the simple things

Posted: August 10, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Thanks for all the feedback on the new posting schedule. I find that I like doing shorter posts as well. I think I will keep it up. It makes things simpler. Which kind of goes against what I thought. I always thought posting more often would be harder, but organizing posts becomes quicker and easier this way. I’m all about the simple things in life. My day represented that well.

I spent as much time as I possibly could playing with this pretty face.

I don’t think you can get much simpler than reading children books and talking about colors. I only kid. Mothering equates to the most difficult job I’ve ever experienced. But simply looking at her smile makes it all worthwhile. And moments like this…

 IMGP5978 IMGP5981 IMGP5982IMGP5983

That would be the downing of a Green Monster. Start ‘em young! Makes life much more simple.

My food choices today all fell into the simple category as well. I craved produce like none other. It saddened me that a bountiful did not yet fill my refrigerator at lunch. I went with my current favorite stand-by. A tomato, veggie sausage, laughing cow sandwich and an apple for some crunch. Simple, yet so satisfying.

After lunch, I got some writing finished. Namely my next Examiner article. I took a tip from Hallie on this one and wrote tips on how to get started with healthy habits. Take a look! I also caught up on emails and reading blogs. Obviously I keep my priorities simple too.

Once little M awoke from her nap I knew a grocery run must happen. I needed my greens and food for dinner this week. The simple theme continued here because I had no time to pretty myself up. Who says you have to go out looking fancy? A simple look of no make-up and damp hair knotted back works for a grocery store run.

Simplicity reigned for my afternoon snack and dinner as well. I fought M had a Green Monster with a chocolate vita top slathered with hazelnut spread for my snack.

Then I shared a simple and delicious dinner with the husband and the little sister. I made up basic sandwiches – turkey, spinach, Swiss cheese, avocado, spicy mustard, and tomato. With heavenly vegetables on the side. Sliced red pepper, cucumber, and carrots with Sabra spinach + artichoke hummus for dipping. My dinner plate even featured a few Food Should Taste Good jalapeno chips. Yum!!!

Now it’s time to give my brain some simple entertainment by sharing laughter with my sister and watching mind-numbing things like Wipeout and The Bachelor Pad from last night.

  • What simple thing made you happy today?
  • Do you feel comfortable going out without your makeup or hair done or does it just not matter to you? I’ve never been big on make up. I like getting prettified for nights out with friends and some random days, but usually I just shower and go. I try to make an effort on a semi-regular basis to not feel like I don’t care about myself and my looks though.

  1. I am (mostly) happy today…I’ve got a sinus infection, so more than anything, I’m just tired and drained! Being sick takes a lot out of you!

I usually do my hair most days (and by that I mean, blow dry it…it dries quite straight). I go through phases with makeup. I’ll go for awhile without wearing it, then get into a phase where I feel like I should wear it.

  2. Hey Tina 🙂
Yes, I’m all about making life as simplistic as possible, in every aspect.
LOVE the pics of your daughter drinking a green smoothie!
So, what simple thing made me happy today….playing the Wii with my daughter. and seeing my son at his job. picking tomatoes from my garden.
    Ok-that’s more than one. 🙂
I completely feel comfortable going out in public sans makeup or having my hair done.
I RARELY wear makeup. A couple months ago I wore a little bit and my daughter said, “what’s on your face!!?” I said,”makeup.” she said, “what’s makeup?”
She’s 6. So, yeah, that tells you how often I wear makeup. LOL 🙂

  3. homecookedem says:

I had a simple day today also. I’m trying to enjoy my last couple days of freedom this summer. Spending the afternoon reading baby/pregnancy magazines made me so happy today.

I don’t mind running out to the store without make up or doing my hair, but if I think I might see a co-worker or student, I might put on some powder and at least brush my hair, haha! 😉

  4. My simple bowl of oatmeal that I eat EVERY SINGLE MORNING was so yummy today with a splash of DaVinci Gourmet SF Pancake syrup. Seriously, it was so small an addition but I was like a kid in a candy store eating it. It made magic in my tummy! 🙂

Pretty much Mon-Fri I’m in gym clothes with little or no make-up and my hair in a messy bun. I work out twice a day, so there really isn’t a point to getting all dolled up when I am just going back for another sweat sesh HA! I do however make it a point to look nicer on the weekends for my Hubbs (and myself, really). It’s nice to know on the weekends that you’ve still “got it” HA! 🙂

    • Tina says:

I do the same thing. I spend most of the week in workout clothes and no makeup, but the weekends I like to look nice.

Also…I saw you asking about dairy on your blog. I never cut it out until the very end and didn’t notice much of a change when I did. I’m not overly sensitive to it though. I try to cut out as little as possible so my body wouldn’t revolt when I brought them back.

  5. Jennifer says:

I really love your new hair color. You look gorgeous.

Oh, and the new posting schedule is awesome. I like catching up with you during the day, when it’s not Family Time. 🙂

  6. Oh Tina she is just SO cute. Seriously, that picture of her with the green monster is adorable.

  7. oh gosh, such beautiful blonde curls on that little one!

what is it about carrots and hummus that go so well together. i swear, it’s one of the best taste combinations on earth 🙂

i used to really care about makeup before leaving the house. i guess things changed once i hit my mid-twenties. now i can go to the grocery store or workout and not have to apply mascara first. but i still want to take pride in my appearance, not “let myself go” just because i’m married now and all that. i think it helps to keep the relationship fresh!

  8. Good luck with the new schedule. As a reader, I appreciate both shorter and longer posts, depending on the time I have. In general I have very little time – so short is better. Maybe longer on the weekends?

Anyway, my simple pleasure today was happy hour with coworkers. I was initially stressed about going – thinking of all the more “productive” things I should be doing. But it’s so nice to simply be among friends sharing stories and laughs!

    • Tina says:

That sounds like a great time! Glad you got to enjoy time with friends. And I probably will do one longer post on weekends since I’m busier.

  9. What a cutie pie! You have such a beautiful little girl! Did she like the green monster?

I’ve been known to run weekend errands with no make-up, no shower. It doesn’t bother me. I don’t think most people are that judgmental anyway and most of the time, they probably don’t even notice 🙂

  10. Kady says:

Feeding your daughter a green monster is the cutest thing ever! And you look cute with no make-up! I think we’re harder on ourselves than anyone else ever is and most women I know look better not made up anyway – more natural. I ran to the store looking just like you today straight out of the shower!

Something simple that made me happy today was breaking some frustration/tension at work goofing off with my coworkers!

  11. You look stunning without makeup 🙂 I don’t wear much at all either and like to go days without it. My skin feels so fresh and clean without it.

A simple gesture today made me smile: my Fiance’s best friend messaged me to tell me how much my Fiance compliments me all the time. He didn’t have to reach out the do that, but he did and even though I know it, it felt good to hear it.

P.S. your daughter is so cute. We need to contact Angela to have her be the GM spokesperson (err, baby) 🙂

    • Tina says:

That is incredibly sweet! That would make my day too.

And haha. M would love to model for GMs. She loves the camera after all.

  12. Meg says:

You’re such an inspiring mom. I can’t wait to have little ones in a few years! Simple things that make me happy are probably funny songs by Queen (like Bicycle Race) and glitter pens.

  13. I’ve been known to frequent my grocery store at odd times (early on weekend mornings or late at night during the week). This often comes after or right before a workout or such. So I don’t really get all cute, but I do sometimes blot my face or swipe some powder as to get rid of a little shine… 🙂

  14. Lee says:

Aw, that’s cute that M likes green monsters.

I wear makeup if I go out to a restaurant, but if I’m just going to the grocery store or something like that, I’m usually in my workout clothes with no make up on at all.

  15. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more confidant about the no makeup thing. BUT I still don’t LIKE to. I feel almost naked without it!
LOVING M drinking a green monster!!

  16. Aw love that your cute baby girl already likes green monsters! hehe

I rarely wear make up to work – I try to reserve it for going out! I’m definitely comfortable going out like a mess – love the wet knot look too. LOL 🙂

  17. Dorry says:

I almost never wear makeup – unless it’s nighttime and I’m going out. But during the day – no makeup and my hair is almost always air-dried. I used to wear makeup more often when I had an office job.

Simple thing today: a great phone call with my sister.

  18. oh those pics of your little girl slamming down that GM are too precious 🙂

  20. I tend to wear makeup at school but not at home. I just don’t care as much here I guess. I am much more relaxed. But now that I have gotten in the habit of not wearing makeup I probably won’t spend the time doing it once I get back up to school.

In other news, I think those pictures of your daughter drinking a green monster are hilarious! She looks so precious in those pics! I hope she liked it!

  21. Heather says:

M is so gorgeous, just like her mama! i only really ever wear mascara, so i am totally fine with no make-up and such. plus my eyeliner is tattooed on so that makes things easier 🙂

and the best simple thing today was spending good time with my amazing friends tonight, just grilling out and loving on eachother 🙂

  22. You can definitely work the no-makeup look! You have beautiful features, no makeup required 😀

I have “less” makeup days only because my skin is not very even. I use just a little bit to even things out and call it good. I definitely rock the wet hair in a bun thing though!

  23. I bet that young ‘un will grow up loving her greens! Sporting a green mustache is the new milk mustache! 😀

  24. Becky says:

Most days, I leave my hair and face untouched. I love glamming it up when I go out at night, but I don’t need anything for day-to-day errands.

I love simple days. It makes me happy to read a good book and walk my dog.

  25. Lindsay says:

She is seriously the cutest baby ever! Being able to run yesterday made me really happy. It wasn’t easy, but the fact that I was able to do it made me smile. I used to be very uncomfortable with the idea of leaving the house without make up. Last year I finally had an aha moment that made me realize I’m still me with or without my makeup.

  26. Hahaha love the green monster pics!! Priceless 🙂

I am all about going out without makeup on. However, more than likely, you see me with M&C – mascara and concealer. oh, and chap stick. Gotta have the chapstick.

  27. Sarah says:

Your eats for today look really appetizing to me. Maybe I’m craving simple, too?
I loved that picture of M drinking your Green Monster. You’re right- why not start ’em young? Also, she is absolutely adorable!

  28. Shannon says:

I spend most of my time without makeup because I am studying from home. But right now, the pregnancy acne is so bad that when I go out, I at least cover up the red marks. Can’t wait to have clear skin again!

  29. Your eats all look perfect to me! I would imagine all you want is clean food after eating out for so much last weekend! I am the same way. I totally agree with start them early! It does help. As for going out without makeup, I have only just recently gotten comfortable with that. Honestly, I think it goes along with feeling better about myself. Does that make sense? I never would have done it before, but now I do it all the time.

I hope you have a great day Tina!

    • Tina says:

That definitely makes sense and I feel the same way. The more confident I become the more I don’t care how other people perceive me. It’s about what I am comfortable with. So liberating!

And I loved being able to have fresh food yesterday. I don’t mind going out and indulging on occasion, but last weekend was too much.

  30. rachael says:

Love the green monster pics! My son loves them too. 🙂

  31. I love that you gave your daughter some Green Monster. That’s just awesome. 🙂

I have very sensitive skin, so the less makeup I wear the better. I often go without very much at all, and the days when I don’t bother blow-drying my hair always feel very liberating!

    • Tina says:

She loves them. I only made myself one yesterday and I think she drank half of it. I’m glad she likes the healthy stuff. Makes it much easier on me.

  32. Laughing at the dog wearing a diaper. I know she’s uncomfortable, but it’s funny.

And…I’m currently sitting at work with wet hair and no make-up…so, I’d say yes, I’m comfortable with it.

  33. The green monster pics are too cute!!!!!!!!!

Something as simple as a sunny blue skied day makes me happy 🙂

  34. Aww I love the pics of her drinking the green monster. I go out without makeup and my hair done all the time. It doesn’t bother me one bit.

  35. Wow, I never wear makeup, so I feel ok going out in public without it! I’ll wear some for special occasions, but thats about it. I do prefer to have taken a shower before leaving the house 🙂

What simple thing makes me happy? Getting up each morning next to my husband! Having a short commute to work makes me happy too.

  36. Love the picture of M drinking the GM – too funny. She’s such a doll. I think my simple pleasure yesterday was getting into pjs at 4:15pm.

  37. Nichole says:

I skipped an evening workout session for dinner with friends, simple and worth every minute.

    Littlest green monster fan, niiice:)

I quit worrying about hair and make-up when I moved from GA a few years ago, since I didn’t know anyone I didn’t care. Now that I’m back in GA, I’ve learned to not let it bother me.

  38. I love the premise of your blog! A balance of faith, fitness, and fun is most important!

  39. What a great post! I love the “simple things” they always make life worth living! Your daughter is so beautiful and i’m sure spending time with her is one of the greatest parts of your day!

I am usually not super comfortable going without make up mainly bc it looks like I have no eye lashes when I do. BUT I do it and my hubby actually likes me better without so to me, there is no better compliment!

  40. Your little girl is TOO adorable!!

You look amazing with no makeup on! Your lucky!! I used to not care at all about how I look, I still don’t to a point…I work in sweats with a ponytail so that’s how I am always dressed when I go gym clothes. I used to never wear makeup, only on the weekends…lately, I have had to replenish my Bare Escentuals more..I feel like I need at least some concealer under my eyes, and a little powder, mascara and bronzer.. or its kinda scary, haha. I just fell less like a schlub, since I am always in gym clothes, at least if my face is a little less scary!

  41. Camille says:

That is a beautiful little girl you’ve got there!

  42. julie says:

haha!! start ’em young. LOVE that green monster action girl 🙂

seriously it really is all about the simple things in life! thanks for reminding us girrrl

  43. What a little cutie!!! I am obsessed of the picture with her drinking the Green Monster! Heheh 🙂

  44. I love that your daughter drinks GMs! I can’t even convince my fullgrown boyfriend to take a sip. Too cute!!

  45. eatmovelove says:

Wow – she is a little doll isn’t she?!

Love your eats – you take great pictures too. And, yes, The Bachelor Pad is horrible. And yet I’m sure I will continue to watch 😉

  46. Hallie says:

Hey, thanks for the shout-out! I loved the article. A coworker of mine is pretty overweight and pregnant, and they put her on this really strict diet so she doesn’t develop gestational diabetes. So she has the cravings and hormone stuff, but isn’t allowed to indulge at all. I feel bad for her, but I know she does pay a lot more attention to her eating and lifestyle habits when she’s growing a little person 🙂

Oh and your photos? LOVELY. I want to eat that apple and squeeze M’s cheeks.

  47. Haha when I have kids, I will INSIST that they drink GMs!! I will occasionally go out without makeup, but it is a very rare occasion!! I live in a pretty small city and know a lot of people in the area (it’s a university town!) so the risks of seeing someone I know are fairly high! Around the house though… I’m all about giving my skin a break!

  48. Yum Yucky says:

haha! that “pretty face” had a more excellent reaction than I when it came to downing a green monster. You’re right, start ’em early! I shall feed it to my Greedy Baby. She eats anything.
