health problems?

Posted: August 18, 2010 at 11:23 am

Let me start off by saying I love my husband!!! I accidentally deleted this post and he saved the day by finding a way to recuperate it. Has that ever happened to you? Tell me I’m not alone! Now to my saved post. 😀

Last night while getting ready for bed, I realized that I have quite a few healthy habits that pose no problems. Then, on the flip side, I have my fair share I seem to struggle with. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not perfect. This just goes to show so even more. My problems and my not-problems. We all have them! 😉

Not Problem: Teeth Maintenance. I loathe the feel of dirty teeth and going to bed without a minty storm in my mouth. Flossing, brushing, and mouthwash rinsing almost calm me before bed. Even when I face the strong desire of collapsing into bed headfirst with clothes still on I will make a point to polish my pearly whites. Note – not my teeth below. [Source]

Problem: Makeup Removal. I don’t wear makeup often, but when I do, quite the struggle ensues on whether or not its worth cleaning my face before bed, especially the mascara. The devil on my left shoulder usually wins out. I hate doing it! The mascara stains on my pillow case will attest to that.

Not Problem: Working Out. It is my “me-time”. My solace. A pure pleasure to my day. If there’s a way to get a workout in that day, you better believe it will happen for me nine times out of ten. The endorphins I leave with always make the time worth it and set up a positive tone for my day. This morning’s Power class did just that. The new release is tough!!!

Problem: Sleeping. I know adequate rest is vital to good health. And I do my best. Normally I get around 7-8 hours per night, but not lately. I have pregnancy insomnia in a sense. I rarely can fall asleep before 11 and my body wakes me around 4 am every morning for a bathroom run. Then, I register that my hips and back ache from the uncomfortable sleeping positions and I have difficulty getting back to a quality sleep. I doze in and out for 1.5 hours, but its not the same. I miss my sleep!

Not Problem: Releasing pressure. And *ahem* that would be in the form of gas. I have always been one flatulent chick. I vividly remember torturing my younger brother and sister by sitting on their faces and letting one rip when I was younger. Don’t judge me. I don’t need too many beans to be musical. The bunny makes it cuter, no? 😉

Problem: Actually going. I think this is the part of pregnancy I loathe the most. My stomach aches a lot and much of it is purely from a lack of quality bathroom time. I drink water. I eat fiber. I move my body. Having a #2 schedule like a 90 year old grandmother should not happen to me! And don’t worry…there will be no pictures for this one. Ewwwww.

Not Problem: Eating healthfully. I  feel so much better when I eat a balanced and healthful diet. That alone motivates me enough to give my body the good stuff. With treats here and there too of course. 😉

Problem: Lack of variety. I get in food grooves where I will eat the same thing (or very similar) day in and day out. Variety is the spice of life and should be part of healthy eating to help get in a variety of nutrients. I’m not opposed to eating different things. I like a lot of different things. But having a routine and not needing to buy a TON of ingredients at the store always seems to win out. Plus, I like my food. Even if that means 5 of the 7 weekly breakfasts are some form of oats, nubutter, and fruit.

  1. I have a huge problem with sleeping more than a few hours at a time. I wake up at a minimum of 2 times a night, often more. I definitely get into a food rut, but sometimes it’s of my own doing as in I like consistency.

  2. I’m the same as you in that I need to brush/floss before bed, but removing my makeup doesn’t always happen………

I have food phases all the time. I just get into things and then a few weeks or months later move onto something else. It works for me 🙂

Kudos husband for saving the day!

  3. OH girl… I HATE washing my face at night! I always do it – ALWAYS, but I despise it.

    • Tina says:

And I’ve tried everything too. From using those makeup removal cloths to washing with regular cleanser and more. All of it irks me. I think because it never seems to all come off.

  4. i would say that getting enough sleep is super easy for me…i could sleep all the time! the hardest thing for me is portion control and knowing when i’m satisfied because i eat waaaaaaaay too fast.

i try to keep things different in the food department, but when you find something good there’s no shame in keeping it around for a while 🙂

  5. Jen says:

Check out probiotics in the form of a tiny pill (acidopholis pearls). I take one every day now that I’m pregnant, and it certainly helps with the … going. Between that and running, I’m doing much better with this pregnancy than with the last. 🙂

    • Tina says:

Oh thanks for the tip! I have a friend who swears by probiotics. At my appt next week I’ll ask the midwife about them. I need something.

  6. Nichole says:

    Nice work hubs!!

    That bunny photo is awesome.

You’re right about variety and sleep. Those are my two big sticking points for healthy living.

  7. Hehehe I love the bunny picture! You and I are opposites on the flossing and makeup removal – I always make sure my makeup is off, but I loathe taking the time to floss. I fully admit to lying to my dentist every time he asks how often I do it. The thought of scrounging around in my mouth with a piece of string and fiddling around with trying to get it between my teeth just doesn’t appeal.
On the subject of variety, I NEED food variety! The only problem is, it seems to crank up my grocery bill!

  8. Well…dental hygiene isn’t an issue… That’s about it. I’m not a good role model.

We need to get IN to a rut. We decided that we were spending entirely too much on food, and if we reduce the number of ingredients…win.

  9. Oh pregnancy insomnia is not fun! I have it through my entire pregnancies and can not sleep more than 2 hours at a time. Last night I finally took some Unisom on the advise of my Dr. since the last 4 nights I have not gotten more than 4 hours of sleep each night. Big mistake, the Unisom is still in my system this morning and I can barely feel my legs when I walk. Makes doing daily tasks and chasing after children pretty difficult.

    • Tina says:

I took a sleeping pill before when I had anxiety things that would keep me up too much. Never again. It freaked me out. I hope you’re feeling better and more lively by now.

  10. I am pretty good on the hygiene front. I definitely love to floss/mouthwash/brush at night and I love a clean face to go to bed. There are other things (like laundry) that suffer around here.

I am with you on doing the same foods over and over. I actually crave them though. I think my body just loves the way those foods make it feel so it wants them!

  11. I also eat the same things over and over.

I also have the digestive track of a 90 year old woman — enough said.

I hope you get some adequate rest, that is one thing I’ve been trying to focus on. Getting to bed early and getting enough sleep impacts my whole day, so I really need to do it every night!

  12. I’m the opposite with flossing and makeup. I’m very good at washing my face at night, but not so great with the full teeth routine. I rarely miss brushing my teeth before bed, but I practically never floss.

I don’t think I get in food ruts, but I do get bored of meals sometimes. Currently I’m bored with breakfast. I just can’t think of anything that sounds good!

  13. I find that I actually do better when I don’t allow myself a whole lot of variety in what I eat. While I was on Atkins, I learned to love the food list. But when I tried to switch to the more permissive South Beach plan, I had trouble precisely because there were more choices.

Now that I’m doing the CarbLovers plan, I’ve discovered there’s a reason for that. They quote a study in the book that says some people do better with fewer choices. (Hmm … I sense a blog post coming on!)

  14. I wish I could get more sleep but there is always just too much to do and take care of I never really let myself sleep in

  15. Removing my makeup, working out, eating well aren’t problems, but sleeping is my big one. I have a terrible issue with sleeping regularly.

    Sleep is essential!!!

  16. Holly says:

One of my friends is newly pregnant, and she has SO much trouble “going.” This scares me because I’m a girl who likes to go! 😉 I hope your tummy troubles subside soon. I would imagine that would be the hardest part for me.

I definitely get stuck in food ruts….mainly because I find something I love, and it becomes so EASY to just eat it over and over and over again. I had this recently with salads. I was having them everyday for lunch, but after a couple of months, I got burnt out!

I don’t have too much trouble sticking with working out and eating healthy, but I think more for the mental aspect (I’d go nuts without them!). HowEVER, one thing I need to be better about is getting a good night’s sleep. I was doing so well there for awhile (I usually need about 7-7.5 hours), but lately I’ve slacked. And my body can sure tell! My goal is to get that much sleep at least 5 nights a week. Baby steps!

  17. I need a lot of variety with my food, I get bored very easily.

I used to have a lot of problems with my teeth, but now they’re all fixed, yay! it was a painful experience and I’ll take much better care of them from now on.

Lucky you (and me too) for having a man in the house who can fix computer problems 😀

  18. I have a problem with flossing. I stink at it.

Also, I’m horrible with taking my contacts out. The eye doctor would hate me if she knew.

  19. Mac says:

I definitely have the weekend munchies! I eat very healthy during the week, but when I am thrown out of my normal schedule on the weekends things get out of hand sometimes.

  20. homecookedem says:

I usually have no problem brushing/flossing, working out, eating healthy, and haha, well, I’m a very good pooper! 😉 An area I need to work on is putting lotion on after showering. I used to be so good about it, but I’m really working hard to be better about it.

I get in food ruts sometimes, but when the seasons change that usually helps me out naturally. Like right now I’m eating tons of peaches and strawberries, but in another month will start eating more squash and pumpkin.

  21. I definitely get in food ruts only b/c I love it so much so I’ll eat it over and over. OR I’m in a rut b/c I’m short on time. Story of a mom’s life, no?

  22. I definitely feel ya on the variety bit. Seeing as it’s only me that I cook for, it’s hard to use up all sorts of ingredients before they go bad, so I’m always having to work at being varied in the goodies I eat. I think blogging really forces me outside of that comfort zone, though, because I dont want to post a bowl of cereal every morning!

  23. I don’t have any problem working out because I like doing it. It’s finding the time to do it, that’s the problem. I am busy with my studies right now and sometimes stuck in a library all day when I wish I can be outside to do running.

I tend to make food that are easy and quick, so there are times where I will eat the same thing for several days straight because I have the same ingredients in my refrigeratio. Right now I’m into cabbage stir-fry and have made it many times lately.

  24. Becky says:

    No Problem: Cardio
    Problem: Strength Training

I love exercise, but not all forms. I am trying to find a balance between what I love and what is good for my body.

  25. No problem: Regular dental, eye and medical appointments.

Problem: Taking my makeup off, washing my face immediately after a workout, working out!

It’s hard for me to get motivated lately, especially since I can no longer run. And I love running! I’m working on finding a workout routine that I love!

  26. ashleigh says:

I am with you on the taking off the makeup thing! I am much better than I used to be and my complexion thanks me for it, but I still really hate doing it!

I am always in food ruts. I cook for one and I try to save money so I need to limit the amount of foods I can buy.. It’s a challenge, but I hate wasting food.

  27. Kristy says:

Baaahaha – This post actually made me laugh – out – loud. Super cute! I feel ya on the teeeth brushing thing. 😉

  28. Katie H. says:

Mascara is SUCH a pain to get off. I usually use a facial cleansing cloth first (Ponds or something- although not the most environmentally friendly) and then wash my face. I am reaaalllly bad at remembering to floss my teeth!

I suffer from lack of variety too. I just view it as knowing what I like 🙂
