i’m not crazy, i’m quirky!

Posted: October 15, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Back in high school my tagline definitely wasn’t “because life is more than diet and workouts” like today. My tagline simply stated “I’m not crazy, I’m QUIRKY!” I even shouted that in the halls once before kicking my good friend Thomas in the shin the afternoon before the BIG game. Obviously, I was very mature. And he was very kind to stay friends with me after that.

My quirky nature has not ended. My sense of humor still rivals that of a teenage boy. I still employ sarcasm as often as possible. I still dance around the room singing “jiggety jag, jiggety jag” with my sister to drive Peter crazy. Don’t ask. And I still have so many odd preferences and quirks that won’t change.

I’m not crazy, I’m just quirky for…

…refusing to sleep with sheets. We have the fitted sheet and a comforter on our bed. I hate sheets. I get all tangled and I prefer feeling a soft blanket against my skin seeing as I tend to sleep, ahem, nude or just in panties. I also need four pillows to sleep comfortably right now.

IMGP7757

….for FREAKING out if someone turns the lights off while I am in the bathroom. I have yet to recover from the scary Bloody Mary stories of my childhood and an evil practical joke my friend’s older sister played.

…for wondering strange things. While making my coffee this morning, my train of thought went to “I wonder what would happen if you brewed the coffee with milk instead of water? Would that work?” I don’t even like much milk in my coffee so why would I even think that? My mind has no rhyme or reason.

…for automatically thinking “Is it skin cancer?!” when I discover a strange spot on my arm and cannot figure out where it came from or what it is. I think it’s a bruise, though. I get bruises without knowing how quite often.

IMGP7763

…for having to pinch M’s little booty cheeks after every bath. I just can’t resist! I wonder at what age that becomes extraordinarily inappropriate? And while we’re on that topic, at what age does it become inappropriate to shower with her, which I do regularly?

IMGP7754

for eating a goat for breakfast. More accurately, for being lame to see if you’re still paying attention.

…for having an intense distaste for anything resembling soggy bread. I will never try bread pudding. But, come to think of it, I will eat stuffing at Thanksgiving.

for sitting on the floor to take pictures of my food before eating. The hardwood floors make for a prettier background!

IMGP7677

…for using word like “Shitake mushrooms!”, “Ohhh…cean”, “Frickin A!”, etc as my cusswords. It’s better than my mom’s favorite - “Oh poodleheads!” No joke.

for singing the Ariel song “Part of Your World” from memory, start to finish, just because I can.

Clearly I have no clue where Makenzie gets her quirks from – like having to arrange my shoes perfectly lined up in an arc every time she comes in our room.  At least she does that and not something that makes me shout, “Oh poodleheads!!”

  1. Quirks are what make people fun!
I randomly burst into song at my desk, and sometimes I just make noises. I dont know why, or even what they are, I just do it. 🙂

  2. LOL – love this. I may have to borrow the idea for next Friday’s post 😉 My sister and I always say we’re not crazy, just quirky. So I’m right there with you. It makes life more fun I do believe. That’s my excuse anyway. I have to sleep on the side of the bed closest to the bathroom. Oh, bread pudding is nothing like soggy bread. But be forewarned, do not eat an entire serving. It feels like it expands in your belly. I slept sitting up one night after eating an entire “serving”

  3. I LOVE THIS !!

we don’t have a sheet either. just the fitted one, and blanket + comforter. I just have to wash the comforters more, but … I do that anyway.

When I read breakfast goat I just figured you were going to go on to say, goat CHEESE or yogurt or something. then you made me laugh. 😀

I GAAH cringe at soggy bread – yet LOVE bread pudding. you should try, especially if you like dressing / stuffing… oh, YUM.

Awesome post 🙂 I always told people I was eclectic! I hate soggy bread too which is why I would never eat sandwiches that my mom would pack me in my lunch. Bread pudding just sounds weird…lol but I’ll put spinach in a smoothie.

One of my quirks is that I hate sharing popcorn. I flip out if anyone tries to eat my popcorn if I’m still eating it. That’s how much I love popcorn 🙂 It’s become an inside joke in my family.

  5. Karen says:

I LOVE The Little Mermaid! When the girls watch the movie I try to sing along with the songs but I’m usually asked not to sing by my little munchkin. I know every word to every song in that movie!

  6. Lindsey says:

haha, I HATE sheets too! I’ve tried to like them, but I don’t. Can’t stand em’!

  7. Katrina says:

Oh you are WRONG for that pic of Bloody Mary!!! But you redeemed yourself with Little Mermaid. That movie makes me smile and No, not because of the original VHS cover with the “adult” themed castle art.

One of my quirks….I make lists. tons of lists. I have lists to make more lists. I’m sure I would qualify for some medication but I like me this way. 😀

  8. Sava says:

If I am doing something that can be tracked and graphed or charted in some way, I am SO MUCH MORE likely to be consistent about it.

For example, One of the primary motivating factors in exercise is that when I enter it into dailymile.com it will add to my exercise graph 😀

  9. Mmmm goat for breakfast, sounds great. I currently have bread pudding baking in the oven! My first time ever making/trying it so we will see. irony

I hate soups with chunks, especially with noodles. If it is creamy based or not really watered down I’ll take it. But chicken noodle soup is a no go! The combination of textures freak me out. :p

  10. Natalie says:

I totally remember when my sister told me about Bloody Mary and I didn’t sleep for what felt like a week! Traumatized!

I hate the top sheet too, but I have never thought to just take it off the bed…who would’ve thought, you don’t have to follow the “rules”!

  11. Becca says:

I am most definitely quirky! =)

    Just to name a couple:
I call the fact I blush super easily a quirk.
I HAVE to type in complete sentences when texting. Unless I run out of characters…
I watch people’s feet. Don’t ask why, I just do.

On stuffing: LOVE. Don’t put it in front of me at Thanksgiving or it’ll be gone! Lol. 😀

  12. Shannon says:

I don’t mind sheets (or pillows. There are 6 on my bed, plus throws and I’m single and not pregnant) but I hate pants and sleepves when I sleep. Those I get tangled up in, so I typically wear tank tops and underwear to bed. Even in the dead of winter and I live in Canada.

I have nicknames for everyone, some of which could be considered offensive but which I mean with nothing but love. My goddaughter is lentil and her mom is preggo or my baby mama. Same goes for my cats, whose nicknames often become songs that I sing while doing mundane tasks like dishes. Everything is better with music, even terrible music.

I love seeing things crossed off my to-do list so much that sometimes I write them on the list after I’ve done, just to be able to cross them off. Oh sastifiction

  13. Camille says:

Haha, I have wondered the same thing about brewing coffee with milk! I have refrained from doing it because I am scared of breaking my coffee maker 🙂
I am quirky because whenever I listen to anything with a volume control (the TV, the car radio, my iHome, etc) the volume must always be in an increment of 5. I will actually start panicking if it isn’t. Actually, I think that is crazy…

  14. Lee says:

I hate sleeping with a top sheet too. I just don’t see the point of it and it always gets all twisted up. Jason always tries to sneak it back on the bed.

  15. Haha! I say “shitake mushroom”, too, and usually make up my own PG curse words Ha:)

One of my quirks is that I have to sit in the corner or at least with my back to the corner in resteraunts Ha!

  16. Tina, you and I are two quirks in a pod! (Does that even make sense?!)

    1) I will forever be scarred by the “Bloody Mary” picture you just posted. 😉

    2) I still squish my baby girl’s booty (she’s almost 4!) and I’ll continue to do it, probably until she’s 16. lol! Oh and showering… when they starting saying things like, “I don’t want hair on my butt (she calls her vagnia her butt)” and pushing your boobs because it’s fun. Probably time to stop showing/bathing together. 😉 Of course, that isn’t from personal experience or anything……….

    3) You are SO missing out on bread pudding!

    4) I was literally lol when I read your “cuss” words. I’m totally stealing them!

    5) We’ll have to have a “Part of Your World” show down. I often break out in this song at the oddest of times.

    6) My DD feels a need to line things up perfectly as well. I figured she inherited by type-A personality.

  17. Allie Finch says:

    This is a fun post.
Quirks make life more interesting…or weird, I don’t know.
    – “Part of Your World”, yeah I rock that one too,
    – but I really hate hard breads. Growing up we ate sugary cereal & white bread — I LOVED dipping my buttered toast in the sweet milk. I still crave that, so sometimes, I have my toast with rice milk [which is pretty sweet itself].
    – I love sheets & will just wrap up in one while reading or watching a movie.
    – My clothes are organized in a very particular way, by color, then tanks progressing to longer sleeves.
I’m sure I have many quirks I don’t even realize are quirks…like getting up before the sun & going to bed at like 9am 😛

  18. I sat and thought, “goat? what did she mean to say a good breakfast? what? I don’t get it?” when I could have simply just read the next sentence… fail.

I dated this guy in college who didn’t like sheets. I love having sheets. Needless to say, I hated staying at his place… lol

  19. Goat is delicious. But I think it still belongs in the “lunch” category. Although here in moz, i have eaten goat for breakfast. and gazelle. true story.

does that count as a quirk?

    • Tina says:

LOL Only you would actually have had it for breakfast. I love all the things you can share from living there. 🙂

  20. Loriana says:

Too funny! I love the “poodleheads”, my dad has always said “oh tiddliewinks” haha!

  21. Your posts are always SO much fun!

My hubby is the same way with soggy bread – poor guy will NOT eat French Toast because of it (and can barely choke down stuffing). I think he’s definitely missing out! I actually like soggy bread sometimes – I think the BEST part of a sub is the bread at the end that gets all soaked in the oil/vinegar. YUM!

My biggest quirk though? Every now and then I will randomly start singing Yankee Doodle Dandy at the top of my lunch while marching (yes, marching with “high knees”) around the house. I’m such a dork!

  22. homecookedem says:

Hehe, quirky people are the BEST!! I myself am definitely quirky and I’m married to a very quirky man! 😉 I sleep with 4 pillows too!

  23. I don’t do soggy bread either…or soggy cereal. I feel like I’m one of the only people on the planet who doesn’t eat cereal-its too dry and I won’t put milk on it because then it becomes soggy!

I also rarely finish sandwiches. When I’ve eaten all but the last 1/4, I remove the filling, eat it and leave the bread.

  24. I love the quirks! I am the same with bathroom lights off- Bloody Mary still enters my mind too (glad I’m not the only one), and also with the skin cancer. I think every new freckle or bruise could be skin cancer!

  25. Robyn says:

    Tina
Very neat post idea and replys.

I love bread pudding, my Mom makes the best. I do NOT like french toast. I know they are basically the same bread and eggs. My husband is the opposite.

I am a list maker also and agree with loving the check things off.

I am going to say one of my quirks, that is different from many on this post, is that I sleep w/ my socks on and usually in pj pant and shirt and sometimes a sweatshirt or hoodie. What can I say I am cold blooded.

When I fill my car w/ gas I always do my best to stop on an even dollar amount or to the nearest quarter.

  26. Melissa says:

Neat post idea. Some of my quirks:
I get really upset if I forget my deoderant in the morning, which is rare. But I once missed a class in college because I had to go to the store to buy deoderant because I forgot to put it on. Now I keep some in my purse.
I get really annoyed with sounds of someone breathing or scraping their fork while eating. But if someone makes a sound I like, I often repeat it.
When I heat something in the microwave, I count down in my head the last 10 or so seconds with the timer.

  27. I just wrote on another blog how I love reading about people’s random facts / quirks.. this was so much fun! 🙂

  28. Ela says:

Loved this post – so lighthearted and fun! And I love that we are all quirky – in cute and various ways.

How am I quirky? Let me count the ways… No, seriously…
I’m quirky because I’m incapable of following a recipe without modifying it in at least one way.
I’m quirky because I can let things go pretty badly in terms of housecleaning but can’t stand it if a single dish is dirty for a minute longer than immediately after a meal.
I’m quirky because I live in Alaska and still insist on sleeping naked!

    love
    Ela

  29. janetha says:

Oh my gosh, I am the same way with sheets! Hate them. This post was so fun to read.

  30. janetha says:

I forgot to say I feel the same way re: mirrors in the dark. So funny.
