30 days of self love – finding joy

Posted: September 14, 2010 at 8:23 am

Goood morning! I sincerely hope today finds you all well. I feel fabulous because I took today’s message to heart already.

In life, we all search for happiness. We want fulfillment and to live with contentment. In order to find such a life, we have to take the first steps in finding joy in each day. From the small moments of a child’s laugh to the bigger “wow” moments of exciting vacations and celebrations, we must reach out and grab joy each day.

I don’t think I need to tell you why finding joy in everyday moments of life can increase overall happiness. We all have that logic. Instead, I want to ask you to find it for yourselves today. Don’t avoid it for fear it will get in the way of to-dos. Don’t convince yourself another moment will come soon enough. Don’t hesitate on whether you deserve that moment of joy. Just take it. And walk away with a smile.

This post is more brief because I did just that this morning. In lieu of waking up by no later than 6:00 to spend an hour writing a 30 Days post like I do every other morning, I just now rolled out of bed. I grabbed my joy today by spending two extra hours cuddled up in bed with my husband. Talking to him, snuggling him, and loving him. Do the same in your day.

What will bring YOU joy? It’s yours for the taking….so take. 🙂

Quotes to Reflect On
The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness.  You have to catch it yourself.  ~Benjamin Franklin

  1. Want to know what I’m taking joy in? I put on a pair of hot, peep toe purple booties today…and they’re making me feel absolutely amazing! I haven’t been able to wear them yet, because I was too heavy and they hurt. Now, I look at my mile long legs and grin. 🙂

I’m also gaining joy out of the beautiful morning drive through the mountains…the leaves are turning…and I’m lucky to be alive.

  2. You are so totally right. It is important to embrace what brings you joy in life! I too find myself guilty of getting into routines and not taking the time to take in the special moments. Living with my boyfriend definitely brings me joy and is something I should cherish a lot more. I mean, I do cherish it but I don’t take the time to enjoy the moments as much as I do, with being busy with work and gym time. Next time I will prepare my lunch the night before to snuggle with the bf in the morning, and I will skip the gym to cook an extra special meal for him and just cuddle on the couch and hang out. And talk. 🙂

  3. Shannon says:

I’m starting the couch to 5 K running program this morning. I’ll take joy in the fresh air and sunshine that I get to run in. I’m also currently fostering 6 10 week old kittens. I’ll take joy in their cuteness and kitteny antics. They are so much fun. I find joy in talking to my friends and yes, even in being back at school because I’m on my way to being able to do something I have passion in and that I love. Oh, I love Melissa’s comment. I’m not gonna put on a pair of grungy jeans and flip flops to run errands. Fall is in the air and I’m gonna wear my peep-toe zebra print wedges and I’ll take joy in those too because before long they’ll be snow on the ground.

  4. Kristy says:

I once found this quote tah spoke to me: “Happiness isnt having what you want it is wanting what you have”.

We truly do have the power to create our happiness.

  5. Wonderful inspiration to get my work-day off on the right foot! You’re definitely right, Tina–it’s critical to take the time and patience to find joy in the simplest of things. This was a wonderful reminder of what direction I want my Tuesday to go toward. Thank you!

Hope you have a great day 🙂

  6. Mellissa says:

Today I am finding joy in a cute brown skirt and orange sweater, the fact that the leaves are about to start changing and I manage to drink my protein shake after my workout without spilling on myself!

  7. Joy can slip through our fingers and our days if we don’t take time to soak it up, can’t it? Some days I have to remind myself that you can search for the bad or you can search for the good in your day. I much prefer good!

So today my joy is in the baked apple oatmeal I am about to enjoy, the cool crisp air outside and the extra few minutes I had with my husband before the work day began.

  8. Jess says:

Once again, this was SO message was SO needed today. I am struggling to find my joy in the face of a very difficult work situation/environment that threatens to steal my joy every single day. I’ve been battling it for quite awhile and have tried every “trick” I can think of to bring that joy back, even if I have to fake it a little bit. You’re right though – it IS in me, I just have to let it out and not let the negative in my day overshadow the joy in my life. Today’s joy? Taking a much-needed rest day in favor of extra sleep next to my husband this morning, cuddled under an extra blanket with the cool fall air wafting into the bedroom. Joy.

  9. I find joy in the simple things….like being able to still walk to and from work!

  10. Stacy says:

I found joy today jamming out to my fave songs in the car today instead of getting bothered by morning traffic.
I found joy today that my puppy dog with her sad face convinced me to go for a brisk walk this morning 🙂

  11. i just love quotes and you’ve found so many great ones to share over these 30 days!!

I find joy in the sunshine and that gets me started on a great note every day in the sunshine state 🙂

  12. Amelia says:

I’m taking joy in the beautiful weather and the fact that I get to see some friends today that I have not seen in a while!

  13. AWESOME post! I’m taking joy in that today is my first day of my new volunteer job! I’ll be reading to two elementary school students for an hour each week as a part of a non-profit group that promotes literacy in Chicago.

I will also take joy in the never-ending summer sunshine. It’s nearly fall, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. I have to relish in that because we’ll have snow before I know it 🙂

    Have a fab Tuesday everyone!

  14. […] post was about Joy – and finding it within you versus relying on circumstances to create joy. And boy, do I need to […]

  15. Jolene says:

LOVE this one…so posting on it today.

  16. I love the quote about joy being in us – not in things. So true! I could be joyful that I get to see my pup on my lunch break or mad that I’m at work now. I’ll choose the former:)

  17. Penny Lane says:

I am taking joy in the cool weather that is blessing this morning while I am able to make the uncommon weekday trip to the dog park. I will take joy in grandmas repaired eye this afternoon and take joy in the childless hike tonight.

  18. I love concerts, and Sunday night I got the opportunity to go see John Legend. I had purchased tickets as soon as they went on sale and the seats were in the middle of row five so he was like right there, which was great, because you can’t beat the joy of being able to stand and dance to good live music. But the part that brought me most joy? My daughter and her boyfriend came with me, as I don’t have many (any) friends who were up for a Sunday night concert, and they were fun and they had fun, even though they had spent the weekend at a vacation home three hours away with like twenty college friends, had a nearly two hour drive home after the concert, and had to get up early for work the next morning. Their willingness to happily go that far out of their way to spend the evening with me brings me a great big smile on my face still today.

  19. What a great topic!
Today I will take joy in a walk in the cool fresh air.

  20. Astrid says:

Finding joy goes right back to perspective. This morning, I ironed my boyfriend’s dress pants for an interview and made his lunch. The entire time I was grumbling to myself, because I felt like such a mom to him. I didn’t find the joy in that moment. But I wish I had! It’s nice to have someone to take care of and to have them appreciate it. There is joy in that.

  21. Joy is my puppy’s smelly kisses 🙂

& knowing I can love my GA bulldawgs no matter how they look against stupid Spurrier’s team 😉

  22. having an authentic relationship with God is the only thing that has brought me pure, unadulterated joy. and i fully plan on keeping that up 🙂

Be JOYFUL in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer – Romans 12:12

  23. Another great post! I find that I need to take more time to find joy in the little things. I’ve learned more and more that I literally need to stop and smell the roses more! Life just goes so fast, we all need to relish in eat moment!

  24. Ela says:

Hey, sweet serendipity! I went back to bed for some extra snuggling with my husband this morning too!

It’s still early here – I’ll comment again with a link to my blog post later.

Thanks for such an uplifting start to the day!

  25. Shayna says:

I find my joy in the fact that I have a roof over my head, food in my belly and a job 🙂 Now, I must purchase peeptoes, because it sounds like everyone has cooler shoes than me 😀

  26. I have to ditto what Shayna above me said. I feel blessed that we have a shelter, food, clothes and our children. We may not have a ton of money in the bank but we certainly aren’t lacking for the necessities.

    Love your posts, chickie. 🙂

  27. I love this! Even in the worst of times, there is something that we can be grateful for and find joy in. When I am having a bad day, I remind myself to think of all the great things that happened that day–helping a kid out at school, doing something nice for my husband, a funny joke shared between co-workers–it puts things in perspective 🙂

  28. Angela says:

You’re so right! Today, I’m taking joy in spending time with myself and relaxing, doing things that are good for my body like stretching and nourishing it with wholesome, nutritious food (and a little Starbucks for good measure!) 🙂 I also get so much joy out of just talking with friends. I don’t need to spend money on going out and being entertained – I’m perfectly content just sitting at home and having a good chat!

  29. Love this.. and I so needed it. With things not the best right now, it’s hard for me to see joy in the little things in life too. I’m really trying because I KNOW I am blessed and if I look, I will find joy. It’s simply sometimes hard to accept and allow myself to be happy.

  30. Hmm … I’m going to concentrate on finding joy today. (I know — that was your goal!) Love the Ben Franklin quote, by the way.

  31. Kelly says:

I take joy in the little things like warm oatmeal, crisp fall mornings (almost there!) and purple fingernails. 🙂 I’m so busy at work lately, it’s hard to savor these little things. Thanks for the reminder!

  32. Susan says:

I love this, I am ALL about finding the little joys in things. I went through a very unhappy period last fall, and I relied on finding sweet moments in the every day to get through it. It’s something I still do, and thankfully there are a lot more of them these days 🙂 Right now I am finding joy in having the comfiest chair in Starbucks and some downtime to work on my computer between clients. Later, I will find joy in inspiring (and pushing!) people at the gym, then staying up late because I finally have a late morning tomorrow 😉

  33. Holly says:

I always can find joy in spending time with my family and close friends. They always have a way of making my troubles seem trivial, and putting a smile on my face!

  34. Kelly says:

My joy today comes from simple yet very important things. I woke up this morning. I was able to take breath in my lungs and put my feet on the floor. Someone else wasn’t so lucky. I am able to get up before the roosters and workout. My body is strong. I am able to walk to and from work every day (once I take the train downtown). While I’m walking to work I am able to breathe in the crisp Fall-like air and take in the brilliant sun. Enjoy your day!

  35. Those quotes gave me chills! I love all of them!

  36. What I love most about this is the title – FINDING joy. Great reminder that I don’t have to wait for joy to appear for me out of thin air; it’s already there, and it’s up to me to go and get it 🙂

  37. I love the extra cuddle time this morning….that’s inspiring in itself 🙂

  38. I LOVE that quote!

Today Im finding joy in the knowledge that after work the boyfriend and I are going to my parents house to hang out with my mom. We wont do much. I’ll steal their internet, and my boyfriend will do a crossword with my mom. Nothing exciting, but its always fun.

  39. Joy is all around me, I just need to stop and look at it! I love sleeping in a few extra minutes, getting my back scratched or just laying together 🙂 I find joy on my way to work: seeing the birds flying through the air, listening to the radio, feeling good about NOT rushing to work like everyone else seems to be!

I find joy in the food I make, in the exercise I do, in the way my body feels, in seeing my husband when he comes home from work, etc. Joy is all around!

  40. homecookedem says:

I find joy in simple things like eating a meal with my husband, taking a walk with my dog, and sending an email to a friend… just because! 🙂 Happiness and joy are everywhere, we just have to take the time to notice it!! 🙂

  41. LOVE IT! We do always need to take time to find joy! Good for you! I know I’ve found Joy today by making my dinner. I put my ingredients in the crock pot and my bread ingredients in my bread maker. I know how nice it will feel when i sit down to my dinner!

  42. […] post today was all about finding joy, and while I feel as though right now, I clearly have a lot of joy in the “Doctor Boy” […]

  43. Julie says:

I found joy today in the chiropractor’s office. I had no idea I would be getting a fantastic leg massage, but boy, what a surprise to walk in thinking they were going to have me doing painful stretches only to be met with Ivan, the masseur!!!

It’s the surprise joy that caught me off guard today! Mine kind of came out of thin air, but like Katie (at Health For The Whole Self) said – “Joy is already there, it’s up to me to go out and get it.”
I LOVE THAT, Katie!!…and I’ll be doing that the rest of today.

  44. Eliza says:

I posted about this on my blog, because I felt like I had a lot to say….thanks for the inspiration

  45. LindseyAnn says:

    My joy today? OK!
We’re in the process of repainting our apartment. I surprised my boyfriend and took care of a large portion of it in an 8 hour painting marathon today. Now, instead of spending his day off tomorrow painting, he and I can just relax together. Joy for both of us!
During said painting marathon, I rocked out to a Journey station on Pandora.com. It was pretty darn epic, and Steven Tyler and Steve Perry (Journey’s lead singer) don’t have anything on me when I’m in RockStar mode. 😉 😀
Then, after said painting, I was treated to ice cream. Joy! 😀

  46. […] This will be my third post of the day, and second most recently.  This is a short post, but I really wanted to take the time to write about today’s Lead topic of 30 Days of Self Love.  Check out Tina’s blog post here. […]

  47. I created a small 30 minute window of joy in my life today by meeting up with my husband.

    Check out my post:

  48. Maren says:

Wow, this post talked about things I was dealing with today. I fall deep into frustration and depression sometimes and with my ankle surgery recuperation I’ve been really struggling. Last night and this morning I just couldn’t find joy or happiness at all. Your post helped me so much, and completely brought me out of the darkness. Thank you so much Tina! I hope all is well with you and your family. I can’t wait for Baby Boy FFF to come ;-).
