight was cancelled due to snow. I had to spend the night in Baltimore all by myself. So scary at the time!

    • Tina says:

Yea, they went away not too long after we got home and I laid down thank goodness. I have at least once a week where one night they just happen a lot more and stronger.

  41. Last year we pretty much had our plans cancelled every weekend due to snow. It got pretty annoying.

Your socks are super cute though 🙂

  42. Good luck w/ your audition!

Yes, last year in Oklahoma City, we had a terrible ice storm that left The Lover stranded in another city. He finally got home at 430 AM on Christmas day. I was so worried but thankfully he made it safe and sound. We had to post-pone Christmas w/ both sides but that’s ok. We were just happy he made it home safely!

  43. Ela says:

Lovely coat you got your husband! And sometimes things go wrong regardless… M’s hat is adorable, btw, and so are your sock!

We have had to miss things due to being snowed in here, and when we were in HI, we had planned a several day camping trip climbing one of the two big mountain peaks there. We couldn’t do it because a big storm hit and there was torrential rain to such an extent that all the roads were closed, so even if we were thinking of being that macho/stupid, we couldn’t have!

My husband got me a new coat for Xmas and let me have it early too – just mentioned that in my blog too. Supergood idea. Will try to look back in tonight
    love
    Ela

  44. Allie says:

I’m sorry about the early contractions and the plans going haywire! I love your attitude though, God has better plans :D. Baby B is just excited I guess haha. Last year I wanted to go ice skating all winter and I finally headed to the rink but it was closed because too much snow fell on the roof and it had a ‘chance’ it would collapse. . ugh! Haha, at least I was safe!

  45. Shannon says:

Slow down Baby B! We can’t wait to meet you, but its too early to be giving your mom contractions!

  46. Lee says:

Seriously? It didn’t even snow yesterday besides a few flurries. That sucks!

  47. chelsey says:

That stinks that it was closed! Take it easy and put those cute striped socks up on the couch!

  48. It is FRIGID! You know how Georgians are… one flurry and schools close and the grocery store is out of beer and bread. 🙂

  49. barb g says:

Wow I wish I could be one of the bloggers for the gear program you mentioned. I’m on Nutrisystem D now so I’m looking for more sponsors for lifestyle, health, weight control right now to make me do better at losing weight. barb g. directorylanesuperstore(at)gmail.com
