Taco Night & Scale Update
Posted: April 4, 2011 at 8:22 pmAlmost every week we have a “taco night” in our house. It gives me a break from having to think too much in the kitchen. Tonight called for tacos. I had a busy day that all started at the gym. I switched up my workout routine because, well, I felt like it and wanted a weight lifting schedule that would allow my rest days to go back to Sundays. We have lots of busy weekends coming up and I know fitting in workouts both days isn’t reasonable.
Today called for a light push workout. I did the following 5 moves in a circuit that took about 15 minutes to run through 3 times.
Push-Ups | 10 on toes, 5 on knees |
Mountain Climbers | 20 per leg |
Incline Dumbbell Flyes | 10 reps |
Squat Jumps | 15 reps |
Overhead Tricep Extensions | 10 reps |
I then followed up with a 45 minute spinning class that included LOTS of hills. Ouch!
I came home to a long list of to-dos, such as laundry and cleaning, but I could not ignore the weather calling me outside. Simply gorgeous here today! I spent one of Braedon’s naps outdoors with Makenzie playing ball, drawing with sidewalk chalk, and driving around in her little car. It felt good to get out in the warm sun.
Unfortunately the to-dos didn’t disappear, so a large portion of the afternoon included things like vacuuming and folding laundry. In between rounds of checking in on the sick husband. Yep. I had three to care for today. No surprise that when dinner time rolled around, I turned to “taco night”.
Who cares if it’s an easy meal when it includes things like fire roasted salsa and avocado? I think if you add avocado or salsa to any savory dish, you have a winning combo. I feel the same about goat cheese and hummus. I wonder how a goat cheese, hummus, avocado, and salsa wrap would taste? 😉
Before I wrap up this post, I did want to touch base on something. I had a recent question about how the whole “weighing but not knowing my actual weight” thing is going. To put it simply…I’m loving it! I have no desire to know my weight and don’t feel caught up with numbers or obsessive over the scale at all. However, knowing that I have a weigh-in each Saturday morning helps hold me accountable and keeps me mindful of my goals. I find myself making steady progress and the weekly confirmation of my progress keeps me motivated. I still don’t use the scale as my only tool (check my Progress Posts), but it does serve a purpose to help me with my Body After Baby progress. I feel myself getting closer and closer to my “happy place”…although, no doubt, I am already so happy with the strength, health, and vitality my body has shown me. I truly feel amazing. 🙂
- What could you add to any savory meal and likely love it?

So glad that is working for you with the weight thing! It is really such a good idea.
We had a taco night in my house growing up, and we still have one here too! We switch it up with beef and chicken sometimes. Delicious and easy!
Sounds like a kick booty workout! Love the push circuit.
Hope the husband feels better soon 🙂
We have taco night when dinner calls for something easy, too.
I’m with you on avocados & salsa – so good on anything! 🙂
Can I just say I hate mountain climbers? Ok, said it LOL. Let’s see, one thing to add…probably almost always jalapenos 😉
I forgot how much I hate them too until trying them. Man, are they hard!
Such a beautiful day outside!!! Playing outside with M sounds like so much fun.I could add hummus to any meal and it would be fantastic.
Guac, jalapeno salsa, and sour cream — works on soooo many of my meals! ok so I really love mex =)
p and I did taco night last night! love. it! <3
Mmm those tacos sound great. I agree with the avocado and salsa combo. No wonder I eat at Chipotle at least once a week!
goat cheese for sure 🙂 and annies goddess dressing!
Love that dressing! It really is so good added to so many things.
We are the same way — we have tacos when I don’t have anything else planned. It was my favorite meal growing up and I still love it!
Salsa or hummus and it’s a winner to me! We haven’t done tacos in forever. Now I want to. I hope your boys feel better.
I LOVE tacos, or fajitas, or both! So easy too and yumtastic! BTW, was it you who mentioned (maybe on twitter or on the blog) how fantastic the Trader Joe’s white bean hummus is?? I discovered it this weekend and am OBESSED! SO GOOD! The little things right?? PS. So glad you are loving the not knowing your weight thing, no need for the number, none!!
Yep. That was me. 🙂 It’s good, huh?!
You know, we only have taco night once a month. We definitely need to have it more often. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂
I think adding marinara sauce to many dishes just makes them so satisfying and comforting.
It’s hard to pick just ONE thing, but I think Parmesan cheese makes just about everything taste better.
I love your outdoor photos–gorgeous!
I love having weekly taco nights, sometimes instead of a tortilla I’ll make brown rice and do a mexican bowl!
Love taco night 🙂 Its one of my favorite meals!
Taco night sounds awesome! Keith and I were on a big taco kick for a long time but then it kind of died because I dont’ remember the last time we had tacos. Thanks for the reminder!!
I’m pretty sure we have either burritos or fajitas once a week with fresh guacamole! So simple and so good. Salsa, guac, and carbs is a no-fail combination.
I love taco night! My husband and I have taco night at least once a week, sometimes once every other week. It’s so easy and quick. I usually end up with a taco salad. That guarantees lots of veggies and healthy things, with the lettuce, salsa, peppers and onions and refried beans . . . and taco meat of course. 🙂
I love taco nights, so laid back and fun! 🙂
I love taco nights too! We always keep the ingredients for tacos in our pantry. They come together so quickly that they are perfect for a week night meal!
I could probably add bacon to any savory meal and probably love it! I know it’s not the healthiest choice but sure is delicious!!
I love all your ideas for workouts. Quick question though, how do you decide what to do? I have been working out regularly for about 4 years now but rely solely on DVDs or programs at the gym or books that I read. I am too afraid to make up my own routine out of fear that it won’t have the desired results or I might hurt myself. How do you get past that?
Thanks for any advice you can give!
When I first started I kind of mixed and matched moves I liked from DVDs or books I read. Now, I have a master list of exercises for each body part and pick and choose for each workout. I did a post before on how I make my weight training plans. You can find it here – http://www.faithfitnessfun.com/7411/how-i-create-strength-training-plans/
Hope that helps!
I definitely agree about avocado. Makes everything yummy. I also have a knack for adding hot sauce to pretty much every thing. And cheese.
oh girl, it’s all about RANCH. i could add that to just about everything. every.single.thing. yum!
You may have to stop being my friend. The only time I like ranch is when pregnant. 🙁
Cheese! It makes everything better:)
I love the weight routine you put up! I will have to try it out this week!
Can I just say for the billionth time…. I love your view of the scale. I wish everyone could use the scale as a tool instead of an absolute!
Aw, thanks! I’ve been down the obsessive route and knew I didn’t want to go back. I still wanted it as a tool, though, so its nice to have found a happy medium. 🙂
I’m always up for an impromptu fiesta! 🙂
Also, I admire your ability to not be a slave to the scale…sometimes that mean monster just creeps up on you! I think I might try your weighing-without-knowing idea though (so smart)..hopefully it will keep the monster at bay for me.
I agree that salsa makes everything better!
I’ve started weighing myself a couple times a week, even though for a long time, I did it maybe a couple times a month (or less). I pretty much *know* when I’m going to weigh more based on how I feel otherwise.
Love Taco night, have even tried it with ground turkey:))
Love avocados & salsa
That’s easy! Feta cheese! I am absolutely convinced that feta tastes good on anything! 🙂
That’s how I feel about goat cheese. And blue cheese. Mmmm….stinky cheese!
Taco nights are the best! I think we have them at least once a week too! It’s an awesome “go-to” dinner! 🙂
I could add dried fruit to any savory meal and love it 🙂 In fact, I do as often as I can!
Hummus and avocado is AMAZING together if you haven’t tried it. So, so, so good. I bet goat cheese in that combo would make it even better!!
We just had a taco night this weekend – it was fun!
I think I could add pickles to almost anything – I love them!! 🙂
yea for taco night. I love anything with avocado and salsa. Love the park pictures, such a beautiful scenery.
I think your wiegh in concept is brilliant! great for mental health.
My new favorite thing is chili powder – it makes everything taste so good! Oh and you can’t go wrong with avocados. 🙂
Your little girl is adorable, what a cutie! 🙂 I really like your attitude toward weighing yourself and post baby progress, what a great example for others.
I would say hummus is my savory addition of choice:)
I miss taco nights. My boys used to eat them and then, boom, suddenly they don’t like them anymore. What’s with that!! I used to have mine on a salad and everyone was happy.
So I had to laugh because my dinner out with friends this weekend was a Groupon meal:) Loved that the restaurant let each couple use one! Does your city participate in restaurants.com? They have great deals too.
They do but none of the restaurants are good and they ALWAYS have crazy stipulations on when you can use them. We never get the chance to go out on like a Thursday night which seems to be the only night they’re ever good for!
Tacos are totally my go-to dinner too. They can’t be beat when you don’t have a lot of time and/or energy but still want a healthy, satisfying, and delicious meal!
I do a similar sandwich to what you described! It is hummus on one side of a pita, avocado smushed on the other, feta, tomato, cucumber, and roasted red pepper. Ok, not EXACTLY right, but if you call tomato, cucumber and the red pepper salsa…it works. And is my favorite.
That does sound INSANELY good!
Add cheese on anything and I am good 🙂
Glad to hear the scale/weighing thing is going so well for you! I LOVE taco nights – I need to add them into my meals more often!
I love your approach to the scale! I recently got rid of mine and I couldn’t be happier not knowing the number! I’m able to use other means of determining my health and weight without being fixated on a number 🙂
Chickpeas and cheese 🙂 I stopped weighing myself when I was gaining and I think I am perfectly ok with it 😉
Ah, the beloved taco night. In my house our ‘taco night’ is usually any left overs! LOL. I am glad you are having a good body relationship with the scale and yourself. I think you look awesome 🙂 Enjoy the warm weather for me !
The picture of your day outside with M are precious. It’s always so refreshing for children to be outside! I could add ketchup to any single savory meal and still adore it. And when I say “any” I really mean it 🙂
Tacos go over well here too.
I love garlic in a savory meal.
I think that is so awesome that you are not weighing yourself. I hope to get to that point. I use to weigh myself almost everyday..you become obsessed and it consumes you. I am so much better now but I hope to eventually free myself from the scale.
Well, I DO weigh in once a week, but have the husband check it. I don’t look, then he just tells me the net gain/loss. I know last week I lost .6 lbs for example…but have not a clue how much that means I weigh. Best of both worlds! I can track, but not get obsessive on weighing X amount.
I LOVE the idea of not weighing myself, but I don’t know if I have to self-control to do it! Maybe that should be my challenge for the next week – to see if I can go a week without weighing myself and just judging on how I feel!
I think your weigh ins are SUCH a genius idea. Not knowing my weight is one of the best things I’ve done for myself, but its a bit of a problem at times like now when I need to drop a few pounds. I have no idea how much needs to go, or how to track my progress.
