healthy living blogger

Posted: August 14, 2010 at 11:11 pm

I’ve had quite a few things come to my attention that could easily define me as a healthy living blogger. It never ceases to amaze me how blogging has become such a key component of my life in the past 7 months. I love the community and the fulfillment it brings me. Who cares if it leads to a few quirks along the way?

Five Quirks that tell me I’m a Healthy Living Blogger

1 - My birthday wish list. I will be celebrating another year of life gone by a week from tomorrow (Aug 23). The other day Peter asked what I would like for my birthday. I told him nothing since not too long ago I received the mother of all material presents – my dSLR camera. Nevertheless, images of sugarplums fitness/blogging gear began running through my head.

A macro lens for the camera, Insanity DVDs, TurboFire DVDs, or a Garmin. You can call me crazy because 75% of my wish list revolves around items I can’t even use for around another 6 months.  I know I’m insane. After all, I know my birthday wish list item for next year even. A trip to the Healthy Living Summit 2011. If they have another one? I can be hopeful.

2 – Having a green monster…followed by birthday cake. I live my life by the belief everything works in moderation. Which is why I don’t have to feel guilty for eating a decent slice of birthday cake at a friend’s child’s 1st birthday party yesterday.

The Green Monster I had post Power class balances it out perfectly you know. Nutritious + indulgent. There’s always room for both in a healthy life.

3 – I no longer feel odd taking pictures of my food. I’m not shy to bust out the big camera out in public restaurants. Who cares if the waiter gives me a confused look when he comes up to the table and I am playing America’s Next Top Model with my food. I need to get quality shots of my dinner. This girl has priorities!

4 - “I should blog about that” is a recurring thought in my head. I don’t think a day goes by where something catches my interest and my immediate thought process doesn’t include the blog. Open your eyes and you can find blogging material anywhere. It helps me to see things in a new light as well. I don’t really plan much out. God just gives it to me somehow. He knows I wouldn’t be creative enough on my own. 😉 We’ll call the below my “thinking face”. No, I don’t know what I was actually doing here.

5 – I don’t mind getting up early to check comments and visit blogs. I have grown so close to so many in the community that waking up 1.5 – 2 hours before M to get writing, email catch up, and blog reading done doesn’t phase me. I want time with my darling one during the day, but know I couldn’t give up my precious blogging time either. I think she appreciates it. Blogging did lead me to Green Monsters and she is very appreciative of those.

She’s also appreciative of the review I get to do. Like the most recent one for Sesame Street e-books.

Over the past month, we have had complimentary access to the Sesame Street E-Books page. The site provides interactive learning to children, revolving around the Sesame Street characters. You can pick books on various topics – colors, foods (!!!), shapes, life moments, and more. Some of the books even have a recorded voice for kids to follow along to or coloring pages available for printing. I found Makenzie really enjoyed the site because, as much as I try to limit it, she does like watching TV. She showed interest in the e-books from seeing things on a screen, but I felt comfortable because they provided valuable learning. I really believe it helped her with her colors too! Overall, I would highly recommend this site to mothers. For a free trial e-book click the widget on my sidebar. Thanks, Swetha for giving us this opportunity!

  1. Ha! All but #2 would be on my list. And especially #1. I want to go to the 2011 HLS!!!
What is a green monster? I have seen them elsewhere too and now I know I need to try it!

    • Tina says:

Green monsters are delicious! And a great way to sneak in an extra serving of veggies. I always make mine the most simple way since I share with the little one.

Simply a cup of milk (I love using vanilla almond milk), a banana chopped into chunks, and a large handful or two of fresh baby spinach. Blend, blend, blend until smooth and you won’t be able to taste the spinach at all. Even though its green.

  2. LOL – too funny. I am most definitely a healthy blogger. I am constantly thinking of things I want to mention. I am now considering signing up for photography classes even, just for the blog mind you. Oh, and more workouts – heck yeah! For my birthday, I would LOVE to get either Insanity or Turbo Fire. I already pre-ordered Cathe’s upcoming workouts, but that clearly isn’t enough for me 😉

    • Tina says:

HOLD UP! Cathe has new workouts available for pre-order? HOW did I miss this?

And I planned on doing a photography course this weekend, but couldn’t get in since I found it so late. The next one for the class I want isn’t until February!

      • Yes ma’am – 4! Super excited. If you go through my link, I um get a small percentage too. Pre-order is through the end of the month. I think you’ll be excited to read about them. 1 is a full body STS, another is like a HIIT and Imax blend. Good times!

  3. Cute post as always Tina and you are absolutely 100% right about all of them. I just started blogging 3 months ago and I’ve already been suckered into all of these! I actually feel that blogging has made me a better, happier person. Bad day at work – my blog friends (blends) will understand and lift me up). I will refrain from a tangent 🙂

My blogger wish list includes a macro lens as well. We are thinking of buying one for ourselves this Christmas. And yes, I’m definitely with you for the Healthy Living Summit!

  4. My birthday is just a month after yours (Sept. 22nd), and I have the Garmin on my list, too. I actually mentioned that I might ask for an elliptical for the house (for those rainy or cold mornings where I’d like to just get my cardio done at home), but the husband drew the line on that one. We can get one, but he refuses to make it a gift 🙂 My lists usually include workout gear of some sort and kitchen gadgets. What can I say, I love to workout and cook.

We decided to give ourselves a trip to Boston for both our gifts since we are both turning 30 within a few weeks of each other, so my list will wait until Christmas

    • Tina says:

That’s a great Christmas present! Trips are special because you can always remember them. The husband & I don’t do random gifts for birthdays and Christmas anymore. We only get each other things we know we really want or need. Otherwise, we save up for something more special.

  5. Holly says:

I want a DSLR camera so badly right now! I love looking at all of the beautiful pictures taken with them. For now, I will just admire. 🙂

My birthday list would definitely include a camera and a Garmin (hoping I’ll be able to run “normally” soon!). And a trip to HLS ’11 would be nice, too!

  6. haha loved your list and I can totally relate (especially #5). It’s sort of a built-in routine in my life!

  7. Ahahahaha… my birthday wish list/gifts were all about running and fitness gear!

And I wake up 20 minutes earlier than necessary to make sure I get some blog reading in over breakfast… true story.

  8. Tina, I SO love your blog!!! You and I have a LOT in common, my new friend. Your “what makes me a healthy living blogger” list is right on the money. Totally love it!
My bday is coming up in October and the most desired item on my bday list is a Canon EOS Rebel t2i. Want!!! WAAAANT!! Mega-expensive, though, so I’m not holding my breath. Pretty happy with what my little Canon point and shoot does for me. 🙂 Which DSLR do you have?
And lemme tell ya – if there’s a HLS next summer I WILL BE THERE!!! Just asked hubby today, “Can I go to the Healthy Living Summit next year?” Once I explained what that is, he was like, “If you’re still big into blogging by that time, yeah.” I WILL BE. Can you imagine how much FUN that would be?!?! I hope you and I can both go!!

    • Tina says:

That would be a lot of fun. I saw a message from Caitlin on Twitter earlier with mention of having to get geared up for ’11 HLS eventually. I’m hoping it wasn’t just talk. 😀

And I have a Pentax K-X camera. Basically the same as a Canon Rebel xsi but with video features.

  9. Hmmmm….not sure I consider myself a “Healthy Living” blogger in the pure sense of the word.
I don’t post about food everyday.
I don’t have any ads on my blog.
Nobody sends me samples of food, exercise DVDs, or appliances.
I’m not a big fan of green smoothies.
    I HATE running and yoga.
    Can I still blog?! LOL!

    I guess I’m more of a Heather-Living blogger.
    Yes, I blog about
    Food
    Recipes
    Exercise
    Products
    Fashion
    Frugality.
But, it’s in my own little, just-sharing my life with ya-kinda way 🙂

  10. Such a cute post 🙂 I agree with all of your quirks! And love em too! What a wonderful community we belong to 🙂

  11. Emily says:

Great post. I think I feel most like a healthy living blogger at the grocery store – toting my grocery list, my reusable grocery bags and sticking to the outside edges of the market, only. 🙂

My birthday list this year contains more apartment-type items than healthy living items, surprisingly. I need a new vacuum and could use a dresser as well. 🙂

Hope you have a great Sunday!

  12. Katie says:

Oooo…GREAT bday list! 🙂 I love everything on there! 😉 I have Turbo Fire and it rocks! 🙂

  13. I am all about the balance! I am totally with you on having my dairy free cake and eating it too! I want a Macro lense too and a garmin! I was just talking to my husband yesterday about how things come to mind all the time when I am writing or cooking or exercising! This community is so great and I love being a part of a group that shares the same interests as me!

  14. if i had a dollar for every time i thought “oh, i need to blog about that” then i would be one very wealthy girl! i agree though…blogging has brought about a wonderful community and amazing fulfillment for me! i love it!

  16. Lele says:

I feel the same “I should blog about this!”

I feel like so many of us are looking for a creative outlet and realize that a blog, even one about food, is a way of expressing our personality, sharing our ideas about ways to make your life healthier and happier, creating new and exciting things! It’s great.

  17. oh man, i still haven’t learned how to take a picture of my food, i can barely take a picture in public! guess i always feel bad for the people around me trying to duck out of the way but to no avail 🙂

for my birthday list i’d like a heart rate monitor or the Nike sport’s kit sensor (that chip you put in your shoe…) a trip to the Healthy Living Summit would be on there too 🙂

  18. I loved all of these “quirks!” They made me laugh – which I needed as I’ve been working all weekend transferring my blog over to being self-hosted. It’s been a nightmare and so this was a good reminder that what we’re doing it supposed to be fun!

    • Tina says:

Oh that is a nightmare! I remember doing mine. Well…more just standing by watching as my husband did it. I wasn’t even doing the work and it frustrated and stressed me. Hope things are running smoothly soon!

  19. Ameena says:

I don’t know if I qualify as a healthy living blogger since I mostly complain about my husband and child on my blog. 🙂 But I definitely eat healthy so that should qualify me if nothing else.

I would love a $500 gift certificate to Anthropologie. I want about 10 things in that store!

  20. Lee says:

These are all totally true for me too. Especially thinking, “I should blog about that.” When I’m running, I am often simultaneously crafting blog posts in my head.

  21. Katie H. says:

Hi Tina! I’m new to your blog but you definitely have a new fan in me 🙂 I love your list! I can definitely relate to number one- my birthday is next Saturday (21st- yay August!) and my husband is getting me lululemon gear for running and yoga and my best friend just told me she purchased some hot yoga gear for me. I love it!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Okay, off to peruse around your blog for a while 😀

    • Tina says:

I’m happy we don’t have a lululemon too close to us. I think I could bankrupt us there. I don’t shop much, but I can’t stop myself from cute workout stuff!

Happy you enjoy my blog. 🙂 Puts a smile on my face and I always appreciate supportive comments like that. They truly make my day brighter.

  22. homecookedem says:

I can relate to your Healthy Living Blogger quirks! I am not at all shy to take a picture of my food in public. And I often think about what I should blog about. I would totally pick the garmin… those are so cool!! My sister has one and I’m so jealous!! 😉

  23. I can definitely relate to your quirks – especially getting up early to write, read blogs, respond to e-mail, etc. Sometimes I’m blown away by how much I get finished before I even get to work in the morning!

  24. Molly says:

I love love love your blog! Thank you so much for your comment on mine 🙂

I think we have the same objectives in life here! I love the FAITH part of it. Its something a lot of people dont share in the blog world, but I love it. Its a huge part of my blog and what keeps me going.

I will be reading lots more.

    Cheers!

    • Tina says:

I figure if I share my life, I have to share what is so important to me. I try not to shove messages down people’s throats. Just share what brings me joy and fulfills me. I find it much more rewarding that way because then I’m not covering up ME. 🙂 Thanks for visiting and I hope to continue seeing you around. I’m always bad about getting through my reader, but I always make sure to visit blogs of people who comment.

  25. haha photographing my food definitely makes me a little different than my friends. I love the community that blogging provides! Especially that I’m pregnant, so much love there. I’m sure you feel that mama!

  26. Heather says:

great post! I do the same thing about getting up early in the am to read! I too want to go to hls next year!

  27. love this one tina and i can relate to the getting up early (well for me it’s staying up wayyyy too late) and also always having a running commentary of my day’s activities and how i think that would come off or flow into a blog post. i am always thinking Blog Content. Lol

  28. Move that macro lens to the top of your list! I am amazed at what a difference it makes in my pictures!

  29. I don’t take pictures of ALL my food or blog multiple times per day but I do blog a lot about my (mostly) healthy lifestyle. I think healthy living extends to other aspects of our lives too, like relationships so I also blog about these things.

I have recently found myself blogging more and more about food and exercise and being drawn to read healthy living blogs! I just love the healthy living blog community!

    • Tina says:

I don’t do all my food either. It would drive me batty! I do things I want to feature, but mostly blog about various topics and things in my life. I hope for my blog not to be simply “this is what I did/ate today”. I love those types of blogs too, but for my personal writing style it isn’t “me”. And I love other blogs that share more about life in general as well. Like you do. 🙂

  30. Jennifer says:

This is so cute and I so agree! My wishlist has a couple of those same items. I definitely need to work on getting up earlier in order to blog and comment on other people’s stuff, but as of right now I’m doing it late at night. Such as it being 12:40 am as of right now. Oops…hopefully I can still crawl out of bed for circuit training tomorrow!

  31. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this one. This is my first visit to your blog, but I’m in on your 30-day challenge. It sounds like a great idea to me.

  32. Lindsay says:

This is so funny! I’m always thinking about something that should go on the blog or something to take pictures of. We’re definitely a breed of our own. 😉

  33. Haha this is great!! Love your birthday wish list. And GM + cake sounds about perfect to me! 🙂

  34. Becky says:

I can definitely relate to this! I knew I was a part of the blog community when trips to Whole Foods became more exciting than trips to the mall. I love pretty food presentations and taking photos of them. I think you birthday list is perfect!

  35. hehe, love this!! Sometimes I think I’m a “bad” blogger for one reason or another, but when it comes down to it – there are so many quirks I have that tell me I am indeed a healthy living blogger 😛

My wishlist includes first and foremost a new camera (Christmas cannot come soon enough with that one!). I also really want a Vita Mix!!

  36. I can definitely relate to the “I should blog about that” thought. That’s what tells me I’m a blogger!

  37. I love your birthday list! Here is mine for now:
    1. Vitamix
    2. Garmin
    3. New camera
    4. CSA Share
    5. A constant supply of larabars flowing into my house!

I don’t plan much on my blog either, I always find I have something to write about — whether it is a recipe or something I found to write a review about.

    I’m excited for Sept!

  38. Haha, I totally relate to the 5 quirks you wrote about. I feel like blogging and being involved in the community has done so much for improving my personal health by learning new recipes, food, tips and tricks… I can’t imagine life without it now 🙂

  39. Nichole says:

Yes you are living the healthy life – and I love to watch it:)

I think I’m trying to share the ups and downs to maintaining a healthy lifestyle while juggling what life throws at you.

I love birthdays! Right now I’d want a new bathing suit for “proper” swimming, not a bikini, lol.

  40. I 100% agree with you on all of those things – it actually made me laugh out loud because they’re so true! I still feel a little awkward taking photos of my food in front of friends when we eat out (especially if they don’t know I blog), but the thought always comes across my mind when I’m about to eat. Another thing I’ve noticed, which sort of goes along with your ‘I should blog about that’ comment is that sometimes I hear myself narrating my life in my head, or creating blog posts, then thinking “I should write that down!” LOL 🙂 I hope you had a fabulous weekend!

  41. Michelle says:

TurboFire and a Garmin are on my birthday list, too!!! Great post! I totally get what you mean about thinking about things to blog during the day. It totally changes the way you think. My husband’s even in on it, now, he sometimes thinks of taking pictures that I miss!

  42. I love the idea of Healthy Living Summit tickets for a bday list. Or BlogHer too.
