I Belong On A Makeover Show

Posted: August 18, 2011 at 7:00 am

Sometimes I secretly wish I was one of those women. You know what I mean. One of those ladies who always looks so well put together and classy. One of those women who can take jeans and a basic tee and make it look c’est magifique. Someone who can take workout gear from frumpy and dumpy to chic and haute. But oh ho ho…I am so not one of those women.

Truth: I smell like strawberries. In an overly sweet, fake, disgusting way.

I forgot to put my new bottle of shampoo in the shower. So, when I went to wash my hair this morning my only two options were store brand dandruff shampoo (sorry to rat you out, Peter) and Makenzie’s wash. Even Sadder Truth: At least I’m clean. Which is more than I can say for all day Monday and Tuesday. I gross myself out sometimes.

Truth: I have no fashion sense.

I decided to stop at the store Charming Charlie to pick up a couple accessories for my cocktail party dress I plan to wear at Healthy Living Summit. I literally own NO jewelry besides my wedding bands. I felt lost in that store. It wasn’t pretty.

IMG_0214

What even goes with a brown V-neck dress??? Or a black strapless dress??? Heck. I have no clue! Even Sadder Truth: I let Makenzie pick something for me. You think I’m joking. And perhaps the saddest of all? Kid has better fashion sense than I do.

Truth: I need a personal stylist…so I got one.

Although a personal stylist for me puts together workout outfits. Until someone nominates me for What Not To Wear and earns me a $5000 shopping spree, I will gladly accept someone willing to help my workout fashion. Even Sadder Truth: I would probably take a workout wear stylist over a fashion guru any day. Although I did once want to dress awfully and have my mom nominate me for What Not To Wear just so I could get a shopping spree. I doubt that would have worked though.

Thankfully, Champion offered me the chance to participate in the Shape Your Life program to try out some of their new shaping active wear. As part of the program, they sent me three different outfits put together by a personal stylist to suit my favorite activities and lifestyle. I broke into outfit numero uno right away.

This included the Shape Smoothing Long Top and the Ultimate Women’s Running Tights. Let me just say that any black leggings that can look that decent on my lower half get major props from me. And the smoothing long top was in fact very smoothing. I loved its fit and think it has great shape. I felt like cat woman – sleek, all black, and ready to kick some butt.

Me-OW!

IMGP0563 IMGP0560 IMGP0561

I wore the gear for a kickbox workout and only have good things to say about both pieces.

The top gave me plenty of girly support. It moved easily with my body and didn’t ride up on my stomach, which can happen with some form fitting tops. I truly felt cinched in, but  comfortably so. The pants felt very breathable and comfortable as well. I think they will make for great running gear when the temperatures start dropping. So far, I’m a fan and can’t wait to try out the other items. The Smoothing Knee Pants sound like a dream!

Truth: I have way too much stuff to do before I leave this afternoon, so I must now say goodbye. See you from Philly!

  • Are you fashionable? If not, what fashion faux pas would earn you a spot on a makeover show?

This post is sponsored by Champion and I received monetary compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own. I only ever participate in programs that I see naturally fit my blog and that allow for honest feedback.

  1. You are just the cutest thing! Maybe instead of a run, we can meet at the mall and I can be your personal shopper. And, just to let you know, I didn’t shower yesterday and it was a miracle that I just took one this morning. Ha!

  2. Amanda says:

Oh my word…I’m laughing because I’ve also threatened to dress horribly to get on What Not to Wear! I’ve begged my husband to nominate me for that show! I manage a women’s gym and I’m in dental hygiene school, so my typical daily clothing involves scrubs and track suits. I love the tank top – very cute! And after two kids, I’ll take anything with “slimming” or “shaping” in the name. 🙂

  3. I try to be put together, but usually it just backfires!

  4. Erica says:

Soooo with you. I have like zero fashion sense! Very cool that you got to test out the champion gear! I always buy their stuff at target! So wish i was going to the hls

  5. Sarah says:

You look great in your workout clothes!
I’m certainly not always put together, but many of my teens seemed to think so. I told them that anything works fashion-wise, as long as you feel good and confident in it. And it’s true!
I hope you have a great time at the Summit this weekend- one of these years, I hope to make it myself!

  6. The Champion active wear looks great on you!! For me, style is definitely something that has been learned rather than coming naturally. When it comes to bolder patterns I usually need the opinion of friends though :D. And I’ve always wanted to go on What Not to Wear for the shopping spree and style tips. I’ve even been tempted to forgo style altogether so that one of my friends would nominate me. haha.

  7. I am a complete accessory-phobe- the ONLY piece of jewelry I ever wear is my wedding ring- one of my ear-piercing holes has closed from non-use. 🙂

    See you at HLS!

  8. Khushboo says:

I used to be a major tom boy but I’d like to think I’ve changed my style for the better! For starters, I LOVE dresses and skirts. When people tell me they like what I’m wearing, I’m still shocked ha! Looking forward to HLS recaps :)!

  9. I love fashion and clothes and all things “girly”. I come from a family of 4 girls and no brothers so we all love to shop and decorate 🙂

  10. Lee says:

I’m with you on the fashion sense. I don’t really have any either. If I had my way, I would wear a t-shirt and yoga pants everyday! Too funny that M picked out your jewelry!

Have fun at the HLS. I wish I was going!

  11. Kelly says:

Not fashionable at all…mainy because in my free time I am ALWAYS in workout clothes…always.

  12. Love the workout clothes – especially to find flattering workout pants!!

I think my fashion sense isn’t too bad, although it’s definitely my own – a little bohemian and more flow-y than is probably flattering! My downfall, though, is for comfort – I can’t last in anything that isn’t comfortable for very long, so usually I default to comfortable clothes. If I could find the right combination of stylish and comfortable….then I’d be set 🙂

  13. here’s my deal: i’m so lazy. i actually do think i have fashion sense, but when it comes to showering and fixing my hair and picking out an outfit and so on and so on i just don’t care. but i can pick out stuff for my friends all day long!

i LOVE those clothes you got…so cute and they look great!

  14. all of your new gear it too cute! i love it all! 🙂

i am NOT fashionable. i try to avoid any “what was she thinking” moments by sticking to pretty simple, casual, and comfortable pieces. it works for me!

  15. You look great in that workout wear! I will have to check out their line, because it looks right up my alley!

Anyways, you are not alone. I can’t dress myself to save my life. I never understood fashion and I can promise everyone you will never see a fashion page on my blog 🙂 I’m relishing in the last couple weeks of maternity clothes, because after that I know I’ll be expected to dress myself and look presentable again… sigh… I actually hate clothes shopping (unless I had a personal stylist, too!)

  16. You don’t just feel like catwoman, you LoOk like catwoman! Verry Grrrr Baby! <– I'm I the only one who still uses Austin Powers references???

Oh, and I know what you mean about What Not to Wear. I want to go on that show too.

  17. krit says:

I learned from fashion blogs not to accessorize with the same color that you are wearing. You want colors on opposite ends of the color wheel to pop out! So with brown you could do bright teal, coral, hot pink, etc…basically anything bright! Same with black obviously. Prints are a little harder for me to figure out but I’m getting there. And Charming Charlie even overwhelms me and I’m a jewelry girl!!

  18. I have absolutely no fashion sense. I’m hopeless. So I usually stick with basics, black shoes, black purse, pink dress, period. Boring, I know, but better boring than embarrassing.
Those Champion clothes look great! You can never have enough workout gear, right? 😉

  19. jobo says:

Jess nominated us for a special casting call for What Not to Wear for triplets in Boston and we were thisclose to being on the show! Last minute, they chose another set of triplets out west that were turning 30 (I think we were 28 at the time)…sniff sniff! Soclose to a 5K wardrobe for being triplets, not for dressing badly! 😉 TOTALLY get that, would love that too. I love your outfit! I will have to check out their stuff, I have gotten some at Target before and have always liked them.

  20. Lisa says:

You are so cute! Thats so funny you let Makenzie pick out stuff! hahahhahahha.

And your body looks incredible in those pictures! You did a wonderful job getting your body back!

  21. Julia says:

You look sassy in that black tank and tights! I own very little jewelry (not entirely by choice). I just don’t wear it very often, so it feels wrong to buy it all the time.

  22. Charming Charlie is really really overwhelming. I’m either in and scared away in 3 seconds.. or I spend 3 hours trying to find something I like. And I spend most of my life in gym shorts and a sports bra… soo it takes me a while to look put together.

  23. I wish I was one of those women too! Maybe if I read enough fashion blogs… 🙂

  24. Alexa says:

I need a makeover show BADLY! In fact, I had my friend come over last week and help me go through my closet to try and weed out the bad stuff, as she’s much more fashion conscious than I am. I can find cute individual pieces, but putting together a whole outfit can be a challenge!

  25. Bari says:

Love the workout duds! I try hard to look cute, but need major help with accessories too.

  26. I’m not fasionable at all! I need my own stylist!

  27. Lookin good in all that black! Can’t wait to meet you tomorrow!

  28. I am right there with you! I don’t have a lot of fashion sense, and I seldom look “put together”. But I am laid back, and I like it!

Love that Shapewear, looks awesome on you!

  29. I like to think I have some type of fashion sense, but I could definitely go on a show for hair makeovers! I have thick, curly hair and have been straightening it for most of my life and try to mix it up by having it long and then going short, but I feel like I just never know what to do with it!

  30. I’m so glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t own jewelery/accessories! I’ve got my wedding bands & one other ring…that’s it! I’m always in awe of gals that seem to have an accessory for every outfit.

I’ve heard great things about the new Champion gear – I look forward to hearing more about how you like the line!

  31. Love the green necklace! Can I be your personal stylist? I love shopping and picking out clothes.

See you tomorrow at the cocktail party — so excited!

  32. Genie says:

OMG! LOL! I need a stylist, too. I have style (I like to think!), but I prefer comfort so much more than cuteness most of the time… and wearing accessories annoys me… I’m pretty much hopeless. :o)

I want that smoothing tank! I love their sports bras, so I might just have to check out some of their clothes as well!

  33. Thanks for featuring Charming Charlie in your blog!! We have added your blog to our blog mentions page on our website. It’s a page we created exclusively for showcasing Charming Charlie blog mentions!
    http://www.charmingcharlie.com/blog-mentions

  34. I am the same way with jewlery/accesories. It’s embarrassing really. Love your cat woman picture, haha!

  35. Kellie says:

I smelled like suave apple detangler yesterday. I used my daughters because I didn’t have time to shower and my hair looked like a rats nest. As a mom of three, if I have my teeth brushed and face washed, its a good day. I laughed the other day when I didn’t remember the last time I actually washed my hair. Thank goodness for pony tails and buns.

  36. karen says:

I would love to be one of those girlies who are swept off the street and treated to a makeover. Zero sense of style here. As for Charming Charlie – I think even fashionistas feel like a whirlwind in that place. Too many things to look at in 1,000 different places. Have fun at HLS!

  37. My husband has better fashion sense than I do, which is so sad. I hate shopping because I never know what to get. Isn’t it okay to just wear what the mannequin is wearing?

Love the pants by the way! I totally need a pair like that to go running in.

  38. First of all, that outfit looks HOT! I love it.

Second, I am so not fashionable either. The other night I went over to a friends house wearing something other than yoga pants and a tshirt and she says all surprised, “wow, you look really nice”.
That kind of thing happens a lot. It makes me thing maybe I should actually look in a mirror before I go out in public. 🙂

  39. I always have the same thoughts! lol. I know nothing about fashion but wish I did…but then it costs money, takes time, and I was not born with that talent! So, I’ll stick with my jeans and plain old t-shirts. 😛 Me and accessories? Wait, accessories? what the heck are those?!?

  40. Bless you, Tina! I feel like the frumpiest person in my office, ha ha ha. Granted I am the youngest–but that is sad. I should be the most fashionable, no? I never wear jewelry and get ragged on that all the time. My sense of what matches is seriously flawed too. Is it so bad that I just want to be comfortable? Wash and dry my hair, throw it up somehow and put on some comfy pants and a shirt and go? Luckily I sit in a cube all day, but a lot of ladies have nice dresses and skirts … oh well.

  41. Rebecca says:

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have some professional person come in and tell me what works and what doesn’t, especially when it comes to dresses and stuff.
My sister and one of her friends are my “stylists”… Sort of.
Yesterday I ended up with a new top. It was my sister’s (she’s been getting rid of clothing lately–thank God!!), and she’d only worn it like once ever, and it fit me, so I took it. Because my mom thought I’d like it. And I do. And I wore it practically all day yesterday. 🙂

  42. Hmmm I would definitely go with the black strapless and go for some long pearls (they can be fake!) to be able to wrap around OR a silver statement necklace!
I feel the same way – I always try to look my best when i workout – it makes me feel good! I can’t nail it every time though!
    Dress to Impress! 🙂

  43. Kiah says:

I’ve been hankering for some new workout wear! I esp. like the top, since you mentioned it doesn’t “ride-up.” It’s surprising how many tops do! And, I do have the world’s looonnngest torso! Have fun at HLS! So jealous.

  44. I vote the black dress with the green jewelry. Just my two cents 🙂 Have so much fun!

  45. Errign says:

Um, I’m like the least fashionable person in the WORLD. I’m pretty sure that the people that manage my apartment complex think I’m always wearing yoga clothes or running shorts, which is probably 85% true.

I’m now excited for kids so they can help me dress myself. True story.

  46. Cindy says:

I’m NOT fashionable, lol! I teach preschool for a living, and my wardrobe shows it. But…I’m comfortable, and I get hugs all day long. It could be worse.

Charming Charlie gives me ADD every time I go in there.

  47. Hey lady! I love the workout clothes! You look great in them! I actuallly sell an accessory line called Stella and Dot (www.stelladot.com/stephaniemidkiff) and I would love to help you get some great basic jewelry pieces! Browse at the link and contact me and I’ll love to give you 15% off!!

  48. I get so jealous of the fashion blogs that I see where people just whip up a super cute outfit like nothing. I try to put together some really nice with accessories and style my hair and it never works out. If I can lose these last pounds I would so be willing to hire someone to be my personal shopper so I could have these super cute outfits or someone could just nominate me for What Not to Wear and then I wouldn’t have to pay anything!

  49. Where to start? except for the fact that i LOVE you 🙂 And the first time i went into Charming Charlie’s i freaked out! My ADD brain was in complete overload!!!! All the jewelry and the colors= LOVE!

It’s kind of funny. I become a certified personal trainer and the first workouts I turn to this week come from someone else. The book came in for me at the library last week and, after flipping through it, I couldn’t wait to give the circuits a go. Making The Cut includes a lot of […]
