End It On A High Note

Posted: July 18, 2011 at 8:00 am

Catching up from the weekend? Check out a few things you may have missed:

Every Saturday night, Peter and I have a “date night” where we try to decompress from life’s daily pressures and spend more time together than the standard night. Most of these “date nights” consist of dinner and a movie at home to keep our budget in check…and not to abuse our free babysitting benefits from the grandparents. Besides, it feels more special having one night a month to head out together for a special night just the two of us. We had our night out for July this Saturday and what a good one it was.

We actually started our date on the earlier side. Why? Well, to fit in enough time for this special occasion…

IMGP0048

Yes, we were die-hard enough to go opening weekend. And to see it in 3D!

IMGP0045

Attractive (and blurry), no? I doubted that the 3D would make a better viewing experience, but Peter insisted after seeing Transformers in 3D with some friends from work a couple weeks ago. And it really was neat! I definitely think it added to the already super-amazing-so-sad-it’s-over-want-to-watch-again movie. They really worked to end the series on a high note and the movie could not have been better. And…now I can’t wait for part one of Breaking Dawn. I’m secretly fifteen.

Once we finished our afternoon at the movies, we headed to dinner.

 IMGP0049

My beautiful Cheeky, we meet again! I couldn’t remember the last time we dined here - only one of my favorite restaurants - and knew we needed to pay it a visit.

IMGP0050

We started with the required chips and salsa…

IMGP0051

…which still lived up to my expectations. I love their salsa because it has a decent kick and is the perfect consistency – not chunky salsa but not watery either. I could have dunked the whole basket of chips in that delicious tomato flavah!

IMGP0054

But I had to save room for my adored tacos – two fish tacos with poblano slaw and chipotle cream and one crab cake taco with poblano slaw and pineapple salsa.

at cheeky cheeky trio

Despite my happy looking face the meal ended up an Utter. Disappointment. 🙁

I don’t know what happened, but the tacos did not taste near as good as usual. They didn’t necessarily taste bad, but just not like they were freshly made and with as much quality. Part of why I always loved Cheeky was for their reasonable portions, fresh tasting food, and flavorful combinations. I didn’t get that vibe last night. I hope they had an off night and aren’t going downhill. I may just have to try that new taco place my friends love.

Even after a decent amount of food at dinner, I still felt really really hungry. If I don’t get the satisfaction I seek in taste, it’s almost like I never ate. I need food that satisfies my taste buds in order to feel satiated physically. So what does a girl do to satisfy those taste buds fully?

IMGP0067

I think you know what that is! Self-serve fro-yo!!! We found a coupon for a new frozen yogurt stop, so of course we had to include it in our date night. I quickly fell in love with this location. Because a) they have birthday cake flavor and b) they have cookie dough topping. A match  made in heaven…

IMGP0072

You know…along with espresso flavor frozen yogurt and brownie bits, toffee, and butterscotch chips for additional toppings. You think I went a little topping crazy?

 IMGP0071

And do you think I care??? Thanks, Peter for the action shot. Imagine it in 3D. You would think I’m about to eat your face off. Obviously, the night ended on a high note. Do I look happy or do I look happy? ;)

  • Ever seen a full-length movie in 3D? Did you like it?
  • Can you relate to my need for food to taste good in order to feel satiated?

  1. Good to hear the 3D version was good this time! I saw the Half-Blood Prince in 3D and there were only 3D effects for the first 5 minutes or so!

Fro Yo is a great end to any date night. 🙂

  2. the last movie we saw in 3-D was an animated movie i can’t even remember the name of! if i can drag nate to harry potter with me i’m DEFINITELY going to do the 3-D thing though, i’ve heard so many good things about it. and i totally know what you mean about the food thing…if i’m expecting great flavor and freshness and don’t get it i’ll want to seek it out elsewhere!

  3. Sarah says:

I can definitely relate to the need for food to taste good in order to be satisfying- I’m the same way!

  4. Hannah says:

Okay, I’m totally willing to forgive you for putting Harry Potter and Twilight in the same category, because that froyo looks delicious and I want it 😉

  5. I saw Up in 3D with my husband when we were dating. We both had a little too much fun with the glasses. 🙂
I’m the same as you when it comes to dinner, if it doesn’t satisfy my taste buds, I often don’t feel full. That’s usually because I can’t bring myself to eat much of it. At least there was fro-yo to make up for it!

  6. Mandy says:

Your yogurt bowl looks strikingly similar to mine from yesterday too! LOL!! We also went to a self serve place and I filled mine with low fat cake batter yogurt..topped it with brownie bites, butterscotch chips and a few andies mints. LOL 🙂 baby 2.0 and I approve! :):)

  7. How did you get out of seeing Transformers? I just read this and told my husband “see! her husband went with his friends, how about you do the same.” He’s been trying to get me to go for 3 weeks now. I just have no desire to see it.

    On another note-I want that fro-yo 🙂

    • Tina says:

It was a group from work that planned it and I was like “Sure go with THEM!!” Otherwise I know I would end up watching it with him some weekend down the road. Ick.

  8. I too can’t wait for Breaking Dawn, l too am secretly fifteen. Have you read the Hunger Games series? They’re being made into movies & just as good as HP & Twilight. You should check them out 🙂

  9. jobo says:

OMG. I could use some ice cream right now! That looks soooo good even at 8:30 in the morning 😉

  10. Yes, when a meal I was looking forward to ends up being a disappointment, I feel cheated and need to make up for it with something yummy. Calories don’t count if they don’t taste good 😉

  11. I’m also “15” and in love with Twilight and can’t wait for Breaking Dawn in November! I’m glad it’s not in 3D though… could be gross!

  12. K-I-L-L-I-N-G me. I desperately want to see Harry Potter and no clue when I’ll be able to pull it off. Looks like fun!

  13. Too bad about the tacos!

We saw Avatar in 3D and it was pretty cool. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to seeing HP, I haven’t seen any of them.

Oh and I’m 15 too, I can’t wait for Breaking Dawn!

  14. I feel the same about needing to be satisfied. I hate when my favorites go downhill and have been know to eat a second inner to “make up” for the disappointment. Maybe I should start going to yogurt instead!

  15. The only movie I’ve seen in 3D was Avatar. And it was amazing! I love your date nights because they are really about you two and what y’all love and not necessarily about going out and spending tons of money on things you don’t care about…love it!

  16. Haley Q says:

AGREED, I have to enjoy my food to the absolute fullest otherwise I won’t feel satiated and I’ll end up eating more than if I had just stuck with that one thing I knew I would enjoy!
Wasn’t Harry Potter the best? I usually hate 3D movies but this one was incredible in 3D and left me with no headache.

  17. Jess says:

OMG I LOVE the action shot – the glee on your face is quite clear. I’m glad you at least got to enjoy a delicious ice cream especially given your dinner was less than awesome. I HATE when that happens. Such a downer!

  18. I loved the movie too! I’m a cheapskate though so I don’t often go to movies in 3D. I almost got to go to HP in 3D without having to pay but it didn’t work out. 🙁
I’ve gone twice though and know I’ll be going many more times in the next few weeks.
I’m totally 15 too and am definite looking forward to Breaking Dawn. 🙂

  19. Julie says:

It seems like all the kid movies these days are in 3D. I’ve started picking and choosing because it is more expensive, but the kids always want it in 3D (of course!).
The best movie I saw in 3D was Avatar!

  20. Butterscotch chips..mmm

That green tank looks fabulous on you — really great color for your skin tone!

  21. What a fun date night!!
Cake flavor frozen yogurt sound deliiiicious:)

  22. Kara says:

I’m also really excited for Breaking Dawn 🙂 It give my husband plenty of enjoyment to make fun of me for watching it, so it’s a win-win situation 🙂

  23. Glad you liked HP! I did too. And I thought the 3d was done really well, not distracting at all!

  24. The Menchie’s by our house added Red Velvet flavored fro-yo and I’m telling you…I found my mother ship. It is UN-REAL.
(Also, I go about 40/60 on yogurt to toppings ratio. Mmm).

  25. chelsea says:

Practically all movies in theatres right now are on a 3D kick. I like them but not for the price. We saw harry potter as well opening weekend and our theatre was emptyyy! I think everyone thought it would be packed so they avoided it. Ha silly silly people!

I saw the Breaking Dawn trailer pre-HP though and flipped out. I’m so psyched.

  26. any day that ends in froyo is a good day! glad you enjoyed your date night, you deserve it!

  27. Whitney says:

Well hello! I had some fro-yo yesterday too!! loved it!! Breaking Dawn is going to be awesome!!! Harry Potter and I have never met. I may watch them one day. Hope you have a fabulous week!

  28. I just wrote a post about the me and the hubby’s date day. I’m just realizing ohow important it is to have them! I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 3-D. It was interesting!

  29. That is a great way to end the day, I had frozen yogurt three times this weekend, one on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it was glorious 🙂
Glad you had a wonderful date night too, you deserve special time like that Tina!

  30. Avery says:

I saw the new Harry Potter in 3d too! I was skeptical at first and only went because my boyfriend insisted. But I was pleasantly surprised and it ended up being really good! Sometimes 3d movies are totally worth it!

  31. You know I’m always with you on the subject of food! I feel like restaurants get comfortable and then they either change stuff to lower costs or they change management that then changes things to lower cost. I hate loving a place and then getting let down. That’s what happened to Rio Bravo for us.

Sounds like the perfect ending to date night!

  32. Can’t wait to see Harry Potter – going tomorrow!! So excited!!!

  33. Cindy says:

I never realized it until now, but you must live near me!!! Cheeky is (I think) local to my area! And OMGosh, I hope they’re not losing “it” because it’s my favorite restaurant for all the reasons you listed… The freshness, the quality ingredients, etc.

We just went to see HP this weekend, and loved it too. I can’t believe it’s over.

    • Tina says:

Yep. We must be close!!! 🙂 How cool.

We have a blogger meetup scheduled for later this month and I keep learning of other bloggesr in the area. Email me if you’re interested in the details and a chance to get together!

  34. I saw the regular HP and really want to go see it again in 3D. If anything for the experiece.

LOL about the last picture being in 3D. Glad it ended on a high note!

  35. Errign says:

I’ve seen movies in 3D and was never wowed. Plus, I felt super weird wearing the glasses so I was distracted. It does seem like HPin 3D would be good though!

Looove self serve fro yo, but here in Asheville it’s SO expensive. It’s like 45 cents an ounce, which seems crazy.

    • Tina says:

Ours is 39 cents or something like that. It is expensive which is why we only go with coupons or for a special splurge. I wish I could eat it more often though!

  36. Oh my those tacos look A.Maz.Ing!!! Yum 😛

  37. Lisa says:

Your froyo always looks so good!!!!

I haven’t seen Harry Potter, I just cant get into it! I read like one page of one book! Haha.

  38. Helen says:

I’ve never seen a movie in 3D but I would love to! Oh and I totally relate to the whole teen movie addiction, I am anxiously waiting for Breaking Dawn. I believe that no matter how old we get, we will always love the pureness, innocence, and romance of a teen love 🙂

  39. Rebecca says:

I went to Spy Kids 3 in 3D a long time ago (ended up taking the glasses off for most of it), and the final Shrek movie last summer in 3D.
I don’t really like 3D much. EVERYONE is doing 3D. I think last year was a record for 3D movies or something. Ugh.
The glasses we get are cool, but they don’t fit over my glasses and they slide off pretty easily. 🙁
So no, not a huge fan of 3D. I like the movies, but not the 3D aspect.

I haven’t gone to HP yet. I’ve only seen one in theaters, and that was DH part one. Went to it before I’d seen the previous one. Oops. 😛 And I’ve only read the first two books…

  40. I was a little iffy about seeing Harry Potter in 3D (the glasses get on my nerves), but it gave each scene great depth! And it covered up the tears streaming from my eyes throughout the entire movie. Bonus! 🙂

  41. Priyanka says:

I watched HP in 3D and really loved it. I think it was worth watching in 3D. I am so sad the movie series is over 🙁

  42. Carrie says:

My hubby & I actually had the same experience at Cheeky, too! We ate there for the first time over a year ago and it was AWESOME, but it just wasn’t the same when we went back a few months ago – I agree about the not-so-fresh flavors. Not sure what’s going on there, but it makes me sad 🙁

But I wholly endorse Cinco! (excellent fish tacos there as well, and their salsa is amazing – <3 the fire roasted tomatoes!)

(To avoid sounding creepy, I feel I should also add that I found your blog comepletely by chance – linked from another blog I read – and it took me months before I even realized we live in the same state…and only just now have I realized we most likely live in the same area, as well. Small world!)

    • Tina says:

Not creepy at all! I have quite a few people in this area who read and happened on the blog by chance. Let me know if you’re interested in a blogger meet up later this month!

And I now must try Cinco bec it sounds like we have similar tastes!

  43. Your fro yo cup is TOTALLY my style. I LOVE adding cookie dough chunks to cake batter fro yo. It’s heavenly! 🙂

  44. I’m hoping to see Harry Potter next weekend. I’m excited to see it, but also a big sad that once I see it, I can’t anticipate it anymore. Is that odd? 🙂

I’m not a fan of 3D generally. My kids really don’t like it, so I appreciate when kids movies come out in good old fashioned 2D.

  45. I’m DYING to see HP7! I have big plans to see it this week!

Your fro yo is totally what I do too… and it’s one of my favorite desserts! Cake Batta is my faaavorite!

  46. Justin Bieber’s movie was the last one I saw in 3D.. it was totally fun feeling almost like I was seeing him live in concert 😉

  47. Sarah R says:

I totally know how you feel about eating good food in order to feel satisfied. I’m the same way. Glad there was yogurt to save the day!

  48. Heidi says:

I had seen on one morning show that they actually made 3D glasses that looked like Harry’s. I’m bummed you didn’t get to wear those!
We saw Avatar in 3D and I should have known better.. I always get headaches in Imax & 3D movies. We saw it again for the regular version, and I actually thought the colors were more vivid.
Sorry about the bad taco experience. It just gives you a good excuse now to go try out a few new restaurants in search of the perfect seafood tacos!

  49. Theres honestly NO better way to end a night than with fro – yo 🙂 I’m a topping queen as well!

  50. I totally can relate to you on needing my food taste amazing in order to feel physically satiated. I think that’s why I’m such a “creature of habit” and will eat the same thing everyday because I know it’ll satisfy my taste buds, thus satisfying me physically 🙂

Btw, that fro yo looks absolutely amazing…self serve fro yo shops are the best invention ever!! 😉

    • Tina says:

Interesting point! I wonder if that is why I also eat the same things over and over again. I want to know I’ll be satisfied.
