What is That?!?!

Posted: February 7, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Evening, my friends!! Thank you all for the supportive comments in my last post. Please note that if you ever expressed concern about my workouts, it never angered me. I really do appreciate the love from each of you. Like I mentioned, I wrote that post simply to clarify to everyone out there I am listening and caring for my body.

So, this morning started off with both kiddos up at 6:30. I had a brief moment of frustration because it meant I lost my morning quiet time, but I recovered quickly. I had a good night’s sleep and who can be frustrated at spending time with these two adorable faces?

makenzie read baby b activity mat

I did not extend the same courtesy to my brand new jar of Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter, though…

dark chocolate dreams dcd mold

What is that?!?! I think its mold…but it doesn’t completely look mold-ish. Either way I know I’m not eating it! I already threw away my grocery receipt from the week too. Will I still be able to return it? I better! I used my special $1 off coupon!

The rest of the day went smoothly enough. Kids napped well. We played lots. My afternoon snack redeemed my breakfast disappointment.

mango chobani

Mango Chobani may have just overtaken pineapple as my favorite flavor. I want to mix the two together! Imagine the flavor explosion.

Good things continued with a quick visit from my friend Danielle. She brought us over another care meal. Yes. We’re loved in these parts. 😉

spaghetti casserole

And well fed. That would be a spaghetti casserole with some salad. Tasted good.

Question of the Evening – Do you hold on to grocery receipts? I never do. I sure hope I can still return that PB for another jar.

UPDATE: PB&Co responded in the comments section. What we saw is in fact oil separation and recrystallization of the cocoa butter. I did question its appearance as mold because I  had honestly never seen something like this in my numerous PB&Co purchases. That is what concerned me. So, now we all know. And I knew I would never stop purchasing my beloved PB from this one instance. The stuff is good!

  1. Not only can and SHOULD you return it without a receipt (and yes, they will let you)
You need to email PB&Co a copy of this post/link and SHOW THEM what is growing in their food. Lawsuit much? Not to be that way…but that is seriously wrong and unsafe!!!

From your earlier post…do your thing, workout as you see fit, you are a big girl and you know what you’re doing 🙂

  2. I have a sickness of holding onto all kinds of receipts waaaaay beyond the logical date to toss them out.

  3. Brooke says:

i always put groceries on my credit card, and i save the receipt until i reconcile it against my monthly statement. i would have never thought to save it becaused of spoiled goods.

  4. that is so bizarre! oh my, you definitely should contact pb&co asap!

glad you’re working through your workout ruts– you deserve some peace of mind.

also, your kids are SO SO beautiful.

  5. Gross! I’d definitely email the company, they need to know quickly if there is a problem with their product before someone gets sick from it.

  6. This happened to me too with this same exact PB. I have no idea what it is either. I’m interested to find out though…yuck!

  7. Amy Lauren says:

I would let PB&Co know about it, honestly. Even if the store does take it back, they have a big social media/online presence and will most likely send you a free coupon or replace it for you or something. I think they really take pride in their PB.

But trust me… that dark chocolate dreams one is really good :). Love it and the white chocolate! And the pics of the kids are exceptionally cute!

    A.L.

  8. Nooo, not PB&Co! Ew, that picture gives me the chills…

  9. Errign says:

Blegh on whatever’s growin’ in your dark chocolate dreams!

I sometimes keep receipts for a week or two, but no, I don’t generally hold on to them. 🙂

  10. I never hold onto receipts either. If you really wanted to you probably could contact the company and they may send you a free jar!

  11. I never hold onto receipts for anything, it’s terrible, really. I know my grocery store is really, really good about taking stuff back – they want to keep the customers happy! I would try to exchange it and contact the company – maybe you’ll get a free jar out of the deal 🙂

It does kind of look like mold…was the seal broken? Otherwise it seems like maybe there was a problem in the packing plant. Like I know. I’m going to stop typing now!

  12. i don’t hold on to grocery receipts – i don’t think i’ve ever returned anything to a supermarket.

that being said, YES return that! i’ve taken my fair share of microbiology classes in my lifetime and that is most certainly bacterial colonies growing on your pb.

    you don’t want that!

  13. Holly says:

I checked on the PB&Co website (just to see the ingredients of the Dark Chocolate PB). I’ve had this same thing happen with Nutella. The oils used to stabilize the product (palm, coconut, nasty hydrogenated) sometimes separate from the rest of the mixture when the product isn’t stored properly. (I.e. if you leave a jar of nutella in the car, in the summer, it gets super melty. When it re-solidifies, sometimes it doesn’t solidify into a homogenous mixture)
So, in my experience with Nutella- you’re fine to eat it, the oils have just separated!

    • Tina says:

That’s really interesting. I did wonder if it was something like that because it doesn’t quite look like mold…but I still think I’ll take the safe route and exchange it for a fresh jar if possible. 😉

  14. Oh no! I wonder what that is? I just received their line of products to review, and nothing was lingering on mine. I’m sure the second the company sees that, they will be more than willing to give you a new jar!

  15. I agree with contacting PB&Co. They need to know.

As for returning it you should have no problem. I had strawberries that molded after a day and took it back without a receipt no problem. Ask to speak to the store manager if the customer service person doesn’t know if they can.

  16. Lauren says:

Oh no! That’s my fav PB & Co flavor too.
I need to try all these new Chobani flavors I keep seeing – mango sounds spectacular!

  17. It looks a bit like fats congealing together on top? If it is, it’s still fine.

I don’t usually save receipts for more than a day or 2 after I look over them. I’ve only returned one grocery item, though, and it was that day. I had bought a steak and when we opened the package and turned it over, it was GREEN. I immediately went back to the store, and THEY were so disgusted that they refunded the money AND gave us a new steak. Way it should be.

  18. Ew ew ew that’s gross. I kind of agree with a few of the other commenters that it COULD be the fat resolidifying, but either way, the bubbles look like my skin when I had shingles. Ick!

  19. Allie says:

I love seeing photos of Baby B and little M 🙂 So adorable! Mago Greek yogurt sounds delicious!! Hope you have a nice evening !!

  20. EWWWWWW!! that’s so gross looking that I just have to keep gawking at it! I have a wee problem 😛 Funny thing is, I can never throw anything away, but I always get rid of receipts and many times end up needing them harhar

  21. Ewwww! I never hold onto receipts…but I think this inspired me to start!

  22. Michelle says:

Gross (on the PB – not the cutie kids)! I usually keep receipts, but not really on purpose.

As for the workout stuff — as long as you are listening to your body then go you!

  23. Ick – you should definitely get your money back! I would be surprised if they didn’t give it to you. The company itself might even give you something more.
Your kids are precious! I imagine it would be hard to be frustrated with them around 🙂

  24. I think I would have come unglued about the PB! I don’t ever hold onto grocery receipts either. May need to rethink that. Sure hope they let you return/exchange it.

  25. Oh GOSH– gross!!! That would piss me off!

  26. Helen says:

I never save grocery receipts but the store shouldn’t give you any hassle with that growth. You need to contact the company as well.

I missed your earlier post so I have to catch up on it, but I have complete confidence in the fact that you know your body and know what’s best for you.

  27. My husband saves every grocery receipt. He hangs them on the door and there they stay for WEEKS! It annoys me until we need to return something. 🙂

  28. Oh my gosh, I’d be so sad to find that in my PB! And no, I never keep grocery receipts.

Time for some new PB =)

  29. Yikes! I just my first jar of Dark Chocolate Dreams today… I hope it doesn’t look like that when I open it! 😉

  30. Lee says:

Gross! I would definitely try to return it. I always throw away my receipts too.

  31. Oh, the humanity!

Depending on where you got it, you might be able to return it and chalk it up as a bad item. I really try to save my grocery receipt if until I open/use everything on there (though not a normal habit, I’m sure).

  32. Kat says:

We usually save our receipts for about a week, but only because Marcus is busy putting them into our budget spreadsheet. That being said, I’m pretty sure when you find that sort of thing going on in there, you can just bring it back.

  33. I hope they take the peanut butter back! I’m horrible at keeping grocery store receipts….I keep receipts for everything else it seems like!:)

  34. Jolene says:

ugh! I hope you can return it! I bet you can, as long as it’s an even exchange 🙂

  35. Cecilia says:

I’m have a major in microbiology. And those looks like it’s bacterial colonies growing on your pb. Trust me, it looks exactly like the bacterial cultures (smooth, circular, colonial, slightly raised) that we grow on agar plates …. eek, totally off putting!

  36. holy funky town on the peanut butter. they better take it back! i just caught up on your blogariffic. i have missed you! and i love how open and honest you ALWAYS are in your posts. the last one was particularly refreshing. that’s why you are one of my favorite bloggers 🙂 love ya!

  37. Ugh…I hate that! I had a bad run with some Greek yogurts awhile back. I got two that both had mold in them, returned them and got two totally different flavors (double check the date) and they were moldy too! Grrrrrr!

  38. I have no idea what that is either! Did you refrigerate it? You shouldn’t really have to though…
I don’t keep grocery receipts, but I do look at them once I get home just to make sure everything rang up correctly. A little too late I guess. Hope you get your mystery solved.

  39. I would cry if that was in my DCD!!!

  40. I think it is crystallized sugar. I found that on the WCW container I bought and I mixed it up and it was fine. I mean nothing happened to me, I’m still alive so I guess that’s a good thing lol.
Hope you get your money back though!

  41. Ewww… moldy PB is creepy. I never save my receipts, but have found that grocery stores are great about taking item back.

  42. ah sorry about the PB- what a bummer. i never save my receipts, either.

  43. I keep all receipts. They’re filed by month. It’s sad. 🙁

  44. I always throw away my receipts from the grocery store.

That almost looks like hard oil, but that would make any sense. I’d definitely throw that sucker away. How disappointing.

And btw – my boyfriend was reading over my shoulder and all he said was “aww, those are cute kids”. 🙂

  45. Stephanie says:

O gosh. TAKE IT BACK! 🙂 lol…but bring your cuties with you…no one can refuse you when you have them around!

  46. I never saved any receipts until I noticed my boyfriend saving ALL of his. Now, I save mine, too. I have yet to need them, but he tells me it is a good habit.

  47. I would CERTAINLY contact PB&Co. My correspondence with them in the past has always been lovely, and I’m sure they would work to resolve your issue even if the grocery store won’t (which they should anyway!).

  48. That looks like separated oils or something — weird! I keep my receipts for awhile, some I keep forever for no reason at all, lol. The store should let you exchange it, though. Most are courteous like that.

I LOVE pasta on a plate with salad, In fact, I make it a point to mix them. 🙂

  49. allison says:

Ewww! Not cool!! they better take it back! Im sure they will if you always shop there and they know you.

I always “try” to keep my receipts and see how much i spend but i never have time to sit down and organize them:/

  50. Grocery stores are usually pretty good with that kind of stuff for returning-that’s some funky pb!!!
