A Day In My Food Life

Posted: May 18, 2011 at 9:10 am

You all know that I don’t regularly blog all of my eats. I will share current obsessions (like that whole goat cheese phase). I will share recipes/meals I mix up that I simply cannot keep to myself and believe you may find worth reading. I will share new things I try or delicious meals I experience amidst other activities, like dining out or social events.

Even though I don’t share regularly, I still love to share on occasion. So when requested to share a typical day of my eats after my recent Body After Baby progress post, I decided to oblige. Try to contain your excitement at seeing every morsel of food that went into my mouth yesterday. I know you wait with bated breath.

Breakfast @ 9:30 am – Typical Oats Breakfast

cocoraisinpboats

Oats made with almond milk and splash of maple syrup for sweetener. Topped with 1.5 tablespoons White Chocolate Wonderful peanut butter, coconut, and raisins. Mornings with sick children get away from me. I devoured this bowl all too quickly and thoroughly missed it upon my last bite. As always…save the best for last!

 last bite

Lunch @ 12:20 pm – Taco Night Leftovers

 IMGP1186 IMGP1190

I loaded up a whole wheat tortilla with mashed up black beans, corn, salsa, cheese, and a bit of taco meat. All that was missing was avocado – which sadly looked all bad at the store this week. A taco without avocado is just not the same. I had a sliced up mango and large carrot on the side. With my favorite hummus for carrot dippage. Roasted Pine Nut = get your hands on it. Now.

Nap Time, Chill Time Pick-Me-Up @ 2:00 pm

IMGP1195

Iced coffee always makes an appearance at this time of day. And on days with two sick kids…a Ghiradelli raspberry dark chocolate square needed to come out to play too.

Snack @ 3:30 pm

yogurt on the go 2

A yogurt bowl sounded really, really, really good for my snack. Good decision. Really, really, really good decision. Why? I mixed half a container of mango and half a container of pineapple Chobani together. Oh, yes. I did. See? Really, really, really good decision. Topped off with a sliced banana, Cheerios, berries, and a handful of almonds. I 100% plan on eating the other half of those containers mixed again today.

Dinner @ 7:00 pm – Tofu Veggie Stir-Fry

IMGP7507

I pressed and cubed some tofu and then marinated it in some Newman’s Own Light Sesame Ginger dressing. I baked the tofu for 20 minutes at 350 degrees…because baked tofu rules. While the tofu cooked, I made a stir-fry of veggies: mushrooms, zucchini, onion, and baby corn. Then, just serve it all together as a simple, satisfying, filling dinner. Yum in the tum!

Dessert @ 8:45 pm – Biggest Loser Ice Cream Night

icecreamcookiesandwich

Per the usual Tuesday night tradition with my sister, we watched The Biggest Loser and dined on an ice cream sandwich while chatting away. We mourned the loss of Jillian as a trainer on the show. Jillian kicks butt and that Cara chick just isn’t cutting it. It shall be interesting to see what next season holds. Until then, my sister and I are excited for the finale. I love this little tradition of ours. And not just for the ice cream.

  • What is your favorite flavor of hummus?
  • Do you watch The Biggest Loser? What do you think about Jillian leaving?

  1. Tina, Thanks so much for sharing a typical day of eats.

Looks yummy, healthy, and balanced 🙂

  2. Can I just say that I love that you eat an ice cream sandwich while watching biggest loser?

All your eats for the day look fab!

PS We have a whole bag of those raspberry ghiradelli’s…meep!

  3. Absolutely roasted red pepper hummus…or maybe garlic…or maybe anything stuck in front of me.

I haven’t tried marinating tofu in dressing?! Sounds like such a great idea for a time saver!

  4. Love the yogurt bowl and the leftover tacos for breakfast. My favorite hummus flavor is roasted red pepper. It’s awesome!

  5. I missed the show yesterday but I knew Jillian was leaving. Is Bob leaving too?

I love that you and your sister eat ice cream while watching.

  6. Tina says:

Everything looks so yummy Tina! I have to say that Sabra is by far my favorite brand of hummus…I love the roasted red pepper or the roasted garlic! I bought the original this time and I have to say i’m not feeling it : (

  7. Emily says:

Thanks for sharing! I LOVE my oatmeal at breakfast. I never thought of using syrup to make it sweet. I normally do cinnamon and sugar. I’ll have to try the syrup.

Also, I’ve been wanting to try to cook tofu. I’m glad to hear it’s pretty simple.

I do like The Biggest Loser, but I don’t really car for Jillian (or the two new trainers). I actually wrote about Jillian Here:
    http://inthebetweeneh.blogspot.com/2011/03/review-jillian-michaels.html

I’d be cool with cloning Bob and just having him be the four trainers…as long as he takes his shirt off 🙂

  8. Emily says:

    *care (not “car”)

  9. That hummus does sound good. I love roasted red bell pepper. I had an awesome jalapeno hummus (it was fresh homemade) from a deli on vacation in FL. Sadly they’re now closed.

  10. Thanks for sharing all your good eats! I love seeing your meal/snack ideas because you always use typical foods that most people can find in their own kitchen. I love the yogourt mix – I just had Chobani for the first time last week and I LOVED it!!

  11. Angela says:

Your eating schedule is actually quite similar to mine! I’m a total grazer and need to eat all day. My favourite hummus is just my plain and simple one- sometimes simple is best! But I also love edamame hummus and the roasted red pepper ones!

  12. Lauren says:

Yogurt bowls are making a big appearance in my life lately too! My favorite hummus is homemade, and I made a dessert cookie dough hummus a few months ago that was really good.

  13. Sarah says:

I tried an jalapeno hummus about a month ago. It sounds a little strange, but I could not get enough! That may have been the pregnancy talking, though..

  14. YAY for taco night leftovers! 😛 Looks yummy!

  15. cathy says:

“I love this little tradition of ours. And not just for the ice cream.” – that’s so cool, tina, that you get together with your sister like this. reminds me of when my brother and i always weekly to watch seinfeld and ER!
i didn’t know jillian was leaving (where have i been?!) – thanks for the FYI! i think replacements never are as good as the people of the shoes they’re trying to fill (think tv show characters, etc).

    • Tina says:

We’ve had this little tradition for a few years and I love it. Sister nights are one of my favorite parts of the week.

  16. Your meals all look great! I always think it’s interesting to see what others eat on occassion. And the cookie during the Biggest Loser is hysterical!

  17. I like hummus loaded with garlic! I prefer homemade though since tahini is not my favorite. I hope the little ones feel better soon. It gets so overwhelming with both of them sick and they really don’t understand why they feel that way. I hope you have a better day today Tina!

  18. Mellissa says:

Chipotle from Trader Joes, Guacamole Hummus from a local place in Minneapolis and Roasted Red Pepper from Sabra.

I watched a few minutes of Biggest Looser this season but had a hard time getting into it. It will not be the same

  19. It’s all about the spicy garlic hummus for me! If it makes my breath bad I’ll probably love it 😉

  20. Look at all that yummy food! I love tofu and finding new ideas for it.

I liked Jillian until she came out with those pills for weight loss BOO but I honestly am so glad they have Cara. She is a true inspiration and I love her because she’s into boxing and that is my favorite sport in the world to do. I won’t shed a tear over Jillian leaving the show. Now Brett? I don’t really care for him on the show.

Favorite hummus flavor? Probably the edamame one from Trader Joe’s. I don’t have it often but when I do I fall in love all over again ha

    • Tina says:

Edamame hummus? That does sound good! Never seen it before.

And yea – I really don’t care that Jillian stooped to selling diet pills either.

  21. Becca says:

I really really really want to steal your biggest loser date night idea to do this with my mom when I move home! We both love the show!

  22. I watch the Biggest Loser and totally agree – WHAT is going to happen next season? The new trainer annoys me so much when she talks and just doesn’t have the same ability to connect with the audience or with the contestants.

I have a love/hate relationship with biggest loser. I love that it inspires people to get healthy and I loooooove watching the people transform over the course of the season, but I think it sets up such unrealistic expectations for how to go about losing weight and how quickly it should come off. It took me over 2 years to shed 60 pounds, and these people lose that in a few weeks!

  23. Yeap! I love watching the Biggest loser and so does my daughter (well b/c I like it). Every tuesday I remind my hubby that it is on so he has to be with the kids…well that doesn’t always happen. I like to watch it in quiet but with 2 small kids…doesn’t always happen.

It stinks that Jillian is leaving but I can understand. Did you hear that she will be on the Doctors show? I agree that Cara doesn’t cut it…she needs to be more aggressive like Jillian.

    • Mac says:

I agree, not a huge fan of Cara, I do like the boxing aspect she brings to the show though… but get aggressive girl!

  24. Hummus: Roasted Red Pepper.

BL: I have way too much time invested in this season! 5 Months! Gah! LOL. I’m sad to see JM go. I didn’t really care for Cara or Brett. They were equally flat personalities. I thought there was way too much fluffy stuff this season – included product placement!

  25. i’m so sad that jillian is leaving biggest loser too! and i’m with you – cara doesn’t cut it.

go team purple! 🙂 they’ve been my favorite since the beginning!

    • Tina says:

Same here. Loved them from the beginning too. I remember one of the early episodes where Hannah said something like “it won’t taste as good as a hot guy” in a temptation. Her sense of humor won me over right then and there.

  26. Sabra hummus is awesome, but I LOVE Trader Joe’s Tomato Basil flavor. It seriously tastes like pizza sauce- so freaking good!!

  27. Biggest Loser always makes me want ice cream. Probably because I only ever watch it at my parents house, and they always have ice cream. 🙂

My favorite hummus is Trader Joe’s Cilantro Jalapeno flavor. I have to stop myself from eating it with a spoon.

  28. Dorry says:

Your eats for the day look delicious! I love homemade hummus – I usually make it fairly basic with chickpeas, olive oil, tahini, fresh lemon juice, S&P. So good!

  29. Mac says:

I’ve never heard of pine nut hummus, I am going to have to keep my eye out for it. I am a big roasted red pepper hummus fan.

Biggest Loser is by far my favorite show! There are definitely some concerns I have about the show and some possible messages that people get from it. But overall I think it’s intentions are great and I am sad to see Jillian leave! She is far and wide my favorite trainer on the show! Lets just hope Bob doesn’t leave anytime too soon.

  30. Garlic hummus is my favorite. It goes good on everything! Honestly, I haven’t tried one hummus flavor that I don’t like though 🙂

  31. Julie says:

Ah….Hummus. I’m so darn carb sensitive right now, though. It shows up on my plate about once a week. I actually love a very non-traditional black bean hummus that my sister in law makes. Other than that – hummus of almost any variety will do!

I am bummed that Jillian is leaving. Cara seems a little shallow. I’d rather have Kim back!

  32. Jess says:

LOVE seeing your eats – and dare I say, they are quite similar to mine. I love that we share a similar food philosophy!! And now that I see your oats, I NEED to get me some coconut to add to mine next week (I usually add pb and banana…coconut would be a nice treat to add!). And the chobani mango and pineapple mix – brilliant! Must try that one too 🙂

  33. Rebecca says:

It’s always so good to see your daily food intake because it serves as a bit of a reality check. I’m trying to drop a few vanity pounds and my gut instinct is to go back to old behaviors and restrict intake. I know I’m not breastfeeding so I don’t need quite so much, but it’s motivating to see that three square meals a day PLUS snacks is healthy and nothing to beat myself up over. Thanks!

    • Tina says:

I know for me I have to eat in order to lose…otherwise my body fights me so hard. Fuel that metabolism fire! 😉

  34. Errign says:

    Great eats 🙂

My favorite flavor of hummus is peanut butter chocolate 😉 For serious though, when it comes to savory hummus I prefer plain or red roasted pepper.

I don’t watch the Biggest Loser, but I do like Jillian’s workouts she’s teaming up with Self magazine to do 🙂

  35. I pretty much love all hummus- any type, I’ll eat it! And I will definitely miss Jillian on the biggest loser- it will be interesting to see if or how long Bob sticks around…

  36. I always find myself eating an unhealthy dinner while watching the biggest loser! Ironic!?

I love Jillian!! She kicks butt.

  37. That oat combo is killer – and I loved your goat cheese phase! 😉

  38. stephanie says:

I love that you have that tradition with your sister. I always get together with my sister to cook dinner and watch the bachelor!

I’m kind of glad that Jillian is leaving because they’ve stopped showing as many kick butt workouts and alot more coach therapy….which is important, but not my favorite part for tv.

I love Sabra hummus too, right now my favorites are supremely spicy and spinach and artichoke 🙂

  39. Allie says:

Your day of eats looks delish! I like any flavor of hummus 😀

  40. Good day of eats! My favorite flavor of hummus is… any kind of hummus. I wish I were joking.

  41. jobo says:

YUM! Looks like a delicious day of eating. I am CRAVING tacos…may have to make that for dinner soon. And I love the mixed chobani. may have to also try that too. I love hummus, all of it, any kind. I make it myself and always do it straight up traditional. weird maybe?? I do watch BL and am sad Jillian is leaving. I love her.

  42. I typically get a little tired of food blogs that are strictly food journals/this is what I ate blogs. I know that some folks love them though! 🙂 I love your blog, Tina!

  43. I like Greek hummus so far, I haven’t tried them all yet 🙂
I dont watch Biggest Loser any more because we dont have a TV (by choice) any more. But I did watch it years ago. That fruit and yogurt looked good, and I need to get my family to try tofu.

  44. Ela says:

That all looks so good, and so happy-making for you!

My favorite flavor of hummus–I thought it would be cilantro, or extra garlic. But when I went to England last fall, I discovered caramelized onion hummus. It really is the very best.

  45. Your breakfast sounds so delicious! I usually just go with a bowl of Kashi cereal and some fruit since I’m always in a rush, but I get bored rather quickly

  46. Alisha says:

I love looking at your food! I sent the Chobani Mango to school with Sydney today and tried it before putting it into a separate container for her. It was very good…nice with the small chunks of Mango. I rotate between a few brands. I LOVE the Roasted Pine Nut hummus from Sabra…definitely my fave. Nothing exotic but not quite as boring as the traditional or Tahini. Sydney ate some last night actually. She’s been sick and it was the only thing she wanted.

Question, does Makenzie eat the same thing as you? I ask because there’s no way that Sydney would eat all of that…some of it but not most.

See you soon! I hope baby B is feeling better.

  47. Spicy hummus is my favorite. I can’t seem to say no to anything that has a little kick.

  48. Loved seeing a day of your eats! I started my blog by keeping track of my daily eats, but I’ve since stopped. I kind of miss doing it, so maybe I’ll start again? It’s what I feel like doing right now because I’d like to try and work on a few things nutrition-wise (like cutting back on sugar, drinking more water, less caffeine), and it holds me accountable to post my daily meals. So…I might just start posting my daily eats again, and if everyone stops reading…so be it! Stay true to ourselves, right? 😉

Anywho, your day o’ meals looks healthy, balanced, and delicious! YUM!

  49. Helen says:

Thanks for sharing! It is great to see that other healthy bloggers eat normal store purchased treats and not just healthy treats 🙂

I do not watch the biggest loser but I do like Jillian. I will occasionally watch an episode or two a season only because the tv lands on that channel at some point.

  50. Maria @ Chasing the Now says:

Im sad Jillian is leaving. It will be interesting to see what direction the show moves in not a fan of the new trainers.

Who are you rooting for next week? Team Hannah all the way here.
