Right Back On The Wagon {Giveaway}

Posted: November 8, 2011 at 8:06 am

After a weekend full of celebrating (!!!) hearty food, lots of beer, ice cream, and pumpkin pie fudge, I felt ready to get back to my more normal way of eating today. I loaded up on many of my standard healthy eating favorites yesterday.

Picasa2_thumb[2]

Oats for breakfast, Love Grown granola and Larabars for snacks, egg sandwich for lunch, and quinoa for dinner. Delicious!

I also felt really antsy to get in a workout. My legs were no longer sore, but I knew I needed to hold off on a run, so spin class it was!

I planned to take it really easy, but I should have known that my favorite instructor would pull more out of me. I actually credit her a lot with increasing my cardiovascular and my leg endurance during her tough workouts. She never fails to take me past my comfort zone. I truly think spin class helps my running. And I’m not just sucking up because she reads the blog either. Winking smile Hi, Sophie!!!

As always, it felt so great to get right back to the normal go of things. I keep way more motivation that way and I know it’s all part of maintaining my healthy habits. Which I am all about, especially during this time of the year with the numerous events and celebrations that happen.

Last week, I had the chance to sit in on a video chat with Bahar Takhtehchian, the senior associate health editor for SHAPE magazine.

Bahar shared lots of tips on remaining healthy during the holidays, including some of my favorites:

  • When you know you will have a heavier dinner out, make sure to choose healthier options during the day.
  • Focus on satiating foods that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats – such as some almonds and an apple – for snacks before big meals out, so the chance of overeating decreases.
  • Get in whatever activity you can, because even 20 minutes can go a long way!
  • Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
  • Remember positive mantras like “Do I want a moment on the lips, or to take care of my body for a lifetime?” <—or something like that Winking smile

I really enjoyed the chat. It covered many ideas I already knew, but it never hurts to reinforce good habits and gain that extra bit of motivation before such a busy and food laden time of year.

In fact, SHAPE magazine and Fiber One (the sponsor of the chat) have teamed up to help YOU as well. One lucky winner will receive:

  • a one year subscription to SHAPE magazine
  • a yoga mat
  • a stability ball
  • a water bottle
  • a pedometer
  • Fiber One brownies

I stay healthy by eating normally like I always do, even during the holidays.

  4. I love a good spin class! Glad you had a great workout.

My favorite on-the-go snack is a whole wheat tortilla with peanut butter. It’s super portable and delicious! 🙂

  5. I’m never afraid to indulge, I just make sure it’s something I really want. Example: sugar cookie? Eh, no thanks. Dirty martini? YES PLEASE 😉

  6. My favorite on the go snacks are Luna Protein bars and/or homemade trail mix!!

  7. Glenneth says:

My favorite on to go snack is almonds!

  8. Brynn says:

Squeeze in excersize. Taking my dog for a walk is great motivation!

  9. I really try to stick with “special foods only” mantra. If I can have it all the time, I will bypass it on a buffet, but if it is my favorite cookie that only comes around once a year, then I will splurge on that item instead. “Eat what you love, leave what you like.”

  10. REL says:

My favorite snack on the go is almonds or a granola bar!

  11. judy says:

I make sure to get my workouts done early in the morning. My favorite on the go snack is a homemade granola mix.

  12. I love getting back on track with all things healthy–it makes me feel so much better!

    Favorite on-the-go snack? Clif bars!

  13. Jamie says:

My healthy holidays tip is to chew gum while baking holiday cookies! I know that without that, I am goner when it comes to cookie dough 🙂

  14. i’m really lucky to live in colorado where, yes it snows, but most of the time in the cities the running paths and streets are clear at all times. it’s usually sunny, which means that walking on my lunch break is refreshing and fun AND i can always fit it in before a party or something like that!

  15. Nadia says:

I exercise moderation with food during the holidays and make sure I only eat things that I really want and enjoy. I also continue with my regular exercise routine.

PS: Is this giveaway limited to residents of the United states?

  16. emilie says:

Oh, staying healthy during the holidays is a tough one for me! I’m a family comfort food lover. I think the key for me is getting in a workout or physical activity every day. It really helps motivate me to not overeat everything in sight!

My on the go food is definitely a smoothie. Any kind! I love them all!

  17. Jean says:

I stay healthy by trying to keep in mind that the holiday is just one day, not a whole month. There is nothing wrong with enjoying treats on the day, but don’t use it as an excuse to pig out all month long!

  18. There are a surprising number of road races during the holiday season, including Turkey Trot 5K’s and other Christmas time races, at least where I live! I try to sign up for as many as possible 🙂

  19. Jan says:

I would love to win this. Really.

Healthy during the holidays? Simply trying to accept myself and forgive myself for failing to be perfect.

  20. Katie says:

    Awesome giveaway!

I stay healthy by just no over-doing it, especially on the cookies, haha!

I like to also remember one day does not undo your healthy lifestyle, its all about moderation and balance! Christmas and Thanksgiving only come once a year, thank heaven!!!! haha!

  21. Amanda says:

That’s so awesome you had an opportunity to talk with Shape! I love Shape Magazine. I stay healthy during the holidays but keeping up my normal routine. Working out, eating right. There is always an opportunity year round to get off track but since living healthy is my lifestyle, the holidays don’t pose any threat to me!!!! My favorite on the go snack is an energy bar and a big bottle of water!

  22. Kathleen says:

Great tips. Routine is definitely what helps me have successful days in the area of food and exercise. I love how after a day or two of not following it, my body just craves healthy stuff. I missed congratulating you on your fabulous 1/2, so congrats Tina, super proud of you!

  23. Pam says:

My favorite snack is raw almonds and an apple. I stay on track by hitting the gym 5 days a week, yoga 2 days a week, and weights 2 days a week even during the holidays. I just feel better when I move my body, therefore I have more to give everyone else!

  24. Lori Lynn says:

My favorite snack’s are raw almond’s and also Trader Joe’s have these cranberry trail mix packets that are very handy to have as well.

  25. I stay healthy during the holidays by exercising indoors 🙂 Sometimes the outdoor weather just gets too cold (even in South Florida)

  26. I agree – spin is such a fantastic cross-training activity that pairs well with running. Glad to hear those legs aren’t too terribly sore!

I try to just stick with my normal routine basically – same eats, same workouts. If I do indulge in an extra cookie or 2, then I don’t sweat it. Because it’s so rare.

  27. Fave on the go snack would be dried fruit and nuts! Filling and soo soo good 🙂

  28. If I have time I will increase the length of my workout so that I can counterbalance my indulgences :D.

  29. trisha says:

staying fit during the holidays is all about balance and keeping goals in mind. I leave a little give space but also sign up for a race to keep me motivated!

  30. My favorite on the go snack is really simple: an apple. I can easily throw it in my purse (wrapped in a paper towel) and eat it as I go. I tend to eat snack bars too quickly and so I always want something more. I take my time with an apple.

  31. Kiah says:

First off, congrats on your 1/2!!! I have been MIA due to a ton of work, but things cool down tomorrow and I can’t wait to read your recap 🙂
My tip for staying healthy over the holidays is get my workout in early…it’s pretty darn hard to make it happen later in the day when everyone is hanging out and being social.

  32. I always say that there’s not much better than an early Monday morning workout – the perfect way to get back on track after an indulgent weekend for SURE.

Some of my current favorite on-the-go snacks would have to be Clif Z Bars, almonds, and apples. YUM!

  33. Cool giveaway! Apples are my fav on-the-go snacks, though hard boiled eggs are good if I’ve had time to boil them earlier in the week.

  34. my favorite go-to snack is always a sliced apple! I bring one to school every day and usually eat it with some almonds for the staying power!

  35. Chrissy Bruckner says:

I also try to only save my splurges for the treats i can not get through out the year, treat the Holidays as only a day out of the month, and keep up on my workouts.

  36. Amy Lauren says:

I would love to win! I stay healthy during the holidays for signing up and training for holiday races. For example there is a turkey trot 5k here on Thanksgiving that my husband and I are doing :). Definitely helps burn off some of the calories from all the good food!

  37. Heather says:

My favorite on-the-go snack as of late is the following: a small serving of pretzels with two or three candy corn, tootsie rolls or carmels. I break the candy into little pieces to eat a small piece with each bite of pretzel.

I love the salty/sweet combo and just a little bit goes a long way in satisfying hunger and a sweetness craving.

I have a little snack bag I carry in my purse with the pretzels and candy, and refill it before leaving the hosue when necessary.

  38. Haley says:

It’s all about choosing what you want to eat. Why stuff the food you don’t like in your mouth when you can have extras of the ones you do!

  39. Fave go to snack? Almond butter and celery…or Almonds and Craisins! YUM!

  40. Tina says:

My favorite on the go snack is trail mix. I have been addicted to this lately.

  41. My favorite on the go snacks are protein bars! They are so easy to just throw in your purse and go. Plus you don’t have to worry about them going bad.

  42. Jay says:

My tip is to eat as normally as possible and not “save” calories for big meals. If I get too hungry, I’m out of control.

  43. Rebecca says:

I like to make sure I sneak in little walks throughout celebration days. For example, leading up to Thanksgiving dinner (which is actually eaten at lunch in my house because we’re all about good digestion and not sleeping on a too-full stomach…weird oddballs), I make sure to be active in the morning, and after eating, I take another walk. I also like to take a break between dinner and dessert. It took me a long time to learn that just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean it needs to be an free-for-all. There will always be leftovers!

  44. Marcia says:

I like to sneak in an exercise class..usually one I do not take. I find the time….
