It Was A “Good” Day

Today rejuvenated me. I felt more like myself than I have in awhile and got into a healthy groove through the day. I began the day with a delicious bowl of oats.


What else is new? Oats are the perfect breakfast in my eyes. Today’s combo featured oats, cinnamon, peanut butter, dried pineapple, and fresh blueberries. Hearty, yet refreshing at the same time.

Then, after a bit of chill time in the morning, I knocked out a few to-dos. I went to the bank to deposit our Christmas money and to the store (again) to pick up a few last minute items for our hospital bag, which I finished packing today.

Pause for lunch – an Amy’s burrito and a Honeycrisp apple.


I then proceeded to tackle laundry and sweeping the downstairs hardwood floors. I also caught up on blogging stuff – comments, emails, etc. Nothing can beat getting things accomplished after a few days. Except maybe a break for a cup of hot cocoa and one of the last Super Charge Me cookies from Gabriela.


Or a workout. Having the option to workout again has not gotten old. Yesterday I opted for a TurboJam workout. It started contractions…but they didn’t last. Today, we went for a long and hilly walk as a family.




Then, I prepped another simple and delicious soup dinner. I prefer cooking up a soup or chili over anything else. I adapted this recipe from a recent issue of Shape.

  • 3 cups low sodium vegetable broth
  • 1 can no-salt-added diced tomatoes
  • 1 bag Italian/Tuscan style frozen mixed veggies
  • 1 can kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 3-4 cups fresh baby spinach leaves

Place broth, tomatoes, and frozen veggies in a pot over medium-heat. Cover pan and cook until vegetables begin to soften. Add beans and cook until mixture slightly simmering, heated through. Finally, add the spinach and cover the pot until the spinach wilts. Serve hot.


It capped off my “good” day. And although I use “good” to describe my day, I do not use it with the same definitions I used to place on that word. In the past, a “good” day would be one where I ate healthy foods and completed a workout. I certainly did those things today, but they are not what qualify my day as a “good” one. I classify my day in the “good” category because I honored my body. I ate what sounded appealing. I moved my body because I love doing so. I spent time with loved ones and some down time for myself and my interests. Food and workouts do not make a day “good” or “bad”. Living life and doing what leaves you with energy, joy, a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, etc make up a “good” day. I hope you had one yourself!

Question of the evening – How do you classify a “good” day? Do workouts and diet play into that? How much? I do think they have a role because they affect mood, energy, quality of life, etc…but shouldn’t be the sole basis.

    Oats are absolutely the most perfect breakfast! I eat them every single day!
    Diet and exercise definitely factor in to a “good day”. In fact, they are quite a huge element. How I eat affects how my body feels which, in turn, affects my mood. Eating well is the best recipe for a good day!

      You should! It’s so easy, healthy (with the right ingredients), delicious, and versatile. Plus, makes great leftovers. Always a plus in my book!

    Diet is definitely a factor in my days. I KNOW that I don’t always eat right, and I can tell. If I’ve had too much sugar, not enough healthy stuff, etc. — if I’m getting headaches or feeling dizziness or sleepiness, I know I need to eat something more.

    As far as my “good days,” um… Yesterday was a good day! Helped at a wedding, and then spent the rest of the night with the college girls, K’s boyfriend, and the youth pastor. Played a game, had good food, watched a few movies… Yep, good day. 🙂

  4. Work that baby out Tina! It is a whole package thing for me with good. Lately, I have not had that many “good” days, but I am working to change that in the new year. I have to work out and eat right, but I also want other things to be good…like work! I think I put too much pressure on the meaning of good and need to learn to let things go…another thing I need to work on for the new year.

  5. Eating and exercising do play into whether or not I have a good or bad day, but I’m actually working on changing that. I have other valuable things to do than spend my life in the gym, and I’m trying to find a balance between making exercise a priority and becoming anxious if I choose not to go to the gym one day.

    I classify a “good day” by having that “at peace” feeling at the end of it. Just content!

    Soups & chilis make me feel so good, and they’re fun to make too! I can stuff so many veggies & other good things in them. Glad you had a good day! A good day for me is usually being productive and mainly just being happy at the end of the day.

    I’m glad you had a good day. 🙂 I usually have a good day when I’ve gotten some sort of exercise (from the gym to walking the dog or just cleaning the house) but also when I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot and spent time with people that make me happy/laugh.

    I love your last paragraph! Diet and exercise do somewhat play a role in what I consider to be a good day. I am working towards getting away from that mindset though because sometimes I let them play too big of a role. Also, getting a lot done and having fun= a good day for me 🙂

  16. well said! good days are when i’m happy and everyone around me is too. days that are productive with minimal stress. i’ve had plenty of days where i work out and eat perfect, but are no where near good. you look great and so happy on that walk!

    A good day is when I am accepting of myself and keep a positive attitue about everything in my life. I tend to lose sight of how many things I am blessed with, so when I have a “good day” it shows!

  20. Oats are definitely my favorite breakfast! I would define a good day as a happy day! If I end the day feeling happy and satisfied, it is a good day. I agree that food choices and exercise do play into that, but I can have a good day even if I don’t workout or if I splurge on a cookie. 🙂

      And pineapple is apparently a labor inducing food. I eat it because I love it, but heck…if it does ANYTHING to help me progress down below, I’m good with that too. 😉

    Yes, both factor into what is or isn’t a good day for me. But mostly it is cumulative.

    A good day is definitely cumulative. Its all about good food, a good sweat, and overall productivity.

  27. I was really excited as I scrolled to the top of your post, I thought that your oats were mac and cheese at first … ha ha. But the oats do indeed look good too! Glad you had a good day! Minus being sick, I had a fairly good day. I also think a good day includes getting out there and doing something you love plus eating well. But it also includes chocolate, peanut butter, and something else you love. I didn’t feel well last night so when we went to the pharmacy we stopped at Wendy’s on the way home for a Frosty! Yay!

    My ‘good’ days are definitely ones where I honour my body, on all levels. Especially honouring my hunger, which I have difficulty doing sometimes. I also feel great when I exercise, so most of my ‘good’ days land on days where I’ve exercised simply because of that… though working out definitely isn’t necessary to feel ‘good’. (Anymore at least!)

  29. Love your definition of a good day! To be completely honest I’m still trying to transition in my definition of a good day. It’s always been about working out and eating healthy (to the exclusion of anything else) but I’m trying to focus more on all the other aspects of life. I think I’m getting better, but not totally there yet. Thanks for the inspiration!

  31. Love oats for breakfast – I think they are the most filling and satisfying! For me, a good day is feeling good about myself and being happy – whether it includes exercise, healthy food or indulgent food 🙂

  32. A good day really depends on my mood. If I eat well and exercise it definitely ups my mood, but I can be crabby and still eat well and exercise, making it a not good day. Time with family always makes it a good day.

    I think that exercise and eating well does make my day “good”. Mainly because I use exercise as a healthy way to keep my depression at bay. I have more energy, etc. But, if I miss a workout or eat something unhealthy, I do not necessarily categorize that day as a “bad” day. My days that I work out and eat healthy are just much more positive… and I will add in that if I do not get my quiet time with the Lord in the mornings my day isn’t as good either. All of these things have become such habits that my day does not feel complete without them!
