I Can’t Believe My Legs Survived

Posts From The Weekend

Somehow, my legs survived this on Saturday.

 IMGP1049

First, let’s back up to Saturday morning. Saturday morning I had my long run for the week planned. After doing a random gym workout instead of my run on Thursday, I couldn’t wait to get my run on. I headed out of my house with what seemed unlimited energy. Unfortunately, that energy didn’t translate over to my run. I accomplished the seven miles but it felt pretty difficult towards the end. I had only slept maybe 4 or 5 hours the night before and I could feel it. My legs dragged towards the end. I surprised myself that I still eeked out a 9:06 pace and finished the run in 1:03:44.

After coming home, showering, relaxing a bit, and downing lunch, I decided a hike with the family would be a fun thing to do together. We have not gone out with Baby B yet, so we chose a shorter, more touristy hike to see how he would handle the pack.

Even though I don’t consider Stone Mountain a true hiking excursion, it holds a special place in my heart. We always have a good time when we go.

Although, my calves might tell you different. The hike is one mile up and then back down. It truly is one giant stone with quite a few scenic spots along the way. It sounds comparatively easy to hikes we tend to choose, but I somehow always forget how steep some sections are!

It felt so great when we finally reached the top and could take a little break.

We hung out for awhile and then headed back down to get ourselves to dinner. I do not know how I woke up without feeling any soreness. I can’t believe my legs survived after running seven miles earlier in the day.

Perhaps eating my body weight in tacos helped? For dinner we went to a TexMex restaurant called Twisted Taco to use a Groupon I purchased awhile ago.

Ummm…not the best meal of my life. Actually, not even good in the most general sense. Even the service was awful! I ordered one of the taco platters. I chose a grilled steak and blue cheese, fish, and pork taco.

 IMGP1106

Meh. And that’s being generous with my description. On the bright side, the terrible service will give Peter and I a funny memory for the time to come! I don’t think that waiter could have forgotten or screwed up more things if he tried.

  • What’s the worst service you have had at a restaurant?
  • Do you like to hike?

Self-Love Reflection: Stop Fat Talk

Hello to my new readers! So great to have you! Be sure to say hello so I can come visit you too. 🙂

For those newer to FFF, I hope you enjoy the weekly installment of my Self-Love series. Each Sunday, I re-post one of the topics discussed during the 30 Days of Self-Love movement I hosted last year. This week – Stopping “Fat Talk”. Enjoy!

Today I want to emphasize exactly how I feel about this topic. STOP. IT. NOW!!!! Stop what? Putting yourself down or “fat talk” as this dialogue has been coined.

We all know about fat talk. Even if you have never heard the term, you have experienced it. It lies in that inner dialogue of self-doubt that puts down our image and denies us of our true beauty. I actually like to think of it as “self-doubt talk” because I believe it plays in more than physical appearance. It comes when we commiserate with other women about how “this dress makes me look fat” or “gosh, I’m so stupid to think the boss would like my idea”. Maybe it even hides behind those times we refuse to accept compliments.

I don’t even begin to think we can fully stop such negative thoughts. They will always find a way to creep back in. We need to become more aware of them and work hard to stop them in their tracks. I have more confidence than ever in who I am, my ability to care for myself, that I have much to offer others, and that I am in fact beautiful. Yet, I still face fat talk more often than I care to admit. Maybe even to the likes of once a day. The difference is I can stop it in its tracks.

What are some steps I take to stop the “self-doubt” talk when it begins?

  • Remember how the part you criticize works for you.
  • Replace with a positive.
  • Be realistic.
  • Reaffirm yourself. Think outside the physical quality or whatever you are tearing down and consider your strengths.
  • Tell someone who you trust will support you and not turn it into a game of “who has it worse”.

One last thing – be aware of when others participate in fat talk. Don’t allow them to! It makes it easier for you to participate as well. As women, we should be lifting each other up instead of standing by while we tear our own selves apart. Simply say “Stop. You’re smarter than to put yourself down like that”. I think this works best because you’re not handing out a compliment to reaffirm the behavior. Also, you’re still showing you think highly of the person and want what is best for them.

What do you do to stop fat talk? From yourself or from others?
