Guess What?

Guess what we did for dinner last night?

IMGP9684

Yep. Went to Scalini’s so I could eat some of the famous, labor-inducing eggplant parmesan! I feel kind of silly doing things like this, but when it boils down to it, we had a fun little family outing at worst. And at best, the legend may be true. Plus, when you reach a certain stage of discomfort and deliriously wanting the baby out, you will do anything.

And the food was goooood. It started with one of the best house salads I’ve ever seen in an Italian restaurant.

IMGP9685

It included beets, chickpeas, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, garlic, and a vinegary dressing. As well as some little balls of garlicky, doughy goodness.

IMGP9687

And we can’t forget the super-star of the night. THE eggplant parmesan.

IMGP9688

It doesn’t look like anything special, but it sure tasted phenomenal. Now let’s see how phenomenal it is at starting labor in 48 hours like it claims. All of these babies made it.

300+ babies! I even had to sign a special book. That way if I do have baby B in 48 hours they can send me a gift certificate and a special onesie for him. I’m not counting on it, but it still made for a fun night.

Guess what else? We should think like dudes. I recently read an article claiming that women would benefit health-wise if they thought or acted more like men in certain situations. These are the ideas from the current issue of Shape on what men do from which us women could learn.

  • Men Eat A Real Meal: Women may not eat enough calories in their meals, in an effort to be “good”. Then, they consume extra calories mindlessly in a non-balanced manner. If we ate a real meal, we wouldn’t have the fluctuations in blood sugar or feel the need to overeat.
  • Men Don’t Hold In Emotions: Women will hide feelings until they become too much to deal with in a rational manner. Men get it out right away.
  • Men Drink Beer: Drinking the manly beer over the girly wine or fruity drink is a smarter choice for health and weight management. Something to do with the bubbles making you drink slower and it being more filling.
  • Men Play Team Sports: Even as adults, men more regularly join in on team activities together. Women go their activity alone. The community of a team would provide more enjoyment in the exercise.
  • Men Take Risks: Men will more likely do things like ask for a raise or go on an adventurous trip. Women try to take the safer approach in fear of the possible outcomes. Risks would provide us opportunities and help us embrace change.
  • Men Don’t Mind Their Bodies: 8 out of 10 men are either indifferent or pleased with what they see in the mirror. Women critique themselves way too much and create a negative body image that can affect other areas of our lives. We need to learn to love what’s in the mirror more.
  • Men Don’t Dwell On Things: Men will analytically approach a situation, find the solution, do what they can to resolve it, and move on. Women will emotionally dissect things for an extended amount of time before making any real changes or improving the problem.

Shape presented the ideas above. I guess quite a few of them make sense. Not too sure on the beer over wine thing though. I also know women out there do many of these things too. It still provided an interesting read and something to think about. I certainly can get on board with the notion that, as women, we tend to criticize ourselves way too much and could learn not to focus on the mirror. Personally, I can dwell too much on things in an unproductive way. I also could take more risks to really go for things I want. I certainly do more than I used to, but fear will still hold me back at times.

Question of the Day – What are your thoughts on the “Man List”? Do you agree/disagree with any of the points made?

  1. Lol…that is too cute. I hope it works!!!

  2. Okay I totally think you’ll go into labor within 48 hours… because 48 hours after you ate that will be probably around 7 p.m. on the 8th and I said Braedon will come on th 9th!! It’s destiny!

  3. My fingers are crossed for you Tina! Come on B!

  4. I’m so glad you went and got the eggplant!! That’s awesome. After reading that list, I realize I’m a lot like a dude. Interesting. 🙂

  5. Stephanie says:

YES! I pretty much agree with most of this. Ryan always tells me when I’m stressing that a man would never think about the things I do. I’m not sure I’ll take up beer drinking again or eating like a man..but it’s true that most men just don’t dwell on their bodies as much as we do!

Hoping that the eggplant works for you!

  6. Ha ha… hey, it was worth a shot!

Yes, I think we’d all be happier if we acted more like dudes. My boyfriend seems like he’s generally content with things, and I am often worrying.

  7. Self magazine had an article on the exact same thing a couple months ago (I just read it this week in my magazine catch-up)! I might go reference it and see how similar their suggestions are to the ones Shape mentions! 🙂

  8. lindsay says:

oh that would be too funny if you really did have baby B in 48 hours. I hope you do!
I grew up with 3 brothers, so this eating style was natural to me. My first year of college (like 10 years ago, eek!) was a shocker when I lived in an girls dorm.

  9. Runblondie26 says:

Scalini’s eggplant didn’t work for me, but it was a delicious meal. The rolls dripping in butter…this 40 week 4 day preganant lady had no shame asking for a 3rd bowl when we were there a couple years ago.

Common baby B…the clock is ticking.

    • Tina says:

Yea, I’m not expecting anything…but what the heck? A yummy Italian dinner out with the family? A night I don’t have to cook? Sounds good to me!

  10. Therese says:

I’m not pregnant, but that looks like a yum-tastic meal!

  11. Tracy says:

That baby wall is so classic! I don’t totally agree with #2 on the man list. I think men have less complex feelings, so it seems they are easier to express. Women, on the other hand, hold emotions in because our feelings are more complex and we try to sort them all out before blurting out a bunch of nonsense. My opinion.

    • Tina says:

I can definitely agree with that. If I expressed everything I felt right away there would be a lot of issues in my relationships. I like taking time to think things through with my emotions and thoughts…as long as I still express the things I need to.

  12. Melie says:

I read that article too! It was very funny because we were at the gym with a friend of mine (who is a guy) and he told me that the list with “men behaviors” better described me than him! It was kind of funny but still wondering if I should take it as a compliment or an insult… Now let’s see if the notorious eggplant parmesan works! 🙂

  13. I really hope it works for you!! When I was soo done with my second pregnancy, I ate something really spicy and went into labor the next day!

Sooo true about the man list. Sometimes I feel that life would be simpler if I thought like a man!!!

  14. Sarah says:

What a fun dinner! I hope Baby B. comes soon and you get that free onesie and gift certificate!

  15. i hope it happens for many many reasons, but especially since i guess tomorrow as the delivery date! come on B!

  16. I think I agree most with the Men Don’t Mind Their Bodies — I think women are more critical on themselves than guys. And I definitely don’t agree with the emotion one at all — some men don’t know how to deal with emotions until they end up blowing up!

  17. I hope it works!!! How cool would that be?

  18. I completely agree with the “men eat a real meal”! I see it all the time! Females do tend to snack throught out the day while men often times just each 3 meals and feel satisfied.

  19. Erika says:

i totally agree with this list!! i don’t know about the holding in emotions one though, my boyfriend is the one who tends to hold everything in whereas i’m constantly letting everything out! haha.
i’ve heard that when women look in the mirror we tend to focus on certain body parts that bother us and men don’t do that, men look at their bodies as a whole. so interesting!
i think women should workout like men too 🙂

your dinner has me droolin’ over here! i hope the eggplant does its job, good luck!!

  20. I guessed tomorrow (Saturday) as the delivery date, so my fingers are crossed!

I think there’s an element of truth to many of the things on that list. Of course I’d love to see another list on what men could learn from we women!

  21. Mandy says:

Haha! that baby wall is hilarious!!

  22. Melissa says:

love that wall with all the babies on it..who knows if your little one will be on there…soon:) My mom said a very strong garlic cesear salad brought on her labour lol!

I have to say that I love this list. I find sometimes I like hanging out with guys over girls for the very reasons that the article states – no pressure, no holding back opinions/feelings etc. Although I know lots of girls who do many things that on the “man” list. Great topic!

  23. Allie says:

This is a cute post! I hope you have Baby B in the next 48 hours or so 😉 haha I love that they have a wall and everything plus you got to sign a book! Woo hoo!! I also like how we women should be more like men.. totally agree!

  24. Hope your eggplant does the trick!

Yeah, I pretty much agree with the “man list.” Women need to just chill sometimes, we worry and obsess too much.

  25. I either saw the same article or one very similar. I have to tend to agree. Though I do thing that it’s important to mind our bodies in terms of taking care to eat right, exercise, and be healthy. But agree we shouldn’t obsess. Lord knows most men don’t!

  26. Whoa that food looks so gooooddddd. If you go into labor in 48 hours that is AMAZING. 300+ babies! WOW.

  27. Kacy says:

That is so funny! I hope it works!

  28. I can’t believe that wall of baby pictures!! That’s crazy! I read that article to, and agreed with quite a few points! I would like to be more daring as well, and I so miss team sports!!

  29. Jess says:

So glad you went and got that eggplant parm!! Hope it does the trick 😉 As for the list…I am with you, I agree with some of the points but not all. I do agree that we should be willing to take more risks and that’s been a big focus for me of late, all about trying to take on more challenges in life, take a few more calculated risks that I might not have considered previously. That sort of thing. I don’t agree on the beer over wine thing tho…no way!

  30. lizzie says:

It was a trip to an Indian restaurant where I got the spiciest dish they served that brought Squish . . . and as soon as I walked in the door, the host said, “I know your kind, I’ve had so many ladies come in here looking like you. I’ll tell you what to get. You’ll have that baby by tomorrow.”

He was right. Good luck! I hope it works for you.

  31. That eggplant parm looks, if not labor inducing, enough to get me all hot and bothered, in a good way of course, due to its melty goodness 🙂

  32. I love that you had a labor inducing meal. And no need to feel silly, I’ll probably do the same thing when I’m pregnant just to see if it works 😉

I saw the article in Shape and was a little disappointed. I totally agree- most of those things aren’t done only by men!

  33. WHOA! When I first read about your “labor inducing meal” I thought you just made that up because of your story (I’m assuming that’s what happened since I’m a new reader). So you weren’t kiddin’! Crazy wall! hahah

  34. Ela says:

So what’s this with the eggplant parmesan? I hope it works out for you: what a fun way to induce labor! Are you drinking raspberry leaf tea?

Interesting guy list, and some of it makes a lot of sense. I couldn’t agree with the beer one, though: I think there are some sound reasons why it works better for men than women.

Thinking of you and sending you love
    Ela

  35. Kelly says:

C’mon Baby B…GET OUTTA THAT BELLY!!!

  36. Mellissa says:

I think guys are more sensitive about their bodies than they let on, I have heard 3 guys say how they want to lose 10 pounds in the last few days 🙂

  37. Yay, I hope the trip to eat that works for ya 😉 Cute idea either way.

I saw that article and laughed. I agree with some but not all. I work with all men and some are pretty emotional, worse than women at times, I just wanna slap them! lol

  38. Camille says:

I saw “guess what?” and my first thought was “baby!” Not cool!

  39. holy WOW, that bread looks like some sorta wonderful.

and I disagree with men accepting their bodies. lots of the boys I know care more than I do!

  40. I can’t wait to hear if Baby B will be here soon! I don’t think that list is entirely accurate. I know quite a few dudes that are concerned about their bodies. However, I do agree that they don’t dwell on things like women tend to do. Heck, I’m still dwelling on something that happened in 6th grade! 🙂

  41. I bet that eggplant parmesean is going to work it’s magic!! 😀

  42. Love that you went to the Italian Restaurant! I really hope that eggplant works 🙂

What an awesome story for the baby if it does, right?!

  43. I skimmed the Shape article in the checkout line the other day and it annoyed me enough that I put the magazine back. I’m not usually one to have such strong reactions to things like this and I’m not entirely sure why it upset me so much. I understand what they’re getting at, but why do women need to be more like men? Why can’t we celebrate what makes us women and work with that?

  44. Hmmmm I guess we’ll see what happens in 48 hours. 😉

The man points are interesting. And so true! Something I should definitely think about. 😀

  45. Michelle says:

I’m excited for you – I hope something happens soon!

I think some of those points about acting like men are true. We thrive on the drama of things though! I also disagree on the beer (although… I have one and I’m done – not true with wine!) and the whole emotions things. Now, I do agree that women are more emotional than men, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing nor do we always hold it all in (I know I don’t!).

  46. Lee says:

I hope the eggplant works for you!

I agree with most of those points, except for beer being healthier than wine. I understand it being less calories then fruity liquor drinks, but how it is healthier than wine?
