Sympathy For A Fellow Spaz-Head

Posted: March 3, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Now that I go to the gym in the mornings I have the opportunity to visit my favorite group fitness classes again. On Monday, I went to cycle. Then, yesterday I tried out Group Kick. When I arrived I was a little bummed that my favorite kick instructor no longer taught in that time slot. Someone new has apparently joined the teaching roster. By new, I mean very new. I felt so bad for her! She stopped so many times, not knowing what set of moves to do next. I have sympathy because I want good karma. I’m a fellow spaz-head who may want to teach group fitness in the future, after all.

Plus, I couldn’t complain because even the sporadic kicking and punching gave me more of a challenge than if I had tried to do one of my kickbox workout DVDs at home. The DVDs are great; I’m just in a rut with them. I love my Cathe and Turbo DVDS, but find that I can only really get excited for one DVD workout a week. I like the variety they give me, but much prefer the atmosphere of the gym. Although, in a few months I may very well hate gym classes and only want to do DVDs. My workout preferences are always all over the place. Spaz-head here, remember?

I find it very interesting that I always want to switch up my workouts, but I can happily eat the same foods over and over. Would you believe me if I told you I still enjoy my favorite egg sandwich combo for lunch at least 3 days out of the week?

egg sandwich

And that I still have an apple + Chobani as a snack almost every day?

chobani_apple_snack

I know you know I eat oats for breakfast all. the. time.

strawberry oats chocolate raisin oats  black and white oats  blueberry pineapple oats cranapple granola oats red white blue yoatgurt

We also do a lot of the same basic meals for dinners over the course of a month. We switch it up slightly most times, but its still basically the same dish. Take dinner last night for example. Pasta night. I cooked up some of my favorite veggie mix of zucchini, mushrooms, and onion. Plus wilted some spinach in some basic marinara sauce.

 pasta 3 pasta 4

Then we Trader Joe’d it for the rest of dinner. Trader Joe’s sun-dried tomato chicken sausage and Trader Joe’s chunky portabella mushroom ravioli.

 pasta 1 pasta 2

All served together with the marinara and veggie mix.

 pasta 6

It’s no wonder I can happily eat the same things over and over. They’re good! If my tummy is happy that is all that matters to me. 😀

Question of the Day – How much variety do you need with your workouts? And food? One more than the other?

  1. I love having some things on hand for quick dinners like that! I either have oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast almost every day, and I don’t get sick of it at all! But, I have to change up my dinners or else I get bored.

  2. Lauren says:

I hope that the instructor gets better with time! I need a lot of variety – I run and weight train a few times a week, and go to a spinning & power yoga as well. I LOVE the variety.

  3. I’m pretty much fine with sticking to the same thing over…and over…and over…again. My law school diet was applesauce, coffee, and my version of fried rice (yeah, healthy). And I’ll hit the treadmill until my knees give out (literally). Such a bore.

  4. I love switching up workouts! That’s the problem with the DVD’s… I love doing them, but I find it really hard to stick to the program that comes with them. Luckily at the gym I go to now, it’s basically a different workout every day. But I would LOVE to go to a fun group dance class every once in a while. They need a Dance Trance near me!

  5. I have been loving my DVDs lately, but now I am getting sick of them and would rather be at the gym or outside. My food is pretty boring, but living on campus does that to ya!

  6. I TOTALLY agree with you. I get tired of my workouts but, I can eat the same things weeks after weeks and not get tired of them!

I like to change up my workouts ever few weeks. Sometimes trying a new class at my gym helps me out!

  7. I’m not much of a variety person. I like finding a routine and sticking to it. Every so often though with food I need to change it up. (I know I should with exercise so this year I’m forcing myself out of my comfort zone and into group classes. :D)

  8. I need so much variety in my workouts! I simply cannot stand to do the same thing. One day I run, then the next day I’m already bored with it and ready for the next thing. My blog readers probably think I’m a spaz too 🙂

  9. I am a complete spazhead too when it comes to my workouts…I can be completely content with a workout dvd for awhile but then need something else to spice it up a bit…right now that is what the running is doing for me “spicing things up a bit”. I am the same way with food though, I need change and a variety. But I definitely could eat mexican every.single.day. ha!

  10. Once I find something I like, I stick with it!!! Especially with foods!

  11. I’m the same way – I can eat the same thing day in and day out, but I can’t do the same workout two days in a row! Adding a variety of workouts to my routine has definitely helped stop me from getting “bored” and kept me on track.

(and I sometimes secretly contemplate becoming a spin instructor!)

  12. Kristi says:

I try to mix up my workouts as much as I can. I’ve been starting to workout at home more, and need to make sure that I dont’ get bored with my dvd workouts.

  13. I am the same way. I could eat the same foods day in and day out but when it comes to my workouts it needs VARIETY or I get BORED!

  14. sami says:

i actually don’t switch things up nearly enough. i tend to do the same workouts and eat the same things. i figure if its not broke, why fix it?! haha.

    xo.

  15. I like to mix it up all the time…especially my workouts. I lose my motivation really quickly if I don’t.

With food, we have our staple meals during the week when time is tight and we don’t want to waste all night in the kitchen, but I love experimenting a few nights a week with new recipes. My husband on the other hand would eat a steak and baked potato for every meal and be quite content!

  16. Usually if I find something I like I stick with it…whether its food or exercise! And I’m definitely wanting some of the food you made 🙂

  17. Angela says:

I’m the same way – I’ll happily eat the same (or very slight variations of) breakfast each day, but my workouts need a little more excitement! I usually switch them up each month. Each week, I teach spin 2-3x, cross train 1-2x, and run 2-3 times. I used to be able to run day after day, but I get bored much faster now! 🙂

  18. Heather says:

I was just having this discussion with my husband last night! I feel like I need to switch up my workouts b/c I’m getting bored (it’s hard when you teach!). We’ll see what happens….
But I’m the same as you with food – I eat the same breakfast almost every day!

  19. i hear those ravioli!

girrrrllll!!!! look at your bloggy makeover! I love it! =) How stoked are you!? =)

    • Tina says:

Love the new look too. Although if only my server would stop being stupid with it and not uploading things properly sometimes.

  20. Heather says:

I am a picky eater so I eat a lot of the same foods over and over.
With workkouts, i un most of the time with elliptical and dvd’s one or two times a week, and getting better with strength training!

  21. Kristen says:

I feel the same way! I am always in a rut when it comes to weight training – I feel like I need my own personal trainer to keep me entertained. (Would just like to mention I’m using some of your ideas for making strength training plans… push/pull/full. Love it so far!) I am getting better about changing up my meals, but that’s a whole different reason!

  22. I’m the same way, I could eat the same variation of foods, but my workouts have to change up daily! That egg sandwich looks so good! The tomato is a great compliment!

  23. I’m queen of easy dinners. I love egg wraps or stir fried veggies with pasta sauce over rice or pasta. It’s comforting to have go to meals when I don’t have time for something different.

    • Tina says:

I think I eat eggs for lunch and dinner way more than for breakfasts. Love eggs! Although my husband doesn’t love how much I eat them. They cause some nastiness from me. 😀

      TMI? Oops!

  24. I get bored with workouts easily so I need variety. When I’m running, just changing up my routes will do the trick.

I tend to get sick of foods at the end of the season. Right now I’m sick of winter vegetables and ready for the crop of fresh spring veggies already!! Any day now, right?

  25. Kacy says:

I get kind of nervous about trying new workouts so I kind of stick to the same things. I need to switch it up more!

  26. I need a bit of variety in both. Not a whole lot, but some. Unfortunately, my meals aren’t as varied as I would like since I live with other people who have definite taste preferences. 😛

  27. Allie says:

I love eating the same foods over and over haha!

  28. Danica says:

I have to switch up my workouts too! I get bored quickly with doing the same thing a couple times a week-DVDs/p90x, walking, running, elliptical, fitness classes, etc. I have to mix it up! I also have to mix it up with food-though I tend to have the same type of snacks often, I could never eat the same thing day after day or week after week

  29. jobo says:

I too crave variety in my workouts!! And I FEEL for the Group Kick instructor! Since I was one (and wish I still was!!), it is really hard to remember it all, keep your cool and uh, look cool too. I miss group classes when I travel so much!! But like you, I can happily eat the same things, but not so much on the workouts. I love variety too!!

  30. Cynthia says:

I know my muscles crave variety in my workouts, but sometimes it takes me too long to realize I have to change it up. I could do the same workout all the time. With food, I can definitely eat the same thing over and over. I eat eggs and bacon all the time for breakfast and it never gets old. My husband and I also eat the same dinners a lot of the time. When something works, it works. 🙂

  31. i think i need more variety in my food than in my workouts. i like to change up my meals and snacks often (except breakfast!), but i’m good doing similar workouts over and over again! i have to force myself to switch it up and get variety in my exercise!

  32. Instead of variety in workouts, I crave a training plan (like couch to 5k), otherwise I just prefer ‘fun’ exercise like hiking and biking 🙂

  33. Susan says:

I definitely need my food to be more diverse than my exercise routine. I think if I had two or three activities to do a week (walking, DVD, weight training, Yoga), then I’ll be happy.

  34. Sarah R says:

I could eat the same thing for breakfast and dinner day after day (in fact I have been recently), but dinner is usually something different. When I have the energy I like to try out new recipes. As far as exercise? Hello rut!

  35. Your pasta and sausage is making me drool a little bit over here! 🙂

  36. Naomi says:

yum! your oat bowls look so delicious!!! I eat the same exact thing for breakfast every morning. it is my favorite meal and I look forward to it EVERY morning! I am trying to vary up my other food and so ironic that I just posted about this topic today too!

I have a greek yog and cottage cheese almost everyday…will I ever get sick of that! 🙂

  37. I like a lot of variety in both food AND workouts! I hardly ever eat the same thing two days in a row unless it’s leftovers, and even then I have to add new things to make it seem new, lol. Yeah, I like variety. Keeps life interesting!

  38. Lee says:

I could probably eat the exact same thing every day and be happy about it!

  39. I love your meal idea! I like making good, simple meals that are quick! My son isn’t an adventurous eater so spending too much time cooking only to be greeted at the table with a bunch of whining is not my idea of a meal. So I’m adding your meal idea to my book!

I don’t like a lot of workout variety. I run, that’s pretty much it. I want to add some strength training, but I hate it so much.

  40. […] get my day up and running on a positive note. I did a group kickboxing class for my workout today. Remember a couple weeks ago when I went and the instructor had a lot of difficulty leading the class? Well, she had her A game on today and gave us a great workout. I was so happy for her! I can only […]
