7 Moves For A Strong, Sexy Back

Posted: June 2, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I don’t know about you, but I find some muscle definition a very attractive quality. It displays strength, care of self, and power – which are all sexy to me. I adore strength training and what it does for my body. I believe in it so much that I continuously hope to motivate others to give weights a shot and reap the rewards. For that reason, I want to occasionally share posts that will list some of my favorite moves for each body part. And with strappy dresses and racer back tanks coming out in full force, what better place to start than with the back?

Back exercises usually consist of some form of pulling motion – either in rows, pull-ups, or pull-downs. Luckily for my exercise ADD, you can switch up the basic movements in a variety of ways! I do love the traditional moves like dumbbell rows or standard wide-grip lat pull-downs, but I’m always looking to mix it up a bit as well. Here are 7 back moves I love and that add a little variety to my workouts. And a little spice to my racer back tanks. ;)

Disclaimer: I am NOT a certified trainer. I’m simply posting some favorite exercises. I enjoy sharing workout ideas, but always do what works for your level of fitness!

Standing Straight Arm Lat Pull-down

P1140458 P1140459

For this move, I stand in front of the lat pull-down machine and set it to a much lighter weight than normal. Then using a wide grip, I pull the bar straight down until my hands are level with my hips. I slowly move back to starting position and repeat for reps.

Pull-Ups

P1140443 P1140444

You know I believe pull-ups are the ultimate in back exercises. You know how stoked I felt last week to do my first unassisted pull-ups since before pregnancy. They work so well that I make sure to incorporate pull-up exercises into my strength training once every week. I will use the assisted machine, complete negatives (where you start at the top and slooowwwlllyyy lower yourself down), or just keep trying to do them on my own.

Cable Pull

P1140456 P1140457

I set a cable machine with a handle attachment to the highest position possible. I grab with the hand farthest from the machine, reaching across my face. Then, focusing on pulling from my back, I pullback and down until the handle comes close to my shoulder.

Plank to Row

P1140454 P1140455

I start off in a straight-arm plank position with two light dumbbells in my hands. After establishing a firm and steady base, I alternate sides and pull the dumbbell straight up and back to the side of my ribs.

Inverted Row

P1140452 P1140453

For this exercise, I set the bar on a Smith machine to a low level. Then, I lay under the bar with a grip and with my legs straight and core tight. I then pull straight up.

Dumbbell Pullover

P1140450 P1140451

Laying flat on a bench, I grab a dumbbell I can easily control and start with it between both hands held above my chest. I slowly lower the weight back behind my head, until my upper arms come to my ears, and then return to start slowly as well. I make sure to use slow and controlled movements with this move, to stay safe and focus in on my back.

Underhand Grip Barbell Row

P1140448 P1140449

Something about the underhand grip feels like it works my back better. I bend at the hips with my arms straight, then pull the barbell up into my belly, making sure to keep my shoulders back and back straight the entire time.

So, there you have some of my favorite back exercises! What is your favorite way to work your back?

  7. Allergy Tips That Will Get You Feeling Better Today

Seasonal changes or being around pets, like cats and dogs, can be a nightmare for someone dealing with severe allergies.

Don’t spend all of your time indoors just because
it’s spring! Read the tips in this article and find out inexpensive, effective ways to deal with your allergies so
    you can breathe easy.

To minimize dust in your environment, clean with microfiber cloths, mop heads, and other tools.
Unlike cotton cloths, microfiber cleaning cloths have a slight electrostatic charge, that enables them to grab onto dust particles.
Rather than being spread around the room,
dust particles stick tight, maximizing your cleaning power.

Designate one room in your house to be allergen free.
Keep pets out of that room, remove carpet, and refuse any items that have been outside.
That can be an enormous help to you if you regularly suffer from allergy attacks.
One room that is clean and easy to breathe in, can help you better handle the rest of your house!

Many people can have allergic reactions to the household
cleaners they are using in their home. Many times this problem can be solved by
simply switching to natural products and getting away from chemical cleaners.
Baking soda, plain soap, vinegar, and lemon juice can all be used to clean your home naturally.

You can reduce the amount of exposure you have in your home to potential allergens.
You should keep your windows, and doors closed to prevent pollen from entering your
home. You can take a quick shower after returning from outdoors to remove pollen from your eyelashes, hair and skin. You
should also change clothing and put the clothes that
you wore outdoors in closed hamper.

One way to keep allergies under control is to
make sure that you clean up any messes around your home.
This is important because piles of clutter are going to be home to many allergies causing items such as dust mites and mold.
Be sure to keep your home nice and tidy.

Do not allow your seasonal allergies keep you from the joys
and health benefits of a good run outdoors. The best time to engage
in physical activities outdoors is immediately after a rainshower.
Rain tames clouds of pollens, spores and mold and makes you less likely to encounter high allergen levels.

If you experience post-nasal drip as a result of allergies,
you may feel as if there is a large amount of mucus in the back of your throat.
This uncomfortable feeling is actually the result of a swollen or
irritated uvula, and you may end up with a sore throat if you constantly try to dislodge non-existent mucus.
Drink a glass of ice water to reduce that swelling and provide quick relief.

Although it’s common knowledge, many people forget to
wash their hands when preparing food. Washing your hands during
food preparation ensures that particles of allergy causing foods are not mixed
with other non allergenic foods, which is essential if you are preparing meals for multiple people and not all of
    them have allergies.

Get rid of all that clutter in your home. Create an atmosphere that is healthy and
easy to breathe in to avoid having an allergic reaction.
So think about doing some cleaning around the house,
even if it isn’t spring, so you can avoid having so many daily
    allergic reactions.

Make your own air cleaner. Buy a box fan, and a filter. Attach the filter with a
rubber band to the side of the fan that the air is blowing towards.

This will catch allergens in the air, and prevents them from recirculating,
    and irritating allergies even further.

Kitchens are breeding grounds for mold, which can torment would-be chefs who
have mold allergies. To discourage the growth and spread of
this unwanted intruder, always use an exhaust fan while preparing food on the stove
or in the oven. This draws excess moisture from the air, which makes it difficult for mold to grow.

Consider changing your diet. Often, people are allergic to more than one thing.

When they cut out one allergen, they can deal with
the others better. You may not think you have a food allergy,
but try cutting out the common culprits such as gluten and dairy.
    You might feel much better.

To reduce the volume allergens in your home, consider
changing up your current window coverings. Horizontal blinds are major allergen offenders and are known to collect allergens on the surface of
the blinds. Instead, opt for window dressings
made from synthetic materials like acrylic or nylon. Washable roller shades are another
    good option.

If your home is carpeted throughout, consider upgrading
your vacuum cleaner. Ideally, your vacuum should feature one or more HEPA or small particle filters.
These heavy-duty filters are far superior to older models
that catch only some of the dust, dander and other allergens
that lurk in your carpet or rugs.

Remove all pet hair from upholstery by vacuuming at least once a week.

There are some vacuums available with a pet hair attachment that is better at picking up pet hair.
Don’t allow your pets on your furniture to avoid any build-up of dander or
    hair in the future.

Many people hang their clothes out to dry on a clothesline, instead of using an electric
dryer. While this is a good idea to save energy resources, it is not good for
those who have allergies. Hanging your clothes in your yard allows them the chance to collect pollen or mold.

Find out what is causing your allergy symptoms. Many people focus on the itching
and sneezing, but it’s important to get to the root of the problem.
Take a look at your environment and discover what is triggering your allergies.

You might be allergic to more than one thing, so take care and investigate all possible
    causes.

Allergy sufferers like you are always looking for ways to find relief.
There are many methods available, but it is difficult to decide which ones will work for you.
This article has discussed some proven methods, and explained how they can help you to find relief from your allergy symptoms.
Use them and start to feel better today!
