What is That?!?!

Posted: February 7, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Evening, my friends!! Thank you all for the supportive comments in my last post. Please note that if you ever expressed concern about my workouts, it never angered me. I really do appreciate the love from each of you. Like I mentioned, I wrote that post simply to clarify to everyone out there I am listening and caring for my body.

So, this morning started off with both kiddos up at 6:30. I had a brief moment of frustration because it meant I lost my morning quiet time, but I recovered quickly. I had a good night’s sleep and who can be frustrated at spending time with these two adorable faces?

makenzie read baby b activity mat

I did not extend the same courtesy to my brand new jar of Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter, though…

dark chocolate dreams dcd mold

What is that?!?! I think its mold…but it doesn’t completely look mold-ish. Either way I know I’m not eating it! I already threw away my grocery receipt from the week too. Will I still be able to return it? I better! I used my special $1 off coupon!

The rest of the day went smoothly enough. Kids napped well. We played lots. My afternoon snack redeemed my breakfast disappointment.

mango chobani

Mango Chobani may have just overtaken pineapple as my favorite flavor. I want to mix the two together! Imagine the flavor explosion.

Good things continued with a quick visit from my friend Danielle. She brought us over another care meal. Yes. We’re loved in these parts. 😉

spaghetti casserole

And well fed. That would be a spaghetti casserole with some salad. Tasted good.

Question of the Evening – Do you hold on to grocery receipts? I never do. I sure hope I can still return that PB for another jar.

UPDATE: PB&Co responded in the comments section. What we saw is in fact oil separation and recrystallization of the cocoa butter. I did question its appearance as mold because I  had honestly never seen something like this in my numerous PB&Co purchases. That is what concerned me. So, now we all know. And I knew I would never stop purchasing my beloved PB from this one instance. The stuff is good!

One of my favorite mother-in-law stories is how she made sure I saved the receipt for our Thanksgiving turkey in case it made us all deathly ill. Now, that was a vote of confidence in my grocery shopping skills!

I don’t usually save receipts because I have been able to return items no questions asked. Also, if you use a grocery store card, some times the managers can pull up your whole order on their computer (scary?).

  2. Ewww! Science experiment gone wrong! If PB&Co respond to you with what they think it is, definitely let us all know!

Once my friend found a caterpiller in a bag of frozen broccoli!! That sucker looked pretty fresh, so I guess they really do freeze it pretty quickly. She called Publix (store brand broccoli) and the woman she spoke to was horrified. They offered to give her a new bag for free, but she said “umm…no thanks.” I think she has bought fresh broccoli ever since. haha

I will not eat Chinese in malls because of something similar. When I was like maybe 13 or 14, I had a food court Chinese lunch with my grandmother and there were quite a few caterpillar looking bugs in her veggies. At least 5 or 6. To this day I cannot stomach the thought of food court Chinese.

  4. Ok that is just GROSS. They sure better let you return that! That is usuallly good stuff too… 🙁 So weird!

I just put up a “Must Have’s” baby items blog post! Feel free to add :>

    Ugh, how gross!

I’ve just recently started holding onto my grovery receipts since I’ve gotten into couponing. Makes it easy to track my spending (and savings).

I’d take that back even without a receipt though. I’m sure they’d be understanding.

  6. I never hold onto them. After I get “settled in” I go over the receipt with my Price Match Up sheet to make sure if prices are going up, down or who’s cheaper and then trash it.

That there is mold in your PB. Def take it back, explain to them(show them of course too) and just tell them you want an exchange. They shouldnt give you a problem. I LOVE that stuff!! Always have it avaiable (and did NOT know there was a couponf or it out there. EEP!)

    • Tina says:

The coupon is from my local store. Every now and again they send out special coupons relating to products you buy. I love those coupons! I got free eggs and baby carrots this week.

  7. I rarely save my receipts but everytime I have needed to take something back, they have always been nice and let me with no receipt (this is at a grocery store mind you, not Target or something). Good luck!

That honestly looks like a petri dish growing a bacterial colony! Yuck 😉

  8. I never do either, but I should! A few weeks ago I bought a crate of clementines, got them home and half on the bottom were soft and moldy. Blech!

  9. No, I don’t keep grocery receipts. I would so rarely need them and I have enough paper clutter as it is! I bet the store will allow you to return it though. I think they’d rather keep a customer happy than quibble about your receipt for such a small ticket item.

I am going to have to search out more options for Greek yogurt. I haven’t found very many flavor choices, and mango and pineapple both sound so good!

By the way, that Dark Chocolate Dreams is our newly discovered lunch treat. 🙂

  10. Looks maybe like salt separating from the rest of the nut butter?!

  11. Holly says:

EWWW!! Yes, please let us know if you hear from PB & Co as to what that could be! I am now kind of worried…yikes! That is my favorite peanut butter.
And, LOVE your idea of combining the mango & pineapple flavors- I’m really not big into either of them…don’t hate me 😉 – but I would really like them together. My favorite so far is the Strawberry banana & black cherry. Love my chobani 🙂
& I NEVER save grocery store receipts either- I usually just look them over once, & then give ’em the toss. But I’m so thankful I did yesterday- I looked it over & realized I was charged TWICE for one item..and it was an expensive item- $11.99! I immediately called them & they said just to bring the receipt to customer service & they would refund me. Thank goodness 😀

  12. Yup, that PB does not look good! I never hold on to grocery receipts or almost any receipts for that matter…not good!

    Dear Tina,

Thank you for making us aware of the photos you recently posted on your blog.

What you are seeing is recrystallized cocoa butter. First and foremost, let us assure you that the product is perfectly fine to eat, but we are happy to offer you a refund or replace the product at no cost to you.

So just how do small globs of cocoa butter appear in your jar of Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter? Well, as you probably know, under most circumstances, the peanut oil in traditional natural peanut butter will eventually separate from the rest of the product. Consumers have been trained over time to simply stir the oil back in. Newer products like Dark Chocolate Dreams are called “no-stir naturals” and use a small amount of palm fruit oil, which is an all-natural and trans-fat free oil that is solid at room temperature to “stabilize” the peanut butter and keep the peanut oil from separating. All brands of peanut butter, no matter what kind of stabilizer is used, will eventually experience some amount of oil separation. Time and temperature are the two things that will determine just when that happens.

Occasionally the distributors and retailers that we ship our products to do not always transport and store our products at the optimum temperatures. Like all brands of peanut butter, if our products get a little too warm, the oil may start to separate, and then, when the product gets cooler again, some of those oils may recrystallize. In addition to palm fruit oil, the product you bought, Dark Chocolate Dreams, also contains cocoa butter, which has a different melting and recrystallization point than palm fruit oil, which is one of the reasons why you see the oil recrystallize so dramatic way.

We are dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction and have staff in place to answer questions like these and handle returns when necessary. There are instructions on our website on how to contact us here: http://ilovepeanutbutter.com/contact/

We’d also like to encourage you and your readers to remember that when contacting a company about an issue with any food product, it is always best to include the following pieces of information: 1) The product’s full expiration date (in our case it’s located on the top of the jar, near the lid); 2) The name and address of the store where purchased the product; and 3) The date you purchased the product. By providing this information, you’ll allow the company to begin researching your issue immediately.

Now that we have your contact information, we’ll contact you directly regarding replacing the jar above.

    Most sincerely,

    Lindsay Naple

  14. Eww! I don’t save my grocery receipts either, but I’d definitely try to return it!

  15. Mandy says:

OH YUCKKKKKK to the mold!!! ughhhh!!! And no, I am really bad I always throw grocery receipts away.

Mango Chobani sounds yummy though 🙂

ETA: I just saw the post from the peanut butter folks. That was really nice of them to let you know about it… still I’m not sure how I would feel about eating that. Blech.

  17. Hmm, seperation? really? well, that’s good to know! =)

  18. I keep my grocery recipets for about 2 weeks. But that’s only because I keep all of my recipets in an envelope in my wallet.. clean through it about once a month.

  19. I never hold on to grocery receipts, but I do keep clothing, appliance, and big ticket reciepts.
Glad they fixed your PB 🙂
