Savannah, Here I Come!

Posted: April 27, 2011 at 8:04 am

I have had some stellar runs recently. First up, I reached a new PDR (personal distance record) this past Saturday on my long run. I had to wait to head out for my run until mid-afternoon during nap time. My motivation had started waning and the increasing temperatures worried me. I knew I would regret not going, so I got myself out the door and to the trail. Then, I promptly pulled out the best run I have had to date.

IMGP0854

I ended up running SEVEN miles in 1:04:07!! I kind of surprised myself with this run.

  • Mile 1 = 9:23
  • Mile 2 = 9:29
  • Mile 3 = 9:28
  • Mile 4 = 9:02
  • Mile 5 = 8:41
  • Mile 6 = 8:57
  • Mile 7 = 9:03
  • Average = 9:09

I had that runner high feeling the entire time and felt like I could have gone for even longer. I posted on Facebook (bec Facebook friends get info like this early) that I used to think people who ran 7 miles for fun were crazyโ€ฆand now Iโ€™m one of them. ๐Ÿ˜€

Then, I continued the great run trend with my workout yesterday. I have decided for my own sanity and to best fit our familyโ€™s schedules that I will complete one of my runs each week on the treadmill so I can finish it along with my morning weights workout. To keep myself from keeling over with treadmill boredom, I have deemed that workout a โ€œspeed work sessionโ€ so I can play around with numbers and have some fun with intervals.

Yesterday I completed a speed work workout I picked up from Runners Worldโ€™s Smart Coach program I took a quick peek at a couple days ago.

  • 1 mile @ 6.0 mph (10 min pace)
  • 3x through - 0.5 mile @ 7.8 mph (7:42 min pace) followed with 0.25 mile @ 6.0 (10 min pace)
  • 6.0 mph (10 min pace) until I reached 35 minutes

The speed work started off not feeling like too much of a challenge, but by the third and final half mile at 7:42 pace I huffed and puffed profusely. I actually had fun pushing through such a challenging run. Who knew I would enjoy speed work so much?

All this running mumbo jumbo is to say that I have certainly been feeling inspired in the running department lately. And that led to thisโ€ฆ

half registration

half email confirmation

Itโ€™s official!!! Savannah, here I come. I WILL be ready to rock and roll! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I also wanted to let you all know that I decided to focus solely on this half marathon this year. I believe that physically I could do the second half marathon I considered, but I really want a super fun race like this to go down as my first half marathon memory. I look forward to racing with some other awesome blogger friends, having a trip with my husband, and accomplishing something I never thought possible. I canโ€™t wait! And I hope you will join me through the ups and downs of training. I know I will need you!

  • Whatโ€™s something exciting youโ€™ve experienced recently?

  7. 7 miles?!?! You are awesome! Running is so much fun when you’re riding the endorphin wave. You’ve definitely inspired me to lace up my sneakers this afternoon! ๐Ÿ™‚
    Have a great day!!

  8. Congrats girl!!! I think my half marathon this year ranks really high up there for me on the achievement scale. Something I never in a million years thought I was capable of. And I’m that crazy person who runs 9 miles for fun and considers my 6-milers akin to a 3-miler. Last year, I would have thought you were high if you’d told me that’s how it’d be now.

  9. marcia says:

  35. Congrats on the half marathon sign up! I was so nervous when I signed up for my first last October but now I’m hooked. ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m sure you will be too!

I too remember being amazed when I first ran 7 miles. There’s something magical about that number.

  36. That is so exciting! I know you’re going to rock it! I am looking forward to following your training and read all about the race! ๐Ÿ™‚

Starting my blog was pretty exciting as it’s still been less than a month, goodness me it seems like longer! I’m really excited that my husband is applying to jobs all around the country because I’m ready to live in and explore a new city/town! ๐Ÿ™‚

Congrats on the 7 and good luck in Savannah. It is such a beautiful city, I have always wanted to visit in person. I have seen photos from family members that have been, it is one of my goals in life to visit….isn’t that too funny!

Not too funny at all. I ADORE Savannah. I can’t wait to get to visit it again. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures to share here. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Tina says:

If it’s more towards the end of June you would still have 10+ weeks to train which I think is certainly doable. ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. Wahoo!! Thats so exciting.

Amazing job on the run. You’re clearly a natural. ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. That is awesome – you are such a little runner! I can’t imagine doing 7 miles that quickly – WOO!

  45. Lauren says:

Congrats on your distance & speed run – that’s speedy! I’m so excited to read about your half marathon training, the rock & roll races sound so fun!

  46. I think you will love the Rock n Roll race! I think it’s a great choice for a first half. I did it (in chicago) as my first half in 2010, and I decided to pick a Rock n Roll race as my first full marathon too!

That’s awesome!!! I am running my 1st half marathon at the Savannah Rock n Roll and am so excited…although slightly nervous.

Wow! You are moving right along with your running! Way to go ๐Ÿ™‚ I am NOT a runner but when I have to walk on the treadmill, it bores me to tears! I would much rather be outside.
