the labor of love

Posted: September 6, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Happy Labor Day to those of you celebrating! Today goes on like any other day for me. I still woke up by 5:30 am to get some things done and still had plenty to occupy myself throughout the day. I call it a labor of love – for little M, my husband, baby B, the blog, and writing. Luckily, these things don’t feel so much like work and I don’t dread what goes into cultivating those important areas of my life. So, even though I won’t celebrate Labor Day in the traditional way, my labor of love still satisfies. It also helps I already had a fabulous weekend too, though!

Friday night, Peter and I chilled with a movie night. We had rented The Back-Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez, even after hearing some not so great reviews. Overall it was pretty cheesy, but some parts that we could relate to with pregnancy made us laugh.

Saturday, I started the day off on the right foot by taking a 3.5 mile walk on a local walking trail. It freed my mind and I enjoyed the chance to get in a good workout as well as quality time with M. We discussed colors, sang our ABCs, talked about running/walking/biking, and more. It all added up to quality mother-daughter time.

We continued that fun with lunch at home while watching the first UGA football game of the season. Yay for a win! M seems to like football…or mostly she likes the mascot Uga and saying “Gooooo Dawgs! Sic em!” so she can bark. 😉

Things relating to my friend’s wedding filled the rest of the weekend. Saturday night her aunt threw a BBQ night for family and close friends. We spent the night relaxing and laughing with friends outdoors.

I can’t forget the delicious food as well. Oh my! I had a pulled pork sandwich, a crazy sounding but delicious egg/potato/artichoke heart combo, pickle spear, deviled egg, tiny slice of pound cake, strawberry, and mini apple tart.

After church on Sunday, I attended the Bridesmaid’s Luncheon in the afternoon. My friend gifted us all with the jewelry for the wedding, a little makeup case, and some flip-flops to wear at the reception. My feet thank her for that idea!

We also dined on the most delicious Southern girl food. Her mom can somehow make the most traditional and heavy Southern items into light, healthy, and tasty creations. Chicken salad croissant, potato salad, broccoli salad, and a peanut slaw. With fresh fruit and a spinach salad. Well, minus the croissant, mini brownie and petit-four. Nothing light about those!

Even after all of that, we still had more festivities to attend. That night I picked up Peter and Makenzie to head back up to my friend’s parents’ house for her mom’s surprise birthday party. Yet again I ate well (a plate of veggies and one of the wings + a slice of bday cake) and spent time with people I don’t get to see nearly enough.

All that fun did leave me pretty drained today though. I anxiously await Peter to come home from helping work on his sister’s car. This momma needs a break. And a backrub. Braedon has been putting my body through a lot of extra discomfort!

  • What was the highlight of your weekend? I don’t think I can pick one thing this weekend. I already know next weekend’s though! I have a prenatal massage scheduled for Saturday.
  • Did you watch any college football? Or any good movies (even old ones!) if football isn’t your thing?

  1. Ha! Do we watch college football?!?!?! Our life stops completely during the fall.

I went to Notre Dame undergrad, and then Ohio State law. My husband went to Penn State undergrad, and then Villanova masters. All sports schools. And we had 3 wins out of 4 this weekend.

If you ever want to see WAY to much analysis of Penn State football (and a little bit on my schools, or other teams), my husband has a football blog at http://oldstateglory.wordpress.com/

  2. I liked the backup plan I thought it would kind of cute. The luncheon looks like it was a lot of fun. Very cute!!

    xo

  3. Sammy says:

Those cakes look so good. The best part of my weekend was being out in the country with my hubby.I’m easy to please 🙂

  4. Camille says:

    Holy good eats!
Everything about this weekend has been fabulous. My boyfriend and I moved to Oregon last week, so we have been exploring our new town and getting settled.
Actually, now that I think of it, the best thing about this weekend was walking to our local farmer’s market on Saturday. It was a wonderful day!

  5. I love that you are starting M up on her Georgia lover early! so cute!

  6. Lori Lynn says:

Sounds like a really nice weekend, with some good food! I was able to walk on a trail around a lake, and it was really nice weather for it. Today I went to the zoo with my brother and sister-in-law and my 3 1/2 yr old nephew. It was fun, but a tiring morning/early afternoon.

  7. Mark says:

Well we don’t have college football over here, but on Friday we did have some international football (or soccer, if you want to use the unnecessary American term for REAL football :p). Come on England! 🙂

    • Tina says:

Haha! I used to teach Spanish and kids would always get so confused that “futbol” was soccer. They just couldn’t grasp soccer being a big thing in some countries. I was in Germany for the world cup in 2006 and it was amazing!

  8. haha…i heard that movie wasn’t very good but i don’t care: i love me some J-low.

looks like you had a great luncheon! gorgeous food….i can’t believe it was homemade! honestly, at first glance i thought you went to a restaurant. 🙂

  9. That petit-four looks so cute! Sounds like you had a great long weekend. For me, the best part was probably the awesome spin class and Body Pump class I did this morning… it was so great to talk to some people I haven’t seen in a long time, and meet some new faces too. I also had a really nice chat with my sister, whose birthday was on Sunday. (She lives in England, so we don’t get to see each other much.) All in all, a great weekend! 🙂

  10. Kat says:

Looks like a weekend of yummy food!! I LOVE college football. I am actually a sports nut, so I follow most sports. There’s just something about football that gets me crazy though!! Only during football season I drink diet cokes. I have one every sunday when I am watching NFL games. Throughout the year when football is in offseason though, I never have one. I’m crazy like that!!

  11. homecookedem says:

My sister was just telling me last night that I need to see the Back-Up Plan.

All of that southern food sounds wonderful!! And that cake… looks… amazing!!

You’ll have to email me where and how much this prenatal massage is! I need one baaaaaaad!! haha!! 🙂

Best part of my weekend was a cookout at my mom’s eating lots of yummy food surrounded by the people I love the most in the world!! And lots of Baby Boy kicks!! 🙂

  12. Looks like you enjoyed some great eats and great friends this weekend! So glad you had fun. The weather was gorgeous, wasn’t it?! I hope you have a great night too Tina!

  13. I love the dog in The Back Up Plan!
What a busy weekend for you! Full of yummy food though 🙂 I don’t watch college football, but I love me some Georgia gym dogs!

  14. The bridal shower pics are lovely! you look sooo pretty!!!

  15. Ashley says:

Oh my gosh, as a bride-to-be I am salivating over those bridal shower pix! Love it! Looks like your weekend contained some excellent eats.

The highlight of my weekend was my 10K run — recap coming tomorrow 🙂

  16. Such a cute blue dress! I love college football! I went to Virginia Tech and we lived and breathed football every weekend. Watching right now 🙂

  17. Look at all those beautiful nomnoms! Great pictures! Foodography rocks.
We watched “The Backup Plan” last weekend and I give it a C. (I like to give movies a grade.) Kinda lame!

  18. I watched The Backup Plan just today since I had the day off. There were a few laugh out loud moments, but it pretty much fell into the regular romantic comedy cheesy category…

Glad you had a great weekend! The blue dress is super cute…

  19. Jenna says:

I wanted to see the back up plan

    • Jenna says:

it caught me off haha. I wanted to see that! Your food this looks so yummy and colorful at the bridesmaids luncheon..It makes me excited for my sister’s luncheon 🙂

  20. Ashlee says:

Hey Tina! I just started following you and didn’t realize you were pregnant! Congratulations! I thought the back up plan was cute but I fell asleep 🙁 I think my husband liked it more than me but he is into cheesy movies!

    • Tina says:

My husband likes the cheesy movies too. It definitely wasn’t a stellar movie, but not too terrible. And yep. I’m just over halfway through this pregnancy.

  21. Kristy says:

Justed want to let you know that your balanced “humanized” pregnancy makes me feel a whole lot better about the unknown 🙂

    • Tina says:

LOL! Glad I can show a more real version. When we watched the movie we even said that they were really playing up the big stuff. I guess it makes for good comedy though.

  22. Hey Love!! What a great sounding weekend you had! I hear ya, my day was jam packed with stuff today too….I am finally relaxing now!

Aww I liked the backup plan. I think they were cute together 🙂

I hope you have a great rest of your night! I could eat that cupcake right now…

    xxoo

  23. I grew up in a college town half a block from the football stadium! I’m pretty sure it’s in my blood! 🙂

    • Tina says:

Yea. College football becomes part of you at some point. The roars of the crowd were probably your lullaby at night during the fall.

  24. Great pics! I love the pink place mats that the pastries are on.

  25. What a cute bridal luncheon. I love all the southern inspired foods, such a cute theme! The hi light of my weekend was probably sitting at the table next to Steve- o at breakfast sunday morning. odd, but cool. And a little bike ride this afternoon was lovely. Have an awesome week!

  26. You lucky girl! So many parties! 🙂 I can definitely imagine how all that can leave a person drained too! Your food pics look so yummy! I gotta go eat breakfast before I salivate all over my keyboard. lol.

This weekend, we definitely tuned into the college football at our house. My boyfriend is a HUGE Clemson fan, so all Saturdays between now and October/November are “football days.” I secretly don’t mind–I kind of like having something to root for 🙂

    • Tina says:

I’m the huge football fanatic between Peter & I. He’s more into cars and home projects and things over sports. But I’ve gotten him more into it. He tries to pretend he’s not, but he is! 😀

  27. Shannon says:

We watched the Backup Plan this weekend too. Definitely the standard romantic comendy. But I’m a sucker for those 🙂

The best part of my weekend was kyacking on Saturday. I needed a little convincing because the couch felt like a much more comfortable spot, but it ended up being great to be outside. I think it will be my last kyacking adventure until after the baby though…all that core work got those Braxton Hicks going. Don’t want to illicit the real thing as I get closer to the end!

    • Tina says:

Yea, be careful with that. I remember towards the end walking enough would get them going. So annoying…and sometimes even a little painful. Blah! Glad you got to enjoy kayaking one more time before baby.

  28. Sounds like a busy, but fun day. I haven’t seen that movie yet. I imagine it’ll end up on the Netflix queue at some point. Sometimes it’s fun to watch silly, uncomplicated movies.

  29. Sami says:

what a beautiful luncheon!! you look like you’re completely glowing. blue is def. a good color on you! 🙂 i also love the sunflower idea on the tables! too cute! they’re my fav. flower, i think!

    • Tina says:

It really was all so nice. I definitely don’t have that sort of organization and planning in me for all those details. Hope you had a good weekend too! 😉

  30. Wow girl.. that is some delicious food!

  31. Uh, all that food looks so good. And you too, you’re so cute in your dress 🙂

  32. Lisa Jordan says:
