walmart made me cry

Posted: November 8, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Is Monday over yet? I mentioned in my earlier post that today felt like a Monday. My visit to Walmart only solidified that statement.

I guess I should clarify that they did make me cry…but I managed to make it to my car before letting the tears loose. Although the man who caused them probably could have used that guilt trip. So, what happened?

This upcoming weekend, we hope to get the two kiddo’s rooms painted and set Makenzie up in her new room to have time to adjust before baby B arrives. We needed to get bedding for her before then, so Peter found a really good deal online from Walmart. I went there today to pick up our order and get a few groceries.

Within the first minute of arriving, I already dreaded dealing with Walmart. The woman at the front who is supposed to greet you as you come in and have buggies set out ready for customers? She just stared at me, a 7.5 months pregnant woman hauling a 2 year old + bag + child’s sippy cup. No hello. No smile. No buggy assistance. And even no help as I dropped the bag and cup while trying to get a wriggling kid into the cart I pulled out myself. Grrrrrr….

That’s not the worst of it though. Oh no. I went to the site-to-store shipping pick up area where a woman who had no clue what she was doing tried to help me. I felt sympathetic for her since she was obviously new…and didn’t speak English well, which likely made it more difficult. She kept telling me she had no order for me, but that was because she kept spelling my name wrong when pulling up the order. Then, when we finally got the order information she couldn’t find it in the back and had to wait for someone to help her. Fifteen minutes later I had the bedding.

But I still needed a receipt to verify my purchase of the quilt. She didn’t know how to print the stupid receipt either! By this point, Makenzie was getting extremely restless and starting to fuss and/or climb out of the cart. After another few minutes the woman finally claims she has my receipt and sends me on my way. I go to check out and pay for my other groceries, and then, the fun begins.

After scanning all my other items, the woman at the register asks me to pull the item from my undercart for her to scan it. I tell her it’s already been paid for and show her the receipt I picked up before. She then says that it isn’t a receipt for that item and calls a manager. Are you kidding me?! The manager comes over and also tells me that is not a receipt for the item and I either need to find the correct one or pay for the item.

I get that he was just doing his job…but in a pretty rude and condescending manner. In a roundabout way he accused me of trying to steal the quilt. I tell him about the woman who helped me before and that perhaps it was a mistake. He sends someone to find her to verify I had paid already. You guessed it. They couldn’t find her. This is unreal!!! Finally after another 5 minutes (and a look I wish I could have smacked off that manager’s face) they find her, clear everything up, and send me on my way. With a “thank you, ma’am”. And a parting gift of a headache, cranky child, pain in my lower back from standing so much with the sciatic issue I’m facing today. How nice of them, don’t you think?

I’m so sorry about your very cruddy Walmart experience.
I don’t shop there, and this just confirms why 🙁
    Hope your day got better!

  2. ((((( HUGS )))))

That’s what you need. That’s what the staff of Wal Mart sounds like they need. Unnecessary treatment. So sorry.

    (( HUGS ))

  3. Rebecca says:

I completely feel your Walmart pain. I’m glad it all worked out, it’s just too bad you had to go through the frustration.

  4. G says:

Arg, I can relate to this – horrible customer service is one of the things that angers me the most. You have all the right in the world to be upset!!! I find that because I still look like I’m in highschool (or so I’m told), employees don’t find it necessary to treat me with respect and just ignore me. When this happens, I promptly take my business elsewhere!

  5. UGHHHH . I would have seriously lost it in a situation like this. Sometimes I have no patience for inconsiderate people. Sending you virtual hugs- your a strong woman for dealing with all that plus having M at your side! Just ask your hubs for a massage for your sciatic pain, that should hopefully make up for it 🙂

  6. Sorry that happened to you. This totally reconfirms why I won’t shop at Walmart, every time I go in I just can’t wait to get out and any savings that could be had there are not worth the otherwise terrible experience.

  7. I hate dealing with/going to walmart, even if it is so cheap. I’m so sorry you had to deal with this 🙁

  8. Leah @ L4L says:

I actually have boycotted Walmart. I despise them. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. 🙁 HUGS!

  9. Ilana says:

I have a super serious love-hate relationship with grocery shopping. I don’t drive, so I walk a few blocks to shop – sometimes I go a subway ride away. I love picking out food and I don’t usually dread the way home unless it’s cold, but my local grocery store has these super-sketchy stockboys who just…stare. and stare. and stare. and talk about me in Spanish. And I want to rip my hair out. If I didn’t need the cheap fresh produce from the closest place available…ugh!!

    • Tina says:

I once had dudes talking about me in Spanish at a grocery store in my college town. I look like a total white girl, as you know, but also speak Spanish. One of them said something pretty provocative and I remember whipping around and saying in Spanish “Would you say that to your mom?!” Their faces were PRICELESS!

Sorry you have to deal with that though. It is frustrating.

  10. LindseyAnn says:

I’ve worked more customer service than a person should ever have to, and this made me mad. There’s no excuse for being rude, there’s no excuse for leaving someone untrained on their own, there’s no excuse for any of that!! Ugh.
I think a letter to the management of that store is in order.

Sorry you had a rough day!

  11. Oh I absolutely hate Wal-Mart! Dread it every time I walk into that place! If I only need a few things, I will actually drive a little farther and go spend a few extra cents on things, just to avoid that store! I just can’t believe they would accuse you of stealing! My goodness…so much for the Customer is always right! 🙂

  12. Leashieloo says:

I also haven’t had good experiences at Walmart. Their customer service is really cranky and unprofessional, in my opinion.

  13. Camille says:

Oh Walmart, they never fail to provide the worst customer service in the world.
I was in there a few weeks ago trying to buy a bike. I never ever shop at Walmart (because it is the devil) but the specific bike I wanted was only sold there so I just sucked it up and drove the 25 minutes to the closest Walmart. When I got there we couldn’t find the bike on display so we went to customer service to have them look it up. Now, mind you, I have worked at Best Buy so I am completely aware of what they can and can’t do as far as looking products up. If they ever tell you that they can’t check in their system to see if they have or will be getting something, that is a giant lie. So the woman told me that, regardless of the fact that I had the SKU for the product and the name, she couldn’t look it up for me. I asked her why not and she said, “I don’t know, I just can’t.”
I proceeded to tell her that she had just given me the worst customer service I had ever encountered and I would never dream of buying anything from their store again.
Off I went to Sports Authority and bought a wonderful bike from an employee who spent 45 minutes talking me through the different options.
    Walmart can burn.
    The end.

  14. Ick. Walmart is so depressing. Sorry you had to go through that!

  15. Angela says:

Awww I thought I had a bad day but I am sending you a big virtual hug because that sounds awful!! How rude of them. Clearly customer service is not their strong point. One errand I hate running is getting gas. I’ll drive my car until the meter is verging on E, then suck it up and go to the gas station (unfortunately for me, this always seems to be immediately AFTER the gas prices go up….. just my luck!)

  16. Jess says:

AW! Hugs to you, friend. I can’t stand poor customer service, especially for someone who obviously needed a hand, you and your daughter, pregnant belly and all. Ugh! I swear – everyone should have to work in the customer service industry at some point in their life – then they’ll never give poor service, since we all know how it feels to receive it. Ergh! And I’m with you on today feeling like Monday…in every sense of the word. Oof.

  17. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
I am going to cry just imagining how frustrated you were!!!!

I hear SOOO many horror stories about Wal-Mart, everyone is always posting on facebook or twitter how they can’t seem to go to Wal-Mart without getting in a fight with the employees. That is so frustrating!!!!!

  18. chelsey says:

Ugh! I am so sorry you had a horrible day! I hate dealing with Wal-Mart. Sometimes I’ll stop off there just because it’s cheaper, but I honestly try to avoid it at all costs.

  19. Katie Smothers says:

Way to keep it together …. I would have LOST in…. not in a upset/ crying manner, in a I’m going to rip your head off.
Customer Service in general has been killing me latley. I have come across SO many people checking me out in varies store talking or texting on their cell phones. So rude.
I will tell you — the only place that I have been latley that I left thinking what great cs they had was chick fil a. I will go in there bobbling 15 things and they come help, bring your food to you, they do it all.
Sorry you had such a hard time at WM, hopefully your day got better 😉

    • Tina says:

Yes, CFA does often have good service. I don’t go often but anytime I do they are always so helpful. Usually its with our moms group bec we will do play time there and they will set up tables, highchairs, the kiddy placemats, bring our orders, EVERYTHING!

  20. Sigh. That really sucks 🙁 I hate to generalize a store, but in my experience Wal-Mart just does not have good customer service or reliable assistance. I’m sorry this happened to you though!!

It’s funny- I feel like I always have bad service at trendy restaurants. I guess the servers are just too cool for school there!!

  21. Oh you poor thing! I would have cried ..especially pregnant!

I hate going to walmart. I find it a miserable experience! I also hate Best Buy.

Actually, I hate shopping and prefer to shop online. LOL

  22. Oh girl, that sucks! I hate walmart. My dad worked for them for almost 30 years and it seriously about killed him. I haven’t been to walmart in ages. I started going to Target actually. I know it seems futile, but I would see if you can file a complaint online at the very least. If nothing else, it might make you feel better. Hugs.

  23. oh sweetie… sorry that happened. YUCK.

I do not shop at stores that have ZERO customer service. we have one here… a major department store… where my friend was registered so I “had” to shop there (NO!). I asked for this specific item, after looking through a display and not finding it… huge display of STACKED boxes of dishes, etc… she just looked at me, and walked off. WHAT?? so I set down my handbag and started DISMANTLING the entire display… looking for the one piece I wanted.

This store does NOT have ANY kind of cleanliness either, in addition to their COMPLETE LACK of customer service…

so I took my item to pay, and left everything else strewn around on the floor.

😀 made me feel better !!

  24. Natalie says:

    Stupid Wal-Mart 🙁

Poor customer service is the worst! I get so overwhelmed just by the Wal-Mart parking lot that I try to avoid it at all costs.

I hope you have a better day tomorrow!!

  25. I hate when they keep trying to pull something up on the computer and they just put in the wrong info over and over. It’s like, “why don’t I jump back there and take care of it myself?”

  26. I am so sorry about your walmart experience!! I am about to get in my car and come beat up the people that made you cry!
I absolutely hate walmart and I dread going there! I hope tomorrow is a better day!

  27. Becca says:

This is why I try to smile and be kind to my customers: I don’t want anyone crying and/or yelling at me. Although I have had people crab at me, usually for something little that has nothing to do with me personally… 🙁

My mom used to work at a Wal-Mart, though I don’t think she really dealt with customers much–she was in the office or something. That was back when I was really little, so I don’t know much about it.

I know how the crying part goes. I cry easily. When I was working in an office last summer, I had a bad phone conversation that made me cry. 🙁 I was trying not to on the phone, and finally someone else who actually knew what they were talking about came and took the call. And I cried. And one of the other ladies in the office apologized to me, ’cause the woman I was talking to was kind of a jerk to begin with. =\

    • Tina says:

I cried on the phone when pregnant with M. I cry a lot when pregnant. Pregnant or not though, sometimes it’s hard to hold it in!

  28. Ugh! I felt your pain all through that story. Except I don’t know what it’s like to be 7 months pregnant AND dealing with an impatient toddler. I just have the impatient toddler. 🙂

At least you got a cute quilt. That probably doesn’t help you feel better at this point, does it?

  29. Julianne says:

Ugh, what awful customer service. But, the bedding does look super cute!

  30. emily says:

aww, that sounds like a horrible experience! i’m so sorry! some people should definitely not work in a customer service oriented job. hope tomorrow is better!

  31. Gah! How annoying. I do not like people like that!

I avoid Walmart at all costs – really, I do! I got a Walmart giftcard from the grandparent-in-laws (they don’t know me well) for my birthday. I’m selling it to my mom – no way I’m walking into that store!

Hopefully the rest of your day got better! The bedding is really cute! 🙂

  32. Melie says:

This is completely unacceptable. Hope you never have to go through this kind of situation again.

I particularly hate the AT&T customer support. They put you on hold forever and pass your call from person to person to do the simplest thing. And they take forever. My wireless router kind of died and dread to call them, just because I know what’s going to happen… :-S

  33. The number of instances of poor customer service are to numerous to count. Unrelated to customer service, but more humanitarian service that I remember is being 8 months pregnant with the monkey, and I got a flat tire in the rain. I had to walk to the nearest gas station (luckily across the parking lot I pulled into) for a can of fix-a-flat, and then had to get down on my knees to put it in. Not a soul stopped to help me. I feel your pain.

I avoid grocery shopping of any sort, even a short list, with the monkey and his cousin in tow. It never fails to make me irritable, and want to cry. 🙁

  34. I was trying to return an item at Walmart once, and there was a little boy behind the counter crying. Apparently they get around five lost children per day. Who lets their child roam around a huge scary store like that?

Not related totally to your horrible experience, but your situation made me think of that.

I think even if they were questioning if you purchased the item they could of been polite about it at least. I wonder how many thefts Walmart has to deal with in a day?

    • Tina says:

Yea, if they had been more supportive and kind of “we just have to check for management purposes” I wouldn’t have been as bothered. Not what I got though.

  35. Wal-Mart..ew. I avoid it at all costs. So sorry for your day love 🙁

  36. ashleigh says:

I really can’t believe that happened to you! I would write them a letter. They need to better train their employees and you deserve an apology. I have bad customer service experiences all of the time and its really frustrating. Most recently a lady at target wouldn’t give me the 5 cent refunds for my reusable bags because they weren’t target bags. I tried to explain to her that I was fairly certain she was wrong because I have gone to multiple targets and always gotten refunds for my bags but she refused. It really bothered me for some reason! I thought the customer was always right?! BTW, I was right, once I walked away from her I looked it up on another cash register that it’s not just for target bags… but I didn’t feel like going back to her.

  37. Oh no! Just reading this almost made me cry. You poor thing, I hope you at least get some rest and relaxation today!

I’ve never shopped at Wal-Mart (though I have been inside a couple of times), and this solidifies my decision to shop elsewhere. I can’t believe they would treat any customer, let alone a pregnant customer with a young child, with such disrespect.

  38. Rebecca says:

Ohhhh what a horrible experience. I don’t understand why people that work in stores have to be rude sometimes, because it makes you not want to go back again.
I hate going to the Grocery Store, last time I was there, the checkout girl sent me to another register because she didn’t want to put my groceries through, She just wanted to stand chatting to her friends.

  39. OMG! I can’t believe they treated you that way. What garbage.

  40. Oh I would be so pissed! I mean really, what happened to customer service? I worked in customer service for YEARS, and I would have had my ass handed to me if I ever treated a customer that way.
I dont know whats up with people these days. I was trying to get an express freight charge removed at work awhile ago, it was a guaranteed 9am delivery and we didnt get it until 3 days after it was promised. The woman on the phone actually told me “you accepted it, so its kind of just too bad”.
    REALLY?!?!?!

  41. Yes! Bad customer service is the worst! I’m the queen of trying to get what the customer deserves. If a staff member is unacceptably rude to me (not just like having a bad day, but truly rude) I’ll go right to the manager or supervisor and usually get some sort of gift card or incentive for coming back to their business. I hate dealing with employees who clearly don’t enjoy dealing with people! If you work in retail or the service industry you should have some customer service skills! haha I should know because I work in customer service. I’m also a big fan of not going back and supporting businesses that screw me over. I guess that’s kind of hard to do with wal mart because of its great deals and convenience.

  42. Dorry says:

UGH! So sorry you dealt with this crappy experience. I’ve had some terrible customer service experiences but obviously never pregnant and with a kid in tow. I have to tell you that they Wal-Mart nearest to where I live has such awful customer service that I just avoid it at almost all cost now. Well, the bright side? Cute bedding! 🙂 Hope you get a good night’s sleep.

  43. Aww, sorry about your bad time at Walmart. I really can’t stand that store! It feels dirty and smells funky. Like popcorn and death, lol.

  44. Shannon says:

That’s the kind of thing that would have made me cry to….pregnant or not! There’s no excuse for that. Good customer service is hard to come by, so much so that I get really excited when a company/store is friendly. Good customer service equals good word of mouth, which equals better business! You’d think more companies would emphasize that with their employees. I just blogged about a company that impressed me and hopefully that causes someone to check them out.

  45. Ahhhh! So sorry! I could feel your pain and frustration. That store obviously needs a lesson in customer service. I do love the bedding though… so cute!

    • Tina says:

I know. At least M has a cute bedspread. Hopefully its not a piece of junk…but it had a lot of really good reviews. Fingers crossed. I don’t want to have to go back there for a RETURN!

  46. Katie H says:

Aw, I’m so sorry sweetie. I hate that store with a passion.

  47. Lee says:

Yet another reason why I hate Walmart.

  48. Aww, Tina, I’m so sorry about the Walmart mix-up. I was once in a similar situation and actually DID cry in the store. It didn’t make things ANY better though, so I’m glad you were able to hold it together until you got to the car.

I’m sending REAL smiles your way! Here’s to a MUCH happier Tuesday!

  49. Kristy says:

I HATE WALMART and that is why I dont shop there! No customer service! The longer lines than Disney and its dirty! Bleek, you should have spit on him!
