Right Back On The Wagon {Giveaway}

Posted: November 8, 2011 at 8:06 am

After a weekend full of celebrating (!!!) hearty food, lots of beer, ice cream, and pumpkin pie fudge, I felt ready to get back to my more normal way of eating today. I loaded up on many of my standard healthy eating favorites yesterday.

Picasa2_thumb[2]

Oats for breakfast, Love Grown granola and Larabars for snacks, egg sandwich for lunch, and quinoa for dinner. Delicious!

I also felt really antsy to get in a workout. My legs were no longer sore, but I knew I needed to hold off on a run, so spin class it was!

I planned to take it really easy, but I should have known that my favorite instructor would pull more out of me. I actually credit her a lot with increasing my cardiovascular and my leg endurance during her tough workouts. She never fails to take me past my comfort zone. I truly think spin class helps my running. And I’m not just sucking up because she reads the blog either. Winking smile Hi, Sophie!!!

As always, it felt so great to get right back to the normal go of things. I keep way more motivation that way and I know it’s all part of maintaining my healthy habits. Which I am all about, especially during this time of the year with the numerous events and celebrations that happen.

Last week, I had the chance to sit in on a video chat with Bahar Takhtehchian, the senior associate health editor for SHAPE magazine.

Bahar shared lots of tips on remaining healthy during the holidays, including some of my favorites:

  • When you know you will have a heavier dinner out, make sure to choose healthier options during the day.
  • Focus on satiating foods that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats – such as some almonds and an apple – for snacks before big meals out, so the chance of overeating decreases.
  • Get in whatever activity you can, because even 20 minutes can go a long way!
  • Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
  • Remember positive mantras like “Do I want a moment on the lips, or to take care of my body for a lifetime?” <—or something like that Winking smile

I really enjoyed the chat. It covered many ideas I already knew, but it never hurts to reinforce good habits and gain that extra bit of motivation before such a busy and food laden time of year.

In fact, SHAPE magazine and Fiber One (the sponsor of the chat) have teamed up to help YOU as well. One lucky winner will receive:

  • a one year subscription to SHAPE magazine
  • a yoga mat
  • a stability ball
  • a water bottle
  • a pedometer
  • Fiber One brownies

    Re-tweeted it! @goofyfrito

  2. Robyn says:

One of my favorite snacks is yogurt with almonds!

  3. My favorite on-the-go snack lately is unsalted cashews, raisins, and no sugar added dried apricots. Yummy! And you’ve got fat, protein, and carbs 🙂

    Fun giveaway!

  4. During the holidays I especially make it a point to work out first thing in the morning. During the day there is so much to do and there is no way to get me to the gym after a relaxing dinner with family, friends and wine. As far as food goes, I try to pace myself and wait a good amount of time before going back for seconds to see if I’m really still hungry and want it.

  5. Sarah says:

I love pre cut carrots as a quick and easy on the go snack!!

  6. LaRae says:

The easiest way for me to stay healthy during the holidays is by:
1-drink PLENTY of water before my gargantuan family meals (i’ll think i’m full earlier than if i drank normal.)
2-load up of vegetables, and eat those off my plate first!
3-choose between either dessert OR bread(s).
4-if my plate ends up being bigger than expected, i purposely leave one big bite’s worth of each on my plate!

it takes a lot of will power, but it definitely can be done without any guilt 🙂

  7. Kelly says:

I usually pass up the things I can get all year round like rolls and sweet potatoes and then I feel more balanced when I eat the stuffing and the pecan pie.

  8. LaRae says:

I tweeted about the giveaway 🙂

  9. During the holidays I try to continue working out and even up it a little if I can, that way although I am likely indulging a bit more I still feel good about myself because I know I am breaking a sweat!

  10. Ally says:

I try to stay as active as I can during the holidays. My workouts have to stay a priority or else it will be harder once the new year starts!

  11. Stephanie says:

Fruit plates! If I have lots of fancy fruit, then I’m a very happy reveler.

  12. Angie says:

I carry baby carrots with me wherever I go. It really helps to know I have a snack with me to fight any temptations that may come my way.

  13. Diana says:

I stay (relatively) healthy during the holidays by setting out some guidelines for myself from which I won’t falter – for example I’ll allow myself to dive into a piece of pumpkin pie, but I’ll limit myself to one dessert item & won’t eat hors d’oeurves before Thanksgiving dinner (because…seriously?!?) or things like chocolate candy that I can get year round and frankly aren’t worth it. Knowing ahead of time that I can indulge in some things, but not others, helps me stay on track.

  14. Haley says:

My favorite go-to snack is 1-oz. of mixed nuts that I place into snack-size zip-top baggies…fiber, good fats, and more! It’s satiating, and I know it’ll hold me in between meals when I’m shopping like a crazy woman for holiday gifts =).

  15. Karolina says:

I stay healthy by setting healthy boundaries with family members and making sure I get some quiet self-care time!

  16. Karla says:

Great post! I loved the tips you shared! I stay healthy during the holidays by…
    1. Focusing on what really matters in my life…God and that helps me manage stress, not look at all of the yummy foods as the means to holiday enjoyment, take care of myself and others, etc.
    2. Finding fun festive ways to stay active like walk around the mall looking at holiday sales, going ice skating, building a snowman, etc.
    3. Enjoy the “this time of the year” treats (like pumpkin flavored treats, limited edition holiday snacks) and skipping the everyday treats….I can enjoy those all the other times during the year.

  17. I have never really thought about staying healthy over the holidays (in an actually healthy way) before this year. However, this year, like you, I have become a new lover of running and racing, so I planned my second ever half marathon right before Thanksgiving. That way leading up to the holiday I will be following a training plan and staying in shape! I also plan to tackle a couple more 5Ks before the year is up!

  18. Heidi Nicole says:

My favorite “road trip” snack… skittles, the purple bag. Or Mike n Ike, the blue box.

    {hey, you didn’t say *healthy* snacks! ;)}

  19. Heidi Nicole says:

    I tweeted!

    @runaroundaroo

  20. Karolina says:

    I tweeted about the giveaway!

  21. Jordan K. says:

I try to remind myself during the holidays, that just because there are more parties/events going on, it doesn’t mean that I can take a “free pass” to exercising or over eating! I definitely allow myself a splurge (or two!) but I try to stick with my normal healthy lifestyle as much as possible too.

My favorite healthy snacks are usually an apple and some nuts or a larabar! Always easy to pack on the go!

  22. Carolyn says:

My simple healthy fixes for the holiday are to continue to workout as usual, drink lots of water, and continue to eat healthy foods at home. That way when I go to parties or celebrations and indulge I dont feel too guilty:).

  23. Claire says:

The holidays usually mean bringing my own food to parties to stay healthy and help the host… but if all else fails having some pumpkin seeds in my purse can be a lifesaver! & keeping up the exercise is key, if you get out of the habit the weight will creep on.

  24. Marty says:

During the holidays I coordinate runs with my sister as much as possible. We plan fun Thanksgiving day runs by the water. We take resistance bands and mat and do a few circuits in the nearby park after our run. Burn calories and have great company!

  25. Megan says:

My favorite on-the-go snack is an apple with some almonds. The pumpkin spice almonds are amazing right now 😀

  26. Marty says:

    I tweeted about your giveaway!

  27. carly says:

during the holidays i just make sure to eat healthy all of the other days surrounding the holiday so that i can enjoy my holiday without guilt. i also like to keep up with my workouts – especially ON the holiday! even if it is just a long walk with the dogs, it makes me feel better for the rest of the day.

  28. Lauren says:

Favorite snack on the go is larabars!

  29. I love KIND bars for on the go snacks. I try to get in my workot whenever I can. I motivate myself to get on the treadmill to watch fun holiday movies. I won’t let myself watch them from the couch! 🙂

  30. peacebeme says:

It’s okay if I’m not entered into the contest for this comment, but I have to say that I think SHAPE magazine is SO hypocritical!

  31. Caroline says:

I stay healthy during the Thanksgiving & Christmas seasons by choosing to go work out with my family pretty much every day. We make it fun while we get healthy! We also balance our snacking with lots of healthy and delicious foods!

  32. What an awesome giveaway! During the holiday season I let myself indulge in my favorite treats so I make sure to start my mornings off with a nice sweat session! 🙂

  33. Afterglow says:

My favorite on-the-go snack are Luna bars!

  34. Afterglow says:

    I tweeted!

  35. Holly says:

My favorite snack by far is an apple and a 100-cal pack of almonds. Perfect combo.

  36. Katie says:

To stay healthy during the holidays I try to keep my workouts up!

  37. Michelle says:

I’m trying something new to stay healthy during the holidays this year. Last year I overdid it and gained a few pounds. After that, I tried using the LoseIt! app on my iphone and it REALLY helped keep me on track. I used it for a few months until I felt comfortable that I was really eating what I needed, then stopped. I just picked it back up again for the holidays. I can still eat what I want and splurge a little, but it helps me make sure not to stuff myself silly 🙂

  38. Hilary says:

I hear ya! Indulging is fun, but it feels food to get back to normal after the fact. My fav on the go snack would probably be an apple (boring, I know), but I’m also a big fan of chocolate Vitatops (oh, and also, I LOVE fiber one brownies).

  39. go-to snacks= apple & chobani yogurt & almonds! perfect!

  40. Keren says:

I like to keep active during the holidays. I try and exercise normally as time permits or squeeze in a walk with the family. Also, I LOVE sweets so I try and trick myself by eating lots of fruit. It is sweet but not so fatty.

  41. Denise says:

My go to snack is either a boiled egg or carrot sticks. Yummy.

  42. Denise says:

I am going to shar eon facebook.

  43. Errign says:

My favorite on the go snack is apple slices and carrot sticks 🙂

  44. My favorite go to snack at work is a fresh apple. Since I work in a school, and there are a lot of severe nut allergies, I have had to get creative with my snacks. I have found that an apple or a sweet potato is an easy snack to carry and for the sweet potato all I need is a microwave and I am good to go 🙂

  45. congrats on the race Tina!! you are amazing!

  46. Mac says:

Ahhh! I love, love, love this giveaway! My method for staying healthy during the holidays is walking a mile a day, outside of my normal workouts. That extra mile a day gets me fresh air (usually done outside), relaxes me because it’s low-intensity and I’m used to high-intensity and burns some extra calories 🙂
