A Bit Late To The Game

Posted: January 22, 2011 at 7:38 pm

With life busy adjusting to two kids, we haven’t managed to get out much. The husband & I still make sure to have some time special for ourselves. We may not get to have a date night out for a little while, but we don’t mind spending some nights curled up on the couch with a movie.

Last night we popped in Food, Inc. We are a bit late to the game in viewing this one.

It didn’t provide any extraordinarily new information or insight to me, but seeing certain things definitely made the message more effective. Let’s just say I’m glad we only purchase certain types of chicken and bought a share of a cow from a local small-time farmer. I don’t foresee a huge overhaul in my eating preferences happening, but I definitely hope to continue mindfully choosing things I eat.

I say that knowing we are having some pizza and using our monthly BOGO Dairy Queen coupon tonight. 😉 We’ll be watching Social Network tonight…not too behind the rage of that one.

Question of the Evening – What popular movie did you see recently? Did it live up to what you expected? I’m anxious to see Black Swan because of all the talk I have heard of it, but then worry I may end up hating it because its so hyped up.

  1. Black Swan is definitely worth seeing. A lot of sex though. Don’t go see it with your mom like I did… WAY AWKWARD!!!

  2. I kind of had the same reaction– I feel like we’re very healthy eaters, and the movie didn’t provide me with any *shocking* information…but it was a nice reinforcement for being glad that we eat and live the way we do!

Enjoy the Social Network! I loved it!

  3. I’m always late to the game when it comes to movies. I am SOOOO behind because I don’t like going to the theater. I guess the last big hyped up movie I saw was Alice in Wonderland and I really enjoyed it.

  4. I’ve seen Food, Inc. but not The Social Network. I’m dying to see it though and Black Swan!

  5. I still haven’t seen Food, Inc yet. Oops… I’ve been meaning to check it out of the library for ages!

I understand the desire to see Black Swan! I went into it with lower expectations (because it was still fairly new and I heard a few mediocre reviews on it), so I was fairly impressed!

Enjoy having another movie night in! 🙂

  6. I thought the same about Food Inc! Good, but nothing new to me.

I REALLY want to see Black Swan too! My friends that have seen it have given it mixed reviews though…

  7. Marie Reale says:

I’m always a bit late to the game… but I have seen this movie! most recent movie I’ve seen was Tangled! I love disney movies and this one did not disappoint

    • Tina says:

Oh if you have tangled we will have to borrow it from you. Love Disney movies too. And I hope C is feeling better poor kiddo.

      • Marie says:

Sadly no we don’t have it, but hope to when it comes out. Philip and I actually went to the movies to see it about 2 or 3 weeks ago…I can’t keep up anymore.

  8. The Social Network was really good! 😀

I’ve always wanted to watch Food Inc. Seems interesting! 😀

  9. I watched Food Inc over the summer – it gave me a lot of insight!

  10. Melie says:

I also watched food Inc very recently. But I had previously read the books it is based on so it was not that new to me either. But seeing certain things certainly makes a difference. Last movie i watched was king’s speech. It was so good! Colin FIrth deserves all the golden globes and academy awards out there!

  11. I agree that I didn’t gain a huge amount of new information from watching Food, Inc. but it was awesome to watch it with my husband. He learned a lot and is so much more understanding of my borderline obsession with the food my daughter eats.

I am behind on new movies, too! That happens when you have kids. 🙂 We did watch Easy A on-demand last weekend and that was funny.

  12. Helen says:

Ready for this – Yogi Bear! It was cute but I like the old toons better 🙂 I too want to see Black Swan & Country Strong. The second one is mainly due to my roots. The words of the song are sooo me….I have had to overcome some major obstacles in my life but I am blessed!!

  13. Karen says:

Does Tangled count?? It was so cute!! I think I loved it just as much as the girls did!

  14. Social Network was good. I want to see Black Swan, but I am afraid of it. We watch (rented) movies a lot, so I don’t remember that being shocked by anything recently. Enjoy your movie tonight!

  15. Lizzie says:

I went with a friend to see Black Swan two weeks ago. Both our husbands were away for the weekend, so we figured it would be a good chance to catch up and see a movie. We both left very reluctant to go home alone! I consider myself a pretty open and liberal person, but this film disturbed me very much and while (as a film editor myself) I can appreciate the cinematic qualities of it, some of the scenes I could happily have done without seeing. Some of my husband’s female coworkers also shared the same reaction, so I know I’m not on my own 🙂

We’re going to see The KIng’s Speech next. Probably less stressful!

  16. i had dq tonight too! and i forgot to use my coupon! doh!

  17. Heather says:

We JUST saw Black Swan today! It was good, but real creep and open for interpretation. We definitely had a good talk afterwards! 🙂

  18. Coco says:

I haven’t seen The Social Network yet, but I want to.

I also saw Black Swan with girlfriends, and I liked it – it was dark and strange, though.

We saw True Grit over the holidays – that was a good movie with excellent acting too.

  19. Camille says:

We watched the movie “Buried” the other night. It’s the one where Ryan Reynolds is literally buried in a coffin. It was incredibly cool! I don’t want to give too much away, but the entire movie took place in the coffin. The coolest thing was that at no point did it get boring!

  20. Gah, I am sooo behind on the times! I have yet to see Food Inc. even though I’ve been dyyyying to see it! I’m really wanting to see Waiting for Superman, too. And Forks Over Knives. And Hood to Coast… so many! Oh, and I haven’t seen The Social Network, either. I did however just see Up! Adorable movie… and I saw blackswan not too long ago.. pretty intense!

  21. Kacy says:

I LOVED Food, Inc. but did not care for black swan. Too totally different movies but just putting in my two cents 🙂

  22. Lee says:

I liked Food Inc but I agree that when you are informed about food, like lots of bloggers are, the information is not exactly shocking.

I really liked Black Swan. I saw it when it first came out so all I really knew was that it was about ballet and there was a lesbian sex scene.

  23. Sarah R says:

We just saw the Social Network. It was pretty good, but pretty much what I expected. I hate it when people hype up movies and I have such high expectations that aren’t met.

    • Tina says:

I always hate that too. So I always try to go in with a bit lower expectations or none at all. I hate when things don’t live up to they hype.

  24. emily says:

I watched Social Network last night…and really liked it!!!!
Tonight, I watched Case 39, really good!!!

  25. I really wasn’t a fan of Black Swan–creepy and yet not that interesting. Social Network is great. We’re working our way through the Oscar Winners for Best Picture–tonight it’s Rain Man!

  26. Robyn says:

I have been raised on a cattle ranch and my husband and I currently ranch with his family. Our lively hood is agriculture.

We are very up to date on the Aniti agriculture activists out there. Please keep in the back of you mind that everything you see and/or hear from the media and activist groups is NOT TRUE.

  27. Astrid says:

Despicable Me didn’t live up to expectations for me. At all. Everyone else seems to love it. But me, I could have lived without watching it. I did watch Black Swan today, though, and loved it. I couldn’t watch some parts of it, but overall, it was pretty excellent.

  28. Food, Inc was the first I had ever heard of factory farming (call me naive), and it totally changed the way I ate!

I loved Black Swan. It had some “interesting” parts, yes, but it was really a great movie. I saw “The King’s Speech” last night and really enjoyed it!

  29. I saw Black Swan and well it was interesting.. I won’t say more until you see it! I still haven’t seen the Social Network but want too and FOod Inc was great.

  30. Elaine says:

I had to watch Black Swan with my eyes closed! So scary/disturbing. We just saw The King’s Speech. It was amazing!

  31. I saw Black Swan and liked it. My parents and others I know hated it.

I really want to see The King’s Speech. Luckily I see the comment before me from Elaine and she liked it. I think I am going to treat myself to seeing it in the theater.

I liked Food, Inc. and agree–didn’t learn a ton, but the chicken thing was so sad and really woke me up.

Hope you enjoyed The Social Network!

  32. I liked Food Inc but the information provided in it didnt seem mind blowing or anything. Still kudos for them for putting it out there to the public.

I attempted to watch Eat Pray Love this wk but turned it off before she even got to Indonesia.

  33. I *still* haven’t seen Food, Inc. I keep meaning too but I’ve been so busy with school!

  34. I want to see Social Networking!

  35. Allie says:

I thought Food Inc. was fair if not a little biased… it didn’t change the way I eat either, except making me want to buy from SMALL farms, etc. I am glad you had a nice little night with your husband! 🙂

  36. I have yet to see any of the three movies you mentioned, so don’t consider yourself too late to the party since apparently I’ve completely missed it 😉 Glad to hear you and the husband make sure to put time away for yourselves. It’s so important for you AND for the children.

    • Tina says:

Yep. We greatly believe in that. The marriage is first because it is what makes a happy and solid foundation for the family.

  37. Unfortunately I felt that Black Swan was too hyped up and I went in expecting too much and was a bit disapointed. It just OK for me.

You’re not too late in the game, I’ve yet to see Social Network either!

    Have a nice Sunday! 🙂

  38. I saw Food Inc not too long ago, too.. I thought it was made well and was really informative!
I just saw the king’s speech and loved it!

  39. Holly says:

I am late to the game on….a lot. 🙂 Food Inc. was very eye opening to me…it definitely changed how I eat and I think it’s something everyone should see! And I’m with you on Black Swan…I’m afraid I won’t like it because it’s been SO hyped up. My problem is, none of my friends want to see it with me! 🙂

  40. I just saw Fargo on Thursday. It was good but annoying at the same time. I have a love/hate relationship with the Cohen Brothers.

  41. i don’t watch many movies, and i don’t have television, so i never see pre-views for new ones. i feel like i’m clueless about movies. BUT, the most hyped popular movie i saw recently was inception (yeah, that’s how often i see movies!). i really want to see black swan, too, though! i’ll probably wait until i can get it on netflix, though!

  42. i have not yet seen the movie either and want to.

  43. Anne Marie says:

When I saw this movie, it made hubby and I go a little nutzo on the health craze. We’ve since relaxed a little bit and been jumping on the burger bandwagon more than we like to, but are hoping it’ll die down again soon once we get into our new house!

Black Swan was good, but completely different than anything I was expecting AT ALL!!

  44. Summer says:

Oh, I want to see Black Swan, too! I recently saw The Social Network (good, but not as good as I thought it’d be) and Easy A, which I absolutely LOVED! Emma Stone is too cute 🙂
